    Only a thought I always defer to you, my friend felt he wasn’t ready after preparing best he could. His dad didn’t want his son to over prepare working himself into frustration. So his father had him do nothing but long tones for 10 minutes per day the final week up until 2 days prior to the competition then he had him do nothing on the horn. His father wanted his son to have the freshest set of chops in the competition....this worked well for his son he did very well. Now, would the kid do well anyway, who knows. He did say he felt fresh.

      What you just described is very much consistent with what I teach. I want my students to complete all of the steps (I have a strategy that I teach with seven steps) early enough that they can stop practicing the music for a while before the audition. Your friend's father is very wise.

      Weekends are very difficult for me to respond right away. Due to my performance and teaching schedule. I hope your audition went well.

    Mr. Lewis, do you know anything about what's going on with the judging for all-state jazz? There's a mess going on and I was curious as if you knew any answers.

      No, sorry. I haven’t heard anything. I’ve been very busy over the weekend and hadn’t had a chance to check on any of that. I will see what I can find out.

      I also dont know much about the judging. Would like to hear about it

      @@MrTechTalkTutorials From what I understand, a region didn't submit recordings but the judging still took place. Now, they are going to rejudge the 10 of us that made it along with the 5 from that region. What I don't know is:
      When is this happening?
      If none of the 5 from that region make it, will the chair order of the 10 still be changed?
      WHO is judging???
      What would they do if someone with a high chair doesn't even make it after being rejudged?
      What are they going to do to make sure this doesn't happen again?
      To be honest, this mistake really upsets me because it's completely out of my control. I can't do anything about it and it's all because of an adult's error :/
      I'm just hopeful that my recording (as well as everyone else who did well) is liked just as much this time around.

      @@emmanuelacevedo3828 from what I've heard, this was the computer's mistake because the region tried to send then on time, but it didn't register. There could be a possibility that different judges are involved, but most likely it's the same judge panel. Same judges, fair to everybody.

    In your opinion is the Arban's book a good investment. I'm a sophomore in high school

    • @eltigredo
      @eltigredo  6 років тому

      I think every serious trumpet student should have a copy of the Arban book. Yes it’s a great book. I do NOT venerate it the way some other people do. I never saw it as the “magic pill” so many other players think it is, but it is a very important book.

    Hey, do any of you know how long an orchestral excerpt should be?

    • @eltigredo
      @eltigredo  5 років тому +1

      Hello Cassandra, orchestral excerpts can be any length. There are short ones and long ones. One of the short ones is the "Leonor Call" by Beethoven. I don't have it here in front of me, but I think it's like eight bars long or something like that. Then there are some longer ones, but I can't recall which ones are longer. I seem to remember Shostakovich 5 having a longer excerpt.
      And really, the whole excerpt concept is kind of twisted. There are some standard excerpts, but to be truly prepared for an audition, you REALLY should be familiarizing yourself with the entire part. Not just the eight bars with the cool trumpet stuff.
      A lot of the great players have copies of all the parts. I got mine from my last teacher who was a member of the Houston Symphony at the time.
      Anyway, I hope that helps a little.
