Weirdly enough, apart from my stringed instruments, my favourite two pieces are both from the cheaper end of the spectrum... Donner synth bass and Roland T8... tempo synched together, they make for quite a nice little "robot rhythm section"
the microfreak is *mwah* some of the most incredible sounds ive ever made on my songs has been through this device, the keyboard does take some getting used to, but honestly if it just was a little bit more sensitive itd be incredible, i still love it now that ive gotten ahold of it better

I liked this video. Totally agree with the Digitakt, everyone should check it out, the lfo settings and microtiming on the sequencer are where I feel it really shines.
Digitakt is great. In addition to it's features and the workflow, the device is beautiful. Your workflow video got me excited about Digitakt again. I appreciate that.
Thanks for the list and detailed descriptions! Some of these gems I've definitely had my eye on... I was surprised not to see the MPC One here! Or in your sell video, though to be honest I didn't expect it in that one
100% on the same page regarding Microfreak. But for me it goes automatically in pair with Polyend Tracker. A marriage made in heaven, I can get lost for hours making music with just these two.
I agree to those two being a killer combo. What I love in particular is being able to program MIDI CCs on the Tracker to be sent to the Microfreak. Endless possibilities... The only downside might be that it takes some time to sample stems / tones from the MF into the Tracker, and in case of pattern-long stems you 'loose' one of the 8 Tracker tracks and - in case of full songs - valuable sampling memory... Nevertheless, 100% agree to that combo!
If you want a good MIDI controller, the BCR2000 is killer and like half the price of the faderfox. OK, you have less encoder, but you have more buttons. And with preset, you can easily have 128 encoders, in 4 pages.
Love it. I use the microfreak everyday and since my keyboard (alesis v61 old version had it for 5 years) doesn't have a midi out, I finally figured out how to send the info from my mpc into the arturia and record the audio from it at the same time, and man this thing has the most versatility in the world. I was really looking at some expensive analog synths for those big chord sounds recently but after fiddling with my microfreak, you can practically get any sound out of it, and with effects on the mpc? Every sound lol
I don’t have a lot of pedals…2 cheap(ish) pedals…but I’m also blessed enough to have the Habit and Microcosm…I love it for everything..I’m a bass player, a bunch of synths/drum machines/grooveboxes and other rando acoustic(ish) instruments..I’ve got an electric/acoustic uke, eKalimba (my absolute favorite in the Microcosm), and trumpet (my first instrument I learned at 8 years old, but I don’t use it as much as I’d like because my piezo transducer mouthpiece is broken so I have to mic it) I’ve also got the 6s and it’s a phenomenal little battery powered box that’s a fantastic vintage Roland digital emulation and intense FM drum synth…and I still haven’t added much of my own samples or used the tr-editor so I know I’m underutilizing it and still getting my money’s worth Sorry for the novel, especially with all the parenthetical tangents…
Niiice! Somehow I busted one of the pots on my Digitakt. I’m good with soldering but not sure what pot to get or if I should just send it to the OEM. Thankfully it’s just bent, no noticeable audio problems (today)
is worth pointing out if you like the microcosm fx pedal but dont have the money take a look at the ocean machine pedal. for less than half the money of the microcosm youll be way more than half the way towards having the same power.
This why i sold my digitakt after 5 years. My biggest gripe is that it's a 2 in 1 (sampler/midi controller) and i just wished it does each one fully. it's so lackluster as a sampler, mono only and mono chromatic, effects are terrible and so many basic fonctions that my old mpc1000 does. And as a midi brain, only 8 midi tracks and inability to name cc control. Sequencer and lfo are amazing tho. by selling my mpc1000 and the digitakt i manage to get a used mpc x and i couldn't be happier. Best of both world imo. Great video.
