Very nice restoration Mr. John. As others have noted they look kind of like knife steels used for removing a burr after sharpening a knife. Beautifully done!
Hello, John.As a retired butcher I would say that this tool is quiet surly a knife sharpener. Congratulations for your restoration. Best wishes from Germany
Very nice! To me it is clearly a burnisher/honing rod. Useful for knives, but also for card scrapers. The one with the loop on the end would be handy in butcher shop.
Nice job with that John! It sure came out beautiful. I've got one like it that I don't use too often, but I use it to refine the edge on card scrapers that I use for cabinetry and woodworking.
Many years ago when I was a carcass butcher I created a butchers steel from a rat tail file. It took quite a lot of grinding on a sandstone wheel. It was great steel, did not use for many years and it looked exactly like you tool when I came across it in shed I made it about 50 years ago I am 72 now. Now going to do it up and pass it on to my grandson. Good video
Thank you for sharing your experience. Smoothing that steel was certainly a young man's job. At 81 I certainly understand. This surely is a knife honing steel. I was unaware that there was a smooth steel tool for honing.
Hi John! Being a meat cutter for 40+ years I can tell you tool with the ring on that one you said you forgot you had was a butchers steel. The ring would clip onto a chain that they wrapped around them to carry it. The one you just finished could be a butchers steel and even would work for one. They have steels that are smooth and I liked them but ceramic steels are the best, but they break easily if dropped. Great show today and awesome job. Thank You for sharing.
Wow, you went all out on that one mate. Looks amazing. I have a couple of similar pieces that are knife steels or burnishers. The burnishers are a smooth rod used to turn over the end of cabinet or card scrapers. One knife steel I have looked exactly the same as yours except the fine ridges running down the rod wrench have worn off as it’s at least 100 years old. Regardless what yours is, it is beautiful now and you should be proud of it.
Thank you for sharing your experience shedman and the nice compliment. This surely is a knife honing steel. I was unaware that there was a smooth steel tool for honing.
I cannot make out the lines usually found on a traditional 'Steel'. So a good second guess is it's a Marlin Spike used in rope/sail/tent work for blending/mending lines.
Thanks for the video John, whatever it is it came out great, I too was going to say it looked like a knife steel, but they do tend to have grooves up the length so maybe not. That brass ferule looked to be nice and thick walled, they don't make 'em like that any more, I would say the wood was Ash based on the grain if it was British, but perhaps there is something similar looking in the USA ?
Gorgeous! You're right, not much better than a beautiful wood grain next to brass and polished/blued steel. Only thing missing is a nice leather holster!
The tool can be used for almost anything that you want, if the application fits. it does seem to have a little bend in it. it needs the Dake. Watching you and scout crafter makes me wish my basement was set up so I can start doing this kind of work again. my home burned over two years ago and I still Can't get things set up, it's my age I guess 77.
Thank you for your input. This surely is a knife honing steel. I was unaware that there was a smooth steel tool for honing. Being 81 I understand the energy thing. Losing my shop would do me in.
Short butcher's steel? Or, marlin spike? This is most likely a compact, blacksmith made, butcher's steel. As far as I know, most marlin spikes were not hafted or handled.
I’ve got a four sided file that comes to a point but there’s no teeth, just some really fine lines that go the length of the file? It’s bothered me for years lol. Help!
The first thoughts I had 1) for burnishing 2) for aligning bores to insert bolts. A fine restoration.
Thank you for your input. Tthis surely is a knife honing steel. I was unaware that there was a smooth steel tool for honing.
