I believe the collective noun for art supplies is An Ecstasy of Art Supplies. As an almost exclusively studio painter this video made my head spin! I love how you have streamlined your process not just for your subject but for your mood and circumstances. However you paint, doing this just makes it all flow so much better. It allows you to just paint with minimal frustration.
One thing I've been ranting and raving to any of my art friends about using travellers journals for custom sketchbooks. I just saddle stitch my own papers together and then I can have inserts of multiple different kinds of paper, the exact types of paper that i want, all in one sketchbook. I've found i also like having the lesser amount of pages as well because it's really satisfying to see the insert full on every page, when I'm notorious for only half finishing my large sketchbooks. Eyeing that pochard box. I've been on the fence about getting one for a while, but while i paint when I'm out and about often, i don't necessarily paint from life 🤔still contemplating, but at least i know what one to look into if i do take the dive now.
This was a great video! I’m heading out to west coast Canada for a week of plein air painting…taking watercolour and gouache with me. I debated which pochade box to purchase couple years ago, considered the U-Go one you have, but opted for the CupEasels Superlite (made locally in Canada). It has a side shelf to hold my collapsible water container and the owner just designed for me another side shelf for the right side similar to yours. In the meantime, my ready to go backpack (and OMG, yes have several different options of bags) is always packed with sketching and watercolour, brushes and water reservoir brushes, pens, pencils and Tombow grey tone dual tips like yours. I’ve also tried several sketchbooks and for travel it comes down to 2 different sizes of the Stillman & Birns Beta which is great for all my sketching and painting options. The soft cover is lighter than my hardcover Etchr Perfect Sketchbook and S&B Beta coil bound. I also love the A4 size Fabriano Fatpad which has 140lb hotpress type paper.
What a fun video for addicts like me, and so good to know I am not alone. The u.go is now on my wishlist.... hoping they have a Black Friday sale. Meanwhile, it's something to live for 😉. AND I've been dreaming of your travel brush set since I got your original set. So yay! Can't wait! I too forget a wipe cloth pretty much every time I rinse it out. Finally solved that problem with a pack of terrycloth wristbands that I slip around my portable palettes so one is always there, no matter which one I want to grab. Also gives a little protection when it's bouncing around in my bag or pocket.
I might need a 12 step program for my travel paint kit addiction. I have at least 11 at this point. I make doubles sometimes, so I can coax my daughter into coming along. My heaviest kit is my easiest. I put it all in a beach cooler built like a dolly. I pull it along and can sit on the cooler and have lunch and drinks. Great video. Thanks. I am loving your brushes BTW.
Have your original Craftamo brushes, which are a dream to paint with, and now subscribed to the monthly tutorials for a year so slowly receiving more brushes and enjoying Shinhan gouache too as opposed to my usual Winsor and Newton. (Best pressie my hubby splurged on for me, bless him!) Now you tease us with travel brushes! Me thinks I'll be one of the first in line for those, as I'm sure you'll put a trillion percent of energy to ensure they are perfect for gouache, even though I have many Rosemary & Co travel brushes already for watercolours (daggers are my favourites lately for different marks and versitililty once I got over the initial learning curve and experimentation) and the eradicater brush is simply one I can't do without now! Brushes along with papers are an addiction for me, LoL!! I'm also moving away from half-pans because they ruin brushes over time unless time is spent gently rolling the brush which detracts from the spontaneous joy when pleinair painting as well as being more cumbersome to paint with... glad it's not just me. Plus full-pans and less space encourages using a more harmonious limited palette which has been brilliant for me. I've become a colour mixing fiend, LoL! Haven't bought many granulating colours, just a few Daniel Smith Primatek colours, so it's very interesting to hear your view on Jackman's granulating watercolours. Will definately remember that for my next treat. Wonderful video, as always, love seeing your set-up and advice as I do with the few favourite artists I subscribe to. Superb content, information and advice! All the best to you Sarah, Wolfie & the super cats. I did spy one getting into frame, but didn't know the name as I'm behind the times a tad! Made me think of your beautiful Vader who is most definitely being spoiled for adventure in spirit, I'm certain! Thank you for all your passion in inspiring us more amateur artists and loving the subscription beyond words! Thank You! 🤗🤗💛
So happy you are loving the brushes and boxes!! It's been a fabulous project for me too, in doing the very detailed tutorials I actually learn so much. And YES to full pans!! I wish I started doing that sooner. "a gentle roll" of the brush is exactly right. I feel more relaxed in the process when using the full pans. I was trying to think how I can modify one of my portable painters to fit full pans... :)
Hi Sarah! I love your ideas and suggestions for having several different kits, depending on what your plans are for painting outside! I thought I might be rather weird because I have these too! I really like your homemade view finder tools! Sometimes there are just so many interesting things to paint, it’s hard to decide what would work best for a painting! Thank you for sharing all the items you carry, and all your ideas and tools you use!👍

Thank you for your very informative video. The U-go pochade is my best investment this year. I absolutely love it. It's much sturdier and portable than what I tried in the past and is now my go to. I just got the seat pad for comfort. I had no idea that was a thing, so thank you for that tip, it will come in handy. For the home made sketchbooks, once you get started, it really doesn't take much time to make. I've been making mine while watching(/listening) tv and I really enjoy painting on my Arches and Fabriano Artistico sketchbooks outside. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on your travel brushes when they come out. That's exciting news! Love your art, love your videos!...