Yeah if you’re into tampering with samples in the unit you def made a great choice. The way I’m using it- it hasn’t caused any major issues in my workflow! The mono thing hasn’t gotten to me yet. I’m getting an octatrack soon though so it might just completely overshadow the takt
@@LiamKillen I really had trouble deciding between the mpc x and octatrack, because i ain't gonna lie, i'm still missing the elektron sequencer workflow. Once you get used to it it's hard to go back. On the X i'm getting ableton sequencer vibe which is good but not as intuitive as elektron. From what i've gathered after talking with octatrack users, it is from another era before elektron standardized its workflow. Analog rythm, digitak, digitone, syntakt... are very similar machines with a different synth inside it. But the oktatrack is an entire different beast and most agrees that even though it is amazing at what it does, the workflow/user experience is a bit all over the place. Hope you enjoy it.
@@LiamKillen I got the OB-4 because of your vids about 5 months ago and I literally use it everyday. It's awesome for meditating and sounds amazing with the op-1. Keep up the dope content Liam!
nice video. does the digitakt come with that rack that tilts at an angle? I want to get my first elektron device, I specially want some drums and also a good brain, is this a good choice? the synkat and octotrack and analog drum machine all look cool. Also, I think its a soft g like, digital -- when you say digitakt or digitone (not like dig as in digging in dirt) - could be wrong but I dont think so.
Hi, love this information. I'm new, and would like to know, did you go dawless for the sound quality or the workflow? I also loved your video about your bulletproof Akai MpD with Logic Pro. Once I learn the tools, I just want it right there and start making, then throwing in samples, even of noise where I can hear music, and build from there. That is what I have wanted to do for a long time, and now I have made the time. Which way do you recomend with your experience with daw+mpd versus dawless. Thanks a lot in advance!! Really appreciate your time and these videos.
DAW + MPC is LIGHT YEARS more convenient! DAWLESS is just a different, much more expensive, but also more hands on way of creating music. I would start with a DAW personally.
I'm still saving for tr 6s .. And I would not of considered it had u not pointerd it to me .. i know it's going to annoy me with menu sht .. but within the month I'll own one.. that's it then ... Maybe decks again
weird question, but what cables are you using? They seem so beautiful (I mean the colourful coiled ones) :D ! Thx for the content btw. kinda counterproductive after going through a gear detox phase.. But very fun to watch!
How do you think hydrasynth and digitakt interface? Is it cool to use resampling feature from hydra to digitakt and use them as composing elements? Maybe for transitions too
That is def something you can do! I recommend Digitakt to everyone but also they just discontinued it - which clearly means that they have something else up their sleeves 🤔
Recently i have been making more music on the computer rather than dawless, not sure why. But i cant see myself getting rid of any gear because having them are ways to get inspiration
Hey Liam, thanks for sharing your experience! I want a Synthesizer to my TR-6s. Is the Microfreak beginner friendly or would a JU-06a or JX-08 easier to learn?
Can you show how would you go from the op-z with a idea on it to exporting that idea into to mpc, I have both but no real idea on how to sketch something on the buss and arrive home put that in to mpc and build on top of it sorry to bother, I'm a noob
This is a question for my Discord for sure to get a much more elaborate answer from multiple synth users - would love to have you there ! :-) discord.gg/xj8J2xJuBP
Agree with all your selections! My choices as well for the years to come. May I ask what are the support you use for the elektron digis? Are these vesa mounts?
Good question- It’s a great synth are arp function is off the chain. It’s VERY specific though I’m finding out quickly. It might be one of those things where I’ve had enough of that Juno 60 sound and ready to let it go. TBH I’ve been neglecting the microfreak. Something clicked and I’m realizing just how capable it is.
@@LiamKillen Yeah it makes sense tbh. Microfreak is so versatile but I always find its sound thin for bass and lead lines.. On the other hand, super fun and great for experiments!
@@happyjessus Yeah I agree to it sounding a bit thin. Part of it can be enhanced by external effects (delay, reverb, overdrive, EQ etc.), but sure, you definitely have a point, I guess it doesn't automatically sound great out of the box... Yet, the versatility for the price is amazing (number of synth engines, mod matrix etc...).
@@LiamKillen I think it really depends on the use scenario. I love the digitone and the analog four but I can't use them on a plane. I almost never use the op-1 in my home studio but I never leave the house without it. I don't know, there's something about the 4 track, the little keyboard and the interface that invites me to create and have fun. The lack of quantization and crappy reverb still drives me crazy though 😅
Good choice on digitakt. It may not be as mysterious as an OT or as romanticised as an MD but it's a workhorse that I can't imagine not finding useful and inspiring in any setup. On the flipside, I did sell my Microfreak, which made me a very small amount of money and was probably not a wise idea. Great little synth that is much more than it appears on the surface, especially given it's awful graphics and keyboard).
