Dominic, you've grown so much as an interviewer, it's beyond impressive. You're in your element here, asking the right questions and leaving space for the guest to share, knowing when to prompt them at the right moment. So so so impressed by your growth. Love this podcast so much, please never stop!
I'm attending a week-long State convention for counselors and watched this episode of The D-Con Chamber last night in my hotel room. Today, in a six-hour ethics class, we were discussing the effects of personal bias in our profession; I shared about your program and Nana Visitor's book, then gave the examples of bias you all discussed. At first, I was worried about getting a bunch of "eye-rolls" using Star Trek production as an example, but it is amazing how many Trekkies are counselors... lol.
I was a young woman in my 20's when I was watching Deep Space 9 and Voyager, and all the women on those two shows were absolutely instrumental in my development as a young new female manager at my job. I looked at how Captain Janeway, Kira, Dax, B'Elanna, etc... led their people and mimiced how I handled people based on what I saw them do in different situations. It never even crossed my mind that I might not be able to do the job! I am so grateful for the women of Star Trek!!! Thank you for spotlighting Nana Visitor...she is definately one of my favorites, and knowing that she is advocating for woman fills my heart with JOY!
Nana came to a small convention in Cardiff along with Rene Auberjonois in 2015, both were so lovely and great to talk to. Nana even posed for a photo with me and my young niece and nephew who were dressed as Link from Zelda and Iron Man respectively. Nana made Kira such a real, fleshed out character on DS9. Thank you for having her on the show. Always a pleasure to hear her insights.
Awesome, as a newcomer... This show, starting from its wonderful commentators, guests and audiences... Have taken humanity itself on an experience through the stars ... Thank you and... GODSPEED ❤
My favorite bajoran, I loved the journey Kira had during her time on DS9, she went from an angry, too serious, broken and hurt person. To become an amazing, loving, funny, vibrant character. Thx Nana for everything you've contributed to Star Trek! ❤
One of the things that I enjoy the most about the interviews with people who have worked on Star Trek is that look behind the curtain and the chance to see what happened during those productions. We love these shows, the characters, the stories, etc. but often times, there was a lot of pain and hurt that happened during those productions. Thanks for another great interview, Dom and Connor! And thank you Nana for coming on and talking about this most important thing!
I‘ve heard great things about her book. I‘ll probably get at least the audiobook version since commuting is the time when I get most of my „reading“ done. Also, glad to see all of you guys still being so active and learning so much of these shows that still mean a lot to me.
Her commentary about watching this show as a child hit home for me. I was one of those children in the TOS days. I see the shows that added to the Trek universe as I grew up. My understanding of many of the issues all of the series touch on has grown as well.
I'm a bit late to this one, but this is such a wonderful conversation. I really appreciate the candid and open self reflection you all had during this interview. It's a welcome reminder we all need to have that reflection.
Wild to see multiple people posting sexist comments on this episode in particular. I think many of you need to have a conversation with yourself in the Gents, just like Dominic did. Side note, it's been nice to watch Dom grow into a bit of a feminist over the course of the podcast. He was always dropping these mild sexist comments in the beginning which bothered me, but I love that he's not been afraid to examine and work on that part of himself. An example to follow.
Fantastic interview and a book that I recommended for purchase to my local library. What an important topic. General comment: I'm a writer, and STAR TREK taught me, a straight white male, how to realistically write and portray non-white, non-straight, non-male characters. I realize that with every character I've ever written who isn't "like me," I learned the basics from STAR TREK and its portrayal of characters who aren't "like me." Going all the way back to the original series: Uhura wasn't "the black woman on the bridge;" she was THE COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER. Her ethnic background and sex were a part of who she was, but those things didn't define her. STAR TREK has done this right up through to STRANGE NEW WORLDS. It's something I can never be grateful enough for having been taught, not pedantically, but by example: JUST MAKE YOUR CHARACTERS PEOPLE. Specific comment: I have seen all the fan hate for Mary Wiseman, Tilly, and DISCOVERY, and it always makes me want to scream ARE YOU PEOPLE OUT OF YOUR MIND? ESPECIALLY the complaining about Tilly and Mary Wiseman's portrayal of the character, who is so different, interesting, fun, and multifaceted; who undergoes an amazing growth arc during DISCO's five seasons; and who, in the end, is right up there with Seven of Nine and Kira as one of the most INTERESTING female characters in the franchise. So it's so refreshing to hear you all give her and DISCOVERY props. Best TREK podcast out there, bar none. Thanks as always!
