      I would go as far as to say, this is at least one of the best movies of the last decade. All the awards are totally deserved. Telling essentially a family drama (generation conflict, midlife crisis, depression) in such a creative way is stunning. Tons of pop culture references, funny, silly, action packed, and at the same time deep and heart-warming. This wild mix could have gone completely wrong, but they managed to make it work beautifully.
      My perfect example is, when you manage to make a sentence about laundry a taxes becomes one of the most romantic lines in cinema history, that is masterclass screenwriting.
      And as always, great reaction you two.

    A gentle correction: Waymond’s way is not being “fun” or “harmless.” Actually, Waymond's way is courageously choosing to be kind, hopeful, and living when things are confusing, scary, or disappointing during times many people find it’s easier to be angry, selfish and violent. In other words, Waymond is truly heroic and badass

    • @adderous
      @adderous Рік тому +18

      Most versions of Waymond that we see are examples of very positive expressions of masculinity, while the one version of him that keeps causing problems, escalating situations, and who wanted to abandon Evelyn until she showed her "worth" called himself Alpha Waymond.

    • @FF-bj4nq
      @FF-bj4nq 9 місяців тому +4

      @@adderous I see your reference to Alpha male but that's not the case in this movie. Alpha Waymond means he was the original Waymond that contacted other universes. The problems actually were from Alpha Evelyn because she pushed her daughter to limit if you think about it. Alpha Waymond was just trying to do his best to save multiverse and died heroically. It's also an expression of masculinity. Please stop spreading 'toxic masculinity' propaganda because that's not the theme of this movie, and be kind

    • @dezh6345
      @dezh6345 2 місяці тому

      @@FF-bj4nq Yes, that's how media analysis works. You see something in a movie that can be recontextualized based on your interpretation of the media. Their alpha interpretation is valid, as is yours.
      Toxic masculinity isn't propaganda. It isn't even something women came up with. It came from a 1980s men's movement.
      Learn about the things you disagree with, and get out of your echo chamber more often. Or you'll just keep getting disappointed when you see most people and most of reality doesn't agree with you.

      It is the sort of movie which is better in a cinema because the audience is forced to watch it. I've noticed at home a lot of people purposefully get distracted by other things and don't suffer the full emotional response to this movie. It really is designed to use absurdism intentionally break the audience and allow them to appreciate the full reality that they present and the final message - that when nothing matters, everything you do matters.

    A director that you guys have GOT to check out: Wong Kar Wai. A lot of the lighting and visual language used in the "actor Evelyn & Waymond" scenes was inspired by his films (In the Mood for Love, mostly). Two movies to DEF watch from him: Chungking Express (1994) (an energetic rom-com that explores heartbreak & new love. The vibes are immaculate lol. Those sloppy slow-motion yet regular speed shots are the result of a technique called "Step-Printing" and this movie uses it liberally), and In the Mood for Love (2000) (literally one of the best movies of all time. Looks ABSOLUTELY beautiful. Tony Leung & Maggie Cheung give all-timer performances. A slow burn, introspective romance drama movie)

    It helps some people to understand the movie that originally (throughout the shooting of the movie even, and only taken out in editing) that Evelyn (and presumably Joy) have undiagnosed ADHD in the base "real" world. This wasn't intended to invalidate the Multiverse explanation for things, but only to provide an alternate interpretation. It was taken out, the directors said, because they didn't want to pigeonhole one manifestation of Attention Deficit symptoms. I do think they may have also realized they wanted to lean into the "reality" of the Multiverse a bit more, because some people feel cheated if they think something potentially invalidates what they just saw.
    Ultimately, the film is about the idea of Nihilism, and how "nothing matters" can be flipped on it's head to go from the obvious (negative) explanation, to an alternate one where it simply means you're free to make your own rules and not stress over the weight of your failures. The Googly Eyes exemplify this. The bagel is a black hole with an empty center that eats and destroys everything. It's a glass half empty view of the world, at best. But Waymond is glass half full. His symbol, the Googly Eyes, are the inverse of the bagel. It's filled in where the bagel is empty. Evelyn, and Joy, accepting this is the action of the plot, the destination.

    Great reaction! I chortled when you mentioned The Goonies early on, because Ke Huy Quan, who played Waymond, was Data in The Goonies (and Short Round in Indiana Jones) when he was a kid! He's such a superb actor, isn't he?
    It's natural to feel that a movie this complex must have had a huge budget and a long shooting schedule. In fact, believe it or not, they shot it for under $15 million (with, apparently, another $10 million for postproduction, publicity, etc.) and in 38 days. They had to shut down a day or two early because COVID restrictions began just then in early 2020. The two-year delay until release may actually have worked in their favor, as they were able to really take pains with the intricate editing and test screenings (and those 2 days of pickup shots) that helped them arrive at such a polished product. I haven't been this enthusiastic about a new movie in a very long time.