I bought the new Digi - haven't sold the old one yet though lol. I will sell it though because like c mon ... it's pretty much the same thing but the 2 is better in every way.
Bro the latest OS 1.30 for Digitakt allows you to set Global FX Mix for compressor, delay and reverb so that when you change patterns, the settings stay the same...
Hate to break it to you.. but all of these items top my list of "dawless gear I would never buy"... with one exception. I bought a Hologram Microcosm a while back and it's one of the more useless pedals in my studio. I would go so far as to say it's a $500 doorstop. Anyway, it just goes to show you how diverse and varied our tastes are in the community.
@@LiamKillen You know, it's really neat! But.. it's a gimmick. It's the kind of effect you want to use live maybe once in the course of an evening.. or once on an album, and that's it.
Yeah but like ... the minifreak - I think it's fair game !! Same with the Digitakt to Digitakt II - there's so much overlap ! Argue about it in my Discord lol: distrokid.com/vip/liamkillen
I imagine the debate has been hashed out, but I haven't heard the arguments--how are we pronouncing "Digitakt"?? Seems to me it should be with a "j" sound, like digit, digital, rigid, instead of a "g" sound like Biggie, Jiggy, etc. Can someone enlighten me as to why the "g" sound seems to be taking over? Not just Liam, either--seems like I've seen it on Ricky Tinez and other yt videos
Its all personal . I see your gear is all very new and modern . I'm curious if you stay in the same gengres for years and no evolution in how to make music .
If you hate the idea of this gear breaking...ease up on how hard you hit the buttons! Watching you push buttons literally making me flinch and cringe... LOL. 🙂
Had an mc 101 got rid of it that was just pure crap I imagine the 6 is the same Roland jd xi was on fire but got bored of it small keys but should have kept it
Nice video explaining some gear, yet i still have no logical PROOF as to why any of us need to defend our workflows. I have gear and I have software I OWN,so it's really no one's business what, why, and how,I make it work.Anyone online or off who tHINKS they are some gatekeeper, judge and jury are delusional and insane.
@@LiamKillen yeah,I keep it real, not online 'real',not UA-cam 'real'...Polyend Tracker and Yamaha QY700 so far,MIDI patchbays, and thinking of Polyend or Elektron for more sequencing/Midi duties..
It's all the same newb hipster stuff everyone else talks about. None of would be allowed through the door here. LOL What about the more obscure gear that is really odd. I feel like an old man here - oh, wait, I am one! ha ha
Personally, I love that Faderfox turned you down. Too many 'content providers' getting freebies for promoting products. True promotion is when you buy the gear and use it.
Maybe some projection going on here… If you feel like your time is worthless then I can see why you consider it as a freebie. Or maybe it’s just OTHER people’s time that you don’t value. It’s weird because you’re watching a product that took probably 24 hours to make? Not to mention the amount of hours that went into learning + comparing gear that audiences are interested in- to inform their purchases…for free… Either way 🚩
@@LiamKillen No. I consider paid promotion (outside of specific ad breaks as used by many youtubers) to be dishonest, in appearance certainly, in reality, possibly. The fact that you use Faderfox without financial gain indicates that you honestly value the product. As soon as you are paid to promote it, your credibility is in question. Not a complicated point really ;)
@@amosluyk Boy... I mean most 'good' content creators do mention during the first 5 sentences or so whether the product they're discussing was given to them or if they bought it with their own money. What you make out of it is left to yourself. So I don't see it as the content creator's responsibility to 'save' his credibility, but the viewer's responsibility to acommodate to 2022...

Great video but I have one question. Where do you record this too if your not using a Daw?
Zoom h5
@@LiamKillen thanks man. I appreciate that
I'm one of "those guys" that pronounces it, "Didgi-tact", and it always sounds strange to me to hear "Diggy-tact".
