I need to watch more Illumination movies. I avoided them as a kid! And that's probably good. But Illumination Entertainment have continued to truck on with their TERRIBLE movies, and I haven't seen any of them. How basic can it? What unoriginal spin will they take? Why did this go viral? …Well. I dunno what I expected. This was pretty basic through and through. And it's a shame, cause there are some genuine moments I enjoy.. but the actual meat of the movie wasn't really needed. Illumination is the only animation studio I know where their films make a billion each but no one really talks about their films after watching them, unlike lesser successful films like The Iron Giant, which became a cult classic.

Because Illumination thinks kids only want mindless trash like this, while DreamWorks (except Turbo or Shrek the T***d), Pixar, and post-Spider-Verse Sony Animation have made more well-written and overall better films like Megamind, Kung Fu Panda, How To Train Your Dragon, Soul, Luca, The Mitchells vs. The Machines, and INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE!
Yeah, this movie is when Illumination started to get Super Predictable. Not Bad. Not Good. Not groundbreaking. Just Predictable.
A bad movie can at least be entertaining and have substance. There's nothing worse than a film that's just mid. Disney and Dreamworks have produced revolutionary, gorgeous, emotional and occasionally even thought provoking films, and even their worst films are far more interesting than what Illumination pumps out. I could tell you a lot more about Chicken Little and Boss Baby than I could Sing or the Grinch.
Not to mention the fact that they literally spoil the entirety of their movies in the trailers.

Say what you want, but...
1. Kevin Hart does a great job conveying Snowball's insanity
2. Whenever Tiberius spoke, I could not unhear Marlin from _Finding Nemo_

When I saw the film, I thought Tiberius was a much more interesting character than the main characters.
Looking back on this film, I ask myself, “Why wasn’t he the main character instead?” I mean, a hawk that just wants a friend but can’t seem to get one because of his predatory instincts? Now that’s something I wouldn’t mind seeing. It would have been better than this.

This movie bothers me for several reasons:
1. Most apartment managers are ok with you having small dogs, but a HUGE dog? No way. It's notoriously HARD to find an apartment if you have a big dog.
2. Never, never, ever just bring a strange dog into an existing home. If Katie had just taken Max to the shelter or where ever she got Duke from, to meet Duke first, she would have seen that they're not gonna get along.
3. MOST shelters/rescues won't even let you consider adopting a big dog like that if you live in an apartment.
4. Katie has TWO dogs and is gone most of the day! Yeah, she's got a dog walker, but that's only for an hour at most, seemingly once a day, does she just expect them to sit in the apartment the rest of the day?

5. I'm pretty sure one of the stray cats is a Sphynx; a breed that wouldn't survive very long out in the wild.
6. Does every human in the building just leave for the whole day? I can't see how nobody would notice a whole party full of animals going on.

I was thinking the same thing. I know more about cats, but from my experience in shelters the only ones that will let you adopt a dog into a very limited environment are ones that just completely don't give a shit at all about the dog. Even the most laid-back big dog breeds still need big spaces to properly live, if you can't occupy them most of the day. They definitely can't thrive off one-room apartments.
Listing this movies flaws:
-generic and repetitive stereotyping of different animals.
-literally a toy story ripoff.
-acts like dogs are just man's best friends and cats are just "funny animals for entertainment hahaha lol".
-"killer rabbit" trope.

Did Max really need eyebrows? Bolt did a fine job expressing himself without eyebrows, and that came out almost a decade before.
Then again, Bolt is a way better alternative to this film. Don't waste your time, just watch Bolt instead.

Fun fact from a bunny owner, that rabbit jumping into the water would likely have him dead! Their fur is so dense that if the water didnt take him, he would die of hypothermia. Also tbh rabbits are like Snowball. Full of hate.

Depends. I have a rabbit who was bred for his looks and not temperament (mini rex), and he only likes me (though will still run away from me sometimes because he is weird). Meanwhile, my brother has a rabbit that was bred for his size and temperament (american sable), and he is very calm.

