Louie, keep living a peaceful life, boring but peaceful. Just think, if you never play golf you will never miss a 3 foot putt that was a must make. You are a Smart Man!, FR
hey, that's really cool. i've fought that solvent for many regrippings over the last 40 years. as retired construction guy i've found a new use for my air compressor!
Not that using solvent is a pain in the rear, it's just messy for the person that regrips clubs once a year or so. Either way, it's just another look at regripping clubs.
I use the air method and have for years. Its easy and you can actually adjust or remove the grip and use it on another club without destroying it. This is THE WAY!
Thank You for your video. I am going to regrip my clubs and use this method. No, things didn't all go perfectly when you did it, but you DID it! We all owe you a debt of gratitude for the effort.
It will help if you use a double sided tape and a hand sterilisation jelly . Easier to put the grip on and it dries INA few seconds. Many times don't even need air.
You can use masking tape and paint thinner. Wrap the shaft with tape, wipe some thinner on it and shove your grip on and adjust. The thinner emulsifies the top side of the tape and it becomes two sided.
My Neighbor a man who's had lot of experience told me today, wrap with masking tape and use lighter fluid, same as paint thinner I'd think, so that's what I'm going to do with this new Winn Mid-size pistol grip for my Dunlop putter.
I changed my driver grip using one of those can dusters. It actually worked. I just stuck the red nozzle that comes with it into the hole at the end of the grip and it slid right on.
Once you get the grip on, it won't move at all. I understand your question though. The solvent method would be better for a beginner because it is easier to adjust the grip once it is put on and before the solvent dries. The air method is great and less messy, and you can play with your clubs right away instead of waiting overnight for solvent to cure.
Excellent info. Just regrip my first golf club, since watching your video. After 50 yrs playing golf, this was first time I understand how simple changing grips, without buying a new club. Will this improve my game, hope so. Late Father in Law, said you always have to look GOOD, in order to play GOOD Clubs looking GOOD.
Bahahahaha!! Was thinkin same thing , and should probably have end of shaft he’s gripping at least another 10-12”’s further from vice if needing more flex & wobble !
@@supahbob94 , Not the BBQ light fluid man... haha. Nope. Lighter fluid is highly volatile and evaporates quickly. As a matter of fact, after about a month of playing squirt an old tshirt with lighter fluid and rub the grips down. Takes the built up sweat and grime off and grips are as tacky as new.
I think you should have end of shaft closer to vice, seems quite wobbly. So I’ve watched a few “re-grip” vids and how does grip adhere to plain ol’ masking tape? And how did u line the grip up for address sakes? You mentioned it but never said anything about it while ya were blowing on your shaft!! Hehehe
Very good video with a few problems. The club should be supported closer to the butt end. Using heat is the correct way to remove old tape. You should always use double sided adhesive grip tape. I use the PUR grip gun. It slips over the butt end of the grip and has the correct nozzle size. I only need 2 sprays of grip solvent. The air pushes out the excess solvent and grips are playable in a half hour.
I would be worried about the grip slipping when its 90 degress, the clubs have been sitting in your trunk and the grips get soft. It would be a confidence thing for me, my swing is already bad enough I don't need to be worried about my club grips slipping. Good funny video, I'm sure it works but I'll stick to the way it's been done for decades that is proven to work.
good idea, unfortunately most ppl probably dont have a box cutter let alone an air compressor at their house. I have more tools than most, but I still never bought a compressor.
I found it a bit awkward to keep the grips from buckling sidewise while I was pushing them onto the shafts. Next time, I'll try slipping a short piece of PVC pipe over the butt end of the grip to limit how far it can buckle (say, about 2/3 the length of the grip). Also, since the grips tend to telescope a bit during installation, I found it helpful to mark the shaft where you want the bottom of the grip to end up.
Sure u can do this way. However not everyone has a compressor and using double sided sticky tape to me is much more efficient on the grip it's just extra security that the grip isn't going anywhere.
Cut old grip off, apply new double sided tape if necessary, spray shaft/tape and inside of grip with WD-40, place grip over end of shaft, apply air, slide grip on. Done in 2 or 3 minutes and ready to use in less than an hour. I've replaced grips, drove to the course....5 miles, and they were ready to use.
Thanks! It's fairly easy to be honest. Air is easy to do and you can always reset the grip of you got it crooked. Plus if you want to change the grip you can pull it off with air without ruining it.
I like it because it's less mess and I can change grips without ruining them in case I didn't like it. If you want to add thickness you can always add more wraps. That way you can slowly ease up to the thickness you like without ruining multiple grips. A guy I played golf with one day told me about it. I was explaining to him I had just put a driver grip on the night before and didn't like it much and was a bit upset that it would be a $10 waste and he said to put them on with air, they are ready to go right after you put them on and you can remove them without ruining them.
