Rally drivers are incredibly skilled, they have to be able to drive any road surface in any type of weather condition flat out :D

The Finnish F1 driver Kimi Rakkonen was also a rally driver . He also had a wonderful dry sense of humour though not seen to smile that much and was given the nickname "iceman".

Rally is the most intense vehicle driven sport ever conceived in my opinion. Formula One drivers drive at insane speeds around tracks - so fast that no other car could keep up, on a track.
But to gun it through a forest full throttle that you've never seen before, relying not only on the accuracy of your driving but also the precision and timing of your co-drivers call outs - that takes a big hefty bag of stones.
Going into a corner the opposite way first is called a pendulum turn. Swinging the wrong way first, (at just the right point in the road, ahead of the turn itself), builds up more angular rotation speed for when you do need it (in the turn itself). This is used in especially tight turns. You utilise all available width of the road ahead of the turn, for when there isn't enough room in the turn itself. It also has a secondary benefit scaring the hell out of uninitiated passengers. A Scandinavian flick is slightly different, and less aggressive. A scandy flick is used just to unsettle the car's balance, to make it more willing to break loose when you do turn in the direction of the corner. The flick in a scandy flick isn't actually skidding. You can combine the two if you need to - first flick the car the right way, then pendulum (drift) the wrong way, then finally drift the right way round the corner.

Something like this happened at the world rally championship 2 (maybe 3) years ago.
They pulled the car out of the lake, fixed it over night and finished the rally on the podium (not sure if they won).
When they went up to collect the medals the mechanics gave the driver/codriver snorkles.

Great video, but soothing isn't the word I would use.
As for the comment about it being the best form of racing, I would have to agree.
It is more relatable.
I am not saying we do (or should) drive like the fearless experts (mostly!) in the videos, but it is MORE like the driving conditions we would experience than F1, Nascar, etc.
(Must admit, that when I am driving those country roads up in the hills I am doing so at a more sedate pace and usually looking for somewhere to stop to eat my picnic!)
Hi Connor - I have a mate who use to own a printing frim - he did printing for a guy who did club rallies in the UK and he had an Opel Corsa - my friend did the printing for free and when I asked why he said it was because he got the roof panel and then showed me a picture from a magazine with the car rolling and the roof in clear display - you couldn't buy that advertising lol
The Corsa was replaced by a Mazda 323 4wd and the owner took me for a spin..........Jesus I have never drifted around a roundabout nor experienced anything like it - total respect
The difference between how impressive rally is to formula one, personally I’d say rally is an impressive display on instinctive driving and knowing how to handle conditions by feeling the road. Wheereas formula one is more calculated and precision driving as well as strategic driving (how hard to hit your tires etc). Not to say drivers can’t do both, many formula one drivers have (unsurprisingly) become successful rally drivers

you underestimate how calculating and precise rally drivers have to be if they don't want to wrap themselves around a tree. it takes a lot of preparation and they always have a co-driver to predict the turns, but what you need most when you're racing through the forest at 200km/h is huge balls. the environment changes minute by minute and the incredible adaptability you have to have is unbelievable. Weather, animals, rocks kicked up by the previous driver, spectators, these are just a few variables that can change at any moment. formula 1 is of course exciting, but nothing like rally.

@@MsMigi1 you’re misunderstanding me, I said rally is more about instinct and adaptable driving than formula 1. And formula 1 is more precise and precalculated than rally. That doesn’t mean rally isn’t incredibly precise and pre calculated and that’s doesn’t mean formula 1 isn’t incredibly adaptive and intuitive. It’s just they’re more so than one another
There is actually less instinct involved in modern rallyeing than it seems. Instinct is a reaction, not a proactive action.
I remember years ago when they meassured reaction times and th reaction times it would need for rallye drivers if they reacted instictively.
With the speeds they are going, they aren't reacting to what happens, they are proactively already doing things in anticipation. (They look way forward and with the things the codriver tells them, anticipate the effect of bumps and ditches ect. and actually "react" before any human could.
That's why some of the accidents look so stupid.
I have used the word modern, but this already was the case for group B cars, so basically at the start of the 80's.

The days of group B was the best in rallying I have ever seen. Used to go to lots of them, always got a buzz when those 600hp monsters flew past.

-The incredible jump at 1:23 and 2:33 you were so stunned about is from the finnish 1000 lakes rallye (I think the stage is called ouninpohja, and there were marks on the side of the road and the cars were going over 40m in the air. Not the fastest way, but the most entertaining way. Like colin McRae once said: "If in doubt, flat out")
-The Audi with fire from it's side: yes, it has a sidepipe, and thats fire from the exhaust. Pretty common for the cars of that aera.