So what you're saying is logically, SnowBall would of sacrificed himself to save Max and Duke. That's... not a bad idea I must admit. A heavy scene like that would of made for a fairly good villain redemption, and death at the same time.
It's amazing The Secret Life of Pets came out the same year as Zootopia, what's even more amazing is that Gidget, the Pomeranian is voiced by Jenny Slate, who voiced Dawn Bellwether, the sheep assistant mayor behind the night howlers plot, it's funny she played two fluffy white characters that year.
About as funny as Albert Brooks getting a voice over role with not just Pixar, but Illumination as well, which was lamp shaded by Honest Trailers.

The Cats vs Dogs thing is so tired. Dogs and cats don't hate each other. Dogs chase cats because their instincts tell them to chase smaller animals. Cats hiss at dogs because their instincts tell them to intimidate and discourage larger predators. It's just nature. We only see it so often because dogs and cats are the most commonly kept animals.

I've never had a dog, I've always lived with cats, but I love them both. Even though I'm a cat person, I still love dogs. Our neighbors have a really sweet dog, and I had a lot of fun giving it belly rubs last summer.

@@itamaryhop depends. we had a chihuahua over once that antagonized our cat, who was bigger than it. and the dog we actually own (a jack russell) leaves the cat alone, because a bigger cat our roommate used to have taught him how to behave around cats.
so i guess it could depend on the breed/personality of either the dog or the cat.
The fact this movie can be an acronym of S.L.O.P is the best part of the movie.

I honestly refuse to believe that this film exists. The entire movie is just a huge copy of Toy Story which is a far better movie made by a somewhat better company. And as a person who grew up watching Toy Story, this movie disappoints me in a lot of ways.

I never understood the appeal of Illumination's movies, or how they did so damn well. Every... damn... one... is painful and not funny. The only way that I can see them being so popular is that they manage to create scenes and characters that are really easy to use in memes. The vast majority of animated character based memes out there that I see, are almost always from Illumination properties.
Illumination's audience is mostly moms and 5 year olds

Then Illumination changed the focus to the minions and gross out, beneath childish humor.
@@PPP-dr8ng this, because it's a safe, huge market. they make bank by playing things safe, putting in just enough effort for people to go see it and keep kids' eyes busy, and roll in the cash. they know what pulls those seats and have perfected it. most of the budget, aside from celebrity voices, goes to marketing.
their films seem to be made from focus-tests/data to guarantee success and to appeal to everyone to the point of no complexity so they're just bland and sort of a waste of animators' talents at the end of the day.
Say what you want about illumination's movies but despicable me one is amazing
They have good marketing skills that’s what brings them there and the themes and plots are fun and interesting, it’s just the execution that really lacks
I somehow have only seen the sequel, and honestly if it had just been about the main dog being on the farm and learning about what life is like for other dogs like farm dogs and hunting dogs I think they had something good going there, but instead they threw six tv episode scripts into one movie and thought that would be good.
That plot basically sums up a story I’m making, but the main characters are humans instead. I liked the sequel, but I was only interested in the farm subplot.

I remember watching this movie and thinking "Man, that girl's (the owner of the main dog) life seems very lonely, all she has is a dog" since it's kind of implied she leaves to go to work and time she's not working she spends with her dog

Imagine a movie that’s from a dogs eye view as he lives a life that’s calm and chill all whilst you get the owner going through the motions of a bachelor/bachelorette that’s lonely and wants more out of life.

I wonder why the movie wasn’t about Tiberius. He’s clearly more interesting than the main characters, his story of trying to find a friend despite his killer instincts has at least a trace of heart in it and Albert Brooks did a great job with his voice performance.

The truth is, when I saw the progress, it seemed to me the most decent thing that illumination has produced and I even think that it could be an improvement for the company, but knowing illumination I don't have so much faith in it.

This is what makes it worth appreciating imho. You see abandoned animals like reptiles because they're often neglected by their owners and a tattooed pig because sometimes people actually practice tattooing on them (horrible!) because their skin is similar to humans'. It's a particular sort of fanservice for animal lovers.
Agreed, it points out how a lot of Reptiles are neglected, But I have a huge problem with the enclosures for the birds, turtle, fish, and small animals shown as being normal/ok. From what I can remember, NONE of the cages, tanks, etc. were the proper size, nor did they have any kind of enrichment (toys, hides, things to climb on, etc.) I get that it’s just a movie, but kids and adults that don’t know any better will see that, and it gives them the idea that it’s ok. How many kids do you think asked their parents for a pet of some sort after watching this movie? It made me want to get another few and I’m an adult. I wonder how many hamsters, guinea pigs, bunnies, fish, birds, turtles, etc. were put in improper enclosures and given to kids that had no business owning them after this movie. Makes me shudder to think about.