    I think I take something different out of this movie every time I watch it (or see somebody else watch it). At this moment, what I'm feeling is that the movie is about paying attention to what's around us and understanding, both yourself and those around you. The ability to experience all of the alternate realities created by each minute decision you make _can_ lead you to feel like nothing matters, since no matter what *you* decide another you will do the opposite and the end results remain the same. Or, you can use that ability to truly comprehend what it is that makes you the happiest, to understand what those around you truly want, and to do what you can to help *everybody* achieve their best possible realities.
    Essentially, we're all "stuck" here regardless, wherever "here" ends up being. Might as well enjoy it as much as possible, and as often as possible.

    This was a fantastic reaction! I liked this movie, I wasn't so into all the kung fu fighting stuff, that's never been my thing, but I LOVE the family dynamic, the reality of the multi-language household (Eric sharing his experiences growing up in a Spanglish household made this an extra-special reaction, at least for me) and I love the mind-blowing multi-verse stuff. And also getting the chance to see actors you usually only see in supporting roles, often tiny ones, get to have some real material to chew on! Ultimately acting is the best "special effect", as far as I'm concerned! And this movie has some great acting. Best film of 2022? I haven't seen that many, but I can't imagine a more special, one-of-a-kind movie, certainly not more than the titles I see that were nominated with it. (The Oscars totally jumped the shark when, just a few years ago, they upped the Best Picture category from five nominees to ten. Five is a contest, ten is too much. They don't make ten Oscar-worthy movies a year! Totally waters down what it means to be nominated (and to win). I think of all the super classics that never were even considered for nomination, movies that would wipe the floor with cookie cutter, formula stuff that were most of the other nominees, it's totally embarrassing to our times in the context of the history of movies, lol.

    You would feel the movie even more relatable if you grew up in an Asian family like Joy and myself. Most Asian parents could be seen as highly critical and harsh toward their children just like Evelyn's father and Evelyn herself. When she said: 'You are getting fat', it was out of love and care for her daughter, but this is something that is not acceptable for us living on the other side of the world. I really wish my mother and sister could watch this movie together and see themselves in Evelyn and Joy characters.
    Anyway, this movie is just amazing. In this era of over-the-top Marvel movies, remakes, and sequels, it's nice to see some fresh ideas. The actors are just amazing too. As an 80s kid, I'm so glad to see those actors finally got the recognition they deserved. And lastly, that 'laundry and taxes' scene? it must be the most romantic line in a movie by far.

      It's also relatable for us South Americans. I was born there but grew up here. So the parents and older generations speak like that to the "kids", and the criticism comes from a place of caring. But to those of us who grew up here, it feels harsh and can hurt when we hear it. One of the things that happen in an immigrant family.

    I you look at interviews with the directors and screen writers, they talk about how it was inspired by the constant barrage we have of news, notifications, social media, media, etc. It is quite literally everywhere all at once for us. One of the directors said he wanted the cinematography to reflect how he feels like as someone with ADHD. They also wanted to address compassion fatigue; how we have to care about so much going on at once it's hard to remember what really is important to pay attention to, and the places we can actually make a difference.
    That on top of all the commentary on the immigration experience, the trauma we pass through generations (ie, father to Evelyn to Joy,) and nihilism and depression. It's a A LOT (dare I say Everything?) to cover, and they managed to do so with moments that are light and comedic, breaking the tension when it gets to be too much.
    This topped Eternal Sunshine Of the Spotless Mind, my previous favorite movie going on almost 20 years.

      I’m writing this story where the protagonist is a man but I’m having a hard find writing it because a woman is always a better subject matter now than men like us. And I don’t mean to put down us men but imagine if Jackie Chan was the lead- it may not be as effective . Are there emotional stories about men these days as lead not as supporting character?

      @@denniszenanywhere If u wanna write about men, not so sure what environment that u want to involve.
      For example, in China mostly family choose son rather than daughter. A parent's daughter which might be 5 to 7 yo is being kidnapped while pregnant baby. That baby boy has grown up and found out he has a missing sister as the parent does not care so.much about missing daughter. That boy decide to involve a lot of channel to find the missing sister, police station or whatever method which also involve in a gangster network. You could plot in whatever story inside.
      At the end he found his sister that gone through dramatic being abused or something.
      Men is seen more towards task that very hard to be done by women unless women know kung fu.
      If u gonna write family stuff on male character, let it be tough and hardship. That the hardship makes everyone aware family members does matter as a family. 👍

    "Sorry, it is a girl" is a Chinese specific reference. When the one child policy was in effect, this was a common feeling. With your only child being a girl, the family name would end. To a misogynistic society, this is a bad thing.

      Well, used to be a thing in the western countries as well. We could see it in monarchies, where a male heir always was above even an older female heir. And we still see it with last names, even today it is quite common for the kids to take the dads last name, or at least as the main last name.
