LEGO's Official Reason for Canceling the Temple of Doom Set...

- Today, we're talking about the three brand new LEGO Indiana Jones sets, but most importantly the seemingly canceled Temple of Doom set. LEGO has given me permission to show the leaked image of this set alongside of an official statement about the set.

I hate current society. Everyone finds any reason to be mad at everything
But seriously i really hope that they release this. It was my favorite Indiana jones movie of my childhood. Loved the aesthetic of the setting and the outfits, like seriously THAT SKULL was literally the coolest thing i had seen. And when the Old set was revealed in 2008 i was seriously more hyped than any other set i had ever seen at that time.
Temple of doom is trash F tier
@@googleuser3163 i mean i would say that your opinion takes the cake for that prize
@@googleuser3163 Better than anything you'll ever make. Great movie.
@@comebackguy8892 literally everyone thinks it's trash even Spielberg hates it
@@googleuser3163 It literally has an Imdb of 7.5/10, you moron 😂🤣
Let's be real tho. Who would find this set offensive? Like imagine being so alone and having so much time to get offended over a Lego set.
You should see the comments about the Nazi plane... A lot of those people granted are the Technic fans who got their Osprey canceled.
@@Ashnflash Lego cancelled the osprey set, not us
Ask someone from India how they feel about that movie.
@@1zieske1 I used to love temple of doom then I learned some of the basics of Hinduism and my god the whole tone changed I couldn't sit through it
It's weird because they already did Temple of Doom for the original line
If they worked closely with Lucasfilm, then this set obviously went through an extensive design phase. They even made a whole new mold for Mola Ram’s headpiece. They designed the whole box art, set number, etc. Absolutely bizarre to me that it wouldn’t release
The fact you're allowed to show the set gives me a lot of hope that it will come out. I love the original trilogy and these new sets are all lovely, so I really do hope that Lego didn't make this mistake for the 3rd? 4th? time in only a couple years, where they pull a set completely just a little before its release (Technic Osprey, Lego City Dynamite Factory spring to mind)
The three sets could theoretically still be cancelled. LEGO shouldn't be bullied into cancelling sets because people online get upset.
@@Ashnflash yet it happens unfortunately. take jabbas palace from 2012. it was retired a year early because people got mad over a roof
@@Staurcomb but why? it’s a building from a movie? it’s a star wars movie
@@cameronmeetze8153 I can somewhat understand the offence, but I don't get the anger at Lego and not Lucasfilm, considering no other toy/model company that has made a Jabba's Palace has received any such backlash
@@Ashnflash It’s the free market Ashnflash, deal with it
I'm going to go with your line of thought and say that it was a build/stability issue.
The foundation of the temple as well as from what you can see if the railroad tracks don't look the most detailed or stable for that matter, I also liked how you referenced all the other "risky" things from the other sets.
Maybe while they're at it they can fix the statue :P
@@Ashnflash yeah it looks a little too silly and not to mention the wrong colour
I’m that case I hope they take the time to improve the model so it’s a bit more stable especially with the mine cart tracks
You’re acting as if Lego doesn’t release some shaky sets.
Yeah I don't know. The set got to the stage of development where they made box art and a render of a build that didn't clear QA?
In my mind, it would be such a waste of time and resources developing that massive Temple of Doom set and never release it. It's more of a waste to cancel it last minute than to never have made it at all. I also feel like having a 4th set would make the launch wave that much stronger as it covers all 3 original movies and this Temple of Doom set is just impressive in how massive it is.
I don't know, I really can't judge the circumstances since I don't know why the set was cancelled be it for stability or fears of insensitivity. Like you said, the set might come out later anyway so for now I really can't come to a definite conclusion.
They cancelled the osprey when it was already showing up in stores so they don’t seem to care about the money lost on R/D
Large companies develop full products and cancel them. People just don't know it. Companies try to make profit and sometimes the best option is to cancel a bad product.
But on Lego's case the issue is small groups complaining details and not that Lego would make money with the cancelled sets also.