24:16 I saw this trick in one of your shorts and went out to buy some tinted acetate. I need to layer the acetate to completely overcome colours and see a near-monochromatic red image. I find the red or magenta acetates enhance values (darks become darker and lights become lighter) and the green acetates give near-accurate values. I haven’t used them to paint yet, though.
Sarah, your hair looks so nice that length. It is so becoming to your facial features. Thanks for sharing your favorite Supplies and I can relate to the backpack/bag addiction.😊
I'm happy to see you using a Retro 51! It's my favorite fountain pen. I also love the Pilot Parallel 3.8 (and I did the hack of putting the nib on an Opus 88 Demonstrator pen). Thanks for the tour of your supplies. That was fun!
I use my little pocket knife for pencil sharpening, opening boxes... use everyday! Habit learned from SF husband. One lives in my handbag & one in my vehicle too. Hiking, I’d definitely carry a little pocket knife, water purification cup, twine, poncho, spare pair of socks & a lighter. Be safe out there Sarah. ❤ your shared art this video!
Yoooo got so excited about the travel brush prototype! I love hearing your favorite tools round up. It’s like Oprah’s Favorite Things but much much more relevant. 😂❤
Thanks so much again Sarah for doing all the hard sorting for us! Going on my first plein air this weekend this weekend 😸and will look totally like I have it together..... 🙌 😉 . Always a delight to see your lovely face and talent x
Haha… I always love seeing other people’s bag collection… makes me realize I’m not alone 😅. I haven’t tried Hahnemuhle 100% cotton books, they’re ridiculously expensive here in Canada; I can find Etchr on sale (occasionally) much cheaper here, so I tend to go back and forth between Etchr and Stillman & Birn, depending on the medium. Bags, books, paints and brushes… how could a video be better? 😊 I’ve had one of those 6x8 pochade boxes on my wish list for a while now. They look amazing.
@@SarahBurnsStudio For me, I can get an Etchr A5 for $32 (on sale a couple of times a year) with free shipping, but the Hahnemuhle is $39-41 and the lowest shipping option is $17 or $19. I need one of the art stores that offers free shipping to start carrying them (or my local store).
Sarah, this was a great video! Thank you so much for sharing about your plein air packs. I try to encourage others to want to go outside and paint, and take a group out each month. I always try to get them to understand you don’t need tons of “stuff” to start, just some basics. Well done.😊
I'd like to buy a ugo. Do you like the 6x8 the best or would you prefer one a little larger? Is there enough room to mix paint on the 6x8 palette? Thanks.
I love the 6x8 for my setup because I want to be very portable. It fits in my bikepacking setup too. If I was not hiking or biking with it, I'd go one size up. That gives a little more mixing space. But for me, the 6x8 is perfect!! I'm used to mixing on small palettes anyway, so the 6x8 is already an improvement in that area
Loved this tutorial today, Sarah. Your information on what you take in your backpacks for plein air helped me thoroughly to see what items I might purchase next.