Stunning interview, really thoughtful and informative. Dominic speaking about his initial reaction to seeing Mary Wiseman on the screen was really interesting and showed true growth, if only more men were like that.
Oh yeah, Nana is so insightful and smart, and observant - the "Crystal and Alexis" reference she throws out there at one point (spot on, btw), it really made me stop and think, like, wow. Is that a "Dynasty" reference?! lol I haven't thought about those characters and their inter-relationships for HOW long now??? Omg. And many more things like that. Profound stuff, I love to hear her talk. :) She's great, she really is.
Thrilled that you are back! Looking very much forward to all the new episodes and guests! Thanks so much for the birthday photo 🥰 - it was a wonderful surprise from my husband! LLAP 🖖
Amazing interview! I just got the book, looking forward to every page! I was a young girl in the 1960s who found mentors in Uhura and Mr Spock and found a career in Computer Science, because of Star Trek. Major Kira is one of my favorite, most impactful characters in all of Star Trek! 🖖
I don't see how Nana thought that she wasn't a beautiful woman character on DS9? I always thought of Nana and Terry like Ginger and Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island. They were both stunning in their own ways!❤
One thing i will say about Nana's character, Kira, is that she was one tough cookie in DS9 and shall we say betting against her was a bad idea. She stood up to everyone, grew however to respect Sisco, stood up against Admiral Ross over the "Romulan hospital on Derna i think the moon was with nothing more than lightly armed ships compared to the incoming Romulan hospital ships with Warbird escort. Even her own double from the mirror universe had to learn the hard way if i recall. So credit to Nana for creating the persona of this tough, yet respectable character who when ot boiled down to it, had a heart e.g. her relationship with odo, her loyalty to her resistance cell members from the cardassian occupation. As fan, well done and thank you.
I'm a simple man. I see Nana Visitor, I just fall back to being the same giddy fanboy that would be glued to the screen back in 1993. Though I guess that's for both Nana and Kira. Kira was the one that first made that fanboy appear, the first moment that character came onto the screen, this fanboy popped into existence. Had seen nana in something else (can't remember what, ws a smaller role though) before DS9 and been impressed enough, but not yet a fanboy. Well, Kira changed that, through Kira the fanboy ended up fanning out (pun intended, so even if it fails I'll take the responsibility for it) into being a Nana visitor fanboy, to the point where I even ended up watching stuff that wasn't exactly my thing if she was in it. Similar thing happened with Jer Ryan and Seven of nine, my first reaction was "Ah crap, here comes the hot blonde in a supertight skinsuit to draw in the 13 year old boys, guess we'll have just a few episodes left before this show becomes unwatchable" but it turned out that it was two or three episodes before I realized that Seven had grown on me on several deep levels, and then one day I was channel surfing, caught Jeri in some other role and went "Ah, here's the best thing to watch". Come to think of it... Kira, Odo and Garak were the three characters of DS9 which instantly turned me into a fanboy and where that ended up expanding to the people portraying them, I'd add the O'Briens (yep, both Miles and Keiko) but the character Miles and the actor Colm had already gotten to me in the previous show they were in, and Rosalind already got to me as early as the 1970's when my kid self ended up watching something because it had Yul Brynner in it (Yep, Anna and the king).
I loved the whole interview, finished watching just the other day, and I'm just catching up with Lower Decks S5E5. They have to contaminate with gel. OMG, I died laughing! Had to come back and comment here. Y'all should take a look for a good laugh.
Awesome interview and great podcast! Love the new iteration you guys have really persevered and have grown so much as interviewers. Doing everything to support the channel and hope others do as well and it just keeps growing!
What an important discussion this is not only for the history of the making of the multiple Star Trek series but for the production of TV shows TV movie and Hollywood production there are so many learning lessons illuminated and it's not completely illuminated touched upon for other people to strike off and do further writings on, just outstanding I'm appreciative of all the participants in this discussion!