The Temple of Doom was always my favorite movie in the trilogy growing up. I have a lot of great memories watching it with my dad on Saturday mornings every now and again. I truly hope this is a delay in Lego's process that comes to pass. I'm dying to get that updated Mola Ram Skull headpiece! It looks just like it did in the Original Adventures videogame!
I sincerely hope that the set is just postponed, but I don't really believe it
This is one of the best LEGO waves in a long, long time. Reasonably priced cheaper sets with great builds and fantastic minifigures, and, most importantly - play features.
I think play features is the least important if youre older than 13
@@JohnBaillie18 I think there's no reason to assume that a person's age would prevent them from enjoying something designed to be fun.
@@JohnBaillie18 I kinda disagree. While I don’t play with my sets, there is a sort of satisfaction with getting the play feature to work. I’ve got my R2D2 on my desk with none of his accessories extended, but getting those to work as I was putting it together was enjoyable.
you made some VERY good points
everything happening with this theme is so confusing. it seems odd to bring back the theme for only 3 sets.
it would make more sense if it was only the 18+ diorama but it’s more than that
Thank you :)
Well, when Pirates 5 came out, the whole theme didn't return but only 1 set was made.
I have a bit of a theory. What if the Temple of Doom set comes out with two or three more sets from Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny After Indy 5 is released. It would make sense to have new sets out around when the next movie is released
I'm hoping this is the case
@Ashnflash and it is weird having two sets based around Raiders and only one for each film. They could do two for each film, like one more for temple of Doom, two for Skull, Etc.. which can be remakes of previous Indy sets
@@nickrayer3776 Not really. Raiders is the most iconic film and most people's favourite one. It's like saying it's weird that Lego makes more sets based on the original trilogy for Star Wars vs the prequels or sequels
@Joe Victor that's fair.
@@joevictor53 My favourite one is The Last Crusade. Besides, this is the most underestimated part by Lego, which hurts me a lot.
The irony of this statement coming just as Harrison Ford presented an Oscar to his TOD co-star Ke Huy Quan, a reunion that's been described as heartwarming by many sources.
And Willie Scott was also in the audience.
@@Ashnflash I didn't see the broadcast (I used to be a big Oscar-viewer, but since I haven't yet seen the vast majority of this year's nominees, I didn't see any point), but it makes sense that Kate Capshaw would be there, seeing as her husband, Spielberg, was nominated for The Fabelmans. Who'd have thought that 39 years later, the main TOD players would be reunited in the same place?
You 100% have my respect, you respectfully called out LAN for their double standards. It's rare to see people take a stand.
The reason why is because _LucasFilms,_ under _Disney’s_ control, wanted to focus on the things they deemed to be “iconic.” Probably some focus group said that “Temple of Doom” isn’t as iconic or “well-loved” as the other two films and, therefore, they wanted to focus on those two films.
It’s also worth noting that they made _zero_ sets for “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” even though that was a more recent film release. However, because some people criticized it as a “bad film,” no one wants to touch that film (even though it’s not really that bad).
They made many sets for kingdom of the crystal skull, the amphibious car, the dig site in peru, and the temple to name a few
@@imdurant, back when the film was released recently and under George Lucas’s management.
Disney would sooner throw anything they deem to be “unprofitable” under the bus rather than give it any sense of Justice.
@@imdurant 🤦🏿♂️🤣
I loved the crystal skull film. It was very over the top, but Indiana Jones always has been like that.
but, Temple of doom IS iconic, and many fans love it more now of Crystal skull
Dear Lego, I WANT THIS SET NOW!!
I second this
I'm really hoping this just means there were too many sets around this time that they wanted to delay one to the next wave or there were problems with the build and they wanted to redo it. Seems weird that they'd allow you to show it off if they wanted to cancel it and make it seem like it never existed. I think and hope it's just coming out later in the year or a redone version next year
Other than build issues, I think either Lucasfilm didn’t approve of the build (it looks a little goofy) or they only wanted to release 3 sets to test the market. I doubt Lucasfilm doesn’t want to promote Temple of Doom since we’re getting Hasbro figures
If they didn't like the build it would never have gotten this far into production.