Regarding pochade box...u go is excellent. However I always felt that quick release plate is better if placed not on bottom of pochade box but to back of lid...that way it doesn't move much when I painting and pushing canvas
Hey Sarah, great video…have you considered using a towelling sport wrist band in your travel kit as an alternative to paper or sponge for cleaning your brushes? I use one and they are really handy 😊
Hmm..I just happened to be in the market for travel brushes I’ve been searching but I might wait now 😅 honestly I got your last set and I love them! I was going to make a roll up case for them for traveling
I love your product videos! Congrats on the travel brushes - good ones are hard to find. Unfortunately I haven't been having a good experience with Craftamo. Just today I finally received my monthly box, and there were no brushes in it. :(
You keep killing me with the Strathmore travel sketchbooks. Why, oh why, were they discontinued (rhetorical question)?! I'm a bag "collector" too.😉 I have the U-go medium pochade box. I'm a big fan. I don't carry loads of camera gear, so the little bit of extra size is not a problem.
You can buy this Strathmore paper that is in the travel,sketchbook..in blocks and just regular sheets…but you cannot buy the “travel” one.. and it’s going to take a lot of people emailing Strathmore requesting that particular sketchbook for them to put it back on the market. I have emailed them three times ..and each time they keep telling me that they’ve turned my request over to the proper department…🙄….so what it’s going to take is a lot of “ I want I need it “ pressure …and I hope we can get it back on the market .
Love this! Question: do you think the brush designs in your boxes will ever be released as a second set on their own? I have your original set and they are my favorites! And I'm totally in on purchasing your travel brushes! Sadly, it is not in my budget to do the boxes but I am in your Patreon and love it.
I bought myself my 1st gold nib fountain pen last year as a present to myself after having gone back to school, graduated, passed the national exam and become an RVT (registered veterinary technician). Do I have an over abundance of other fountain pens and inks? Yes. Do I still look at them? Also yes. Just got a printable painter classic and micro. Trying to decide what to put in them. Leaning towards gouache in the classic and watercolor in the micro.
I’m wondering if anyone else has found the brand called Potentate by Lightwish? It’s set up is like a 6 ring binder so you can swing the opposing pages completely out of the way. The pages are acid free 140# in hot or cold press. The pages are removable so you can switch them around or remove completely without having to tear them. I’ve used watercolor and gouache and am surprised at how well the paper takes the paint. They are inexpensive and easy to toss in a backpack. Easily accessible in the US on Amazon.
Sarah, how do these magnetic paint containers work? Can I buy them or do you prepare them yourself? It would be so much easier to change colour's around then with the containers with metal brackets (don't know the English expression) to hold them in place. I would appreciate your advice. Thanks - Geli
Finally managed to process the whole video. What came into my mind is the following: do you have different sketchbooks in all of your backpacks and setups? Or you switch them? Because I see you have the Paul Rubens, that was filled mostly with one type of paintings. I'm always struggling with this, because I wish to have a dedicated sketchbook to paintings and another one for sketches, but then I either have 5 different sketchbooks with me all the time, or I have one sketchbook in the bag, and that has all kinds of mixed drawings, sketches and paintings... at the end the sketchbook content is not really presentable. 🤣
I have lots of sketchbooks because I like trying different papers! My two main types are 1. Beige paper (mainly for gouache or drawing) and 2. watercolor paper. I choose one or the other depending what mood I'm in (sometimes I bring both). I choose size based on how far I'm walking or again what mood I'm in. Basically I just like to change things up. It's totally fine to have sketchbooks for different subjects or mediums, or one for everything! There are no rules. Make up your own :)
Hi Sarah, please help! I’m an Aussie who’s loved your videos ever since you introduced me to the breathtaking coastline of Scotland! Like you, I love to experiment. Last year I did a deep dive into using fountain pens (with waterproof ink) with watercolour. But after a hiatus I have pens that don’t work. I guess the ink has dried in the nib. Do you have a video (or recommendation) on cleaning them out so they can be used again? Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this informative video. I enjoyed it very much. Just a question, do you have a suggestion for a lightweight, portable stool for plein air trips?
A "trove" of books is how you call rare or valuable books. Since all sketchboos are unique to the artist, this might be a fitting collective noun for sketchbooks. What do you think @sarahburnsstudio?
