Kinetic tower, Procedural digital fabrication in Houdini

  • I've been experimenting with procedurally driven digital fabrication inside Houdini. While there are dedicated software options for this purpose like Grasshopper, I find Houdini great in terms of speed and customization. That being said, there are both advantages and disadvantages to this workflow. My objective here was to create a system aimed at 3D printing. The model will procedurally update its mechanical components, print bed layout, and tolerances to accommodate changes in height, eccentricity, diameter, printer bed size, and more. It will automatically generate piece numbers so the complete object can be assembled with minimal guidance.
    My first iteration is this kinetic sculpture where all its parts are 3D printable. I find the final result pretty cool!