Honestly, it’s a set that could really use a rework anyways. I’m hoping they release a better version later down the line, along with maybe some other scenes from Temple of Doom (like the Shanghai chase, the bridge, Pankot Palace, or even Lao Che’s plane.)
I have a feeling that theyll release something for Temple of Doom eventually, it would be too weird to do a indiana jones theme without including sets for each of the original 3 movies, my hope tho for this theme is that we end up getting a diaroma set similar to the Raiders one for each of the original three movies. The updated Mola Ram figure is also so good that to not release him would be such a shame
If they did a set with the bridge battle from the end of Temple of Doom that I think would be really cool if they made it so the bridge could collapse and everything
I would also love to see a set of the Grail temple with the Grail Knight and the room with all the challaces and we could get a figure for Donovan and an updated Elsa Schneider
I wish they would release a shanghai set from temple of doom, there could be so many cool parts and play features
Every statement Lego ever puts out is just some half-butt beat around the bush non answer to the actual question statement.
This this makes me think they’re holding Temple of Doom back to launch with the new films sets , so there aren’t too many sets available at once, cannibalising sales of this first wave
It’s weird for this set to get fully canceled. They went through literally every development process for the set and decided like 2 months before release to cancel it.
I'm pretty sure that they are going to release it - maybe September? That way they can roll out any sets from the Dial of Destiny, and maybe a few smaller sets from the other movies. Just a guess, but it would make sense marketing wise.
I just love the fact that this was offensive yet a litteraire nazi plane and pilot is good to go
Can’t they just make another Lego Indy set for the bridge
Yeah, from what I heard from the statement, the Temple of Doom set may not actually have been cancelled. If anything, it might've just been delayed. While I kinda prefer the original sets from the 2000s mainly because of nostalgia, I do like these new sets too.
Don’t you think hasbro would have said no long before a box and stuff. Most toy company has to show concept art and get approval before making stuff
Our last chance to get a Temple of Doom set is gone forever...
Did you Watch the video? Cause that really wasnt the main point to it.
not necessarily, still a chance it could just be delayed
It might not be gone, It could have been delayed.
I still have hope that it'll eventually be released
Even if we never get this set there’s still other scenes from temple of doom we can get E.G. the Shanghai bar from the start, the plane, the river rapids, the final bridge battle etc etc etc
You dont know that😏
This was a day one buy for me, hands down. And I'm sure it was for many, many others. I hope Lego realizes this and releases this set.
Revisiting this a year later.... still nothing, which is just sad. Sounds like Lego is reconsidering never doing sets for the Indiana Jones property due to how Disney handled this canceled temple of doom set. Very frustrating.
Maybe they'll rework the Temple of Doom as an 18+ set and release it as a follow up to the Temple of the Golden Idol next year. That could be a game plan to keep the series running a bit longer after the hype for the 5th film has passed and the waves of standard sets have come and gone. Three or four 18+ sets over the next three or four years would be most welcomed.
I'm wondering if it's the same issue as the Marvel Mech builds last year, and there's just an engineering/design issue that has to be fixed. Or maybe they don't want all the sets to drop at once, and trying to pace the larger Indy sets out, so they don't overwhelm at retail. Those are the two most logical reasons, I feel.
What pisses me off more than anything, is that they went through with this set up until the last minute. Both Lego and Lucasfilm thought “Yeah, this is fine,” for a while, and then at the last minute, they said “Acktuallie, this might be offensive.” Lego, you’re telling me that you thought this was a good idea, which it is, and then cancelled it at the last minute because of what’s in it? So f***ing dumb.
It still sucks that this was canceled. It looked so cool and I never got the original
It's delayed to the second wave. There was a malfunction in the build, and the rails kept collapsing
It's not risky if you say it's risky. To me that's just a scene from a movie that I watched when I was 7 years old.
