Things like this make me appreciate the internet. This is not something you'd EVER get to see on TV. Just a straight forward & entertaining conversation of someone sharing a comic book with their friends. Fucking awesome.
Resurrecting this comment Bc I've rewatched Back Issues three to four times each, but flip through tv channels endlessly before deciding that nothing is on.
25:25 "It's almost like he's in a dream." Spot on. Grant Morrison said it's pretty much a canon story in a sense that Bruce would legitimately have this dream.
Joker MadHatter and scarecrow ofcourse, gave him illusinegen drugs,so batman is actually dreaming a hell of a bad trip in the Asylum.. That's why he asked help in the end.. Cuz he's still tripping even when he leaves the Asylum when Joker🃏 tells him that he'll always have a place in there.. LSD.. That's what i received from the book.!!
"And then she killed him Alfred!" "And you read her the riot act?" "That's the crazy part Alfred, I DIDN'T!!!!!!!" "Hmmm, you know, up until this point this has been a more realistic dream than the other ones."
Grant Morrison also confirmed this book all takes place in Batman's dream and is his subconscious working things out. It's a literal nightmare. Which is why the art is so hazy, hard to decipher, and changes shape, like in a real dream.
I honestly believe this story is a nightmare Batman has one night. Specifically, in my collection it goes immediately after Jason Todd is killed by Joker, which canonically happens right after Batgirl gets crippled by Joker.
I love how Joker crossdressing was too much but not Two-Face being so indecisive that he can't even use the bathroom, Clayface talking about "Spreading my disease" or the Mad Hater's infatuation with little blonde girls
Yeah, Mad Hatter makes me sick. I mean yeah he has Schizophrenia and is delusional but that doesn't give him any right whatsoever to kidnap and possibly sexually assault little girls. He's my least favourite Batman villian because of some of the things he has done or will ever do
My biggest problem with this graphic novel is I'm freaking color blind and everytime Joker spoke I legitimately had to spend 5 seconds deciphering each and every word. Eventually I had to look up a dramatized reading.
I have moderate Deuteranopia which means that i have trouble discerning specific colors, especially when placed directly next to what my spectrum considers similar. It is more commonly called Red-Green colorblindness and affects 5% of the male population.

8:42 Actually, the guy was an inmate at Arkham Asylum before killing Amadeus' family. The narrator mentions getting a patient nicknamed "Mad Dog", and there's a whole scene where Arkham examines the guy and asks him questions.
Incorrect. Mad Dog is at Metropolis penitentiary where Armadeus interviews him. The Arkham house doesn't become an asylum until AFTER his family is murdered. His downfall is that he doesn't take the threat of these mentally deranged people seriously as he is only fascinated by their mental illness. He blows off the warning call about Mad Dog escaping so he loses his family and sanity as a consequence.
You didn't mention the Tarot theme throughout the book. This is crammed full of Tarot imagery, specifically Aleister Crowley's "Thoth" deck. The instant Batman enters Arkham, the "Hanged Man" is the first thing we see. I also love how Harvey Dent says at the end, " Who cares for you? You're nothing but a pack of cards.". A reference to Alice in Wonderland when Alice grows big and throws the Red Queen's army about. He throws the Tarot, for it is now nothing but a deck of cards.
It's partly based on a Edgar Allan Poe comedy about an asylum called "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether" with the inmates running the place
I wish you went more in depth about the villains. Clayface, Mad Hatter, Croc, Zeus, Scarecrow and so forth. You didn't mention the narrative about Croc being "the dragon" or Zeus being lonely because he can't leave the room. Any of that stuff.

The game actually reveals a bit more about Mad Dog-how Arkham actually did try to help him after the murders and nearly ended up successfully rehabilitating him, then Mad Dog ended up having a severe relapse on the day he was about to be released and murdered Arkham’s secretary, and that’s when Arkham decided he was incurable and needed to die.
I found this book in my dad's comic collection when I was maybe 14. Had no idea what it or grant morrison was, but the art looked different so I took it to read. I think it broke my brain and influenced everything else I was into for the rest of my life. it was rad.

