I've actually stopped hillwalking now. For years it was my aid to keep depression at bay but recently I've gotten scunnered with it. Putting my body through all that effort to suffer later through the week with hip or knee problems it became something that wasn't worth while. But I will continue to enjoy youtube content and some flatter, easier walking in Scotland.

Your loved ones will understand (sometimes not immediately, but later!) when you need to take yourself off up a hill or two, to stave off the negativities of everyday life. You say you're addicted to the hills, well at least your addiction is fuelling your good health and well being, and not scuppering it as so many other addictions do. Look after yourself Murray and keep doing what you need to, to get the most out of life, and remember we're all here with you.

Another stunning video Murray, great visuals and fascinating commentary. My commenting tends to be a bit random, so I can't remember how much of this I've mentioned before. But I certainly recognise the issues you raise, and more. My first wife and I were just starting to explore the Highlands when she died suddenly and totally unexpectedly in 1986. The only thing that stopped my life falling apart completely after that were trips to the mountains, and for the next 10 years or so I took the long drive up from Lincolnshire several times a year. I found myself quickly addicted to Munro bagging, which I now recognise as negative in many ways. I certainly slogged up too many boring hills in lousy weather just to tick them off the list, and missed out on countless far more interesting lower hills. Those solo trips were fantastic on the whole though, and some were unforgettable, but I did cause some anxiety for my elderly parents by doing what they considered such a risky activity. I didn't see it their way of course, mainly because I knew how fit I was and I was developing pretty good mountain skills along the way. In fact I often had to point out that the long drives were far more dangerous than the hills, even solo in winter. Then I met someone else and started to introduce her to Scottish mountains, which stopped the mindless peak bagging, and made me far more selective about trips. In recent years I've also started taking my twins up there, and seen them falling in love with the whole craziness of long drives and big mountains. But, and it is a big but, I've now gone and got old and knackered! I always joked that I ran 30 miles and more a week to stay fit enough to get my kids up big mountains, and expected getting old to be a slow steady process, but it wasn't. My health went quickly down hill after decades of never being ill, with blood clots on my lungs, Covid pneumonia and a series of mini strokes over a relatively short period, and suddenly on bad days I couldn't walk across the room, let alone climb a big hill. Luckily things continue to improve slowly, and I have managed some mountains again with the kids, but I'm really selective now. I don't feel like mountains are an addiction anymore, health, distance and money being tight, mean that trips north are less often and more selective, and often built around when the kids are free, as they are both now adults with their own lives. But I also have to mention how your channel and videos were a huge help to me through the really dark times, when the next mountain felt like it might never ever happen, so a big thank-you for that :)

Sometimes you need to take a step back and get your mind in a better place.These videos and treks can take there toll on you as although scenery is stunning you need to concentrate all the time whilst doing these walks and can really only relax once you reach your destination. That’s so ironic you had this video this week Murray. I came and camped up there last Wednesday, the night of the big blue moon and was feeling guilty as I drove up due to skipping some work but as you say the hills where calling me. The head space was much needed too.

Finally done Stob Dearg for the first time last Friday. Surprised by how quick you can climb it from the road. Must admit the views at the top were better than expected. I’m a bit like yourself with the early starts. By the time I got back to the car all the spaces were taken. Highlight of the trip was watching people driving in and out of that terrible car park. Amazing as always Murray. Just came back from a holiday on the coast and my next target is Ben Dubhcraig and Ben Oss Friday next week. Hopefully the predicted forecast isn't too wet for the ascent as I know it can be notoriously boggy. ATB mate

This is another really good, and I think important video. Thank you Murray. I left my family from Friday to Sunday there to climb East Buttress on Beinn Eighe Triple Buttress- a bucketlist big boots climb. A sensational Scottish classic and an absolute belter of a route. I feel guilty having these incredible experiences without my wife and daughter there sharing them with me. Who knows, maybe it's for the best this way. My daughter is 13 and she climbs indoors plus has done some munros, so there's hope for her. But my wife really doesn't enjoy this sort of stuff. And she often suggests I sort out good life insurance before my next trip. Broad Buttress is a relatively hard route I reckon, with more to it than other grade 2 scrambles. The final portion of the buttress proper is absolutely fantastic - perfect scrambling terrain in a perfect position. Hope the wedding went well and all is now well on the homestead.
Thanks Dizzy - glad I’m not the only one who gets these feelings when compelled to head out - sometimes it’s portrayed as all sunshine and roses when in reality it isn’t (same with everything TBh ) - sounds like you had a great climb though ! I was wild camping on Beinn Eighe a few weeks back and headed over to the top of the triple buttress and looked at some of the routes - think I’ll returns (fancy a traverse of Beinn Eighe too 👍 Thanks for watching ATB Murray

The climbing on the triple buttress was excellent; quite sustained and exposed climbing yet still reasonable in B1 boots - it would certainly make a great day out for you and Gerry if you haven't already done it. Empathise with what you said about feeling guilty. I can feel the same. I also think many hill goers (including myself) are addicted to it. After a week without going out there are cravings. But balance is everything in life- hills without family and friends is also a dull existence. Have enjoyed your vids for some time! Cheers

