  • A couple weeks ago I did a video on my top 5 personal favorite neighborhoods in Edmonton, Alberta. There are so many more cool areas of the city and so I wanted to do another video on 5 more neighborhoods in the city worth checking out. And again, I am very biased towards the central core of the city, the areas around downtown, Whyte avenue and the central river valley.
    The neighborhoods I cover in this video are Downtown, Highlands, Cloverdale, Ritchie and Garneau. These are all in the central core except for Highlands which is just northeast of the downtown area.
    I plan on doing more neighborhood videos down the road.
    Thanks for watching, I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider liking and subscribing if you got some value out of this one, and I would love to hear your comments on your own personal favorite areas of Edmonton.
    Disclaimer - As I was editing the audio I noticed again that I tend to repeat the word "neighborhood" too much, but I was tired of editing and wanted to wrap up the video. Something to work on in the future.
    Please leave your comments below regarding your thoughts on the neighborhoods I highlighted, I'm also interested in what your own personal favorite areas of Edmonton are.
    If you're interested in watching more of my videos and supporting a fledgling infant UA-cam channel then consider subscribing to my channel - I upload at least one new video per week.
    Thanks for watching, cheers!

    Great video. Thinking of making the move to Edmonton from Vancouver for affordability and your videos are tailored to what I’m looking for - inner city older areas with character and not suburbs.

      Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback, glad the video provided some value to you. As I stated in the video I'm also partial to inner city areas with history and character and I find the suburbs generally lame and dull. Edmonton really has a ton of options within the central core!

      I foresee a new boom period like we had in the 1980s, and I wouldn't be surprised if the metro population of Edmonton surpasses Calgary within 20-30 years!

    • @gp7910
      @gp7910 5 місяців тому +2

      @@strangenorth Totally agree. Our downtown is actually huge compared to Calgary area wise. With all the highrises being built filling in the whole area from Jasper to 124 and then north to 107 Ave and back to 82 will be a dense urban area.
      The north east of downtown should have gentrified if they didn't put all the homeless shelters near Chinatown.
      Edmonton already has twice the apartments that Calgary have. I see a much more urban city in the future. I think Calgary is only urban in their downtown and slightly across the river in Kensington. But it's no old Strathcona!

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  4 місяці тому

      That's a great point actually - I definitely think Calgary's downtown is bigger and more bustling currently, but that area you outlined is indeed much bigger than Calgary's downtown and it's definitely getting denser with high-rise buildings.
      Also a good point about the northeast end of downtown suffering due to the concentration of social services. I think we all have compassion for people with crap situations, but it's also true that this area of the core is pretty rough and sketchy.
      I love Kensington in Calgary, neat little area - I also really enjoy the Inglewood region as well. I'm obviously into ghost legends and Inglewood is, by far, the most "haunted" neighborhood in Calgary!

    Lived in Edmonton Downtown and SW for years. Downtown is great for young people, awesome restaurants. If you are a family, I would rank:
    1) Magrath
    2) Windermere
    3) Sherwood Park
    4) Glenora
    5) Laurier Hieghts
    6) callingwood south

    I loved and appreciated this video. Question: I lived in Edmonton during the 90'a before moving. It looks like I'll be coming back soon. When I did live there, I had the best time living near the top of Bellamy Hill and being downtown. You recommend living downtown, but in a previous video said the area was dangerous. What are things like, say, between 108th St to the west, 100th St to the east, 103rd Ave to the north, and 99th Ave to the south? Is that area safe?

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  6 місяців тому +3

      Thanks for the feedback and I appreciate you watching! Yeah the buildings at the top of Bellamy Hill are really cool, great location and views. In the past few years downtown Edmonton has seen an increase in social disorder, but that goes for the whole city too. Downtown east of 99 street is definitely sketchier than other areas. But the area you described is fine overall. Downtown just has a lot of services, attractions and living options and so I consider it to be a solid place to live overall even though there are occasional problems. The neighborhood of Oliver to the west is also a fantastic central area to live, tons of services and living options as well - everything from small houses to tall high rise condos.

    Maybe the most interesting neighborhoods are central, but also most crime, poverty etc. Love to always visit these places but 100% visiting them and living on the south side of the henday

    • @strangenorth

      That's fair, and yes the core areas have more crime and open social disorder - plus frequent sirens, particularly downtown/Oliver!

    Good day what are some areas in edmonton in regards to apartments that you would recommend?

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  7 місяців тому +3

      Thanks for the question! Ok so I would first ask you what general area of the city you might be wanting to be (downtown area, Whyte ave, university etc.) - My number one recommendation overall is Oliver for apartment options, very central and close to tons of stuff. If you're wanting southside then Strathcona and Garneau both have a lot of apartment options. Did you have any particular area of the city in mind?

    • @gp7910

    The Highlands is the best undiscovered gem in the city period and always has been. Why? It's on the east side which many Edmontonian's seem to have a weird almost bigoted hate against which is a shame because it's got some of the best skyline views, park and transit access not to mention deals on property in the city. I say this as a proud Greater Highlander who lives within siren range of the school bell every day... And if you're into progressive values/politics it's also the most left-wing in Alberta according to voting records. ;-)

    • @stickynorth
      @stickynorth 7 місяців тому +3

      My personal Top 5 are 1-Downtown 2-Strathcona 3-Oliver 4-The Dale's (River/Clover/Ross/Walter*) 5-Garneau all for the same reasons, near the river valley, diverse, great food/transit options but outside of the core The Highlands, Bonnie Doon, Richie, Forest Heights, Capilano, Virginia Park and Cromdale are in the honorable mention next best tier for the same reasons but lack either transit or retail options to make them the best neighbourhoods... I also hope The Quarters gets there one day because ideally that's where I'd like to live once it... ahem... calms down.. ;-) I had a friend who bought a condo there on 95th but bailed because of its various issues...

      I love Highlands, I'm rooting for the commercial area around 112 ave to expand and diversify. Love the character overall and it is very pleasant to walk around! I agree about the eastside bias in Edmonton, the east side has a ton of character and beautiful areas. I want to cover the neighborhoods of McCauley and Boyle Street down the road - both downtown eastside areas with a sketchier reputation but they have a ton of great qualities and interesting history.

    • @strangenorth
      @strangenorth  7 місяців тому +3

      Thanks for your personal favorites, I'm interested to hear what people think. Edmonton really has a solid variety of unique neighborhoods. I really think the Quarters area and Jasper ave east of 95 street will be a region that will steadily improve in the future, has a lot of potential. I really appreciate the downtown eastside in general

    The "love all serve all" building on whyte and about 97 st was a theatre when I was a kid called studio 82. On saturdays and sunday afternoons you could see a double feature for 50 cents. Popcorn was 15 cents . The movies were usually godzilla or old vincent price horror movies. At night it showed porn ! lol Me and my friends would get caught sneaking in when in junior high

      @@strangenorth I hope they get the Princess running again. I frequent the Metro /Garneau a lot. Also hope the theatres downtown dont close. It's most of the stores have left downtown. I especially miss all the 5 and dime stores along 101 st North of Jasper. Woolworth,kresgee's, Metropolitan,Zellers,and Army and Navy. The ball the big department stores ,Eaton's ,Bay Woodwards,etc.
      Also shops along Jasper ,which was more like Whyte storefronts. Again a shame it's gone.