This line of thinking with the Temple of Doom set is hopefully more spot on than other theories. As you pointed out, all four sets carry risky elements inherited from the films. Heck, both the Lost Tomb and the Temple of Doom heavily deal with religious deities. When I read Lego's statement about optimizing their Indiana Jones product line, maybe that is what they are doing for the Temple of Doom set? The back lash for its aesthetics were definitely loud and hopefully Lego is taking that seriously and redesigning the set! Because if you think about it, three sets that perfectly replicate their source material then one set that clearly doesn't would make an odd line up.
I suppose I'd be too hard to just say either yes its canceled or no it's not canceled.
If they are worried about Stereotypes and racism just cancel the whole Ninjago
It's not canceled, it's being released in June, when the second wave of Retro Collection figures, which includes the "Temple of Doom" wave, is being released. "Temple of Doom" Retros, "Temple of Doom" Lego set.
What’s your source for this?
Liar it was never released
Lego really missed their chance to say, "celebrate Ke Huy Quan's Oscar win with this new Short Round figure that started his career."
My students and I talked about this set and we all agreed that it looks incredibly weak at the base of the temple. It’s cool, and my anthropology class would love to get it when it comes out.
I think any setpieces that were levels in the Lego Indy games should be fair game. Hopefully they will release more sets over the summer:
Raiders of the Lost Ark:
Ravenwood Barfight
The Flying Wing
The Truck Chase
Ark Opening Ceremony
Temple of Doom:
Club Obi Wan
Pankot Palace
The Bridge Showdown
The Last Crusade:
The Circus Train Pursuit
Tomb of Sir Richard
Venice Boat Chase
Brunwald Castle
Motorcycle Chase
The Tank
Temple of the Holy Grail
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull:
The Rocket Sled
The Jungle Cutter
Temple of Akator
Heck, I’d love to see some sets based off the Young Indy TV show or some of the games
Maybe they decided to delay it because if The Temple of Doom had come out, that’d be 2 very expensive sets for sale at once. Nonetheless, I have hope it’ll come out. LEGO wouldn’t just design new figs for Willie Scott and Short Round, and specific printing for Indie, just to not release it. They’ll probably just release it during the second wave, with the new LEGO Indie sets.
I really hope
The set could be canceled for sure. But it was speculated that Escape From the Lost Tomb was going to be $80 but after an official reveal it’s $40. $80 was the price of The Temple of Doom set. Maybe a mistake on the retailer (Target) but it could potentially be released after a delay for that $80 if it’s coming. As well speculation said that Temple of Doom would a Target exclusive. Could be canceled but seems possible for a delay.
Hopefully it's just delayed,TOD is my personal favorite of the series. We need an updated Short Round,he's an Oscar winner now.
I hope the temple of doom comes out eventually! This was my favorite movie as a kid and I missed out on the original set and it's crazy expensive on the aftermarket now. Fingers crossed!
Statement feels like “we’re not cancelling it, just delaying it”.
The Temple of Doom is cool and i realy hope that it will eventually apear. I also hope that one day Lego will finally make a set with the Temple of Holy Grall, preferably as a UCS. Btw, Grall is the only one artefact from Indiana Jones that was never appeared in any Lego sets.
Temple of doom would fit the ucs type to I want the bridge scene
I hope this set comes out eventually I want it so bad. I recently found 2 of the sets already and I would love to add this one to the collection
As an avid Indiana Jones fan since I was 5, and being too young to buy the original series, seeing these sets makes me so happy. And even tho the temple set is very clunky, goofy, and not accurate, I was most excited for that one out of the 3 that were originally announced. I just really hope it isn’t canceled.
Looking at it, I could definitely see how it could be a build stability issue, and I really hope that's all it is. I find it really weird that lego didn't mention it at all, but all I know is that it would be unfortunate to only have have sets from movies 1 and 3 of one of the greatest trilogies of all time. Ideally we get more than one Indy wave, and in that next wave they give us a bigger, less off-looking Temple of Doom.
Id kill to get an updated version of that set with the lava cage and a sliding floor opening mechanism.
