I really appreciate this video, I live in California & am doing research to find a building method that will be a good option for me after losing my home to a wildfire. This was really helpful, thanks!
So sorry Dr. Juko for the tragedy. I'm also doing research on various building technologies and sharing what I learn on this channel. I'm glad the video was of help to you.
For outer was plastering, cladding solves that problem on ground floor walls and wallmaster on top floor walls. In my view , EPS savings come in the form of savings from pilferage by fundis, stones are an easy target for that, you only have cement and sand to watch over. They also give you savings in terms of time, which is money. For a commercial building, which means earlier occupancy and consequently faster realization of ROI.

Exactly Brian. EPS isn't meant as a replacement to proper building design and construction. The building procedures must be followed to ensure safe structures. Thanks for your remarks!
@@PropertyNoma Pluss: Don't get me wrong: The video is great as a introduction to the system. But in order to be up to standards in USA, there are actually 2 standards. Thank you for sharing. How much would it cost to build a simple 3 bedroom bungalow? How durable is it? Is it easy for robbers or natural disasters to destroy it?
Hello. Can I use PES for roof deck slab? Can it carry water tank if reinforced with steel underneath the area that will carry additional weight? Thank you!
What if while you are assembling the panel and before you shotcrete it rains and the steal matting gets rust, would it affect the panel's integrity in bearing load/strength ?
Hi Hamir, it's best to choose an EPS panel that has galvanized steel mesh. Galvanization adds a layer of zinc that reduces the rate of rusting of steel. Most EPS companies use galvanized steel for the mesh but it's always better to confirm first. If the steel mesh rusts during installation, then it can impact the structural integrity of the structure. Storing the panels in a dry area is a good preventive measure.
That is the reason for Galvanized wire mesh or "special order" stainless steel/ There are also solutions which you spray which instantly dissolve the rust before concrete application.
Can you speak to the functionality of EPS floor panels for house that is being raised off the ground on pilings? Can you use the EPS floor panels for the main floor if it is off the ground? Thanks for making this video. I learned a lot.
You will need to create a troff/ tray from your existing floor or create one on the top of the pilons. then you pour 3 to 4 inch of shot-create (3 sacks sand 1 sack of Portland cement). Immediately float a 3d-eps panel and vibrate it until the wires sunk and the eps float on top of cement. Install your 17 inch rebar on the ends for connection of walls also for the interior walls. From that point , regular 3d-EPS construction. Pour 4 inch of the same combination sand and cement, Make sure the pillions are design to support the weight,
I've seen example where the regular wall panels were used on a roof slab and placed on a metal beam system, you can add a 7 cm concrete layer for more safety if needed. But I haven't tried it yet
Av a few questions, can one build a 5 storey residential building with the EPS panels only without concrete pillars of steel bars, like upper floor slabs entirely built with EPS panels, and how easy is it to cut out a door or drill holes on the wall later on in future if one needs to do some modifications like add an extra window
From the research I've done, you can do a 4-storey building with EPS panels. But you can go higher if you include beams and pillars. The structural engineer can advise you on your project. Modifications can be done in future using concrete drilling and cutting machines. It's not easy to cut through concrete but it is possible.
@@PropertyNoma I've contacted several manufacturers in this field and they said the EPS is not load bearing so you can't use it to hold slab or multi stories!! I don't know how stable you building will be in your case

More reinforcement bars and higher strength concrete can be added to the panels to add more structural strength. The panels can be designed to suit specific climate conditions. A structural engineer will provide you with a suitable design depending on where you live.
Heavy reliance on concrete to achieve strength (expensive). EPS panels can cost more after plastering when compared to conventional materials. Requires a contractor who specializes in EPS panels (difficult to find, more expensive). EPS panels may not be available in your area. These are some of the disadvantages I can think of.
This is usually determined during the design stage of construction. Roofs mostly carry live loads, e.g rain or wind with a factor of safety included. Once the loads are determined, the thickness of concrete plaster can be determined for the EPS panels.

Hi Oluoch, when I was doing my research, I found out that it would cost Ksh 400-600,000 for a 3 bedroom house. So for a one bedroom house, it's much lower than that estimate. For accurate quotations, please contact the EPS manufacturers. Links are in the description.
