I’ll keep using my laptop, thanks. 😉 Although I usually typed quickly, over many yrs, recently I adopted Michael Rosen’s ‘unfolding’ method. He talked about it on BBC Radio 4 few months ago. (Nothing to do with Morning Pages.) Write a few words or a sentence or two, whatever’s on your mind. Pause. Wait for the next few words or sentences. Type those. Repeat. It’s v flexible. Enjoy your videos, Martin. Hope your job is going well 👍
I found, that if I have no time or just can't be bothered to write three pages, just three lines can do the job. Nice video, and lovely whiteboard animation! 😃👍
Others have mentioned alternative uses of threes too. I generally don't write them if I simply don't have time (got to get to work...), am particularly down, or I don't have the solitude I need. Thanks for the comment! 👍🙏
Great stuff, Martin. I've been writing on A5, but I petered off a couple of months ago. Watching this has made me remember how calm I felt in the mornings after writing. I now need to get back to it. Morning pages are excellent mindfulness. Thank you
I’ve been doing this for >20 years. For the past year I usually do the first page with my left hand. It’s great to accelerate getting in a trance like zone because of the intense focus it requires..
About writing by hand, and not using a device: the thoughts come faster than my hand can write them down. If I use pen and paper I forget a lot of my thoughts before I get a chance to write them down. Does anyone else struggle with this challenge? And if you do, how do you get past this issue? So I talk my thoughts out and the Notes app on my iPad converts my voice to text. This is the way I remove the bottleneck that exists between the forming of the thoughts and documenting it down on “paper”. I do this process of “writing “on a 12.9” iPad because it’s the same device I use when I do handwrite (iPad, Noteshelf 3, and the Apple Pencil) So I don’t use pen and paper anymore.
I prefer typing I write a few sentences. The piece takes it's own shape the thoughts are easier to come when I type. My subconscious is pretty good at coming forward after a para. Then I need to shape it and make it neat and flow and become beautiful. When I hand write I barely read it and it goes in the bin. Probably just me.
For me, 3 pages makes sense as it’s enough to push myself through any blocks, but not so much that it’s overwhelming. I also loooove writing it out by hand. It processes so much better than typing.
Absolutely. Do what's right for you. If it becomes a chore you won't want to do it. Look out for another video soon. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. 🙏
3 pages A5 works fine for me. I have my 3 pages done in the suggested time frame of half an hour. But if they start taking too long, I'm sure I'll end up quitting.. so 3x A5 is just right for me, I'll stick with it for now 😊
My morning pages are late mornings, morning health routine first . I share this, well because we can dampen and squash ourselves with rules. The sound and feel of the paper matters to me and my pencil or pen. The stylus should glide ,no scratching or pushing. Why 3 , for me it is vision of the thoughts, feeling words come through my hand and the calming sound inside My brain and heart . We are a composite of threes but three always has room for its neighbour's 4 and 5😅
three always has room for its neighbour's 4 and 5, indeed. And there's also room for multiples of three - 6, 9, 12... - or fractions of three - 1.5, 1! And you are right, we can dampen and squash ourselves with rules - so many people worry about doing this "wrong". I say do what's right for you...
I’ve been wanting to start this for awhile , so I’ll give it a go. One small point though, as a person in their 50’s , who routinely would toss coins in a fountain, I’ve never , ever tossed 3.
Hi Martin! I just found your channel and subscribed. Somehow morning pages came up in my YT feed just a couple of days ago. It's been more than 10 years since I read the artists way. I gave the MPs a try at the time but didn't persevere. I feel like giving it a go again and hope I can stick it out long enough to notice a difference. I listened to another YT creators experience of MPs. Towards the end there was a mention of prompts. I don't remember prompts mentioned in the book. Curious to know your take on those. While I know there's no wrong way to do it, using a prompt seems a bit too structured. Would that not hamper the stream of consciousness writing you're trying to tap into?
Hmm... a difficult one. To my mind prompts would be a way of steering the writing, which is not what morning pages are about. But prompts are perfectly valid for other times, just to explore or for reflection. I say give both a go. I'll look into making a video (or more) on prompts soon. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏
Hello Martin. Can you explain to me why you use B5 format and not A4 as Julia Cameron suggests. It's an important question for me. Thanks! Ím from Germany and my English is not perfect.
Great news, since the brain works in threes...three minutes seems about right...or maybe three words. Problem solved. At the moment I'm just doing one page answering some reflective questions + object writing to prompts. As they say - anything is better than nothing.
Got any insights on your own morning pages? Let me know! And if you appreciate this video, you can support my work with Superthanks, above ⬆🙏!

I've waned somewhat too, with the new job. Must make the effort to keep it up.
@@sketchley Well done. Trust all is going well with the new job

It is like a form of meditation; that's why such valuable stuff comes out.

I haven't written pages in months, I found it exhausting, going to give it another go starting tomorrow morning.
Begin again.
Take it easy. Start small. Let me know how you get on!

😁 great suggestions! And it sounds like you're doing the right things for you, and that's what's most important 🙏