@@operatorspectre7428 Right? Honestly, if it's delayed because it's being redone, that would actually be awesome. Just from the look of it, this is definitely the weakest set from this wave (just in terms of accuracy to the scene), and I would love if they just turned it into something perhaps a little more similar to the temple of the golden idol.
@Nathan Wharton yeah it truly frustrates me that they would leave such important details of that iconic scene out. Like yeah i get it is pretty dark but from a collectible standpoint it would be awesome
@@operatorspectre7428 Especially with them marketing so hard that LEGO is for adults just as much as it is for kids. Just slap an 18+ label on the set and give us those details lol. Can't be that hard, right?
Would be sad not to get one sleeve Indy and Short Round. Those are iconic.
2:15 and I'm grateful they went out of their way to accurately recreate a genuinely good movie.
Really leaning towards the delay being a structural thing. Maybe we’ll get this early June or in August.
I really do hope that LEGO makes a set based off Temple of Doom atleast. A few ideas like the bridge scene, the palace, and the room with the traps and stuff
Actually a few people have made mocks of this set using instructions, their own pieces, and pieces which they ordered online.
I am at least hoping that they will make more lego indiana jones sets such as the temple of the holy grail and a upgrade of the Temple of the crystal skull and Hoping that they will try to sell the temple of doom as a little fixing change up.
Bro this set piece is where the dude gets his heart ripped and lowered into lava
And that feature isn’t in the set. Just like how the Death Star doesn’t include a version of planets to blow up
Just replace the Kali statue with a skull. Worked with the old set.
I’m so disappointed
This is such a vague non-statement that only a corporation could ever make.
The Temple of Doom was my favorite Indiana Jones film as a kid, I always wanted to get my hands on the set but never got the chance..
*I was believing I could fulfill my childhood dreams.*
The fact that they let u (a LAN member ) show it in ur video, I strongly believe it’s not cancelled 🫠 if it’s cancelled why even let u show it in a video to make fans angry 😂 (maybe it’s a marketing tactic to get fans’ attention 👀)
This comment aged like milk
My only issue with this wave is the lack smaller sets ...I wish they did a set of Indy shooting the guy with the sword or something small like that in a set ...I love the sets just wish they released more variety...
yeah, it's a little weird to ONLY remake 3 existing sets rather than expanding upon the catalog, like remakes are cool but why not add in additional sets of things they haven't made.
the fireplace scene from the last crusade is way more iconic than the fighter plane imo. that would be a dope set. the lost city of petra from last crusade. the arc opening from raiders. there's too many. also would have preferred a shanghai chase remake than the lost temple. not complaining by any means, i'm so excited for these sets and i'm going to buy all of them. it's just weird, this can't be the only 3 they release it just wouldn't make sense.
@@lowkeykane7209 exactly..you hit the nail on the head...those are all amazing scenes...the fireplace scene and even the scenes in Venice from the last crusade would have been cool...idk I feel like they are playing it too safe with these sets...I hope there are some more sets on the way 🤞🏽
I really want the circus train from 3 and Young Indiana Jones
I know alot of people don't like it, but I hope they still make new sets based on crystal skull
Well, I’m very very glad they’re acknowledging it, rather than pretending like the set doesn’t exist. This whole situation has been so weird from the beginning though. Honestly if I had to guess, this time around, it isn’t LEGO’s fault, but rather Lucasfilm’s. There’s just so many odd things happening with this wave for me to think it’s strictly a LEGO thing.
The Temple of doom set doesn’t look too good Imo. the other three sets look much better so I can understand them cancelling the Temple. It would probably be a predictable weak seller
People are too soft these days…. It’s a TOY based on a MOVIE
Lego: someone might find it offensive :0
Also lego: Nazi plane go burrrrrrrrrr
The Kali statue looks like an oni emoji 👹
I think the new Temple of Doom looks pretty dump and is a major downgrade from the original. That said, your analysis is spot on and if they're holding it back for reasons of "offensiveness" it would be ludicrous. I really hope some focus group gave them reason to go back and do better with that set.
