Here is the thing I don't understand. When testing clubs you go straight at the pin. You do very well. On the course, you always seem to be trying to hit a high draw, low fade, big slinger, very rarely straight at the pin. Question 1. Would the test be better for you if you tried many shot shapes? Question 2. Could you play a few rounds where you take your prevailing shot shape and go at the pins? I am not good at golf. I imagine it would be very fun to shape shots at will but keeping it simple when possible could result in lower scores.
This is largely because of the hole shape, lie , slope/ball above below feet, wind, and many other factors when playing on a course. I used to think this from the outside too first watching Rick and other pros like how are they so pin straight in a sim and then get to the course and end up with an 85? 😅 courses make good players have to hit a variety of shots that are rarely straight and on flat ground with no wind
It’s one thing to hit a ball on a simulator where the green is flat and the pin is in the middle, and something different when you’re on a real course with an undulating green, a back left pin with trouble left. On the first one, you could hit any shape you wanted and it’ll work out, but on the second, a draw would be the percentage play (provided you don’t overcook it). Even if it doesn’t draw, you’re still probably in good shape. But for us mere mortals who don’t always control the side spin well, a straight shot to the middle of the green probably isn’t a bad idea 😂
Rick has always tried to hit shots he has no business playing on the course. Just because a hole looks like it favors a certain shot doesn’t mean you should be trying it. Morikawa said in a recent interview he hits one shot 95% of the time. Rick would improve dramatically if he would find a shot and stick to it.
Love this review. I'm a big TM fan and love my clubs but can't help but feel that all the premium manufacturers are taking us mere mortals for a bit of a ride when it comes to the pricing of anything golf related. So much of our hard earned money is going into paying all of these already top earning tour players. When I next look at upgrading my clubs, I'll certainly be looking at manufacturers like Takomo and encouraging all my mates to do the same. Well done Rick for providing a great unbiased review as always and Takomo for producing great equipment for more reasonable prices.

Rick, great review and I agree with every word… however I think you’re giving more credit to the big manufacturers than they deserve. If you look at the Taylor Made irons, they are almost identical to the old Mizuno T-zoid to give one example. This is true of most irons these days. It’s just a newer version of an old design in my opinion. The big manufacturers just have much higher overhead costs to cover than a company like Takomo.
Since the 20th centuri basically every headshape of forged irons has been discovered. A lump of 1025 or S20C is basically not any different from another clubhead looking the same or similar. It is jus a preference, if you wanna pay twice the price or get the same performance for half the price. I have played Mizuno blades for 15 odd years, or so. But wanted something different for my 50th and could afford them only at 54 years of age. Now playing a limited edition of Miura irons PW-3 but could as well be playing my old Mizuno MP-69’s. No difference, except the Miuras are designed by Katsuhiro and The Golden Bear himself. The off-center hits with my Miura set are worse than with the Mizunos, and the feel is softer on Mizunos due the Grain Flow forging compared to Miura’s triple strike. Mizzies are around 15-hundred custom and after shaft change and all the dues, taxes and customs covered, to my liking the Miuras now at 35. But I love them.

@@grumpywizards Yes, very well. I mean they are like any other forged clubs and will eventually show small marks from being in the bag. If you just keep them clean and don't hit rocks with them, they will look good for a long time. Even then it's just cosmetic.

Put em in the bag Rick. Be the change golf needs. $650 irons play the same as $1000 irons. By the way. I feel like RnD is now on what will make people purchase, not the clubs as much. All irons have tungsten in toe/heel and thinner/wider sole for the better or worse player. Hasn’t changed for 10 years.
Just this year we've had Cobra & a few others come out with 3D printed irons and Callaway with the Apex Titanium faced hollow-body two-piece irons. Those are both new developments that show improvements over existing irons, but they do command a hefty price premium. These are the kinds of things that require research & development expense & will hopefully become cheaper & more available to a broader customer base with more time & investment.
I’m using the P7CBs in my shorter irons (770s in the longer irons). I’m a big fan. I tried out a few different shafts during my fitting to get the right peak height I was looking for. That’s the only knock I have on the DTC brands, the lack of fitting process. But I get that spending $1400+ for a set of irons is a tough hill to climb for many when you can get something pretty close for half the price.
