Wonderful to see Edward IV's life and accomplishments outlined here. Although they have very little in common--are quite opposite in many cases--I'm still reminded of Octavian raising legions and claiming Caesar's legacy when he was merely 18 years old. What Edward accomplished after his father's death was beyond remarkable for a "boy" of that age. And he comes across as such a naturally happy person. Definitely one of history's most fascinating characters. As you point out near the end of the video, how differently would history have unfolded had he not died when he did?

I love the content you guys put out, I always disdained how the history channel sidelined their actual history shows in favor of mindless schlock like ancient aliens. This channel scratches that itch, honestly better than what the history channel used to put out.
Love this period of English history!!! I wonder if Empress Matilda was inspiration for Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the HBO television series House of the Dragon. GRRM used the war of the roses and many other parts of medieval history to inspire his work
Good looking, tall, greatly skilled in military, government, and merchant matters, married for love to a gorgeous wife, lots of children and lovers, loved by his people, died with his loved ones around him, his last decade mostly peaceful. He had it all! I just wonder if his soul was saved in the end, the best of both worlds. I sure wish I was born him!
I believe Edward fourth was one of the best well liked, amiable, militarily intelligent and talented kings. His story always fascinates and interests me and ill read anything i come across written about him
I wish these were released as a podcast as well so we can listen to them on the commute. Might offer an opportunity for ad revenue for the channel as well!
Did you know that Edward IVs mother Cecily Neville and her siblings were the children of Joan Beaufort youngest child of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford? So Edward's lineage encompassed three of Edward IIIs sons.
I would like to suggest that you do one on Charles of Navarre, known as Charles the Bad. A truly fascinating man, who flouted the laws of chivalry whenever they were "inconvenient" and bitterly resented not being King of France because of the spurious Salic Law that disinherited his mother Joan in favor of Philippe IV "the Fair". The tie-in to the Hundred Years' War is obvious.
Even though they were not related, Edward IV and Henry V were two of my favorite kings. Both never set out to be king, but when called to fulfill the role, they were amazingly suited for the throne. I just hate that Edward died -- and I've always read that he was suffering from a fever. So I think he had some kind of bacterial infection. A stroke might have affected him physically and mentally, but he seems to have had his faculties about him in his final days.
Uh, pretty sure they're related. Even if you believe the bogus rumour that Ed IV was illegitimate (he wasn't, but there's no convincing some people), they're still half-first cousins once removed: 1. Henry V, king of England, son of: 2. Henry IV, king of England, son of: 3. John of Gaunt, 1st duke of Lancaster & Blanche of Lancaster 1. Edward IV, king of England, son of: 2. Cecily Neville, duchess of York, daughter of: 3. Joan Beaufort, countess of Westmorland, daughter of: 4. John of Gaunt, 1st duke of Lancaster & Catherine Swynford
constant recurrence of the plague meant lot of people died. so the only option was for nobles to inter marry a lot. so many people in that time had both york and lancaster blood, it was crazy.
Edward the IV may have been "Warm" and "Generous" to many of his subjects and "Approachable" but if you got on his "Bad-side" their was a very, very good chance that he would reveal his "Fangs !!!." Yours truly Will VanNess
@@eugeniastravels8954 Received Pronunciation. We may define it as a standardised variant of British English, also called BBC English or Queen's English. Actually, things have changed a bit, so those definitions tend to be no longer fully fitting; nevertheless, despite the slight changes that time inevitably brings on language, RP remains a rather widespread southern English accent to be used in formal circumstances or by media, in many communicative situations. This video, in fact, gives us a valid example. A small number of Brits, anyway, even has RP as an inherent accent, but that's indeed a minority. Heightened RP; what I mentioned in my original comment, is a more traditional, more bombastic, more grandiloquent variant, now used way less than in the past.
I've really enjoyed your videos. Now that you've done videos for Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV, I'd like to see you do videos for the opposing couple, Margaret of Anjou and Henry VI.

