@@elanormericle4642 The other guy he used to eat obscenely expensive stuff with has popped up again in his socials with "big announcement coming!" etc, and they mention it in the video. The show they had was back at Buzzfeed. It's not a sane idea, especially now with the cost of living crisis at the forefront. No one wants to see a couple of privileged LA dudes stuffing their gobs with gold covered lobster in the Swiss Alps. Even the Sidemen have scaled back on that type of content because they have the intelligence to understand that it just looks entirely out-of-touch with the reality of the viewers.
Back then the "Worth It" show did well, but that was on Buzzfeed, 8 years ago, with dozens of people making lifestyle videos in an ecosystem that could support it. Watcher is not that, it's a completely distilled audience who came to Watcher for Ryan and Shane and their ghoul boys content. They didn't bring over the Worth It audience with them.
Lim seems to have convinced them that the audience is there for him and his stuff as much as it's there for Shane and Ryan, but it's just not true. The audience for Ghost Files is not the same audience he had for Worth It, and people don't want to pay a subscription just so he can resurrect his lavish lifestyle show that no one is going to watch.

Everyone was blaming Steven Lim and I wasn't sure why, then I checked out his Instagram and it was blatantly obvious.
This is the guy who is now resurrecting his old show of "Men eat the most obscenely overpriced garbage", and he's bringing that back during a cost of living crisis while most people can barely afford to pay their essential bills. His socials are full of pics of him posing in expensive suits, wearing shades indoors, holding glasses of Champagne at glitzy events, and he drives a Tesla. The guy is the Andrew Taint of Watcher while Shane and Ryan are the Rhett and Link. He's a poser obsessed with the appearance of material wealth.
I didn't want to join a pile on and blame him for all of this, but he does seem to be the one blowing through cash like it's his full-time job.
I didn't think this before but now I'm actually wondering if Steven is a majority share holder of the company and he's the one making all these decisions while Shane and Ryan are the "familiar faces" he's using to try to cash-in.
It really feels that way right now. He's the one most out-of-touch with the audience, he's the one rarely seen on camera, he's the one always talking business before anything else. He wants to "move fast and break things", he thinks he's the next Elon Musk.

    - We’re being offered a 40% discount on their streaming service.
    - The Patrons are more accepting of this change than the general public (because we already had the disposable income to pay for it), but there’s still backlash even among our ranks.
    - There’s been a long history of Steven getting a disproportionate amount of hate within the fandom. You can imagine how stressful the past 24 hours have been for Steven Defenders.
    - There’s also a long history of Watcher making promises to Patrons and not following through. Promises for BTS content that rarely arrives, monthly schedules posted midday through the month, a supposedly Patreon-exclusive series getting posted to UA-cam anyway, etc. Poor management has always been an issue at Watcher.

I used to be a part of their Patreon but unsubscribed last December so I could focus on paying my student loans. I can corroborate that there has been a history of Watcher not following through on Patron promises -- I got one of my promised rewards a month after I quit being a patron lol which was wayy after I was supposed to get it (about 5-6 months late). I just think they should focus on making their Patreon everything they said it would be, and promote it more (most of the people I've been interacting with in the light of this news had NO idea there even was a Patreon, that's a huge marketing issue), before opting to try a brand new risky venture that might not even work. If they got let's say 10,000 new Patreon members, wouldn't that help them make even more money than risking it all on their own streaming platform??

I love Ryan and Shane but I don't think they have the content to support this kind of move like dropout does. Dropout's talent acquisition is amazing, I mean their actual play DND show has Brennan Lee Mulligan, widely thought to be among the 2 best dungeon masters in the world (making content) AND dropout's CEO is a rich dude, a politicians son, and is STILL better in touch with their target demographic than watcher has clearly become.

I don't think AdSense is covering their productions costs. They have more employees that they probably need, Lim has that show where he's eaten gold that he'll just shit out later cause the body can't process it and wants to do this more, and they're paying freelancers which means contractor fees which add up. Sounds like they've got a poor spending problem and needed to hire someone to take over their spending, not a subscription fee.

Those are at least the employees they regularly show on screen or in big group photos. Even Mythical knows better than to move to paywalled only content, the Mythical Society is EXTRA stuff.
It should be a great relief, If I were a popular UA-camr, to know that folks are here for ME. The person. Not some fancy set. They’d have to temporarily look like the bad guys dropping employees but if they did that, in the long run they wouldn’t have needed to jump ship like this. They’d end up making more if they had less employees to pay…I just dont get it.
And the Patreon, only around 5K are actually paying subscribers. So they have even less folks who would wanna come over. And I guess theyre making the Patreon a podcast only place. For another fee.

I swear they'd be 2x as popular now if they just had more Shane-Ryan content(not even necessarily w them traveling, they simply make a wonderful duo), I know branching out is a tempting idea but before deciding to do that u should make sure that your idea is sth your audience wouldn't wanna miss.

Mythical has 200+ employees, but that is across their entire media company. This covers their video production, their website, their merch company, book publishing, events, etc.
They can do that because they produce videos every day and have more than a decade of content bringing in consistently high revenue.
Watcher has 25 employees and produces "TV quality" shows while releasing maybe one video per week, and most of those videos are not the TV quality shows bringing them over 1m views. They have 2 formats, the basic YT experience videos (guys at table gaming, eating or other stuff) and their high-value shows like Ghost Files, Puppet Theater and Mystery Files. Only these bigger shows bring in 1m+ and they're released in seasons maybe twice a year.
Basically, instead of compartmentalizing their production costs to profitable and non-profitable shows, they're pooling it all together and they've become bloated with too many staff they don't need 90% of the time. They do not nee 25 employees to make "guys at table" content, but those employees are still there based only on the profits they make from the bigger shows.
