I made a Christmas Dresden for me and my DH as he wanted a Christmas quilt....I sewed 800 wedges..25 blocks! And I hand appliquéd the plates and the circles, it was a labor of love that I did over two years! He loved it. Sorry we can’t post picture here. I thought I’d never want to see another Dresden again, but I have to say I love this one! Lol
I have always been intimidated by Dresdens and have never made one. But this tutorial made me want to make this one. Have to get the Dresden ruler. I don’t have a jellyroll but I have a stash of fabrics I have been collecting that would look perfect with this pattern. Thank you for solving my pattern search.
Very helpful video, Jenny. I too am addicted to the dresden plate pattern. My hands no longer allow hand stitching or needle turn for curves, so your point treatment is a good one. Much appreciated.
I have a very tattered Dresden quilt from my now passed grandma; she would have been 105 this year and it was her grandmother's quilt. It was never finished, and pieces were in a brown paper bag. It has ALWAYS been intimidating to me. I don't know that I will finish that quilt, it's so delicate, however, this tutorial has given me encouragement to make my own Dresden plate quilt. My grandma/great great grandma's quilt had hand embroidered stitches of various types to sew the plate onto the background fabric; all in black embroidery floss. I think this would be beautiful with the same concept, (like Ms. Jenny Doan did with the "Stars and Stitches" quilt). It's now officially on my list of "to do's". I best finish the other 7 quilts that I've started since this crazy Covid Pandemic mess started, LOL.
I’m old in years but new to quilting. I love this quilt but my skills aren’t quite up to making it. I’m saving this video so I can make it when I have better skills. This one reminds me of my mother. ♥️
Just give it a try. You will want to rewatch how that peak is formed. It looks complicated but is actually very easy to do. Once you managed your first blade, the rest follows. (Tip: you don't need to put together a lot of strips. Dresdens also look good with just 1 fabric for each blade. Try alternating blades, eg. one entirely red, one entirely blue, one entirely white one entirely green, one red, one blue, one white, one green, etc. You just need to make sure that the number of colors divides 20) If I can do it, you can do it also.

I'll be ABSOLUTELY honest.....when I first seen this video.....as soon as it started I said to myself "WOW.....I don't think this is going to be a tutorial that I am going to put on my To Do List.....because I'm sure it's going to be way too time consuming or difficult to do!! " Shame on me!!!......for thinking like that! I should KNOW better by now that our awesome/wonderful Jenny NEVER EVER makes quilts that are TOO hard for us to do!!! How is it that Jenny gives MILLIONS of us the courage to tackle any and all of the tutorials here on MSQC??? Simple, she has this amazing way about her that not only give you the confidence, she let's us know that it's okay to make mistakes or try something we aren't sure of!!! Lastly, Jenny you remind me so much of my mom......God Bless her, she never ever thought that her daughters couldn't do anything they put their mind to. I am so glad to see you using heat and bond scraps to anchor the dresden. I do this all the time with other projects too and its so helpful! I never toss my scrap heat and bond. Fun project! Thank you!

Thank you Jenny for dispelling all the horrors of Dresden for us. Now, if anyone is a card maker out there like i am, spray starch your material and get a circle die from your essential dies that we all need and because it is starched, the die machine should cut out the perfect circle for you. I happened to get with orders of dies a few years ago, 12 bottles of this Terial Magic (spray starch) through my various orders and that's why i have decided to learn how to quilt, to use up this spray starch. Lol. It was to be used with dies to cut out material so that you could applique shapes for mixed media. Sorry Jenny for hogging your bonnie quilt but hey i hope that it helps someone out there. Because of you Jenny, i have found a 1/4" mark on my sewing machine and i've also found that i can make it stop with the needle down as well. My embroidery machine was fancy when i bought it, but i only sort of used it for embroidering and not for actual sewing until i started to make my first quilt here and my old faithful wee husqvarna that i had for other 30 years blew up on me and i couldn't justify another sewing machine when i have two embroidery machines. I am at the moment trying to baste around a kingsize (mistake, i got carried away with myself to make this fit my grandson's double bed and forgot that i still had borders to put on it), but i don't i will be able to quilt it on my machine as there just isn't enough "throat plate" ??? room to shove the bit i'm not doing into. I think i will end up tying it together to keep it together.Anyway thank you flower for a lovely and different take on the Dresden plate as normally i had only seen the blades as one piece of fabric. "You can get addicted to the Dresden", how true that statement is! I love the different twists you can do with the Dresden template. I saw red, white, and blue in my mind with this one. The different widths would make it look like it had lots of movement. Hmm. Missouri Star Quilt Company The disappearing shoofly, cheater fabric flag, disappearing 4-patch, the hexagon that is completely sewn into a "free flow" (game on my iPad) pattern, log cabin table runner, patching jeans for hubby, and others I can't remember, but know I started them and they are in a box, hopefully safe and all pieces together. Oh, and I made 4 or 5 Dresden plates from some Oriental fabric with different backgrounds, one finished, and the others waiting to be sewn on their background.

I am recovering from some surgery so I’m doing the little things on some projects that need to be done before I actually sit down to the sewing machine. I’m working on a Dresden wall hanging with Christmas fabrics. Lots of turning and ironing to do because I’m making four. I will turn them into Christmas wreaths. They will be for next years Christmas gifts.

Here is what I do if I want a circle that won't fray or come undone (I think you call it needle turn if you do it by hand): I cut out a piece of cardboard or plastic template sheet in the exact size of the circle. Cut the fabric out about 1/4" larger than the template. Sew long stitches all the way around the circle with needle and thread, with a knot in one end and leaving a long tail of thread when you finish going around the circle. Place the template in the center of the fabric and pull gently until all the fabric goes up and over the template. Take the template out, reposition the fabric if necessary, and press. Cut the thread tail off and you have a nice circle that you can machine stitch down close to the edge. Great quilt, Jenny! Someone must be having some vivid dreams to think this one up!