33:40 I spent 13 years in the British army, If someone had a family issue in the middle of a normal working day the response was "Go home, sort it out see you tomorrow" and it wasn't given a second thought (on tour it's different, but that's life and death stuff). If some TV guy said to me no, the show comes before your family, nah pal see you tomorrow or fire me but I'm gone.
Being a fan of the original series, and being a woman, I can say that I was thrilled to see women on the Enterprise, regardless of what they did. I would have to say though that I didn’t have any personal Star Trek role models, but instead took the message itself, as a science fiction fan. I’m surprised that Nana hasn’t watched every episode of Star Trek as there are women in every episode, which are treated differently, not just the regular actors. I’m thinking of the Empath, and Turnabout Intrudor specifically, but there are other female specific roles.
Sorry to tell you, SNW is shot in Canada, the reason Anson Mount got time off is probably Canadian employment laws, not some revelation in the film and television industry in the US.
So great having the D-Con chamber back and what a great way to kick off the 2nd Season. Love seeing Nana Visitor on as the guest (and her book is FANTASTIC!) Thanks @thedconchamber ! ❤💛💙🤓🖖🏾
Good that, sat and watched the whole interview with Nana. I'm not sure if some of it is a British versus American thing, or maybe a generational thing, but was quite surprised by some of the comments and perspectives. Just interesting to hear. For me I never really saw Avery Brooks or Kate Mulgrew as anything other than "the Captain". Or in Nana Visitor's case "the Major". I've watched DS9 as a fan of Trek since my teenage years and earlier with STTNG. I recently saw the DS9 S1 episode "Progress" for the first time recently about a month ago in 2024, having not seen it after watching DS9 for 20+ years. Nana Visitor has starring role in it dealing with a farmer on a Bajoran moon. Completely changed my view (after watching virtually every single DS9 episode) and is the definitive one regarding understanding the trauma that the Bajorans went through. Completely changes the understanding of background in the series. That specific episode in S1. More for me than any other. I also think one of Nana's best performances in the entire series. I said this only a month ago. Anyway. Was a great "D-CON" podcast episode. Well worth listening to. BTW, "Enterprise" was a great series, with a fantastic cast and very high production values. I didn't see some of the "tropes" myself. It did seem to be "episodic" with good individual stories. With only several or more arcs. I understand some of the comments about the cast being well rounded, because it was. I think some of the modern series have gone too much on the "Game of Thrones" or "Lost" style of arc based series and too many try and be them, rather than the episodic format. Personally.
What a fascinating interview with Nana Visitor. As much as our society has changed, some of our attitudes toward women, work and children seem very much stuck in the 1950s. Men didn't go into labour at work - their wives did that at home. Men didn't worry about child care - their wives did that at home. Men didn't worry about sick children - they had wives to care of them. The journey and work of progress continues. And Dom was right when he said that Enterprise should have been about the relationships between characters. Much as I love Enterprise, there was more that could have been done with the show. But I digress.... I am off to source a copy of Nana's book. Catch you next week. 🖖
Amazing interview! Loved the discussion. It is so important to be open minded and notice our unconscious biases and things that society has programed into us and work on unlearning them whenever we can.
@@darrettp It's a figure of speech, I'm old enough to know what the industry is like. Hearing it straight from the horses mouth is always an eyer opener.
Attention Hollywood!!!! This is how you make a feminine hero!!! An angry Bajoran!!!! From the 1st episode.....I felt like Gul Jasad peed in his pants a little. I was sold on Nerys!!! 7 seasons of watching Kira grow. Thank you for being on one of the greatest shows ever made!!!!
Nana is still stunningly beautiful. She aged like a fine wine
Reminds me of Anne Bancroft at the same stage in her life. Ageless beauty.
I loved Nana on DS9 and I'm beyond delighted to see how fiercely intelligent and engaged she is. She's better than I could have hoped.
Dominic, you've grown so much as an interviewer, it's beyond impressive. Yep, still would! But seriously she was always great. Smart Lady and a great actress as Kira.
This podcast is like spending an hour or so with family…the side of the family you actually like. Grateful Patreon subscriber.
Agree with this