Don’t forget to add on 20% for import duty! Takomo clubs are shipped on order from Hong Kong. Despite this extra” I still bought a set. Great clubs, great value!
I thought the 301 combo set on a whim and decided to bag them over my titleist 918 ap2s. I love the titleist but the Takomos felt amazing, looked great, and performed as good if not better. Surprisingly, even though they’re the same loft, I hit the Takomos marginally farther. Workability is what you’d expect with a blade too
I talked my nephew into tacomo's and he loves them. I already have t300s and love them. I might get a set of tac's to see which I love more-but I really do love my titleist irons.
I think it’s important to note dispersion rates, because visually in this video, your dispersion was a lot tighter with the takomo as well. That is a big part of a better players decision making also when choosing clubs.
Rick was a great honest review. My one comment is on their website they have an EXTREMELY limited choice of shafts, grips and set make up even in their "custom" section. Thanks, Bob
This is why I wish that more people knew about Maltby over Takomo. You can customize everything on your clubs (if you don't get a Pak) from grip to shaft. Basically any grip or shaft that GolfWorks sells (which is like all of them) you can add onto your clubs and they're better clubs than Takomo.
commenting cause I bugged for these videos for ages. Talked my dad into buying them back in the spring and he loves his 101s, I had been trying to get you to review them cause he watches you as well :P
Love content!! Currently playkng the 201s and absolutely love them!!!! Thinking about going 301CB. Note: turning down the music volume would be nice. Thanks again!!
Proud owner of the 101T's. The only issue I had with buying them was not being able to try them beforehand, but I think they have a pretty generous return policy if I'm not mistaken. Absolutely love them!
I just got them as well. For the reason you stated, I decided to get the heads only, then had my local fitter set me up with shafts. Interestingly, he used the TM P770 to simulate the 101T during the fitting. At sixty years old I don’t have the swing speed I used to, so he put me in Project X 5.5’s. Obviously this method almost offset the lower price point (not quite), but I absolutely love them.
The return policy if I recall correctly with my 101ts I could use the 7 iron as I felt (so I put it in my bag against my current 7iron) went to the range played a round and felt it out. I had that opportunity to decide whether or not I wanted to return them or put them in my bag
I got a fitting last week and wanted to try the P7CBs and I was super impressed. But I wanted to give the Takomos a try. Glad Rick agrees with my choice.
The one thing with Takomo was that I couldn’t find anywhere or anyone to try one beforehand. I’ve been looking for a 2iron driving iron for a fair while now and I saw that the takomo 101U was in stock in the 2iron. I thought @$119 vs the Taylormade UDI for $249 it was half the price. So ordered it and it arrived 6 days later. Great club and basically everything I expected. Goes about the same as the 16 degree hybrid I want it to replace. I will say the hybrid is slightly easier to hit off the fairway as I normally catch the 2iron a bit thin sometimes. Really good value club and have a had a fair few people offer to buy it off me for a bit more than what I paid for it
These clubs both look like great options. I bought some lightly used New Level CB 623 for about $450 from an online used store - incredible value. Don’t sleep on these DtC brands.
You can hit the 7 iron ( not the whole set) for a week for a test drive which is the normal when you get fitted. If you don’t like them you can return the whole set. You pay for the return shipping. I bought the 101T’s last month and found them to be solid clubs that aren’t as long as my PXG 0211’s but I hit them straighter. My handicap is 3.4. I’m definitely satisfied with Takomo.
Surely a consideration is how customisable the Takomo irons are. Are there many shaft options, can you get different loft and lie options, can you compare them to other irons in a fitting session? I'm guessing the answer to these questions is probably 'No' so this will be a big factor for a lot of people.
what are the chances you play a full round with the 301 CB’s in the bag? would love to see a video like that, i recently picked up the 101T’s from Takomo and have been loving them
I love these. I know its your opinion about what suits you but its great to see the big boys get a reality check on pricing. The real challenge now is for the TM sponsored youtubers to prove you wrong. Has Grant been in touch yet? 😆👏👏👏
The main reason I went for P7CB was turf interaction. On a flat synthetic mat, I bet there are hundreds of irons that will outperform P7CB in pure numbers. On course, not so much.