A route up Stob Dearg that I might actually manage (apart from the main walking route up of course). That view from beinn a chrulaiste is one of my favourite of Glencoe. Hope you enjoyed the wedding!
It’s a grand scramble (at a relatively easier grade but that all depends on the ck duties as you know). Nothing beats that view from Chrulaiste! Got a wild camp video from there coming soon :) stay tuned Speak soon M

Go easy on yourself Murray, life is one big guilt trip! Glad you went out and felt better for it. I managed to do the big buachaill a few weeks ago with my pal (very much via the tourist path 😂) and was so proud of myself. When I first looked up at that mountain a few years ago I couldn't have dreamed I could ever stand atop her but thanks to inspirational people like you it was almost a dawdle 😅😂

I love the way you think about weather, routes, options and time as you're on the cliff Solo scrambling is rewarding but serious; its pleasures and risks should always be considered and judged on the day - just as you do
It’s understandable to feel guilty about going walking, however the way I look at it if it makes you happy and helps with your mental health your wife and son will understand. My girlfriends good and always tells me to go walks probably just to get peace but I also takes her son so it benefits everyone.
Gerry has a book, please tell. You will start to look like a scotch egg . Thats some dedication, got a wedding and you still leg it and get a hill, scramble and film, phew.

That’s so ironic you had this video this week Murray. I came and camped up there last Wednesday, the night of the big blue moon and was feeling guilty as I drove up due to skipping some work but as you say the hills where calling me. The head space was much needed too.
The moon rises have been pretty spectacular- hope you had fun 👍👍

Finally done Stob Dearg for the first time last Friday. Surprised by how quick you can climb it from the road. Must admit the views at the top were better than expected. I’m a bit like yourself with the early starts. By the time I got back to the car all the spaces were taken. Highlight of the trip was watching people driving in and out of that terrible car park. Some of those pot holes scare me.

Amazing as always Murray. Just came back from a holiday on the coast and my next target is Ben Dubhcraig and Ben Oss Friday next week. Hopefully the predicted forecast isn't too wet for the ascent as I know it can be notoriously boggy. ATB mate

I left my family from Friday to Sunday there to climb East Buttress on Beinn Eighe Triple Buttress- a bucketlist big boots climb. A sensational Scottish classic and an absolute belter of a route.
I feel guilty having these incredible experiences without my wife and daughter there sharing them with me.
Who knows, maybe it's for the best this way.
My daughter is 13 and she climbs indoors plus has done some munros, so there's hope for her. But my wife really doesn't enjoy this sort of stuff.
And she often suggests I sort out good life insurance before my next trip.
Broad Buttress is a relatively hard route I reckon, with more to it than other grade 2 scrambles. The final portion of the buttress proper is absolutely fantastic - perfect scrambling terrain in a perfect position.
Hope the wedding went well and all is now well on the homestead.
Thanks Dizzy - glad I’m not the only one who gets these feelings when compelled to head out - sometimes it’s portrayed as all sunshine and roses when in reality it isn’t (same with everything TBh ) - sounds like you had a great climb though ! I was wild camping on Beinn Eighe a few weeks back and headed over to the top of the triple buttress and looked at some of the routes - think I’ll returns (fancy a traverse of Beinn Eighe too 👍

Cheers Murray - must be loads of folk out there on the hills suffering this way. Finding the balance is an ever moving set of goal posts unfortunately.
The climbing on the triple buttress was excellent; quite sustained and exposed climbing yet still reasonable in B1 boots - it would certainly make a great day out for you and Gerry if you haven't already done it.
I took my old gopro to edit a little video of the climb - I'll let you know when it's uploaded.

Beinn a chrulaste has an excellent and easy scramble on the way to the summit. It's called Pink Rib Grade 1 and is visible from the road.
It’s a cracking walk - look up Beinn a Chrulaiste on Walkhighlands webpage and you will get all the info you need 🙏👍👍👍

Empathise with what you said about feeling guilty. I can feel the same. I also think many hill goers (including myself) are addicted to it. After a week without going out there are cravings. But balance is everything in life- hills without family and friends is also a dull existence. Have enjoyed your vids for some time! Cheers

A route up Stob Dearg that I might actually manage (apart from the main walking route up of course). That view from beinn a chrulaiste is one of my favourite of Glencoe. Hope you enjoyed the wedding!
It’s a grand scramble (at a relatively easier grade but that all depends on the ck duties as you know). Nothing beats that view from Chrulaiste! Got a wild camp video from there coming soon :) stay tuned

Go easy on yourself Murray, life is one big guilt trip! Glad you went out and felt better for it. I managed to do the big buachaill a few weeks ago with my pal (very much via the tourist path 😂) and was so proud of myself. When I first looked up at that mountain a few years ago I couldn't have dreamed I could ever stand atop her but thanks to inspirational people like you it was almost a dawdle 😅😂

It’s understandable to feel guilty about going walking, however the way I look at it if it makes you happy and helps with your mental health your wife and son will understand.
My girlfriends good and always tells me to go walks probably just to get peace but I also takes her son so it benefits everyone.
