Differential Locks + Inter-axle - Training Video
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 гру 2017
- When the differential is locked on Detroit rear axles, both wheels will always turn at the same speed which greatly improves forward traction in situations such as snow and ice; or uneven surfaces like loading docks, curbs, or road shoulders.

That was a fantastic explanation. I watched somebody's video on the same issue but it was poorly explained, but yours is well understood
Oh that was a great part of trucking knowledge 😊. Thankyou very much sir
Youre a moron. And anyone who gave you a thumbs up is a moron.
@@ThunderAppeal hahahahha..... me, ok.
But why others? 😂
Thanks for this video, I'm looking up anything I don't fully understand while reading my CDL manual.
I was always told to stop dump the clutch flip the switch then go. But im in a 2004 IHC dump truck.
Would love to have double lockers on Hendrickson solid walking beam.
nice animation easy to understand
One of my 2020 Freightliners, I ran for 400+ miles with the interlock engaged. We will see what damage was done! It now has 300,000 miles and no issues yet!
I done same thing today , one question when switch on light comes on and when truck move on normal road light go away and then come back ? Any advice
Awesome Video!🎥
looks nice
I think you can drive for extended periods with diff lock on, as long as you aredoing it with appropriate speed
My truck has problem when I turn differential switch on I hear air does something but only one rear wheel spinning on passenger side. What can be the problem? What's need be checked or replaced?
Que pena que a Detroit não está mas no brasil.ela tinha o melhor motor a diesel do país .alta performance
Detroit Série 60??12.7L
Best regards to video
Good luck.
What about locking the inter axle and differential at the same time?
More traction less turning ability. Power divider puts power to both axles, differential lock put power to both set of tires on which ever axle locks.
In a turn the distance the inside wheels travel is less than the outside wheels. With full locks engaged they have to change the distance traveled through spinning over the ground instead of driving over it. This increases the wear on the tires and can lead to drive line failures in dry pavement conditions as the weakest part of the system fails.
I should have sent this video to my bro Brian before he destroyed my diffs on my 91 ford LTL 9000 truck but what the hell can i do bout it now great video by the way!!!
How about with 3 axles? The first interaxle should split 33-67%
6x4 without interaxle lock(or as i have use to know it, cross lock) is like having a arm without fingers..
I always thought it was posi-traction. Which rlly makes more sense
Would be harder to steer the truck and wear out the tires
explain only inter axle working
Actually, it is best to activate the power lock when the vehicle is at a complete stop (no wheels spinning whatsoever), never while moving or else that can cause serious damage to the power divider...
Unless you're turning or having a wheel spinning the differential and outputs are spinning at the same rpm making them perfectly fine to engage. Which is why they specifically state not to lock it up while experience loss of traction. The locking mechanism simply couples an output to the carrier preventing it from spinning faster or slower. So long as the output and carrier rpm are the same it's perfectly fine. At speed its unnecessary to use unless you're on very slippery surfaces and expect to need it. Same reason why light duty 4wd vehicles are fine to shift in and out up to 60mph (not low range).
@@KTMcaptain Agreed, what is important is that speed difference is small so there is no shock when it locks and there is enough time for the dog clutch go in all the way. In fact if you engage it while stationary it might not actually engage until you start moving if the dog clutch teeth are not lined up right, can be seen at 0:48 they are perfectly lined up, but in real life they often won't be.
What do you do when the lock won’t unlock?
Then u have a problem
WAHTS WRONG WITH THE AD ? KEEPS REPLAYING
Dide terti mang.
I have my interaxle locked for 6 months straight doing 120km hour 🤷♂️
I’ve never unlocked mine either in 8 years of trucking in northern Alberta.
Inter axle locks up to a max of 25 mph what about dif locks?
1604viewer stopped, some allow locking if going dead straight
why not weld diff? is better for driving when you have rwd even normal driving is better with welded diff
@@LfsJujek A welded diff is definitely not better for "normal" driving lol, unless you like your tires skipping and dragging and getting worn down, and having a hard time turning corners.
Differentials exist in all road cars and trucks for a reason.
@@LfsJujek We like to be able to turn corners, and not get plowed straight forward instead.
@@Tb0n3 maybe in tractor you will go straight, bmw e36 dont have this problem when You have a little better tires in front, my friend driving on welded diff like 5years and only one time he break axe while drifting it, i plann weld diff in my e36 also after i do rear subframe reinforcment
hi bro manitobor?
👍
Ausgezeichnet 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

The Animation at 0:47 is wrong...
Agreed - the animation of the inter axle diff is incorrect
I attempted to use this video to explain to a colleague how an inter axle diff works and the incorrect animation made my job much harder...
Where is a good animation?
It looks correct to me based off the images found. Here is the diff disassembled and it resembles the inter axle differential. The only difference is no carrier. On the real diff the spider gears are held by the carrier which is splined to the input. The output gear for the front axle is combined with the transfer gear, just like in the image linked. images.app.goo.gl/g8epkUz4sXhfsAQE9
@@KTMcaptain Actually based on the image you showed my statement get's proven. You can clearly see the spline in the pinion (spider) gear carrier. So the Differential inputshaft drives the carrier. In the animation the pinion gears are rotating stationary which is not possible with that meachnism when the inputshaft rotates. That's it!
Hi

“Just an FYI guys... You can’t Lock a Tag Axel.”
unless its a tri-drive? Those do exsist more prevalently in heavy haul. But I cant imagine not being able to lock all 3 diferentials to each other.
And never make a u turn with diff locks.

- whom mean nothing
_
differential is invented only for corners for all other cases is to stupid
_
is invented because must and not because is perfection
- but no one is busy to push to next level no one in world
_
it even prevent to driving on some hills in difficult situation
- the wheel whom need all power hi turning not but the wheel whom does not need power just slip
- vehicle can not more made movement
_
and the modern cars use brake on wheel whom free turning
- and they think is solved

whom mean nothing
What is it a piece of junk can't use it but for so long sup with that oh made in America
I keep my KW900. Those freightliners have electrical problems from hell
Fuky
I think the system is useless in trucks
yes, totally useless. Unless drive axle raised and can't touch the ground, but that's rare...
Fack me how ugly this American trucks are, specially the interior
The new version is basically useless. Its original purpose was not what the modern trucking industry turned it into. Especially with the 25mph limit on them. Used to could use it at any speed because who tf was going to travel 25mph 😂 people dont even drive that slow with chains on