Well, who has seen a F1 car demolishing a brick wall... They usually only destroy the lollipop man, tire stacks or each others cars, so less impressive 😁
You may enjoy HILLCLIMB as well, it's similar to rally in that they go point to point rather than in circles, 1 by 1, and it's timed across the run rather than them racing actively the other cars. Pikes Peak is one in the USA if you want to try to find a full run onboard video of that.

Yea but more often than not hillclimbs are on tarmac. To me, rally on other terrains like gravel, mud, or snow are more interesting than tarmac rally

Back in the 80's for example the story with Michelle Moutons record in 1985 with the Quattro. (still completely on gravel back then)
In 84 She and a norwegian driver were the first europeans to compete.
And as she wasn't familiar with the track, she and co driver Fabriza Pons were going up the hill together, like in any rallye.
Despite minor engine problems with the injection system at higher altitudes, they won their class and came second over all!
Imagine that: the europeans show up with something that isn't completely purpose built for that specific race, put a lady in the drivers seat and one in the passenger seat. They weren't expected to be successfull by the "locals".
And in their first attempt the Ladies beat everybody but 1 guy.
Typical germans as the Audi crew were, they calculated after the race that without the weight of her co driver, the car could have been fast enough to take the overall win, even with the engine problems.
And we are talking about a relatively lightweight Lady.
1985 they were back at the mountain with an updated injection system and ditched the standard 80L fuel tank for a smaller one, but due to an incident in the training session Michelle Mouton wasn't allowed to drive the Audi to the start line and the mechanics had to push the car by hand.
(If i remember correct, In the last training session she started with spinning tires, and she got fined for that. 500$ in money, and they prohibited her from driving anywhere outside of the race itself.)
Making her angry didn't have the effect they expected. This time being alone in the car, and going flat out in sections she hadn't done before, she beat everyone that day, setting a new overall record in her second participation in the race!
That's the reason i value her record in 85 higher than Mr. Unsers record the year after, as he was way more familiar with the road than her. ("an unser always wins" and "unser mountain" were common sayings)

About the last clip with the Porsche: it was a Dutch division 5 car, with kind of a diy redneck gt3 engine conversion, and his half-assed throttle cable setup got stuck wide open...
That white yellow car was an ur Quattro, the most successful Rally car in the history. And many followed their four wheel drive since!!!!

the last crash: the throttle of the porsche got stuck wide open, you can hear it before hitting the wall. both driver and co driver where fine. ( a freind works at the rally team that maintains that car)
Walter Röhrl once said, if you don't have dead flies sticking to your driver's side window you've been going too slow through the corners.
If you wanna be really impressed check out some Gruppe B / Group B rally cars when it was still completely unregulated. When the car designers could go all out with absolutely everything.
Those cars were absolute monsters for their time, and they could even compare to many race cars of today in terms of their performance because most cars today have some sorts of regulations limiting them to some degree or other. Basically Group B was a group of cars where the engineers and designers were allowed to show what was technically possible, damn if it was feasible for standard applications.

Colin McCrae is a proper hero of mine, sadly taken too soon but 1 of the most naturally gifted drivers ever to have lived. As he always said 'if in doubt flat out'. If you can see some on board footage of him it's incredible.
i totally agree with you, Rally drivers are some of the best race drivers in the world, and you can use it in real life, although i won't recommend it ;)
About the question on fans getting hurt - I'm 75 so if we got hurt it was our fault and the world wasn't full of 'liability lawyers'. I enjoy these races more because the technology and engineering was just beginning.

You might try watching Swedish rally volvos, the commitment of these guys in big old volvos is worth a look, I would say that all world championship drivers are more or less on a par with one another, however it would be harder for an f1 driver to do rallies as the commitment to pace notes takes a while to learn
Rally drivers from the '80 with the infamous Group B are the best drivers of the History. No one can matches their skills and "courage".