You guys just covered the first two comics I ever bought (DC vs Marvel and Arkham Asylum) back to back on Back Issues! Awesome work. I was raised on horror movies, so I loved Arkham as a kid, and it got me into reading Batman books. But alas, I'm still waiting for a really good Riddler story.
The final villain scene from The Crow was the first thing I thought of too when Sal said "lands on a gargoyle..." I imagine you're on time crunch to post these, but the editing to add photos of the actual pages being discussed are nice. I would appreciate more of these when you have discussions about the art, like when talking about the daughter's head in the house or "curls" on Batman.
First two Bat-books I read were DKR and Arkham Asylum and I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THIS! I didn't know half the character in the first place, so I had NO CLUE who these alternate versions were and I was so used to standard grid panel layouts that this stream-of-consciousness style completely threw me for a loop. There should be a disclaimer on this book. WARNING. DO NOT READ UNLESS HIGHLY KNOWLEGEABLE OF BAT-MYTHOS, MORRISON STORY STYLE, AND EUROPEAN HORROR ART.
OMG! Thanks for reading this story guys. I grew up with A Serious House On Serious Earth and it holds a special place for me. It's CERTAINLY not for everyone of course, and the art and writing prove it. Even I didn't like it the first time I read it. However... As time went on I was slowly to slowly see it from another angle and enjoy it, until I finally flat out loved it. It took a different approach, it was quite risky, and I loved the way it turned out. It's seriously one of the more bizarre Batman stories I've read (And that's saying a lot) but I think the risks it takes are well worth it and it breathes an almost new and abstract vision into Batman's Universe. Really enjoyed this one guys. Thank You. And keep up the good work.

Definitely was not expecting that intense imagery. I'm going to give it another read in the foreseeable future but I'll make sure to get a copy with the additional script at the end because while this video filled In a few gaps like the Zeus wannabe (never heard of before) & Mad Hatter, I'm sure Grant Morrisons commentary & visually removed script will provide further clarity. And I just want to experience this insanity again. Apparently clay face was in this, so I'll be looking out for him. Fun video as always!

Hey guys, I know this is considered to be a long and complicated book, especially in comparison to most comics though but... Have you ever read Alan Moore's From Hell? I feel that would make an interesting, strange, yet unique episode.
This is my favorite graphic novels of all time. It’s so dark and creepy and it’s just fantastic. It’s like I’m living in a fever dream. I feel that some things in this comic is actually happening but other things are not. So I don’t believe that Batman killed Croc. I think that it’s just in his mind.
The only thing of consequence is Killer Croc getting speared. Crock is resilient, a spear to the gut isn't necessarily a fatal wound. The book is in continuity, and is canon. Only the details are fuzzy.
Ylatch The only physical conflict Batman had was with Killer Croc, his cell was the only one open. Batman was dosed with Dr. Crane's fear toxin. All of the other inmates, besides Joker and his hostages, are locked up. After Batman left, Joker closed Dent's cell, which Batman and Joker entered, and went back to bed. A very fine April Fool's Day indeed.
I remember when I was really young, we're talkin like 9-12 sort of age and I first ever looked at this book and I wrote it off as crap because I didn't the art style in it, then reading it properly when I got a bit older I think round 17 and really liking it
*Mentions Insomnia* Its a remake of a foreign film of the same name by WB studios to test out an up-and-coming director if he can work within the Hollywood studio system. It stars Al Pacino, Hilary Swank, and Robin Williams; about an LAPD homicide detective trying to solve a murder in a town in Alaska where the sun doesn't set. It's a great film. Oh, and the up-and-coming director was Christopher Nolan, after Memento, and it was his film before Batman Begins.
About that condition where Two Face has problems deciding, there is actually a real condition that does that, or something like that, where one has lots of problems picking between even basic options
Movie(s) pitch. DC continues making Batman villain origin stories where they all end up in Arkham asylum, then theres some sort of story where Batman has to go into Arkham to stop whatever’s happening. We get that action story along with the origins of Arkham asylum, similar to this comic. It would be a lot less trippy then the artwork and style of the comic though.
@@carlkligerman1981 hell no! That entire city should have been left to sink in the ocean A LONG time ago. But if you're qualified to work in an insane asylum than you have better options than working at arkham. Like moving out of Gotham. So long as you don't move to Bludhaven or Hub City, anywhere would be an improvement.
'Shocking people' or Electroconvulsive therapy is the safest treatment for severe mental illness out there. Sadly, this to be honest the greatest Batman story ever written compounded that Hollywood pushed misconception abt ECT. Granted it was barbaric early on but when it was published, it was established as a very safe medical treatment. As a doctor and still a huge Morrison fan, it conflicts me when I read it. PS: Love your content guys...amazing
So I think this was a great episode but I have one big question that hasnt been answered: Did batman just leave Arkham without reestablishing order? Cause that's what it sound like
What if the reason why the art is so crazy is because before going into arkham Batman dropped some ACID just for the hell of it? XD love your videos guys
I see it as Bruce Wayne having a nightmare. Lots of people see it trying to be a true Batman tale when in reality it's more akin to Bruce Wayne in a Batman costume. Which is interesting in its own right. Even Mad Hatter states it's not really happening. Which coincidently is the plot of a Batman The Animated Series episode. It also makes it as memorable as Jokers "multiple choice past" from The Killing Joke. It's simply saying not to take it as in canon but to see it as an interesting idea. Batman scared? What would that look like? Look no further.

