- Big Thanks to my main gang @michaelcaplin8969 @JiveMiguel @canaconn2388 and adriii6444, couldn't have done it without you guys.
This is a mainly noise reduced version of the cassette that was speed fixed and azimuth matched by @JiveMiguel . I then AI isolated the missing vocals from the DAT tape and chucked it back on the song to fill in the missing gaps of the cassette.
Hope you all enjoy :)
Since so many people asked for a download link...
Here is the WAVE file: (can't link cause YT is weird)

Lost media actually worth finding.
Literally fuck a SpongeBob commercial
Is not the only good lost media in the internet... but is gold. Sound really good.
@SuperGabbyGabs im pretty sure most lost media people online are just kids dumped onto the internet, if the extreme interest in mid European new wave is any indication- showing them bands like blondie or the bangles would probably blow their little minds
I will eternally be absolutely GUTTED that this wasn’t officially released…
This one, and my favorite that missed the cut was Mr. Sam.
How incredible is this. It’s a gift. This song is so damn good. It’s a standalone like FM. Steely Dan is the best band in history. I’ll defend till I die.
How is it possible to love this song so much and so long after it was recorded?!
I'll defend it "night by night" every night until I die!
(Subtle hint about the BEST SD song)
@@nickgodalin6487ooooh, hot take. I respect it. The extended double entendre in that song is very much underappreciated
I defend it while wearing green earrings on a weekend in TJ.
@@HughMorristheJokerDon't forget to pack your bad sneakers...
Babe, wake up! New Steely Dan song just dropped!
when Fagen ends the bridge and he's all like "I'll just move back one squaaaaare" and the guitar hits you again with the freshness brub OH BABY that shit is just the greatest shiz known to man
This is definitely the best quality version I've heard of this yet. I keep listening to it over and over. Great work!
You should listen to Michael's and JM's mixes
:troll:
Really? good god.
michael caplin edit for me
Isn't it amazing how many times you can listen to Steely Dan song, and it still pull's you in... I never get tired of the genius of Dan and Walter
This is incredible, not just the song but this restoration. Holy shit I'm not surprised they did this over and over and decided it wasn't worth it cus they'd never do it this good again. I don't think they fuckin could've.
God this mix is fucking amazing. I love it when lost media like this is found. Such a hidden gem
A++++ You nailed it, definitely worth all the effort. Saw them at Westbury in '73 when they "opened" for Cheech & Chong. Starter song "Bodhisattva", that was it, I was hooked for life. One of my good friends brought along his college 'music professor' who later remarked "I'm not impressed, these guys are going nowhere". I told my friend he was wasting his money at that school.
Steely Dan with Cheech & Chong sounds like an amazing time
An older couple, who came, with a young child, left during C&Cs first routine. They paused the act to apologize and explain that their show was not appropriate for kids that age. We will assume they were there to see the Dan, but were a bit surprised with what followed!
This track, the other Gaucho outtakes, AI track separation, remixes, and good liner notes would make for a great Gaucho box set. If Fagen hurries, it might be ready for the 50th Anniversary.
I cannot explain how much I love this tune.
It’s top 5 SD now for me.
I just stumbled across an AI remix of The Beach Boys “lost” (or should I say “what if?”) album “Smile”, and it’s frighteningly impressive. I feel like it’s only a matter of time before our new computer overlords wrap their tentacles around the lost Gaucho recordings and pull them into the 21st century.
That being said, this is the most impressive version of the Second Arrangement I’ve heard yet. It’s amazing what dedicated music fans can do with nothing but distorted scraps.
It’s exciting right ? I don’t care if they take my job and enslave me or whatever , they’re going to raise ‘the second arrangement’ from the dead and it’s the best SD song I ever heard.
Totally worth it ! The age of miracles
I got an excellent copy of this in the 80’s through a friend who was associated with Tom Scott. The cassette was sent to him so he could do a horn arrangement. The quality was outstanding and, like this, fully mixed. Would have loved to hear this with his arrangement.