A King that I didn't get to know in a deep dive into his character, My 1980's history teachers should be ashamed, how can a British child go through school and never learn their history? Its shameful when you think about it! Highlighting Edwards qualities & flaws makes him all the more real as a person, Thank You
You should read "The White Queen"....although it's a historical novel (meaning that purists go crazy about possible inaccuracies), it tells a great story about Edward IV and his wife Elizabeth Woodville.
I'm watching for a 2nd time. The first time, I fell asleep and woke up at the battle of Towton. I already knew a little about it but for some reason, in my foggy state, it sounded really weird and trippy - almost kind of freaky - like the death toll and stuff. Like maybe I had been there in a past life or something lol... I was thinking, I don't believe in ghosts, but if they were real, I imagine that place would be super haunted and probably still has a strange vibe. Either way, I love these kinds of videos.
On the upbringing: I'm from a person in Sweden who was the son of the Royal Housekeeper of Nyköping Castle (Brita Larsdotter) and so raised alongside the prince of Sweden. She was so involved in affairs that you can still find documents with her signature in the castle records. But my ancestor wasn't left to the winds or probably high ranking enough for his own tutor. I'm assuming mothers could have a role in the education of their children even if they were busy. There were other relatives available to take care at certain junctures, and being pregnant doesn't put you in stasis. If pregnancy was just stasis I'd sign up immediately.
King Edward the fourth is my 26th great grandpa... Ancestry done on my Mother's side maternal side it is very interesting to know that I know now where I assen from a royal side of only half have not had paterinal side done as deep but this takes me back with maternal side it all started my mother had not knowing much about her own father's side of her life boy she is ecstatic to have to find out everything unfolded the story of her journey brought her to a journey of royal blood running through our veins and learned a whole new side of things that take you on a very interesting journey of history you never know until it's like a book opening it up and the journey unfolds all I can say is wow who knew ?
Great video!! I have seen a lot of documentaries of the war of the roses, but this goes very in-depth of the person. I really did like the fact that he managed the kingdom the same way he did his Duchy as he was taught to do. A sad story of many betrayals from his best friend ( Richard Neville Kingmaker ) and his own flesh and blood , his brother George. I think it is also unfair for his memory to label him a bad king for the turbulent times following his death. The main cause of course is the usurpation of King Richard from King Edward V. I , however , am not entirely convinced that he did actually had his nephews killed due to the well-known loyalty and love he bore his brother. He did usurped the throne yes but I wouldn't think he would have killed them unless he himself had an heir where correct me if Im wrong did not. Im more convinced that Henry VII did it but I am not here to start a debate haha simply pointing out the unfairness to Edward IV. Sorry for the long post but @The People Profiles , could you consider doing a video about Marcus Tullius Cicero? I am sure that his life is worthy of your attention.
Actually, I think there's some justice in criticizing Edward on this point. He never really acknowledged or dealt with the gaping chasm between his wife's family and the other nobility (especially his brothers). It's very easy to criticize Richard Neville and Gloucester (Richard III) and label them as traitors, and Clarence never appears to have been more than a selfish opportunist. But Edward allowed an incredibly toxic environment to develop and fester in the wake of the initial stages of the War of the Roses and didn't apparently see how serious and deep the divisions were. He was drawn into a clique almost exclusively composed of the Woodvilles and their adherents, largely to the exclusion of everyone else from decision-making and opportunities for preferment and good marriages. And people knew darn well that Elizabeth and her family had long memories and scores to settle and that the young princes were and would be totally under their thumbs. On one level, that was just how things worked. But Elizabeth and her family, given its size, power, and influence, took the power and privilege thing to an extreme, such that they were regarded as a threat or obstacle to the futures and prospects and prosperity of any major landowner that wasn't part of the club, and it's hard to gainsay their critics on this point. Edward might have been affable, but he wasn't exactly neutral and he wasn't always going to be around and if he didn't live to a ripe old age, chances were almost nil of his sons learning to strike any kind of balance. It was clear that anyone not in Elizabeth's inner circle and favor--like Clarence and Richard, who married the Neville sisters--would be cut out of everything completely. And lo and behold! As soon as Edward died, Elizabeth and her family did all they could to sideline Richard, even though Edward had specifically provided for Richard to be regent for the boys and Richard had a huge amount at stake. Richard had to make a very nasty choice between allowing Elizabeth and the Woodvilles to take all of the power and control and being cut out of all the decision-making (just hoping they didn't turn on him and his or his holdings or make up some pretext to destroy him) or fighting for what control and power he could take under the circumstances.
"The main cause of course is the usurpation of King Richard from King Edward V." No this is not so, the installment of Richard was at the behest of parliament, who saw Edward V as conferring too much power on the Woodvilles, and moreover deemed to be illegitimate. I suspect that the turbulent times that followed were for other reasons, one of which you mention (the loss of his heir.)
I've never believed Richard killed the princes, I think it was more likely Lady Margaret Beaufort. Although supposedly devout, throughout history there are many examples where murder is explained away as being 'God's will' in the same today some terrorists use religion as a shield. She was apparently so convinced it was God's will her son sit on the throne I think she was ruthless and would have found any excuse to do anything required to get him there.
For any Edward IV admirer read The Sunne in Splendor by Sharon kay Penman. It's a great historical novel about Edward IV and Queen Elizabeth Woodville.
I have loved the story of King Edward IV for decades! I do not believe Richard III killed Edward's boys. Overall, a good synopsis of the Wars of the Roses. Beyond the Fetterlock is a good King Edward IV book.
For book readers: An in depth exhaustive study of Edward try Charles Ross's: "Edward IV " English Monarchs series (1974) book. 479 Pages of bio, facts, assumptions, historical accounts, battles, and many illustrations.
Which would yall prefer: Suleiman The Magnificent 1520-1566 or Charles I of Spain "The Emperor" 1516-1556 Both ruled during each others lifetime and during the hight of their civilizations respectively. Both being the strongest militarily and wealthiest states in Europe at the time and indeed the two strongest empires in the world. One Christian and one Muslim. A documentary on one of these monarchs would be epic.