Ylatch People keep forgetting that Joker has no intention of ever killing Batman. He doesn't want the fun to stop.
I remember when I was really young, we're talkin like 9-12 sort of age and I first ever looked at this book and I wrote it off as crap because I didn't the art style in it, then reading it properly when I got a bit older I think round 17 and really liking it
Did sal ever get that riddler trophy
Poor Harvey.
And the Joker isn't all wrong . . .
Great episode. One of my favorite books in the weird/horror genre.
I thought that Two Face let him go because it was April 1st and so he went against the coin for reasons
Finally, a book I own. I have the original, so I didn't get the extra script. Now I have to buy a new copy. Thanks ComicPOP!
@5:00 "umm... DarkinghtMetal though"
*walks out like a boss*
Grant Morrison's dry run to see how crazy a Batman story they could do.
so arkham asylum a mad house on a mad earth
I love this, new sub!
*Mentions Insomnia*
Its a remake of a foreign film of the same name by WB studios to test out an up-and-coming director if he can work within the Hollywood studio system.
Back issues is back this week!
Ha get it?
john kalek GET OUT
About that condition where Two Face has problems deciding, there is actually a real condition that does that, or something like that, where one has lots of problems picking between even basic options
Dude, holy shit, after I read this book I have nightmares about the Joker. So freakin scary.
This is my favorite Back Issues hands down.
This was my jam!!
Fright night came out in 85 .
The pay & benefits for working at Arkham must be outrageously high, otherwise, why would anyone work there?
Because Gotham is such a happy little town where the little folk enjoy a fair go, right?
@@carlkligerman1981 hell no! That entire city should have been left to sink in the ocean A LONG time ago. But if you're qualified to work in an insane asylum than you have better options than working at arkham. Like moving out of Gotham. So long as you don't move to Bludhaven or Hub City, anywhere would be an improvement.
@@caitlinbrewer4843 metropolis perhaps?
Ok, does Arkham Asylum have bad security or something?
Like everytime the villians create a breakout, a riot or a overrun at that place.
This book was so trippy that I didn't know how to read it at first.
Cause that's what it sound like
Pretty much.
Brandon Martinelli *obligatory guitar riff*
John bradley He barely got out. Harvey took pity on him. Harvey himself was having a moment.
John bradley Are we also gonna overlook the fact that Batman totally "stunned" Croc?
Just Some Guy with a Mustache He was totally THUCK'ed!
27:27 madness, as you know, is like gravity, all it takes is a little push ( I'm sorry, I just couldn't help it)
Nice Fright Night reference. Fright Night was in 1985.
This was one of the first comic books I ever read. It was weird as balls, and gave eleven year old me a nightmare or two.
i skinned my parents like potatoes once
Wouldn't it be twice?
+Certninja11 well he skinned his parents once, he didnt skin his parent twice. wait ...
What if the reason why the art is so crazy is because before going into arkham Batman dropped some ACID just for the hell of it? XD love your videos guys
Quick Sal! The sequel is on the horizon!
62 episodes of Back Issues.... Challenge Accepted!
I've read that this book was the reason Christian Bale wanted to play Batman/Bruce Wayne
"Arkham, the Man" conning to a theater near you.
Will you ever do The Killing Joke?
Ričardas Mikelionis I don’t think they ever will.
@@pizzapiinthesky ok.

Franklin Jones I know! I was joking!
Luke SkyWalkaa the real joke is how we are replying to a 5 year old comment
Hey you guys should do a bidaily vlog or something because that would be great to see.
Great video on a great book
You guys got really metaphysical at one part and you could see that you were trying to dial it back lol.
I think jokers killing joke orgin is real. I know many disagree but I actually trust him
@@RustyBrickStudios That definitely is a way to interpret it.
Did anyone else feel like Sal was wearing a faded Wu-Tang shirt at first?