Do you by any chance still have that copy of the cassette? possibly a digitized version?
bump, please make this copy public
Ohh, that would legit be cool to make public if you still can.
And Damn, Tom Scott truly has done everything, even before UA-cam XD
You can't just say that and then not drop the copy dude
copy by chance?
Now if Donald Fagan & the Walter Becker estate can use the same technology that the surviving Beatles & Giles Martin used for "Now & Then", they can save this missing masterpiece.
Here for the Steel....stayed cuz the Dan
this is easily a top ten or top five Steely Dan song. It's unbelievable hoy good it is. What a crime that it got erased in such a stupid way. Kudos for bringing it back to life.
I often have this song and its hook guitar/Rhodes Electric Piano line melody running thru the head at certain random moments. But I agree with whoever said that it wasn't their best effort. For one thing, it's missing a classic stellar obligatory guitar solo somewhere between a chorus and a verse.
To give Steely Dan some credit, this wasn’t finished when it was lost, so i am sure it would have had one if it wasn’t a demo
And to make it accurate, they have to hire at least three guitarists before they settle on a guitar solo.
This may be my new favorite Dan track, I can't stop listening to it. Great hook and the guitar solo fits perfectly.
At 3:25 when Fagen exclaims, "then I run to the 2nd Arrangement", the way the bass line & the rhythm suddenly ramp up and kick into overdrive, it literally SOUNDS as if he's actually sprinting.
This NEEDS TO BE PUBLISHED on music streaming platforms. Its a 10/10
Kudos..! There were some pretty fuzzy mixes of this floating around and this is by far the best mix I’ve heard. Amazing to think one of Steely Dan’s best songs was never officially released.
This song was supposed to be on the Gaucho album but got deleted by mistake. So they added another song instead. They should make a remastered Gaucho album and add this awesome song to it. It’s amazing.
Time Out of Mind is my favorite in the album but yes a full remastered album including this would be great. Have you heard Mr Sam? Unreleased from another recording.
They resurrected "Third World Man" a tune intended for Royal Scam but didn't fit on that album.
@benvye4279 it was actually recorded during Aja. It would definitely have fitted on The Royal Scam, it would have been among the better songs on it if they cut a track.
I’m a huge huge SD fan. And this is absolutely my favorite song by them I wish Donald Fagen would make a new album and put this song onto it.
Sounds super clean! Just makes you think, man what if..
This is incredible. You can barely hear the lofi residue in the vocals, but if I wasn't listening for it, I would have given this the stamp of approval for studio quality (maybe not to SD's level, but still incredible).
whenever I see a shooting star, my wish is that this song get an official release.
Unnecessary at this point. This restoration is probably as close as it gets to what an "official release" would sound like.
Plus, I don't think Donald Fagan would ever release anything that wasn't polished to the usual SD standard of excellence.
It was released on UA-cam.
Lost for 40+ years.
Even with the dust it’s better than ANY NEW SONG IN THE LAST 20 YEARS.
idk why but I love the shitty quality ones more than a proper restoration, makes the guitar and drums more potent, yknow?
I don't understand.
same, makes the song sound more energetic for some reason
My mouth was agape for nearly all of my first listen. Going from years of listening to the demo and its pronounced audio limitations to what's presented here is just off the charts. The clarity and punch was borderline surreal to hear. Thank you so much for reviving and fleshing out this buried treasure of theirs.
The sound is certainly not studio quality, but so much better than previously released restoration of that old kassette tape. And finally we get to hear Fagans voice.
The Steely tribute I'm in covers this. It's a blast to play.
Fantastic work! This is my new favorite Steely Dan tune. Thank You!!!
My daily listen
The backup vocals are amazing.
Sounds great! Thx from a SD fan
This is well done. it's about as good as it can be. Great song.
Best restoration I’ve heard…thanks!
This tune has been in constant heavy rotation for me to make up for the years it’s not been on Gaucho.
