I played the arcade and 2600 versions of this. It was a lot of fun back in the day. I suspect it hasn't aged well.
I didn't keep score when I got Basketball for the 2600, but after I got the Atari logbook in June 1982, I know I've never beaten the computer by more than 6. Winning by 8 is the Wizard challenge, and it's really hard because the computer plays fiercer the more it's behind.
What hasn't aged well is the Odyssey² which I think he's reviewed their games this past year. It was launched in 1978, and their Football! and Baseball! games beat Atari's until new versions like RealSports line by Atari and Super Challenge line by M Network appeared in 1982, but their Bowling! Basketball! cartridge was inferior to both of Atari's separate carts.
It's always cool to see an 8bit version of a game you know for other places
I learned about this game in the last couple years. It's interesting that you can play up to 4 players, and on the same side! Almost no sports video games let you do co-op for some reason. It's too bad you can't pass; there's a limit to what you can do with a one-button joystick. Too bad they didn't realize that in the 1970s before the 8-bit computers came out.
The computer does indeed play better when it falls behind, at least in the original 2600 version, where this is also mentioned in the manual. The manual for the 8-bit version makes no mention of this, but I suspect it's still true there.
I used to shoot from under my own basket. The ball would go off the top of the screen, bounce and then land in the hoop!
This reminds me that I still need a copy of Basketball for the Atari 2600. I had it as a kid and miss it. 2600 is the only system I enjoy playing sports games on because they are so simple & fun
Ice Hockey was the greatest!
Good video! and review of this game! I remember this game! It is a bit better then the Atari 2600 game system! I liked it!
All kidding aside this looks pretty darn good for 1979.
Do you have a Fujinet for your XL yet? They are SO much fun. I know you love collecting cartridges, but it is pretty amazing to have almost every game made for the 8-bit computers at your fingertips. I enjoy reading the daily news on my XEGS. There’s just something so satisfying about navigating the headlines with a Sega Genesis control pad. Who would have thought?
I have one but I don't really use it anymore. SUBcart and AVGcart is the way to go. WIth the relative cables included you can play ALL the modern games and enjoy 1MB/512k memory expansion, Stereo Sound upgrade, RTC, Full ATR compatibility and multimedia capabilities (Video and Music playback.)
@@nickolasgaspar9660 That does sound fantastic!! I've been looking for ways to expand the memory on my XEGS, and I was wondering what the best options are. I discovered that some of the cartridge games originally made for the XEGS won't actually run on the XEGS as disk images because they have to be loaded into memory, and then there isn't enough memory left to run the game. My understanding is that when you're playing a game on cart, the ROM chip effectively expands the RAM of your machine. Is this correct? One thing that I like about the Fujinet is its capability of creating and storing disk images. I'm learning Atari Basic, and I like to be able to save my programs.
@@markstahl1464Unfortunately, most of the extra features of the SUBAVGCart, including the RAM expansion, won't work with the XEGS since they require either ECI (on XE models) or PBI (on the XL models) connection, which the XEGS lacks.
@@PG-gs5vb Good to know. Hey, at least I've got pastel buttons!!!
Hello, please play the ATARI 2600 version, I never managed to beat it!! and that's why I tried!! Anyway, at that time from the Atari 5200 to the 7800, in my opinion they only managed to improve some details of the classic 2600 inspired by the Arcades, am I nostalgic? but I always stick with its 2600 versions, sounds, colors, gameplay, it was a great, unprecedented revolution that currently amuses me a lot!! Greetings
I Like😀
Is that the first four player game
Too bad you can't do a wind mill slam or 3pt shot😂. Kidding of course. Played this game against my brother a lot as a kid.
That was a realy bad game even if me and my brothers played for hours. We were lucky to have One on One as an alternative basketball game.