Illumination has become basically:
- too many characters on the main quest/plot/conflict
- a chase scene is obligatory, this one film subverted the expectations and gave us TWO scenes of the villains chasing the heroes

I will admit the one thing that I did like from this movie was when the owners coming home to greet their pets. I honestly thought it was sweet seeing the dynamics between the pet and owners.
I am very trepedatious about the upcoming Mario movie. 100% there is going to be some overworked mom character shoehorned in who's going to have a kids with quivering-lip close-ups, and shes going to _break free_ and save the day as a total _bad*ss._ "Go get em, mom!" Illumination knows exactly 1 audience: single-digit aged kids and their middle-American mothers

It's too bad because the animation is great, but super generic (just like all other parts of illumination films). If they had some creativity and didn't just aim for the bottom they could actually make something nice.

i like how so many of the abandoned pets are exotic pets and barely any cats or dogs, because it's such a real and common problem with people getting exotics for 10 year olds and abandoning them

I watched, and mother of god it sucks but real hard.
A 2.5/10, that's just awful. Worse than Open Season 3, Trolls, Smurfs 2, etc.
the sequel may not be as great but there's few new characters (cough cough rooster) actually made me feel very happy to see him and hear his voice. one of the best characters in my opinion and i actually hope there's a third one (hopefully better story)
Only good compliment I can give to this franchise is replacing the main character's VA to Patton Oswalt in the sequel. Other than that it's just a toy story bootleg.

The focus of this movie should have been the Flushed Pets. I will die on this hill. I mean, that is a fucking sewer full of abandoned animals with broken hearts who've come to hate humans because of how they've been abused and discarded. That shit would have written itself.
That would actually been a cool and a better movie if it was focused on the flushed pets and how they became that. And if it was by a better company
It's sad, because Illumination has a lot of funny and creative ideas and are great at visual gags, but the actual plots and dialogue are just... eugh.
I kind of liked the movie until the "plot" started and then it was so cookie cutter. Boss Baby was like that too It wasn't that bad at the start. The conflicts are always such garbage.

The only character I cared about was Duke's former owner, that poor old man died without his beloved dog by his side, never getting closure of what happened to his poor pup... I think the funniest thing is that excluding Despicable Me (the first one) which was pretty good Illumination has made at best mid movies and then they just make the Mario Movie which 1. Is absolutely amazing (At least it was in my expereince as a pretty big Mario fan) and 2. There's 1 scene that feels even remotly like what Illumination normally makes which ironically enough involves a dog that looks like it's from secret life of pets.

I like the film. Amidst some ideas like all the cats being mean (which I learned early into my life, fortunately, that cats are just as loving and playful as dogs) and having some predictable subversions (I see mixed things about Snowball, like on this review, but I personally thought he was the highlight of the movie), it does have some neat ideas like having the entire plot unfold within 24 hours, the tour around New York in the second act, and some of the jokes.
I’m definitely bias on the fact that I love animals, especially since the animators paid close attention to how they move. I also think that Max and Duke reconciling could’ve been longer, but perhaps in that moment of Duke revealing to Max that going back to the pound meant lights out for him, Max decided maybe being a douche wasn’t the best idea and they needed to work together to get back home alive.
Heck, he does try to make things right towards the end, so I very much like the way Max ended up being portrayed. He didn’t have an arc as strong as Gru’s, but he did at least learn that being the alpha doesn’t mean you make other people carry out your whims.
The second movie though? I only thought it was okay, with it throwing out the 24 hour rule from the first and trying to tell three stories at once when one of them could’ve been delegated to a short.
One thing this studio always nails is lighting and shadows, and the vibrancy of the colour palette. Independent of the story and character writing, and character design (which range from decent to bad), there's vibrancy to the overall visual tone.
The power dynamic is surprisingly accurate I have two dogs and the small one is constantly trying to be dominant the big one will sometimes either just take it or not it depends on their mood that day

When the dog showing them the way just walked off the building that actually got a laugh out of me. That and the stunned reactions to it paired with the line "so the way is death?". I don't know why that struck me so funny😂

Secret life of pets:
Dog and owner are inseparable until one day she gets a BOYFRIEND (instead of another stupid dog). New boyfriend hates dogs so they spend the whole movie trying to win the girls affection and get rid of each other. Boyfriend eventually manages to succeed but dog ends up exposing him and subsequently introduces his owner to a new, better guy at a dog park.
Tell me that isn't a better movie.
I hated this film.