Wonderful interview, wonderful guest, and her book is OUTSTANDING. Highly recommend it. Thanks @The D-Con Chamber , and welcome back!!!

Nana as Kira was a large part of the heart of the DS9 show. One of my four favorite characters on DS9, as was Dax, Worf and Quark.
Don't forget Sisko and Odo.
One of my favourite characters of any Star Trek show. Tough, passionate, driven, she grew without losing these great qualities.
Sisko and Kira were the best

Major kudos to Dom for admitting his biases re: Discovery and then *learning* from them. Not many people would have the courage to admit that. 🖖
Thank you Connor and Dom for an amazing interview with the lovely Nana!!
I always had the concept that Kira was the main character in DS9 watching it back in the day.
She kinda should’ve been
Star Trek really doesn't have main characters, yes the captain gets too billing but they aren't always the focus of many episodes
@@Soul-cry1I'm guessing you meant top billing.
@@lunnunis yes thank you
Actually they wanted Michelle Forbes back as Ro Laren.
Terrific interview. This new improved show is a revelation, all credit to those involved.

My favorite DS9 moment was Sisko asking Kira if she was okay and she says “I haven’t known okay for a long time.”
Ooof. That hits home.
Fantastic interview with an absolutely incredible guest! Thanks to the entire D-Con Chamber cast and crew!
Her commentary about watching this show as a child hit home for me. I was one of those children in the TOS days. I see the shows that added to the Trek universe as I grew up. My understanding of many of the issues all of the series touch on has grown as well.

Keira was a great character. Nana was awesome in the role. This interview is amazing too. Thank you.❤❤❤

I'm a bit late to this one, but this is such a wonderful conversation. I really appreciate the candid and open self reflection you all had during this interview. It's a welcome reminder we all need to have that reflection.

Nana played a version of D.C. Fontana in the DS9 Episode "Far Beyond the Stars". Awesomely done.
Far Beyond the Stars was the best episode of all of DS9 episodes . The final scenes were the most heart wrenching of all .
Exceptional interview. So good to see all of you again.
Thankyou Nana you are a really wonderful artist. Nana was by far the most intriguing actress 9n DS9.

It is so important to be open minded and notice our unconscious biases and things that society has programed into us and work on unlearning them whenever we can.
I agree. Nana visitor is amazing befor her time!!!
Love Nana ❤
Hearing how horrible the producers were behind the scenes in DS9 really makes rewatching the series quite painful.
I had the privilege of meeting Nana in London at a Trek con. Not only was she hot as Kira, she's a looker in real life.
Great interview.
I was just shocked to hear her say about Terry being the "hot chick"..like whaaat?
@@darrettp I'm more shocked to hear about the ugly side of the business and behind the scenes antics.
@@mitchelllawrence2798 are you kidding? Hollywood has been a mess since Hollywood became hollywood. You must be under 30.
@@darrettp It's a figure of speech, I'm old enough to know what the industry is like. Hearing it straight from the horses mouth is always an eyer opener.
@@mitchelllawrence2798 fascinating.
Nana is the best!
What a great interview.
This is brilliant. Thanks guys #LLAP 🖖
Nana is fascinating and lovely. And we share the same birthday including year.
Scotty TOS was the reason I got into engineering development for a 46 year career!
