I appreciate this. My PhD isn't in theology and my first academic book definitely was referenced more than yours in what I'd think of as a smaller field. However your description of the politics in your academic field makes me appreciate the growth my field has seen in the last decade. It's far less toxic today in my field. Has there been similar growth in theology? Also, so right about adjunct work. It's fine as an evening job, but not a way to raise a family or be rooted in a community. I find it easier working in a middle school, for now, because I can get articles sent to me by friends in the field and keep a finger on the pulse of my field in a different way than can be done in the proverbial ivory tower. Because I do Philosophy Of that field it's likely similar in theology that is eminently doable outside of the academy.

Maybe the Church Fathers were wiser than we are in that they kept the Creeds to a bare minimum. They didn't even go into what we might consider critical doctrine about exactly how we're saved. While their reluctance to hash out all the details is frustrating, equally frustrating is when you realize that theological speculation NEVER ENDS and a lot of it can't be objectively proven. (Sorry, but a person's deep personal feelings or personal revelation isn't always "true.") Your opponent can have equally good reasoning and proof, especially when you view things from a different paradigm. Now, I DO think theological argumentation may have some value and some people are called to it, but remember C.S. Lewis' warning that Satan's most subtle temptation can be to tempt a person at the very steps of the altar. When anger, greed, and pride begin to overshadow love toward others, Satan is winning the battle.

@Dale Casselman I think if you're smart, you realize pretty quickly how little you know even about something that you're an expert on. Those who are slightly less intelligent suffer of the Dunning-Kruger effect, which is basically a life-long systemic self-delusion that you're way smarter and quick-witted than you really are. I know too many people who suffer of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Thank you that was immensely helpful. I am a constant reader and writer, but I'm in my late 50s and just finished a masters in theology. I'd love to do a PhD just for fun. I've been working in software for 30 years and will try to parlay that into a Christian publishing house or something
Thank you for another awesome video, Reverend Doctor Cooper. I love your videos and I used your book "The Great Divide: A Lutheran Evaluation of Reformed Theology" as a source in one of my upcoming history books on the Renaissance and the Reformation, so someday you'll be receiving a free book written by me. Whenever I use one of your books, articles, or UA-cam videos, I'll give credit, where credit is due, as I do with all of my sources, and I'll give you free books written by me. I agree with most of what you say in your videos, but I don't think, blogging before seminary is totally a bad thing, but I think, attitude is the key issue. A positive attitude and a willingness to admit, that "I don't know everything, but I'm eager to learn as much as possible," are extremely beneficial. Granted most of my published and forthcoming published works are Christian romance novels, mythology books, and history books. Granted I put Lutheran theology in all three of those genres of books, because my readers need, what we have as Confessional Lutherans. However, most of my readers are Lutherans, Catholics, and different types of Pagans. I know, that's a strange group of readers, but Lutheran books are hard to find, many Catholics say to me, "You're Lutheran? Well you're close enough," and Pagans struggle to find books written about Pagan gods and goddesses. As an author, I have discovered, that diversity is critically import to getting more readers. Getting back to my blog posts, I think, they're too controversial. Plus I lack the time and desire to fight with people, because being in sales has taught me to be positive all the time. I also don't let, what other people think about me and/or my books stop me or slow me down, because I know, I have loyal readers and I'm serving both the Holy Trinity and my loyal readers. I'm doing, what Yahweh, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit want me to do, I'm serving people, and I'm having fun, while I do it. Yeah Lutheran professors, lecturers, and teacher should probably only apply at Lutheran and Catholic universities and schools, because low church Protestants can be pretty hateful. I was slandered and refused employment at a "Christian" school in my hometown, but I'm actually happy, because I sub at two Catholic schools and I'm everyone's favorite substitute teacher, since I'm "the singing sub" and I write books. Plus that "Christian" school in my hometown is a literal den of demons.

Thank you for the video. I am wanting to finish up my BS and possibility moving on to MDiv and PHD in the future.
Starting my Th.D. this end of Aug/beginning of Sept. Can’t wait! I’m 37 and have been ministering for a while, but it’s exciting to finally earn my Th.D!
Im not even a theology student but boy do you sound like your talking about the architectural design profession. I enjoy your words, had a chuckle, and even learned something. You're well spoken and appreciated....keep the Lutheran ball rolling forward! God Bless All.
Thank you Doctor; can you do a video on research and reading strategies.? Reading at post grad level is so overwhelming and I wanted to know if you perhaps have some tips
Thanks for this Jordan. I really needed this. I'm pursuing a BA in Bible Studies and one of the things that really makes me feel so frustrated is all the mistakes I commit, arrogance, sin, division, cage stage, etc.
Definitely, I need to sit on the bench and warm up my arm on the bullpen. Maybe I'm not even ready for the bullpen LOL. Still. this has helped me a lot. I sent a friend request on FB. Thanks again.

Thank you. This video could be shared with multiple specialties and still be just as relevant.
Hey. I'm someone who's going to study Theology in the future and my question and problem is mostly related to no.5 and that is what jobs can I do with degrees in theology. I don't want to do pastoral ministry so what else options are there that gets money for survival? Someone please answer❤️
Good advice, sir. Appreciate to your generous.
Humbling video. I do wish i had seen this on my freshman year. Thanks for the useful tips.
Kierkegaard truly would have rocked ray-bans.
Wow, thanks for this. Ironically, this inspires me to give PhD -level study serious consideration as a mid-life project! The love of learning, writing, and teaching in not-necessarily-academic settings is very relatable.

Great advice Dr Cooper. Where did you get your PhD? Love just and sinner. Thank you
Thank you ❤️
Helpful. Thank you!
Thank you, I am humbled..Am just starting my masters now in New Testament Studies.
Thank you for making this video. What seminary did you go to?
The American Lutheran Theological Seminary.
Very useful insights!
Glad I got to see this video before I commit to a PhD in Theology. God bless!
I want to theology study in religious in the your good college, but my English language is not good, because I'm from back ward area. Sir
Thank you, Dr. Cooper.
This is a very deep video but great one, of a kind speaking to the truth
Because I wanna get all of my bachelor's Just saying I want to do medical I want to do theology philosophy and I don't even know if it got any degrees out there that have Hebrew Latin in Aramaic and Greek Learn those to
Please go on the TEN MINUTE BIBLE HOUR! Pastor William Weedon was on there and it was really good! No disrespect to him. We need a millennial Lutheran presence on that channel though
Well, you'll have to ask him about that.
I did. So you would be open to it?
Hello, have you read a bible commentary set through ?
The more I learn in my dual college degree studies the more I learn how much I don't know guys , im doing a dual degree doctorate in divinity and also theology ,the more I learn , the more I know how much I don't know ok ba in theology
Most people think they know everything when they go to college. It's madness
I know tons of people who get out of high school and are already sure they know absolutely everything.
Yes, every serious PhD out there feeling uncomfortable with other people knowing less than them since what we feel our knowledge is inadequate

Thank you for these words of wisdom. The first point is very important that our hearts may be guarded from pride, etc.
Also I kinda of knew about not everything is sunshine and rainbows in this field lol, not surprising we are dealing with HUMAN beings lol, and the funny thing is those that don’t bear fruit and think they are supreme and filled with pride, how do they study and know these things but still do it lol, modern day pharisees😂.
Thanks again for your wise words! May God bless you