Interesting. Edward IV was apparently well fit for the role of king, unlike his predecessor. Although, his legitimacy for the throne seems dubious as long as Henry VI and his son were alive. Still, he does seem to have been a quite likeable and wise ruler, although I deeply detest the assassination of Henry VI, so if it was done by Edward's command, shame on him. Regardless, he obviously had some sense when handling the kingdom's economics, and I appreciate his reforms and endeavours to root out corruption amongst authorities. A good king in general.
What a lot of people don't know is that from 1469 to 1474 England fought a naval war with the German Hansa which ended in, that familiar thing, a 'humiliating English climbdown'. The warehouse the 1474 settlement allowed them to build in King's Lynn is still there and well worth a visit.
Brilliant video. I always liked Edward from the little I had read about him (Dan Jones eg) and thought he did a good job amidst a turbulent period. Shame he died so young. Things might have been very different had he lived just another 7 to 8 years.
I think Edward was a severely underrated Monarch. Also to be taken into account is what would have the outcome if he had not stood his ground and married Elizabeth Of Woodville
It's insane that even the royalty of this time only had less than half of their children survive. I feel like in antiquity the style of living and urban advancements makes me think it's why you hear less of child mortality. The medieval and early renaissance in particular seem to be a perfect storm of childhood deaths. Urbanization, extremely poor city sanitation and clean water access along with limited options for a strong diet. Maybe I'm off base if someone could let me know why it seems when we learn about roman royalty and aristocrats it seems as though half the family doesnt die before they leave childhood. I'm not saying it didnt happen but damn its so ubiquitous to all these medieval profiles

