  • The Met Cloisters closed for six months due to COVID-19, but reopened to the public on September 12, 2020. For those who can’t make it to New York, this short film provides an opportunity to take a closer look at the Museum’s seven beloved "Unicorn Tapestries." Produced for the 1974 exhibition “Masterpieces of Tapestry,” it recounts the tale depicted in the works and explains the symbolic meaning of these mythic creatures, including their purifying and restorative powers.
As part of The Met’s 150th anniversary in 2020, each month we will release three to four films from the Museum’s extensive moving-image archive, which comprises over 1,500 films, both made and collected by the Museum, from the 1920s onward. This includes rarely seen artist profiles and documentaries, as well as process films about art-making techniques and behind-the-scenes footage of the Museum.

So very interesting. From the first minute to the last. The amount of work that went into these objects takes my breath away. These tapestries and wall hangings would only have been enjoyed by the elite in those days. Does anyone have an idea of when these beautiful things might have been made. 1460s? Earlier? Later? How astonishing that these items have been carefully preserved through centuries for us to marvel at.

it did hint that the unicorn horn is for cures. that and in mythology the unicorn represents healing. or was it good health or good luck but I know they said to have healing powers.

Meteorite's sound Actually there is a lesser known series from the Medieval Times where men hunting a few unicorns are impaled by the unicorns who are defending themselves from the hunters.

Meteorite's sound Not correct, the Male used his ‘horn’ for hunting, killing and for defense against Dragons, human hunters, and cultivating the earth. The female used it for domestic chores, and could produce beautiful, Flutelike Melody ! Also, it was a cosmetic feature, used to attract her ‘courting Stallion’ ! Not to Mention, the Magical Powers, that it Held. Much sought after, by Rulers of Nations, and also by Evil men, with a desire to attain inHumane Advantage!

Unicorn is the belief in one God (monotheism). hunting for the unicorn is a story about how the Egyptian priesthood had attempted to overcome Christianity (p s on the the damaged canvas are three girls: in red, in Blue and in white)

I get really annoyed when an act of violence against a thing of beauty and magic somehow becomes an act to symbolose Christianity. Christianity is the spear and the fence that both kills and imprisons magic. Christianity is the evil that has poisoned mankind and made the act of murder a holy thing. Christianity will die when men die. And the Unicorm will once again be free
