  • We shot this 10 feet from the rubber, as the M14 is not the easiest to control in giggle mode. NOT a tutorial...we show what you need to learn, not how to do . Cannot perform at this level? Do NOT attempt.

When I joined the army in 85' my dad used to tell me stories of how amazing the M14 was when it replaced the Garands in the 82nd in 58-59'. He told me my M16 was a toy. Having grew hunting with a 30-06 I knew that M14 probably kicked like a mule. Mark just proved I was right. Lol

Yeah, but it was not used like that a lot. Too use it right, you fire short controlled bursts. There are plenty of other guns that were designed to spray out rounds to control an area. This was not really one of those.

The enemy down range of this weapon hopes it was fired on full-auto. That immediately turns their backsides from a barndoor to a broom handle. Even the rifle wants to retreat on full-fun switch!

Smith Enterprises Inc makes (or used to make) a replacement muzzle brake they designed specifically for the US Coast Guard called the Coast Guard Brake. The brake makes firing in auto very controllable.

I am sure they didn't like the "plastic toy rifle" from Mattel, but you saw Mark's front foot come off the ground, and he's not a small guy.
Getting rid of the full-auto M-14 was a wise idea, and overdue.

I shot one back in 2011 at a NRA sponsored gun range in a little town called Natadoches, or something like that. Since I was a NRA member I just had to buy the ammo to use the rifle. I couldn't hit my target in full auto. In semi no problem at 100 and 200 yds. But with full, nothing but tilling dirt 😅😅😅. Fun rifle though.

Not to step on any toes but I prefer a Beretta BM-59 ......... More options. Remember the BM -59 is a re-engineered M1 Garand with a 20 rnd detachable proprietary mag (M14 mags don't fit or work in it), selective fire, and a folding stock. Another option that few people know about is e.g if you misplace your mags or buy one with out a mag you can simply swap out the BM-59 floor plate with one from a regular M1 Garand and presto you can now use N-block clips. 😉 I know a mag is better .......... Beats a kick in the back side if you don't have one.

If Sargent Spain (my AIT instructor) saw someone do this in 1965... suffice to say there would have been repercussions and lots of pain. Point is, with all the CRAP here on UA-cam, and all the other poorly informed venues, it seems no one has a clue how to use, or how the M14 was intended to be used, in full automatic fire mode. Just lots of poorly informed opinions on why the M14 was such a terrible rifle. Point is, the M14 was intended to be used with an attached M2 bipod when used for suppressing fire. Also note that the M14s we used in Basic Training had no selector switches for select fire capability. It wasn't until we got to AIT, where we received full auto fire training, that we saw the select fire M14 rifles... and the M2 bipod. And, that is when Sgt. Spain informed us that, "... none of you d***-heads is to even THINK about that selector switch unless the M2 bipod is attached to your rifle". At that time (pre M16 days) we were taught to use the M14 in the same way as the BAR for suppressing. With the heavy (I'm guessing about a pound) M2 bipod attached to the gas cylinder on the rifle, and in a good prone position, it held it down well enough for suppressing fire. And with a loader to keep you in magazines and calling out targets, it would probably have worked as well as a BAR for that application. I say "probably" because we never had the opportunity to use it. When we got to Nam just two months later we gave up our M14s (after all the training in Basic and AIT with the M14) for M16s. Just say'n, John Wayne'ing an M14 on full auto is not how it's done, and it doesn't look like a very bright idea either.

I don't disagree with most of what you said, especially all those words about practical combat application of this firearm. However, when the opportunity arises to just have a bit of fun with a tool, in as safe a manner as possible, one should definitely take the opportunity and run with it.
Plenty of people drive supercars on the road with regular traffic... It's a waste of the potential of the vehicle, but the rules of the road are the rules. However when they get a chance to take that vehicle to a controlled environment aka a race track... It's neat to see what the vehicle can do.
A gun range isn't much different than a race track... Just designed for different machines.
Let the man have some fun while given an appropriate opportunity.