You used the hook blade pretty much like a straight blade. The reason you would need a hook blade is more for graphite shafts to prevent scratching them. And.....put the hook blade at an angle where it won't scratch the shaft. Otherwise good video for teaching a beginner, but you should have had a smaller tip. 😉
You made it look way harder than so simple double side tape and alcohol that dries in 3 minutes. Also allows you to adjust the grip to align it for around 30 seconds. Not to mention, the grip will shift at the butt end if you're a faster swing player or playing in humid conditions. There is a reason every tour truck, every store, every club builder and every pro uses double sided tape.
Those grips are nice but they last half the time as a premium golf grip... qhen covering the hole it doesn't "help out" as much as stopping debris from going in the club
You could use the compressed air to get the old grip off too. Also the box cutter could have been used to remove the old double sided tape. You got the job done but I could have done at least 3 or 4 in the time this video took.
Careful of this method. Faster swing speed players apply alot of torque to the handle of the club, causing the grip to shift. Double-sided tape, a little bit of solvent and a hook blade is all you need. 60 seconds a grip. Too keep it clean, have a towel and a catch pan for the solvent. You also won't need an expensive air compressor. Good luck!
Get rid of that long air tip and get a short rubber tip , much easier. Put new grips on right over the shaft . You actually get a better bond against the steel.
What pressure are you using with your compressor? I have a small portable used for blowing up tyres, balls, inflatabe boats and blowing off. Is that enough?
I had mine set at a standard 120PSI, however, you could get away with as low as 80. If it's one of those without a tank reservoir it most likely won't work. You would need at least a small pancake air compressor like this - amzn.to/2QECBD4
No. There isn’t glue when using double sided tape other than the stickiness of the tape. The solvent is what allows you to slide it on over the tape without it sticking. Putting it on with air allows it to expand the grip to slide on. Technically the grip ID is smaller than the shaft OD so that keeps it on.
The whole point of the demo was that he used air, compressed air, which most people won't have but there you go. Didn't need that messy stuff called solvent
Since the masking tape isn't adhering to the grip, why even bother with the tape (except at the top of the shaft where you don't want anything going in the little hole on the grip)? Masking tape is pretty slippery on the non-adhesive side; probably no more grippy than the shaft. Or is it just to increase the shaft diameter (only about 10 mil)?
JFC man!!! Do you run in the hallways with a scissors up your nose too!? The way you cut the grip sent shivers down my back! One slip and you were about to leave more than a little mineral spirit on the floor! Hold the club head under your arm and cut the grip AWAY from yourself! THEN put the club in the vise! Safety first and always.
I've done the same procedure before and the butt of the grip comes loose everytime. I've tried multiple grip types and they all came loose. Even the strongest hairsprays broke free over time. The only thing that has yet to fail is rubbing alcohol as the solvent and double sided grip tape under the grip. Trust me...air doesn't work in the long-term.
Used air for years and never had a problem. I use oversize grips now or build up a regular grip so lots more stretch to the grip. Before I didn't and still worked fine. I use frog tape because it is thicker, close to double-sided tape. The real benefit is you can get the grip to feel perfect. I am fussy so it takes 4 or 5 attempts sometimes because the taper is different on many shafts and I want the groove in the wrap style in exactly the right spot.
Scott N glad it worked for you. I had nothing but failure after failure with air. Friends that used air eventually had slippage also. I practice daily...that may be the issue.
On that, I'm not sure. However using this method to install that grip will ensure you can just blast it with a quick burst of air to move it if need be vs having to ruin it if it's on wrong. Sorry I couldn't help you on that.
I believe that you have made a mistake about which tape you are using. First, at the 3:00 minute mark in your video, you said that you didn't need two sided tape just 2 inch masking tape. Then later at the 4:47 minute mark in your video, you said that you were going to put 2 sided tape on the shaft, or at least you indicated that was what you were doing. You have a great video, put since it is an instructional video you should consider correcting it. Still Great Job, FR
Lucky it was just your grip! I blew up my whole house, but later recalled I'd accidently used dynamite instead of a new grip and a blowtorch instead of an air blow gun.
what do you do if you put it on crooked? Be kinda hard to turn it into place if you didnt get it perfect first try. Also let me go spend a bunch of money on an air compressor rather than 5$ for some solvent.... cause thats the easy way?
When the air expands the grip it allows you to move it to where you want it to be. So if it’s crooked give it a quick blast of air until it’s straight.
Let us know when the shaft comes shooting out of that grip when you play. The solvent and the double sided tape method means good adhesion in the long run. Sure, you can go play golf "right now" but humans have this incredible ability to understand that there is such a thing as the future and we are able to plan accordingly. I choose to plan when to do a grip change, use the solvent method and then no one gets killed when my club comes shooting out of my grips. Good luck. You'll need it.
I tried this method. You couldn't pull off that grip no matter how strong you are. I put them on last year and no club has flown off the grip. And if the grip twists, you are using a death grip during your swing so you have a lot more problems with your swing than a twisting grip. The whole point of this is install and play immediately. Can't do that with solvent. Also, what about trying a new grip? Try it and if you don't like it use air to remove and sell to someone else.