I think it’s strange too I think it’s nerdy AF with that hard g but apparently that’s how it’s pronounced
Agree with all your selections! My choices as well for the years to come.
May I ask what are the support you use for the elektron digis? Are these vesa mounts?
They’re from varidock ! You can check out mirai_berlin on insta too
Thanks@@LiamKillen!
I'd never heard of the PC 12. That thing looks wild.
The best midi controller I’ve owned by far
How about JU06? I expected that instead of the Microfreak taking into consideration how often you use it and how happy you seem with it
Good question- It’s a great synth are arp function is off the chain. It’s VERY specific though I’m finding out quickly. It might be one of those things where I’ve had enough of that Juno 60 sound and ready to let it go.
TBH I’ve been neglecting the microfreak. Something clicked and I’m realizing just how capable it is.
Microfreak is a much more diverse and capable synth
@@LiamKillen Yeah it makes sense tbh. Microfreak is so versatile but I always find its sound thin for bass and lead lines.. On the other hand, super fun and great for experiments!
@@happyjessus Yeah I agree to it sounding a bit thin. Part of it can be enhanced by external effects (delay, reverb, overdrive, EQ etc.), but sure, you definitely have a point, I guess it doesn't automatically sound great out of the box... Yet, the versatility for the price is amazing (number of synth engines, mod matrix etc...).
Does the tr6s have internal sidechain like the newer t-8?
No!!!! It needs it!!!!!
I also use OB-4 all the time for everything, would you buy an OD-11 since that also has bluetooth now?
Nah I’m good with the ob-4 for now
Cool i need someone to talk me out of spending 2 big ones for two Carlsson cubes which would be bad judgement... but??
I sold my Digitakt and immediately regret it. Will buy it again soon
Keep iiittt!
Yeah do microfreak review!!
Def will
I like your choices.
😏
I thought the op-1 would make it into the list 🤯
I doubt I’ll ever sell it but for me it’s just not top anymore compared to the competition
What stand are you using to hold the Digitakt?
Varidock!
Could you export your daw tracks to the digitakt to work as backing tracks?
You’d have to chop em up but yes you could
@@LiamKillen
Thanks for the response! Chop em up? So, a song length track would not work?
Good choice on digitakt. It may not be as mysterious as an OT or as romanticised as an MD but it's a workhorse that I can't imagine not finding useful and inspiring in any setup. On the flipside, I did sell my Microfreak, which made me a very small amount of money and was probably not a wise idea. Great little synth that is much more than it appears on the surface, especially given it's awful graphics and keyboard).
It’s the best - I’m getting an octatrack though
Which I think will serve me well
Will you sell your old digitakt and get new digitakt 2? :)
I bought the new Digi - haven't sold the old one yet though lol. I will sell it though because like c mon ... it's pretty much the same thing but the 2 is better in every way.
"délit de fuite"
"délit de fuite"
"délit de fuite"
what a perfect sample
lol
I don’t see anybody else asking and it doesn’t look like you’ve already mentioned it but is the OP-1 really not in your “never sell” list?
If I got the field I might sell the OG 😏
How about now with the Digitakt 2 ? 😂
I got a video coming out on it today - more soon.
Also if you want synth community / discussion vibes, hit up my Discord :-)
discord.gg/xj8J2xJuBP
What about model 1.4 will you sell it?
Nnnnoooooo!!!!
knoxville local and got friends at hologram💪
Dope!
Bro the latest OS 1.30 for Digitakt allows you to set Global FX Mix for compressor, delay and reverb so that when you change patterns, the settings stay the same...
I’m aware of global settings- they don’t carry over from one pattern to the next- believe me I’ve checked extensively
@@LiamKillen Hmm that's strange as it works for sure as shown on many other UA-camr videos...maybe shoot Elektron support an email for assistance?
If you have anything you don’t need or selling can you please 🙏🏽 let me know I would like to buy from you!
I have some stuff listed on Reverb! 😊
good for u man
🍻
Hate to break it to you.. but all of these items top my list of "dawless gear I would never buy"... with one exception. I bought a Hologram Microcosm a while back and it's one of the more useless pedals in my studio. I would go so far as to say it's a $500 doorstop. Anyway, it just goes to show you how diverse and varied our tastes are in the community.