These are both a solid forged head in a CB type configuration. There’s not a whole lot that you can do as a manufacturer to “improve” this type of iron. The only thing I can think of is the actual forging process which might improve the feel from one to another. It’s the same with blades. So as long as you like the look of either one, they feel the same, and perform the same, why spend double the price? I just wish I would’ve paid attention to the Takomo site and bought the bronze ones. Those irons are beautiful. I hope they come out with those again. The better DTC brands are quality. Look at what Toura Golf is doing if you want to test some fantastic Japanese forgings at a reasonable price.
In the years I’ve watched Rick… the one thing that bothers me the most is he’ll do club reviews and be singing the praises of a club and sometimes say he’s getting the best numbers he’s ever gotten and what not… but he’ll put another club in the bag cuz they give him more “confidence”. He played pretty serious blades for years when he easily could’ve benefited more from a little more help from maybe an iron like a half cavity or tour cavity iron. Idk it just always seems like he chooses clubs based on looks and feel regardless of how good the numbers may be with a set that doesn’t please his eye as much… I think at times his game has suffered because of it
I’ve been playing a Haywood Golf combo set (PW-4 $700 w/DG S300 shafts) for over two years and I don’t know why anyone would pay twice the amount for in some cases an inferior set. Haywood mills their heads to with 2% of tolerance, which is better than every major manufacturer. Sure, big brands have the R&D, but DTC brands are producing high quality products as well
The vast majority of golfers out there can’t hit the ball anywhere nearly as well as you do and for that reason, I always find these videos kind of funny because the rest of the hackers out there think they’re learning something. If your handicap is above 16 none of this matters you’re happy just to hit the ball somewhat in the middle of the club face, and not worry about four or 5 yards. What a game.
Cmon Rick, these two clubs look nothing alike! Never hit to Takomo but they are nice looking. The P7CB are amazing though. I’m personally building a split set with the P770. Bought the 770 4iron as my tester and fell in love. Now just trying to figure where to split. Think I may split at the 8 with the CB for now, since that’s where the makeup of the 770 changes anyway. But those CBs are so nice to hit. They feel absolutely incredible
For the person who sticks with gear until it’s broken, the Takomo offers good value for money, it if you flip irons after one bad round, you’re best to buy a used set of P7MC. Cheaper than both new and probably not far off performance.
I'd be curious for Rick to try the Maltby's. They're in that same budget-friendly category, where you can get an 8-piece set for less than $600USD. Some other reviewers have really loved the TS1 IM (hollow head, forgiving) and the TS3 (forged cavity back).
Rick would have to personally order and pay for a set of Maltbys. That ain't happening. If it doesn't show up at the doorstep with a $0 pricetag, it likely won't get reviewed by RS. I'd love nothing more than for him to prove me wrong.
@@andybt3989I'd love to eat my own words smothered in BBQ sauce. I just dont think Maltby is even an afterthought for RS, regardless of the numerous requests to review them. I just dont see him going out of his way to order and purchase a set of Maltbys when quite frankly they dont care what he thinks and arent chasing him down for a review.
I have a set of TS3 and a set of TS4. They are both fantastic clubs. The TS3 is about as easy a club to hit as I’ve ever used. I have them in the Maltby MPF Pro Series graphite. Anyone could play those.
@@Hunter-zp5hd that's my exact setup. Like butter smothered in gravy! So smooth but stable as ever. Those shafts are so ridiculously underrated and a best kept secret for those of us who know about them.
I live in North Carolina. If I had $1250 to spend and I could buy a brand new set of Takomo irons AND play Pinehurst #2 during peak season ($600) OR I could buy the set of TaylorMade irons I go Takomo every single time! Money is money when quality is equal.
@ according what I just Googled… Pinehurst #2 (US Open host signature course) costs $595 (caddie not included) during peak season and you must be a resort guest to play.