Right on! The old school set blows this one out of the ciffside!
The issue definitely has something to do with the Thuggee. Mola Ram was also cancelled in Hasbro's Adventure Series. So it's more than likely a Lucasfilm issue, which is frustrating.
I mean they had already made a Temple of Doom set in 2009, maybe a brand new set would have been better - Lao Che's casino maybe? And maybe a better Last Crusade set - The Grail Temple including Donovan and the Grail Knight?
Perhaps that had doubts about it selling well so are seeing how the others do first.
my only true sadness is not being able to get little shorty....
I just find the idea strange of Lego literally cancelling a set when it's so close to release with photo leaks already being out, especially considering how long I assume it took to design it etc. That's my hopeful excuse as to why it has been delayed instead of cancelled, but all I can do now is hope
In short: there’s no guarantee that it’ll be cancelled, LEGO just wants to focus on a smaller lineup for now until further notice
I read that a target employee saw the set in their “inventory” and got delayed, not cancelled, to august 1st.
Pretty crazy Lego can make an ark of the covenant, which is offensive to a lot of Jews and Christians. A Nazi, which is also highly offensive to the same groups. But all of a sudden racism and slavery are a problem.
I’m agreeing with you that it’s most likely releasing later.considering the stuff there getting away with in the other sets such as the ark and the pilot I don’t see why this one set specifically would be cancelled
They're just movies. People really need to get over themselves.
OK so people have been emailing and texting Customer service out the wazoo And they have been responding quickly Saying the set is not canceled they would have known about it But it is coming out later this year Due to a structural issue
This video doesn't answer the question.
They did, they said it was to "consolidate the launch"
@@Ashnflash That would mean they possibly delayed the set to make the set more stable, from what consolidate means.
No one has said it’s been cancelled. LEGO have simply said it’s NOT a part of the launch…
Either that or Mola Ram gave all the lego creators chest pains.
It also just occurred to me - that Temple of Doom set also features lots of Burgundy and Reddish Brown bricks - AKA Brittle Brown. It could be that they need to change some color palettes because of how fragile the bricks alone might be.
That issue with those colors have actually been fixed for a few years now. I also don’t see here anything out of the ordinary for builds. But that was a good theory!
Honestly I always thought the ToD set looked like a terrible build. Wouldn't be surprising if they had to change things.
You know what was violent? Satipos death, which they let you reenact in the diorama set. Kind of shocking
In that's set's defence, it is 18+ 🤷♂️
But you're 100% right
I feel like they could get away with the plane chase, by saying it's a bad guy pilot......however it's still kind of messed up for it to have a plane that breaks apart and has the implied death for the pilot. I'm not sure why they went with a set with a mono wing fighter while canceling the Osprey plane set. I'm not sure what their thought process is.
So Lego is just burning money? I know it’s just one set, but come on! People want this!!! Lego, stop chickening out and do something challenging!
We need this set to release, it would make no sense to completely skip out on making any Temple of Doom sets.
This is the only movie we get Indy showing off his chest, Harrison Ford was a Daddy back then in the 80s👀👀
Strange, that they decided to keep the very same hat for Dr.Henry Jones. It's recoloured helmet, but in the movie he wore a different hat. Somehow they decided not to recreate it as a new piece.
my hope is that if lego is cancelling stuff they would KNOW that theyre disappointing us and making us lose trust in their brand. plus why would they make an entire box art design if they would only use it for two sets.
I have the original Lego Indiana jones figure, and even short round. They’re in decent condition, except Indianas packs strap is busted. Other than that it’s pretty good. I have a couple of Indians jones figures, but the one that I mentioned is the only one that is in one piece. Those were some good times. 😊😀👍
It's the one set I really wanted, I loved the original. Seriously hoping it's only delayed and not cancelled
Honestly, they should just release a couple of indiana jones minifigure series and release those in this cancelled set instead
I would love to see a Resident Evil Lego, and I'm sure many many many people would agree with me. 😀
Yes!!!
