  • Mateba's are a rare bird. The MTR6 is among the rarest. We compare the engineering against a S&W revolver, and find most of the parts are common to both. NOT a tutorial...we show what you need to learn, not how to do . Cannot perform at this level? Do NOT attempt.

Hey Mark, thanks for this. A couple of months ago I became obsessed with how the Mateba and Chiappa systems function. I can be a little obsessive and this video will keep me from developing an ulcer because there are very few good references on the mechanism. Now I can just come back here instead of pulling my hair out and chain smoking. Big ups big man

Ian McCollum recently did a review of the semi-auto version of this gun (in .44 mag). He noted that the grip attachment is a weak point and is hard on solid wood grips. The gun he was showing had metal replacement grips.

This was very interesting. I've never seen one IRL, and probably never will. Even so I've always loved the concept of the Mateba.
Now I understand that more than 90% of what I've read and heard about these has been said or written by people with exactly as much hands on experience with them as I have, that is none what so ever.
That's why it's interesting to hear you say things like at 5:05
"So all the pieces to a Smith & Wesson or a Colt or any other revolver are here, they are just aligned differently and this was definitely built, I'm going to call it the Glock of revolvers. It was definitely designed as a machine tool, and it's pretty well done."
Most of what I've read and heard has been people saying the, yes it's a cool and interesting design. But the mechanics is so complicated and weird that it's extremely unreliable and the double action pull is atrocious.
Well the mechanics seems well designed. Sure it's more complex than a S&W, but I can't claim I see a lot of things that would be prone to breakage. And as far as the double action pull... 7:35
"and this has got to be one of the smoothest revolvers I have ever fired in my life"
Well that's that for the "atrocious" double action pull.
This video only reinforce my feeling that the designer really was on to something with this design. It's not perfect, nothing really is, but there are a lot of things right with it.
One of the problems is the cylinder gap down low just above your hand. If it had the cylinder sealing against the force cone like the Nagant M1895 that wouldn't be a problem, but it would complicate the design even more. But hey, I can dream right?

  • @harmlesscreationsofthegree1248

What an amazing piece of engineering! The adjustability of the trigger stages impresses me. It may be complex but I’d love one. Unlikely to be reproduced though, I dare say 😂

For context, this is part of the MTR series, these models are single/double action revolvers and not the Auto Revolvers that Mateba are better known for. If you want info on the Auto revolver Ian over on Forgotten Weapons has his own video where he takes one down and shows you how it operates. That model of course having a custom grip with the original solid wood one being assumed to be long gone due to the poor quality of the grips.

Hello, dear master, I want to buy a second-hand, used classic double shotgun. There are many rifle brands. I can't decide which brand of rifle to buy. Can you tell me the brand of the double trigger, solid, good shot, light quality classic shotgun? Which brand of double rifle do you recommend to buy? As an experienced gunsmith, what is your suggestion for me? Thank you.

Mark, go find someone who owns a Chiappa Rhino and see if it compares to the feel of that low bore. I always thought they were just a gimmick but they truly are a pleasure to shoot.

Any chance you took some photos of the pivot locations and parts with a size reference in frame...? Have been trying for years to get my hands on one to do just that but your mechanical walkthrough of the action was amazing! Lots of great advice in your videos.

What concerns me is the location of the cylinder gap. Seems awful close to the firing hand, and I would be worried about burns or gas cutting to the hand.

The old UA-cam Channel LifeSizePotato covered these. The guy owns several www.youtube.com/@LifeSizePotato
The channel is still up but he hasn't uploaded a new video in around 7 years.

Two, totally different designs. Nothing in common, except for being revolvers