I've refrained from making any comment replies like the one you replied to as I know it's not the case and they are just saying what they think might happen. Again, I'm not making anyone do this so they can all think what they want to think.
Maybe spread some contact cement all over the masking tape (after the tape is on the shaft) and then spread some inside the grip too -- but that is going to take at least a day to dry, and you'd probably want to use some solvent to make it slip on a bit easier . . . Just saying that double sided tape is not that nice to use, but I don't have that much trouble with it. The easiest method is just to pay the grip guy at Roger Dunn/World Wide Golf the $30 for set installation.
Billy Graham Contact cement? Why would anyone use any kind of glue on a golf grip? You use double sided tape, not masking tape. The single sided masking tape is build up tape. You can use that to make the grip feel thicker if you want by putting it on the shaft and then double sided tape over the build up tape. I’ll continue to use grip solvent to put grips on, but the air trick is something to remember for a fast repair.
Thanks, the comments that your video inspired were just too too funny. I just bought new grips and the install kit with solvent and if I do get my hands messy I will proceed to my sink and wash them. OR I could go out and buy an air compressor? Hmmm.. decisions, decisions.
This guy is reality comedy, he didn't mean too but some of the shit he did like always looking a t the camra after he's done talking and forgetting scissors and walking off 🤣
Splag Yetsi you can just use regular masking tape.. it doesn't need to be double-sided tape if you use the air compressor.. at least according to this video.. I might personally throw a strip of glue stick or quick shot of spray adhesive to lock that grip down once it's completely dry, but I honestly can't imagine those grips sliding around much if installed with air onto plain masking tape
Yes. The easy way. When you already have a air compressor, with the right adapter, a vice already on your wall somewhere, way too high, and a rubber holder. Just get the blade, some solvent and some muscle. Jesus

Otherwise good video for teaching a beginner, but you should have had a smaller tip. 😉
You made it look way harder than so simple double side tape and alcohol that dries in 3 minutes.

You could use the compressed air to get the old grip off too. Also the box cutter could have been used to remove the old double sided tape. You got the job done but I could have done at least 3 or 4 in the time this video took.
You're right. I've taken a few grips off with an air compressor. Most the time it's easier to just cut it off unless you wanted to save it.
Great effort mate, no need to buy potentially expensive kit!
That is awesome! Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome.
Good luck!
I like the solvent method because it is much easier to adjust the alignment of the grip especially while looking down the club in playing position

No. Single sided.
You’re right. I did correct myself in the edit of the video. I put text saying I meant standard 2” masking tape.
were'nt you supposed to take the backing tape off the double sided tape ??
Eileen it wasnt double sided tape.
BE VERY CAUTIOUS. I blew up my grip trying this method!
Lucky it was just your grip! I blew up my whole house, but later recalled I'd accidently used dynamite instead of a new grip and a blowtorch instead of an air blow gun.

Cmon..... who hired this guy for this comedy.
what do you do if you put it on crooked?
Right, I was thinking same thing
Billy Graham
Contact cement?
I didn't say the only way was to use air.
This guy is reality comedy, he didn't mean too but some of the shit he did like always looking a t the camra after he's done talking and forgetting scissors and walking off 🤣
Have you had any issues with the grip twisting or not being fully bonded
+Elizabeth D nope. It's on tight enough that you won't get any of that.
+Elizabeth D none at all. It's such a tight fit as it is you won't have problems.
I don't use tape or solvent; just air and nuts.
Why did you not use the old tape?
Nice thank you
Thanks for watching.
Was that double sided tape?
No. Just masking tape.
Prefer to use the solvent. Don't own compressor
I hear you. I also made a video using grip solvent.
It would take less time. He spent 30 seconds getting that grip on.......ugh!
A bike pump would probably work just as well...
Double sided tape very hard to get where I am. I guess I will have to use a version of doubled-over single sided tape.
I just did my wedge grip, if I can do it and this guy can do it anyone can do it. LOL
You know how many times I’ve use the solvent and double sided tape?? 🤦🏽♂️ you never have any issues with it spinning or moving ??
The best part of blowing grips on is not having to remove the old tape!
This is very true. No need to get out that hair dryer.
assuming its the right amount of tape for the new grip?
Neil Cameron it’s personal preference. You could use one layer or 5
@@wordogne I think he meant length not girth.
All grips are same length unless you get a long putter grip
I can't find your link to the grips.
You can find them here - www.golf-components.com/shducotegr.html
Thanks nice job.
Yes. The easy way. When you already have a air compressor, with the right adapter, a vice already on your wall somewhere, way too high, and a rubber holder. Just get the blade, some solvent and some muscle. Jesus
@@jerryinsc true. Just need a catcher. Vice just makes it easier to align and clean and stuff
Most real men already own a compressor and a vise. The rubber club chuck is $5 on Amazon. Vice, vice, baby...