IF in fact Richard did have his nephews murdered, it was due to a most unfortunate series of events, Largely instigated by the Woodville's grab for power after King Edwards death.
A great leader in both war and economics. He brought peace and stability from 1471 to 1483. Unfortunately, he married beneath his status. This caused the dynasty to end. The Woodville’s were unpopular with the old nobility and the people.
Its more like robb stark before he was king and robert after. His backstory is similar. Father was killed for trying to rule the kingdom, he rebelled and never lost a battle and he even married a woman out of love but no standing. That does not sound like cersei. plus the comparison is really apparent (Lancaster= lannister )(york=stark)
All of you are true because Martin himself stated that robb was like a young Robert. A Competent military Man and ruler. Both of them inspired by Edward IV but of course with greatly different outcomes. Plus cersei was more like Margaret of anjou which adds to Robert Edward connection. Young Edward marrying regardless of social norms adds to robb Edward connection. Not to forget Edward himself gained weight and a very social man like Robert.
@@Fiddling_while_Rome_burns Yeah, Big G drew inspiration from different historical figures and places from ancient times to the present. To name but a few: Qarth - Carthage Dothraki - Huns/Mongols/Native Americans The Wall - Hadrian's Wall First Men - Celts Aegon the Conqueror - William the Conqueror Red Wedding - Black Dinner/Glencoe Massacre Ironborn - Vikings
Well both Robert Baratheon and Robb Stark were inspired by different aspects of Edward's life. Like Robert he was born a distant relative of the Royal family, he seized the crown in a coup against a mentally unstable King and he had 2 younger brothers who had thier own ambitions for the throne. Like Robb, he was a charismatic general who won lot of battles but also angered his lords by marrying for love rather than politics hence causing him to face rebellions from former allies.
I wonder what he was really like. What Edmund was like. Richard and George. Survival was so much different then. Cecily was one of the strong women of that time. Why was his tomb opened?

I would like to suggest that you do one on Charles of Navarre, known as Charles the Bad.

Even if you believe the bogus rumour that Ed IV was illegitimate (he wasn't, but there's no convincing some people), they're still half-first cousins once removed:
1. Henry V, king of England, son of:
2. Henry IV, king of England, son of:
3. John of Gaunt, 1st duke of Lancaster & Blanche of Lancaster

The narrator's heightened RP is really exquisite. A real pleasure for ears and mind alike.
What doeas RP mean?

Very interesting... Thanks a lot....

We will.
He did have a son himself by Anne neville the kingsmakers daughter
I've never believed Richard killed the princes, I think it was more likely Lady Margaret Beaufort. Although supposedly devout, throughout history there are many examples where murder is explained away as being 'God's will' in the same today some terrorists use religion as a shield.
She was apparently so convinced it was God's will her son sit on the throne I think she was ruthless and would have found any excuse to do anything required to get him there.

I think people forget that Edward IV was Henry VIII's grandfather.

A great leader in both war and economics. He brought peace and stability from 1471 to 1483. Unfortunately, he married beneath his status. This caused the dynasty to end. The Woodville’s were unpopular with the old nobility and the people.
Woodvilles: greedy, grasping, inept at all except making enemies, at which they excelled. I read that in a marvelous book by Sharon Penman.
He’s th me real life Robert Baratheon essentially.
To name but a few:
Qarth - Carthage
Dothraki - Huns/Mongols/Native Americans
The Wall - Hadrian's Wall
First Men - Celts
Aegon the Conqueror - William the Conqueror
Red Wedding - Black Dinner/Glencoe Massacre
Ironborn - Vikings
Well both Robert Baratheon and Robb Stark were inspired by different aspects of Edward's life.
Like Robert he was born a distant relative of the Royal family, he seized the crown in a coup against a mentally unstable King and he had 2 younger brothers who had thier own ambitions for the throne.
Like Robb, he was a charismatic general who won lot of battles but also angered his lords by marrying for love rather than politics hence causing him to face rebellions from former allies.