@@clayleonard2520 not to mention, Rick quoted the price of that P7CB at 1,250 British pounds. Under the current rate of exchange, that’s about $1,612.00
I agree with Rick on this one, based on looks, which are objective, price which is hard to avoid, based on the huge saving, then performance with both delivering similar numbers. The Tacomo's have to take it overall. When the facts are looked at, there have been thousands of club design's over the many decades, so copying will happen, somewhere along the line. The biggest jump in overall improvements over the years IMHO has come from shafts, likely being the biggest contributor to increases in length and accuracy, as good fittings have proven all around the World. R&D with any new brand is expensive, if you build from the ground up, but manufacturers of iron heads, have all the designs ready and waiting, just needing the name adding to the mould, or engraved into the metal after being cast. So R&D today, may not be, what it was generations ago, they just bring A & B together and give it a name. Advertising, promo events, tour pro's, now UA-cam influencers testing, all aid in selling the products, using whichever method, proves the most efficient and effective for increasing sales.
I fancied going back to traditional lofts so I bought a set of takomo 301 cb’s. They’re not for me, not now I’m the wrong side of 50 years old. 😂 dropped a clanger there.
Problem with the Takomos is that u can't test them or be custom fitted. One shaft option only as far as i understand, although they can sell the club heads alone. These shortcomings may keep many people away. Lookswise the TMs are superb, probably the best looking on the market at present.
I’ve got a new set of P790s. Not a TaylorMade guy. But I tested everything. Couldn’t argue with the numbers. It was just a toss up between Wilson and TM. Love Wilson staff but decided to try TM as I’d never owned any.$3k and change at Club Champion. Complete BS. However I’m playing the golf of my life; but since then I have hit Takomos: they are every bit the iron of my $3k Taylor Mades. And yes, I’ve checked, and the online fittings are just as involved and accurate as the fittings you get from dudes who are just trying to make commission. Buy the Takomos. A set of golf clubs should not be $3k. 5i-Gap, btw. Basic steel shafts.
My main concern is can you get fitted for the right shaft with Tacomo? When I got fitted for my P790 I tested 3 different shafts. The third one I tested (the most stiff) was the best for me. Without testing I don't know if I get the right shaft for me with the Tacomo's
Rick does this type of review minimize the need for ‘fitting’ talked so much about for the major brands, but not available from direct to consumer brands?
I play the 301 CBs and have been singing their praises all season. Absolutely LOVE them!

AND then Rick vouched for em and theyre now 200 bucks more. All jokes aside, if they dont bump up the prices, Im sold.
I've got the 201's and they are fantastic!
Been using them for a year now. Love them.
Played my 301s all season. Love them. Had my eye on the taylormade cbs as well. This review makes me feel like I went the right way
I talked my nephew into tacomo's and he loves them.
@@CinemaSteveoooh. Goes off to check Maltby.
That's why they also offer to buy the heads only
@CinemaSteve good day, ive hit the maltby ts3 and they were very impressive and they were very easy to shape. I would love to try the takomo 101t's
They're actually 650 dollars which this morning equates to £503.74. Absolute steal. I have the 101t's and love them.
commenting cause I bugged for these videos for ages. Talked my dad into buying them back in the spring and he loves his 101s, I had been trying to get you to review them cause he watches you as well :P
Not surprised at the results to be fair. The Takomo's in all their forms are indeed great clubs.
I have the 201's and find them fantastic.
Glad you are posting these. I am really really considering doing the Tacomo CB irons
I got a fitting last week and wanted to try the P7CBs and I was super impressed. But I wanted to give the Takomos a try. Glad Rick agrees with my choice.
I got the 101T last year and it was the best investment I've made in my game. More consistent ball flight, more birdie opportunities
The head to head we needed!
The Taylor Made remind me of those fantastic MacGregor M685 forged i played when I was younger...
I use Taylormade but can see a set of Takomo in my future especially if they release more of the copper irons. Rick your iron play is superb right now
Would like to see you review them on the course. Play 2 balls with the different sets. Will be interesting to see.
Only draw back is you can't test them out before you buy them. And I'm still debating on purchasing them. Great review 👏
Sponsored tour pros don’t get to chose their brand. I do and own the Takomo 301 Combo. Best irons I’ve ever played.
Surely a consideration is how customisable the Takomo irons are. Are there many shaft options, can you get different loft and lie options, can you compare them to other irons in a fitting session? I'm guessing the answer to these questions is probably 'No' so this will be a big factor for a lot of people.
