- Boss finally released a new toy for all the guitarists that have a GK style pickup installed. In order to play the synth, we have to install the pickup first... let's see how complex that is and how compatible it is with a variety of guitars...

Secret tip 1 - you can install the GK pickup the other way round, so the cable goes down towards the pots - and doesn't get in way of your right arm. There's Normal/Reverse setting in SY-1000 (and GR-55 and Boss GP-10) that allows you to do just that. Not many people know that. It's great if you palm-mute a lot.
Secret tip 2 - you can install a GK pickup on a 7-string guitar (the bottom B would go without the GK pickup). It opens up some interesting playing scenarios. I did that on my RGA7, of course, mounted cable down.

@@stefanhennig Yep! Heavy distorted bottom on B and cello on E and A in a powerchord :D Just careful with the installation. The top of the strings' curve on a 7-string is on the 4ths string (D). The top of the curve on a 6-string GK pickup is between 3rd and 4th (G-D). So to keep the 1mm distance, you have to be creative with the double sided tape on one of the GK pickup.
@@kitko33 This is super exciting to hear. Although I don't own the pickup or the SY1000 yet, I absolutely intended to buy them soon to use on my Jackson 8string, with the same idea you described- use the GK3 on the regular 6 strings and have my low B and F# unaffected.
I had a GK3 on a Strat. The cable, for my hand position, not only got in the way, it caused the cable to pull the cable loose. I have a new guitar and GK3 pickup. I will install it in the reverse method.

I have found that it's better to use an angled cable to connect the GK-3 to the guitar input. 'Straight' cables tend to be in the way when you're playing sitting down.
Is there enough room to fit this in a Floyd rose system?

i think synth tech should progress in the digital domain... you should not have to install seperate pickups...

Does anyone know how much impact have the condition of the strings on the sound of the synth? Until now I only used my GR55 at home without use of the guitar´s PU. So I didn´t care much about the string condition. They are at east five years on the guitar without causing any trouble to the sound of the synth, as far as I could recognized.. But things have changed. The GR55 now comes in action in a band. So I wonder are new strings essentially necessary? (Original PUs still won´t be used.)
Install goes a bit faster if no one interrupts by ringing the doorbell 👍🏽
Years ago I had a Roland GR33 synth and I attached the Gk pickup to an Ibanez RG the same way you did it work ok I just got rid of it because I wasn’t using it enough.

I have a $90 Indio Monoprice guitar that I will drill the holes in (they're really good guitars, BTW!) and that way I can keep my expensive guitars 'virgins".

Anyone else here who is also completely fed up with those pesky 13 pin DIN connectors losing contact? I have changed my cabling to VGA 15 pin connectors which are easier to come by. And of course, you can use those VGA cables you still have in the back of your drawers.
BTW: great video on the mounting options.
An idea for you - use some blue painters tape to mark where you want your stuff. Comes right off and no mess!

How does the GK3 behave during flod rose or tremolo operation? Does the GK3 node string distance change too much for the proper operation of the GK3?

Hey, this is a great series! A somewhat atypical question, but if I have a MIDI guitar with a USB output (and no GK pickup), do you think I could use a USB cable to send the MIDI notes to Boss SY-1000's USB input (in the resynth mode) and use it for my live gigging setup?

Is this GK3 pickup necessary to use the BOSS SY-1000? Can you still get nice synth tones minus this GK3 pickup, like the SY-1 pedal? I just purchased the SY-1000 (waiting to be shipped), but thought the SY-1000 did away with this type of specialty pickups????
Hi all. I installed my GK3 on my schecter diamond series guitar. Manage to get the guitar sound came out but no synthesizer sound at all. All unit is brand new. Need help...
Can you make the GK3 pickup up cable longer so you can put the bulky switch part on the back of your guitar?

@@joeking433 just to avoid the unpleasant look of having it on the front of the guitar. I gave up and put it on the front
@@MemphianSounds Yeah, it's easy to see that it would be really impractical to put it on the back where it would have a lot more chance of coming in contact with your body. I have a cheap guitar that I'm going to drill holes in. I had one before and I just used the adhesive strips but it's harder to get the pickup at the right distance to the strings that way.

I think it allows the notes to ring much clearer. Also, I don't know if the guitar is still plugged in to an amp through the GK3.
Every demonstration people just assume we know these things.

@EytschPi42 I am using a Japanese ESP-Alx ripped signature model. I am hesitant to buy this unit because I'm afraid the pickup won't fit due to the tremolo system and I am not sure I want to drill holes into the expensive guitar or damage the finish. Although, I really would like this unit.
When I have the 1600$ CDN to shell for the whole package, I will come back to that video on how to install it. It will be so hard to convince my wife, especially with everyone losing their jobs around us...

Henning, have you ever tried a Roland GR-20? I cant wait to hear you play synths with that pickup! :)
Put some black see through fabric on a frame and in front of your windows to soften the incoming light. Depending on how many layers you use, you get different grades of shadow (or different shades of grey 😉). There are also already professional solutions for that.
Are you going to show the Graphtech option ? I find the synth options very interesting but not willing to completely ruin the look of my guitar with this butt ugly GK3 thing / what are they thinking ?
Why can’t you get a strat knob or LP speed knob version with a small PCB that hides inside your guitar ?
Sorry, it seems obvious to me.
Most people will see the GK3 pickup as interesting looking or they just won't have an opinion one way or the other how it looks. Seems you're one of those rare type guys who are ultra-picky about things like that.

Different video in the series…. Look at the title of the video! It CLEARLY says Part 2/5…. So it would be nice if you take that into account!
It also doesn’t say „playing“, but „install“ in the title…. So please…. What is your issue?