Love it.❤❤❤
Need this on the restoration album. LOVE YOU STEELY
Thank you very much, Andreas - awesome work here from all involved! I guess we hear Chuck Rainey on bass and Jeff Porcaro (or Ed Greene) on drums. 🙏🤩👏👍
Ed Greene -drums
Don Grolnick-keyboards
Will Lee-bass
Hiram Bullock-guitar
@@SwedestThing, yeah you're right - thanks! 😊
@swedestthing, you're probably right on the personnel, but is there a fully reliable source that you've seen listing these precise musicians?
Ed Greene said, in an interview, that he did rhythm tracking with the those musicians and it was the wiped track.
So good to hear this again. Wonderful restoration.
amazing job, my dude
Love the teamwork guys… probably the closest I’ve heard that was Gaucho standard. Bravo and thanks to all.
FANTASTIC!!!!
Stunning work to get it sounding so good!
Easily the best mix I've heard, don't know how you've managed to restore the vocals - but credit to you, a lot of work has really paid off 👌🏻
Imagine that…
This tune is solid top 10 SD fav for me.
Maybe top 5?
Don’t do drugs.👍
I wish this woulda made vinyl.😞
I tried to write the lyrics, but I wasn't able to catch some words and phrases, maybe a native speaker can help.
Pour out the wine little girl
I've got just two friends in this whole wide world
Here's to reckless lovers
We all need somebody

I've got my life and laundry in a Gladstone bag
You should know the program
Just one red rose and a ??? goodbye
One last goodbye

It's only the natural thing

With no regrets
A sparkling conscience
A new address
When I run to the second arrangement
The home of a mutual friend
Now's the time
To redefine the first arrangement again
It's a sticky situation
A serious affair
I must explain it to you somehow
Right now I'll just move back one square
Here comes that noise again
Another scrambled message from my last best friend
Something I can dance to
A song with ???
All friends abandoned me
It's just the routine politics of jealousy

One of the great tragedies of the 20th century that this song was abandoned.
Lets enjoy this video before those bastards, Universal Music Group, take it down. Lets keep fighting the Second Arrangement war!
Why did they never release this, this song slaps
because the finished recording got deleted by an engineer
@@blandmallscorp5879 I ended up looking up the story, it sucks cause they even tried to redo the song but couldn’t get it right
After a recording engineer deleted it by accident, it was lost media for over 40 years. A completely intact tape was just found last year
Backup work tapes where found, the original master was completely deleted. This song still and will always remain lost media, maybe one day a higher quality digital backup could be found on Rogers hard drives but that remains a mystery.
@@AndreasMixesAi will be the last step in making this the crystal clear track it was always meant to be.
Im not sure if you’ve heard this, but this is an Ai remix/recreation of The Beach Boys (somewhat) lost album “Smile”. Having listened to the scraps of the original sessions and the half-assed albums that were released over the years, I was damn impressed with the final result:
ua-cam.com/video/n7W_2JS12CY/v-deo.htmlsi=BG2-c9nD4ibqnplD
Thanks for this mix ... first time I've heard of AI used to perform mixing tasks ;-)) . I join the ranks of the mourning who still despair that this song never made it to the masses ... but at least we have these tapes, and folks smart enough to know how to reassemble the song, so I'm happy...
Tell ya, the lady I meet and recognizes this song?
I’ll marry.
Or at least we will party under the svelte blanket of Aja.
That’s how I roll man.
I really wish this was on Vinyl!
So that's how Donald writes his lyrics 😂 fill in the blank!😅❤ This is a great template for writing!
Good spot! I found this very interesting indeed.
I'd have thought Walter. Other sites seem to think so.
@@chrisk475 I think there is a forum for that. 😅
This sounds amazing!
With much emotion, thank you
Gorgeous.
Thanks for posting
Sounds good!
Most satisfying mix I’ve heard. Hi ram’s guitar really sings
/Hiram!
Thank you. This is excellent.
Thank you. God bless.
Thanks for the huge effort in restoring this! Amazing work!
