I Bought a $6 PCIe x16 Riser Cable For GAMING.... Was it a MISTAKE?

  • I bought the cheapest PCIe Riser cable off amazon for $6... and it didn't even say what exact spec it was... It looked like it was x16, and upon booting it up it recognised it as PCIe 3.0. However what we drop it down to PCIe 2.0 x4? Will it stutter or drop performance in games like Fortnite and Apex Legends? Let's find out.

I had one of those too and I got a couple crashes at first. I read about how much expensive riser cables focus their marketing on their good shielding.
So I wrapped the cheap riser in aluminium tape and it actually totally helped.

I am also planning to do the same. Use a copper wire to wrap around the aluminium and ground it to case.

I'm really loving these series of videos from Japan, Bryan. You look much happier and relaxed. I had a question about the CR 5 56 you are using now. Is there anything special you look for when selecting these water dispersants? For example I've been told WD 40 can create a sort of residue over time. Have you seen something similar over long periods. Also, are you using break cleaner for the initial clean because you don't have the ultrasonic cleaner with you.

    • @techyescity
      @techyescity  2 роки тому +4

WD40 seems is a little too thick, I have just tried a heap of them and kept going with the best over time. At the moment I don't need to use the ultrasonic, I will see what I can do when something comes along that is that dirty.

I was working for computer repair shop, and we had a lot of miners com with this type of riser cables back when people were minning with r9 280s and r9 290s . The cables worked just fine, only problems with them were quality control, bad soder joints etc. But you can check for that before using it. I remember that some of the r9 290x's used more than 75W from the PCI slot, and the cables handled it just fine.

Perfekt, with that cable you can install a fullsizecard outside a small form factor computer and just connect an extra PSU, anway it would be fun if you tested a BEAST riser in a laptop and connect both with USB and min pci-e. Thanx and greetings from Sweden.

I got a similar cable several years ago from Newegg. However, mine also has a four-pin Molex connector for extra voltage . I was going to uae it in a Lenovo computer that you could only install a single slot video card in . Was going to side mount the video card, but I ended up putting a pci video card in instead...

Most trippy thing about this channel is watching it tired and seeing the prices. I'm from the UK and when i see Australian dollars or the Yen i flip out thinking whow that's expensive. Reality is often different ofc, its normally costing more here due to taxes and stuff (although lately it seems we are roughly in the same ball park)

Ive used these cables before from amazon in some custom made itx cases. They performed fine but they dont handle repetitive bending. Idk if the wires inside are fragile or the solder joint but I had a couple break during my prototyping phase because i had to take the pc apart several times and the cable broke.

Have a similar cheap PCIE riser cable but in black that I've been using since the last 4 years, just once I was getting video related GPU issues and thought that the riser had got spoilt due to bending and stopped using it, but it turned out that the connector had got residue on it (i live in hot humid rainforest) so cleaning the connector solved it and never had issues since, just be sure to attach it well even slight disconnection will give you video errors

Had couple of those messing signal on pcie 3. They had poor soldering and some of signal lines were shorting or not connected at all.
If mobo and gpu handshake on pcie 4.0 those cables keep messing up signal and you can't even go to bios to change without plugging gpu on mobo. I had premium pcie 3 cable and it kept preventing boot every time after updating bios. Kinda nasty when making hard tube watercooling. Even on pcie 3.0 with 5950X it had stuttering in game and required me to raise io voltage on cpu a little.
Buying that 90$ pcie 4.0 cable made life easy and Louge one might do pcie 5.0 too. So high quality on that one.

How do you support the GPU in the case other than by the PCIE bracket though? .... Coz most cases with vertical mount kits have the Riser fixing to the case at the bottom to support the weight.... I wouldn't like to mount say a big triple fan GPU that way without supporting it at the bottom.

In my experience with a Gigabyte 2060 Super Windforce OC (2 slot thick, 3 fans):
+ Looks better vs original orientation.
+ Doesn't heat up M.2 drive on second slot of mobo
    - GPU core runs a bit hotter (3-5°C in my case)
    - Thermal pad oil leakage may occur after some time.
So after 2 years of having my card vertically, it starts to leak oil. I took the card apart to check and the oil came from the thermal pads. They are still in good condition and moist, not dried so still usable. But because I don't want a mess in my PC, I put the card back in horizontal position and no more leak. So imo if your card has cheap pads, keep it in horizontal position for cooler temp and no worries of leakage.

from my understanding on the bandwidth stuff, the riser will be good up to 6500XT or RTX3050, anything further will experience some bottleneck. It's still good for current generation budget range cards, or else you might want to up a bit for PCIE 3.0 X8/X16 ones, and do take note only use cards that's powered by PSU and not from the PCIE slot itself, don't put high hope on the cable quality.

Question, I have an alienware laptop from 2015 And i notced last week that both the CPU fan and GPU fan randomly stopped working. On startup they spin just fine and on shutdown they spin up just fine. Also HWinfo is the ONLY program that will actually read the fans and allow me to manually control them just fine aswell. Without HWinfo though they dont spin AT all in windows, laptop will heat up to 70c at idle and i gotta shut down. I have4 tried everything, i took laptop apart cleaned the fans double checked the connection and Reinstalled windows, all the firmware drivers ect. Tried 2 graphics cards, a supreme RTX 3070 TI and a EVAGA RTX 3070 FTW3 (which out ran the TI by 7% in benchmarks, both overclocked) got same result with all the version 4 riser cables.
