I think Dunphy was been very unfair to the Egyptians. Anybody who can remember that group would recall that Egypt should've actually beaten the Dutch and were very unlucky to lose to England (due to a poxy own goal). It was the tightest group in world cup history with 5 draws from the 6 games.
Group 1 from 1982 also had 5 draws from 6 games.
by the way the coach of the egyptian team who lead the team in this world cup died today
Oh the memories of Italia 90, what a great tournament is was for the Republic of Ireland and it seems like a life time ago now
good man eamo, altho england didn't do that much of a number of egypt, only 1-0 if i remember rightly, and the dutch could only scrape a 1-1 draw off them as well. so if anything he is harsher on egypt calling them rubbish, they deserved more respect

just because Egypt players mostly were from their domestic league, doesn't mean they were bad. Egypt was on world football stage long before Ireland even became independent country. they played were well against Holland, and not much poorer against England. if anything, Ireland stifled them with straightforward long-balling, so they didn't create anything in this game.

The funniest part of the Dunphy clip wasn't the pen throwing, it was the way he went "t'yah..." at the end
I legitimately thought that he was expressing himself colourfully in Gaelic.
Had a point I think.Had we played a bit more football we would have beaten them,certainly had the players at the time to do so.
In fairness, Dunphy got absolutely hosed by the Irish media of the day, spread it around the whole country that he said he was ashamed to be Irish. As this clip shows, he DIDN'T say that. Just go to show what power the media has over people, even before the age of social media.

In fairness to Jack Charlton, he had organised our team in such a way that we were able to press higher up the field and regain possession whereas in the euros this year we just sat back like sitting ducks, inviting quality teams to attack us which was more or less suicide.
He was damn fucking right! Long ball game against a poor team humping the ball down the channels all game giving possession back to Egypt who had players nobody ever heard of. This was the best bunch of players Ireland ever had as Eamonn so rightly said and we were a laughing stock after that game and shameful.Jacks tactics worked against tougher opposition but you just dont play that way against minnows of the World in the World cup itself. Enough said.
What people were/are forgetting was that Egypt were an excellent team. An excellent team.
They ran fucking rings around the Dutch, and lost only to a random header against England.
But of course, profound ignorance of the quality of the other team is what powers the armchair hyper criticism which has been growing in Ireland pretty much ever since this moment.
Dunphy is good for a laugh, but he mostly moans for attention.
I heard someone say before, if Mick had Jacks squad in 2002, we would have won. If Jack had Micks squad in 1990, we would have won! Nice thought, probably some truth in parts, I'd love to see Duffer with a mullet doing a cross field pass to Brady with a crew cut though. Ah if times were different and I could pause and reset!

Me too. It was a bit of let down tbh. I was hopping for him to be a bit more aggressive. And they said he flung the pen across the studio which he didnt, he just kind of rolled it in front of himself. Thaught the knocked Bill or John out with the pen the way people talked about it.
And the oddest thing of all is that an Englishman dared say he wouldn't talk to somebody who says he's not proud to be Irish!!!

FIFA changed the rules of returning the ball to the goal keeper because of this game , we were very abusive in returning the ball the hands of the goal keeper ....
Ireland is terrible NOW, but at that time we really had some very good players.
dunphy was getting assaulted i'd imagine for them to make that statement.
plus, Irish ones for most part are not THAT much more well known.about the only true stars from Ireland in those years were Brady and Stapleton, and i don't think the former even played at WC'94.

To be fair no-one should be proud of doing well that year. Strip away a few isolated incidents and the other 95% of Italia 90 was just shite all round. Every single team played negatively, even Germany and Cameroon. The lowest goals-per-game ratio of any World Cup. It was so bad they had to change the rules of the sport!

dunphy told the truth, that performance was a disgrace, packie bonners play acting in side his box for about 6 minutes was one of the reasons that fifa changed the backpassrule, jacks crude convictions about how football should be played not the talents he had at his disposal were the reasons for his tactics, great players like o leary mcgrath and john aldridge were wasted by jack.
Dunphy hasn't a clue. Egypt have a better tradition in football than ROI. Dunphy is completely ignorant of football beyond the UK.

Dunphy was dead right about that game in fairness, kicking the ball up in the air against a very poor team, never tried to play football at all that day, so im afraid Dunphy got it spot on
ireland is terrible as well, hes reacting like ireland is as strong as germany XD