I love this quilt and I love making Dresdens. For the center, I like the method that Jenny used in a video from about 10 years ago (!!), using a cardboard template. I prefer when the center circle is not raw edged, but turned under instead. Either way, this is a fabulous quilt, and a great video. I'm going to make this one for sure.

Dresden plate is the best and Jenny always comes up with the best variations. I have made her dresden turkey, patchwork dresden, and I also made Christmas wreath dresden wall hanging. Its such a fun block to make. I love this new variation too!
I love the Dresden pattern but never felt I could do it justice. Jenny and her team figure out these amazing short cuts that look so complex yet are much easier. So I'm headed to MSQC to order the Dresden ruler, can't wait to get started. Thank you Jenny for all your awesome tutorials!
Okay Jenny, I have watched the Dresden Blooms Quilt tutorial 3 or 4 times. You are convincing me that even I can do the Dresden design! I have always loved this pattern, so I am going to give it a shot. I mean I only have maybe 1 or 20 jelly rolls in my stash. I will have to send pictures sometime of my "collection" of fabric. And this will be only the fabric "out". Does not count the UFO's that are in the closet and in the dresser and a few other places that we will not mention!!! You are such a joy to watch and unfortunately, for you, you remind me of me! I enjoy life and I enjoy "watching birds". I love all the tutorials that you and your wonderful gals and guys produce. “Lean back, hold on and sew along”! OMGosh I was cracking up because that’s exactly how I sew my strips. Another great tutorial. A singleton of this Dresden with a small border would make a cute dolly quilt for that special little girls’ favorite doll. I have to find a girl - we have all grandsons! LOL.
Love the whimsical look it gives....how about using a black fabric background and different solid coordinating circles for the center, which would give you a look of the Dresden floating on the background...you could also look into using different size Dresdens and have fun placing them whimsical on the solid background.
This is another great project have had a Dresden template for about 20 years and never used it I think this will get me going ,can use scrap pieces for this 😀✂️

All of your tutorials are so fun and informative! I love this pattern and plan to start this pattern (similar) next week. Love that you don't have to use all the 'fancy' tools that I feel like I need to buy to make a project i.e. coffee cup, roll of tape, etc. I've learned so much from your tutorials..not just quilts but other projects,too!
Sew good to have a left handed quilter on UA-cam! I'm also a lefty (my whole family is). I noticed that you use the rotary cutter in either hand & scissors in your right. My sister did everything with her left, Mom scissor cut & ironed right handed& I'm in between.
I just find you so infectious to watch, your tutorials are absolutely fantastic and I’ve learnt so much. You make learning so much fun with your humour as well. Your the best teacher online.

I’ve done this too for the center of a Dresden, my grandma called them yo-yos.

It made me think of my Christmas Tree skirt. If you only did 19, used a Christmas fabric and left it open it would make a beautiful skirt for a tree.
that's Lovely! the centre circle would also look good with 4 gentle curves to make it look like a flower too.

I love this quilt and I love making Dresdens. For the center, I like the method that Jenny used in a video from about 10 years ago (!!), using a cardboard template. I prefer when the center circle is not raw edged, but turned under instead. Either way, this is a fabulous quilt, and a great video. I'm going to make this one for sure.

Dresden plate is the best and Jenny always comes up with the best variations. I have made her dresden turkey, patchwork dresden, and I also made Christmas wreath dresden wall hanging. Its such a fun block to make. I love this new variation too!

I love the Dresden pattern but never felt I could do it justice. Jenny and her team figure out these amazing short cuts that look so complex yet are much easier. So I'm headed to MSQC to order the Dresden ruler, can't wait to get started. Thank you Jenny for all your awesome tutorials!
Okay Jenny, I have watched the Dresden Blooms Quilt tutorial 3 or 4 times. You are convincing me that even I can do the Dresden design! I have always loved this pattern, so I am going to give it a shot. I mean I only have maybe 1 or 20 jelly rolls in my stash. I will have to send pictures sometime of my "collection" of fabric. And this will be only the fabric "out". Does not count the UFO's that are in the closet and in the dresser and a few other places that we will not mention!!! You are such a joy to watch and unfortunately, for you, you remind me of me! I enjoy life and I enjoy "watching birds". I love all the tutorials that you and your wonderful gals and guys produce. You all are my "you tube" family! Thank you.

A singleton of this Dresden with a small border would make a cute dolly quilt for that special little girls’ favorite doll. I have to find a girl - we have all grandsons! LOL.

Love the whimsical look it gives....how about using a black fabric background and different solid coordinating circles for the center, which would give you a look of the Dresden floating on the background...you could also look into using different size Dresdens and have fun placing them whimsical on the solid background.
This is another great project have had a Dresden template for about 20 years and never used it I think this will get me going ,can use scrap pieces for this 😀✂️

All of your tutorials are so fun and informative! I love this pattern and plan to start this pattern (similar) next week. Love that you don't have to use all the 'fancy' tools that I feel like I need to buy to make a project i.e. coffee cup, roll of tape, etc. I've learned so much from your tutorials..not just quilts but other projects,too!
Sew good to have a left handed quilter on UA-cam! I'm also a lefty (my whole family is). I noticed that you use the rotary cutter in either hand & scissors in your right. My sister did everything with her left, Mom scissor cut & ironed right handed& I'm in between.