Oh noooo….not fountain pens! I remember buying my first one. My advice is to stay away from gold nibs, because one will never be enough. They really are amazing.
Sarah - I went to buy your brush set, and they''re out of stock! I've signed up for a notification for when they're back it, but do you know when that's likely to be? *Insert Patience Here*
why use a sketchbook? the extra weight.... I like to use cut pieces of wc paper and have tape wrapped around my little plastic board to tape down my paper. I hate carrying extra weight.
Depends what kind of nib you like! (tiny lines or thick?) I love love love all the pens I mentioned in my supply list. Any of them would be fine to start with. Pretty much all fountain pens come with a cartridge of ink to start.
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thanks so much for replying! I'm really just looking for something that isn't super expensive and is easy to refill and clean. I think nib size preference will come with experience so i'd likely just choose a medium width to start. I'll take a look at your list. Thanks again!

Is it 100% cotton? Was just wondering what paper is inside it to make my own if possible
@@jl4643 not sure. As someone else noted, they do make travel pads with the same paper. But not the sketchbooks
Love this! Question: do you think the brush designs in your boxes will ever be released as a second set on their own? I have your original set and they are my favorites! And I'm totally in on purchasing your travel brushes! Sadly, it is not in my budget to do the boxes but I am in your Patreon and love it.
I think we are going to release small sets of 2 or 3 that are featured in the boxes. Stay tuned!
Oh congrats!! That's an amazing self-gift!
👀 brush prototype
I bought an etcher the a4 one I know I'm going to enjoy it because I bought another one and that didn't go to well.
Sounds interesting!
I didn’t like the Reuben’s for watercolour either. I normally like hot pressed. It’s not you, it’s the paper.
Sarah, how do these magnetic paint containers work? Can I buy them or do you prepare them yourself? It would be so much easier to change colour's around then with the containers with metal brackets (don't know the English expression) to hold them in place.
I would appreciate your advice.
Thanks - Geli
I buy all the pieces individually. I super-glue magnets to the back of the pans. Then I can change them as required :)
def a very nice Pochade Box 😀 Im trying to figure out how hard it would be to design one and 3D print it, could be all kinds of filament colours 😁
That sounds fun! You could customize it to your exact needs!
You can buy fountain pen cleaner liquid online. If you used fountain pen ink it should come out
Thanks for this informative video. I enjoyed it very much. Just a question, do you have a suggestion for a lightweight, portable stool for plein air trips?
I got a really cheap folding stool from a camping store. It's excellent!
I wish I could buy empty kuretake watercolour pans. They are a very generous size. 26:41
A "trove" of books is how you call rare or valuable books. Since all sketchboos are unique to the artist, this might be a fitting collective noun for sketchbooks. What do you think @sarahburnsstudio?
Hey Sara! What is the main reason you take u.go instead of your etchr slate mini?
do you use Saunders watercolour paper
Oh noooo….not fountain pens! I remember buying my first one. My advice is to stay away from gold nibs, because one will never be enough. They really are amazing.
Sarah - I went to buy your brush set, and they''re out of stock! I've signed up for a notification for when they're back it, but do you know when that's likely to be? *Insert Patience Here*
You don’t use an umbrella?
Rarely-if I do it's temporary so I can pack up, because if it's raining, it's enough to make me move on
I was looking at Paul Ruebens sketch books yesterday and I didn’t see any 100% cotton paper. Did I miss one that is 100% cotton?
Yes it's the PINK cover sketchbook
why use a sketchbook? the extra weight.... I like to use cut pieces of wc paper and have tape wrapped around my little plastic board to tape down my paper. I hate carrying extra weight.
Because I love working in a sketchbook, it's like a travel journal for me
I have been putting off buying a fountain pen because I am a little afraid.. What pen would you recommend to try to a total noob such as myself?
Depends what kind of nib you like! (tiny lines or thick?) I love love love all the pens I mentioned in my supply list. Any of them would be fine to start with. Pretty much all fountain pens come with a cartridge of ink to start.
@@SarahBurnsStudio Thanks so much for replying! I'm really just looking for something that isn't super expensive and is easy to refill and clean. I think nib size preference will come with experience so i'd likely just choose a medium width to start. I'll take a look at your list. Thanks again!