Thanks for this, I have been wondering for a while. Keep up the good work.
what are the chances you play a full round with the 301 CB’s in the bag? would love to see a video like that, i recently picked up the 101T’s from Takomo and have been loving them
Comparison Mizuno vs Takomo would be interesting, too
I love these. I know its your opinion about what suits you but its great to see the big boys get a reality check on pricing. The real challenge now is for the TM sponsored youtubers to prove you wrong. Has Grant been in touch yet? 😆👏👏👏
Ive had Taylor made, Titlist, and for the price Takomo CB are insanely good. Id say they feel similar to the 2019 P7- MBs.
I've been playing the P7mc's and love them. But strongly considering the Takomo 301cb's for my next set. Especially since I know my specs now.
Can you test the 101t irons please Rick? They're the ones I'm interested in getting! Thanks 👍
I touched a set of those Takomos the other day and the amount of fingerprints they collect is insane.
You should try maltby irons! Ts1 IM ts1 ts2 ts3
Lovely to hear cheap can come out on top
Sure, big brands have the R&D, but DTC brands are producing high quality products as well
Have to give Rick props, swing is looking much better, especially at the top 👌
The vast majority of golfers out there can’t hit the ball anywhere nearly as well as you do and for that reason, I always find these videos kind of funny because the rest of the hackers out there think they’re learning something. If your handicap is above 16 none of this matters you’re happy just to hit the ball somewhat in the middle of the club face, and not worry about four or 5 yards. What a game.
And to think I was looking at the Takomo a year ago, but went for Miura because I couldn't find anywhere to try out the Takomo! 🤯
I had the p790s .. sold them and went to takomo s 101 great clubs at half the price ..
For the person who sticks with gear until it’s broken, the Takomo offers good value for money, it if you flip irons after one bad round, you’re best to buy a used set of P7MC. Cheaper than both new and probably not far off performance.
I've been considering the 201s to replace my Taylormade Sim irons. These videos are helping me potentially make that decision.
@@jymferrier I swing titleist ap-1 712 they are older . I’m thinking this very same thing . Would mind just a little bit forgiveness .
switched from titleist ap3 to 201's. Great clubs! wont regret it
Would love to see a head-to-head of the Takomos and Sub70s
I recommend checking out the Maltby (especially the TS1 im and the TS3)
I got my JPX919 Tour 5-P brand new still in the plastic for $600 two years ago, sometimes you just wait till the next model is out
Can't compare the 301s but my 101s are beautiful things. I really cannot argue with what they offer.
@@AZstu324he has before gone and and bought sets and then given them away.
When can we see a Hogan review? Would love your opinion! Keep up the great work, Rick!
I live in North Carolina. If I had $1250 to spend and I could buy a brand new set of Takomo irons AND play Pinehurst #2 during peak season ($600) OR I could buy the set of TaylorMade irons I go Takomo every single time! Money is money when quality is equal.
Question: a round at Pinehurst costs $600?
@ according what I just Googled… Pinehurst #2 (US Open host signature course) costs $595 (caddie not included) during peak season and you must be a resort guest to play.
@@clayleonard2520 wow! Not that I would ever be playing it, but if I ever did pay $600 plus for a round,…I’d better shoot the round of my life.
@@clayleonard2520 not to mention, Rick quoted the price of that P7CB at 1,250 British pounds. Under the current rate of exchange, that’s about $1,612.00
@ true.
Thanks Rick, great job.
I use Takomo and love them
Always great videos rick!
If Tacomo put together half a dozen fitting centres in the UK and offered more shaft options, they would really shake up the market imo
Need to see a full round with the Takomos, see how you go
I agree with Rick on this one, based on looks, which are objective, price which is hard to avoid, based on the huge saving, then performance with both delivering similar numbers.
The Carry numbers match to the loft change. But the Takomo clearly spins more.
I wish Takomo had a complete set like the Callaway Edge.
Good review!!!! Should compare takomo vs ram.
Love this honest review! 😊
The other factor is shaft options. Would seriously consider the Takomo’s but I need graphite shafts.
Would love to see the sub 70 models thrown into this comparison
If I was a forged iron player, I’d save the money and get Takoma irons! I play cast for the durability since I can’t replace them every few years.