Best version by far! Well done
One of the best versions i have heard of this song. Well done for cleaning up this wonderful tune!
Great job
Amazing
this might be the best song they ever made
Wow it sounds great!!!!!!
Thank you! Ive been looking for a half decent version of this song and this is amazing! The uploaded tape is poor quality and is chopped up weirdly, and the modern remake just dosent hit the same vocally without the original singer.
good work man!
Great job! 👍👍
Epic!!
It's a great song. I love it. But I seriously cannot see how it would fit on Goucho. Goucho is a very dark, seedy album. It would be perfect for Aja.
Interesting.
cool!
Roger at the controls
From what I've heard, he was a really cool guy! ...a VERY hard worker.... innovative.
Thanks
Looks like Woody Harrelson at the console
I was thinking Three’s Company era John Ritter.
❤❤❤❤❤
Cest si bon
Dang that chorus is catchy
god i hope i can get a group together at some point and put together art like this
AMAZING remixing of the track!!! any chance of a download link?
❤👍👏👏
THIS IS THE SUMMER 24 JAM IDK WHAT ANY RECKLESS LOVERS SAY
CON GUSTO!
Roger 😢 Thanks to his daughters
Who is the engineer in the photo? Roger Richols?
thats right :)
Yes, the legend
The AI vocals need a very slight notching in the mids, they would match a lot better with that done. Otherwise, brilliant work.
Hi there! There are no AI vocals in this mix! It is a mix between the cassette vocals and the DAT vocals, I eqed the DAT vocals and added them in were they were missing in the cassette mix.
@@AndreasMixes Ahh, right. That explains it then.
I think the cassette vocals are a little too much in the upper mids and into the highs, its a pity you couldn't fully extract them and match the EQ of the DAT vocals a little more.
Good work nonetheless though.
This so needs the horns arrangement. Then this is perfect! Astounding work,@@AndreasMixes
would it be legal to add the old school horn track overdubs, after the fact...even if it's just the whole notes on the tenors / bari?
Amazing... Is the original DAT format available for download? Thanks!
You can obtain it from the article that Expanding Dan put out. expandingdan.substack.com/p/second-arrangement-steely-dan-roger-nichols-tape
Does anyone have that one guy’s mix where he added the horns??? Universal Music Group made him take it down
That's Jive Miguel's mix, it's on his Soundcloud
any chance of this ever getting released....?
Best version not using AI to fix stuff
It does! The AI was used to generate stems :)
Out of curiosity, back in 79 when they were making Gaucho, and the whole mess up occurred, why didn't they use Roger Nichol's tape and try to restore it using that. I have no tech expertise, so I am honestly asking here.
It's simply because the tape was just too low quality, also I assume nobody actually knew Roger had made this backup.
Can you provide a link to a .wav file?
ua-cam.com/video/dz9oolWz6b0/v-deo.html
Nice, vocals too loud in the mix though
I'm definitely going to revisit this, thanks very much for the constructive criticism. :)
the vocals sounds really on point, dude. the mixing is clean imo, better than any version i've found in this site.
I like the vocals up. Gotta include Fagen’s final “one LAST goodbye” from the DAT, though. IMO the song needs that vocal lift.
Anyone know who the players are on this? Namely the rhythm section…
Ed Greene-drums
Will Lee-bass
Hiram Bullock-guitar
Don Grolnick-keyboards
@@SwedestThing Ed Greene is one of those pocket session drummers we don’t hear enough about. Likely overshadowed by the sheer greatness of Parcaro, Gadd, Purdie, Rick Marotta, Hal Blaine, Keltner, etc.
Fagen is more creative then any musician in 20th century ..from sound to the lyrics ..& he went in his own direction all the time
@@JimEarns Ed Greene once played with Frank Zappa in his short-lived "Hot Rats Band" in February 1970 at the San Diego International Sports Arena.

Guitar: Zappa
Bass: Max Bennett
Drums: Ed Greene
Keyboards: Ian Underwood
The bootleg recording is on YT.