The more I think about Duke’s Backstory, the more I say “Hey, why isn’t the movie just about that, it would’ve been so much better!”

Pixar: Man, they really are the best to these films.
Illumination: Well that was a waste of time and money.

Saying the first few minutes felt like a complete short, reminds me how the Sing 2 trailers look like they just condensed the whole movie into a short.

Really not a big fan of these kinds of films. The whole "Secret Life of Pets" series has only reconfirmed the notion for me that Illumination made one good film and just gave up beyond that point.
I remember when this film came out, my family found coupons for the theater and we had to pick between this or S squad, my cousins were really young at the time so my family chose pets, Looking back I’m not sure what the better option would’ve been
My family got a ticket to the local budget theater, and we had to choose between _Suicide Squad_ and _Kubo: The Two Strings_
I think I would’ve picked Suicide Squad, just because I can make fun of it.
When I was a kid I enjoyed this movie on the first watch and quickly got over it as my friends and circumstances made me have to watch it like THREE TIMES!!! I specifically remember arguing with my friend over it on a sleepover. Ugh....

I remember seeing this movie with my mom and my bro. After the movie ended, we all just REAMED all the bad bits of it. I specifically remember talking about the the drowning sense, and the drunk sausage sense.
My favorite characters are gidget, and chloe. Not because of their personalities, but because they look cute. Though, I do love sassy cats.
They quite literally just made Toy Story 1 and 2 but with Pets (I know he mentioned it, but I have even more comparisons)
* Animals act different and talk when owner is away
* A NEW pet is introduced and the old pet is jealous
* The original pet tries to get rid of the old pet out of jealousy
* The two end up fighting and said fight leads to them both getting lost
* The two pets realize that if they're going to get back to their owner, they're going to have to work together
* The first pet begins to have sympathy for the other one
* They end up with a bunch of evil pets who try to kill them (In Toy Story its Sid)
* Gidget's scenes are like the Toys still at Andy's house trying to find Buzz
* The Sausage dog is obviously slinky
* The ensemble of pets searching for Woody is basically Toy Story 2 when they're looking for woody
* Duke's story is the Toy Story 2 Jessie thing
* Then when Duke gets kidnapped by animal control, its like when Woody gets stolen by Al from Al's Toy Barn
* Then, the ensemble cast has to save Duke
* The pets all get home safe back to their owners after their crazy adventure and their owners don't even know anything happened.
They literally stole like every plot point from the Toy Story Franchise
And this is the movie studio Nintendo trusted enough to make the Mario movie... Wonderful...
They were originally going to make it with Sony, so be glad it’s not the worst studio.

Honestly I don't expect it to be a masterpiece or anything. It looks super enjoyable and funny, maybe not an especially great film. We know the bar is set kinda low tbh.

I watched this movie because I was too lazy to turn off the TV while I was cooking. I admit it's a little dull but it was enjoyable, mostly it felt like a multiple episode small kid's show that they decided to cash up as a movie

I honestly don’t mind this film, I’ve watched it with my little sister so much that I kind of enjoy this film. I prefer the sequel tho. Secret Life Of Pets and it’s sequel are just cutesy animal movies that you turn off your brain and enjoy the cute pets. Sure they aren’t the best, but I’d say they’re better than MOST Illumination films.

I once was at a lecture of one of the makers of this movie and through all of his talk he didn’t stop comparing the movie to toy story
The joke about the prim proper poodle loving rock music is hilarious to me . Poodle owners who groom them like that are stereotypically snooty, uptight, and “posh”, so the dog being so the opposite is funny! It infers that when the owner is around they have to put on a fake personality the whole time
This movie was just the plot of Toy Story but with animals.