What!?!? It’s like a top seller and everyone’s raving about it! Not for everyone I guess 🤷♂️
@@LiamKillen You know, it's really neat! But.. it's a gimmick. It's the kind of effect you want to use live maybe once in the course of an evening.. or once on an album, and that's it.
For me the biggest weak point of the digitakt is, that it is mono
That is def a weak point but I honestly don’t mind it. It’s the pattern based workflow that really fkn gets me
@@LiamKillen totally, but if you want to do that real samplebased hip hop music mono is kind of annoying, for electronic music I don’t mind it either
I dig it!
🍻
man, you sold the microfreak hahaha
Yeah but like ... the minifreak - I think it's fair game !! Same with the Digitakt to Digitakt II - there's so much overlap !
Argue about it in my Discord lol: distrokid.com/vip/liamkillen
I imagine the debate has been hashed out, but I haven't heard the arguments--how are we pronouncing "Digitakt"?? Seems to me it should be with a "j" sound, like digit, digital, rigid, instead of a "g" sound like Biggie, Jiggy, etc. Can someone enlighten me as to why the "g" sound seems to be taking over? Not just Liam, either--seems like I've seen it on Ricky Tinez and other yt videos
hard g is the technical correct pronunciation according to the swedes who invented the instrument. I think the harg g is nerdy as all get out TBH
Digitek or MPC one ?
…depends 😏
I like digitakt better for sequencing.
For more sample flexibility, mpc
I have a mpc one for 2 years ii love it
.... would i be stupid to get a digitakt as well ?
No MPC One???
It could be replaceable by a “lvl up” MPC someday
Its all personal . I see your gear is all very new and modern . I'm curious if you stay in the same gengres for years and no evolution in how to make music .
Surely I’ll evolve with this gear + new gear to come
@@LiamKillen Succes
Yeah yeah.. never say never! Ha ha.
😏
No 0-coast?
Never tried it
Thinking of that poor guy who fell … and fell again… and fell again… and fell again… and fell again…
Hopefully soft falls
If you hate the idea of this gear breaking...ease up on how hard you hit the buttons! Watching you push buttons literally making me flinch and cringe... LOL. 🙂
I slap the buttons on Elektron gear - true. But it can take it!
Had an mc 101 got rid of it that was just pure crap I imagine the 6 is the same
Roland jd xi was on fire but got bored of it small keys but should have kept it
6S is not crap! Great instrument
Coming in hot
@@LiamKillen yeah,I keep it real, not online 'real',not UA-cam 'real'...Polyend Tracker and Yamaha QY700 so far,MIDI patchbays, and thinking of Polyend or Elektron for more sequencing/Midi duties..
It's all the same newb hipster stuff everyone else talks about. None of would be allowed through the door here. LOL What about the more obscure gear that is really odd. I feel like an old man here - oh, wait, I am one! ha ha
Lost me at “newb”
@@LiamKillen ha ha
I don't know
I think u do
Never say never 🤭
😅
people that say DAWLESS shouldn't even make music.
Peepee comin’ in hawt
Québécois ? From the radio it seems like you are 😅
Montreal!
Ohh, a Quebecois! :p
Yeah! Montreal :-)
You'll never sell it because none of it's going to last for more than three years.
It’s actually all pretty durable
the way u use the word dawless is so funny. its like u think its something cool :P
I have a video coming out on this exact topic lol
Personally, I love that Faderfox turned you down. Too many 'content providers' getting freebies for promoting products. True promotion is when you buy the gear and use it.
Maybe some projection going on here…
If you feel like your time is worthless then I can see why you consider it as a freebie.
Or maybe it’s just OTHER people’s time that you don’t value. It’s weird because you’re watching a product that took probably 24 hours to make? Not to mention the amount of hours that went into learning + comparing gear that audiences are interested in- to inform their purchases…for free…
Either way 🚩
@@LiamKillen No.
Can we all agree to stop using the buzz word “dawless”?
I got a video in the q about this exact term and how it pisses people off 😂
When you showcase pedals show us without the pedal vs with the pedal pls :D
Noted! 😊
