  • David Dussault on the value of PhD, the needs of the employers and why a career trajectory should not be linear.

'Companies don't know what they need at the moment. If they were able to plan 15-20 years ago on a five-year plan, now we're looking at the annual report which happens once a year, and then we're looking at the quarterly reports, and then we're looking at the reporting systems within the companies to see if they're actually doing what they need to do. So if you're on that micro level already of planning, how can you sit there and say: okay, we're going to need these sorts of people in the next couple of years?'

Interesting discussion. I was considering doing a PhD a couple of years ago but decided against it mainly because of the state of academia which is horrendous almost everywhere. Universities are now run like corporations with a vast underclass of casual academics and support staff while a few 'stars' get the tenured positions with generous salaries and travel budgets. It's quite sickening and I can only imagine how soul crushing it would be if you got your PhD and then missed out on getting a secure job. Also it hardly makes sense anymore to put all your faith in the academic machine when there are so many free or low cost learning platforms available. I suspect that some people do PhDs because they simply lack the imagination to see all the other possibilities out there.

I'm in a completely different field - modern history. The current wisdom is 'don't get a phd, even if you are aiming for museums.' The rationale is that the time you spent getting the doctorate could've gone towards work experience and saving money. Universities have an awful funding situation where students PAY for what is essentially, library access.
It's a tough situation for me - I want to do a Phd, but there's no denying it's expensive, there are no guarantees and it will constrain your personal life.

Thank you David Dussault, very informative and true especially in the industry environment today. Experience carrying out a particular task is more valuable than the theory but without the theory there is no progress. Would have been nice to get some pointers from you on what students can do to make them more real world applicable as you said companies sometimes don't even know what they need.

Is the link between PhD and career progression really broken?
I cant see how that can be the case for STEM subjects.
Perhaps it may look like the link is broken because we may have more Phd's these days outside of STEM subjects.