The biggest difference between F1 drivers or similar, is that they have all the time in the world (in theory ofc), to learn every corner, bump, chamber, and where they can accelerate, when to brake, and when they can pass. It's all about learning how to peak performance in a track, depending on the time of a day, weather, etc. It's like grinding in a videogame. Whereas, rally drivers go in blind; they have to trust the pacing notes of their co-driver, and kind of make a mental image of how the road is gonna look ahead of them, and judge at what speed they can go. That's why in some of those turns, as you mention, the car enters the turn already sideways; the driver knows that ahead there's gonna be a turn, more or less how tight or open it's gonna be, whether or not they can cut the corner, or stay as tight as possible. The same with those jumps; what amazes me the most is that they judge how fast they can hit them, and how to distribute the weight of the car before hitting air, to ensure they don't damage the car on the landing. They're honestly beasts that drive at crazy speeds on roads that personally I wouldn't go faster than 20 mph.
Oh btw, that turn that you mentioned when they turn into the opposite direction of the turn, before shifting into the turn, it's called a Scandinavian flick. The simplest explanation is that they do that flick to shift the weight of the car so it helps them take tight turns as fast as possible.

Scandi flick is a minor turn to initiate a drift in the opposite direction of the initial wheel input.
The drifting that is already pointing the right direction when going into the corner in this video are pendulum drifts, not a Scandi flick, though they initiate some with Scandi flicks.

When a driver turns in the opposite direction to the upcoming corner and then steers into the corner, this is to help swing the car around with it's momentum.

If you want to learn how to control cars and take them to the limit, rally school is definitely the way to go.
As an American you will probably not know that majority of these cars have Small 4 cylinder engines
The driver do what the guy beside him (mapreader) tells, because you turn the car before you actually see the turn, thats howe fast they go. talk about trust!

5:16 that is the power of Japanese cars. Mitsubishi , one of the best brands for rally cars . Subaru, Mistubishi and Nissan were and maybe still are a force in Rally competitions.
Its just that in rally you need to be versatile cose you drive everywere but in formula 1 the intensity is just crazy.. like you need to be like cristiano ronaldo to actually be able to drive a formula 1 car
Lots of comments comparing Rally and F1 but they are really impossible to compare. It would take an F1 driver a long time to learn pace notes, the different styles of car control needed for all surfaces. It would take a rally driver a long time to build up the consistency needed to compete in F1 and a long time to develop the neck muscles needed to complete a race distance. Luckily we get to watch both of these impressive sports rather than having to choose.

The top level NASCAR is very deceptive in that it looks much easier than it actually is. Very few drivers switching into NASCAR perform terribly well at it. Formula 1 is incredibly difficult, and usually takes drivers a long time to get in physical shape to cope with the G-forces involved. Plus even "bad" Formula 1 drivers have typically won everything they raced at until entering Formula 1. I mean F1 is littered with previous F2 and F3 champions, struggling to keep an F1 seat. Rally looks very difficult, and that's because it is, but the real challenge is it's far more dangerous than modern F1 or NASCAR. It's not like hundreds of miles of trees lining a rally course are even covered in bubble wrap. Some of the footage in the video were Group B rally cars, and the entire class of cars was eventually banned from competition as "unsafe at any speed". The question of which is the hardest or best driver is hard to answer, as each sport is highly specialized and it's like comparing cricketers and baseball players as to "who is the best batsman?"
Unquestionably rally drivers are the best drivers in the world… Touring car drivers are the best racers In the world. I suppose I would give Formula One the award for the most consistent speed.

3:10 - They only stop if the engine is on fire, not for a broken axle.
3:40 - You know what the driver and co-driver are most worried about at that point? Not the car, and not drowning. They're worried about the pace notes getting wet.
5:49 - If you haven't heard it yet, rallies allow fans to get involved, to move cars out of ditches, turn them around, help drivers, etc. The fans are willing and they don't favour any one driver, they help everyone.
7:43 - The drivers love the snow rallies, but not for the show. Any snow that kicked up falls back down in less than a minute. The dust on dirt rallies hangs in the air for ages and blinds everyone behind the leader.
Rally is about the extreme motorsport while Formulas are about traditional speed racing
At the end of the day Rally fans are really there for the sport not who is better or who will win and the drivers are there for the extreme adrenaline too

You can not compare f1 to rally racing, it's like comparing figure skating to ice hockey because there both on skates, both are completely different and different skill sets, both are incredible to watch and very talented drivers
To me Rallying beats straightline dragracing every day of the year.

Throttle stuck wide open, there's nothing those brakes could have done...
@@henkverzeijl1525 The smoke you see is from the rubber burning due to the friction with the asphalt. The throttle did close and the brakes locked the wheels.
@@tntfreddan3138 I actually know for a fact that this crash happened because his throttle stuck... If you watch and listen closely, the brakes are already locked up before the throttle snaps shut again; rear wheels didn't lose traction and keep pushing for too long. Throttle eventually closes when he hits the initial curb, but too late by then to do anything about it...
You know what's the funniest part of this video. It's that the worst and most embarrassing crashes are from Dutch rallies 😂 Dutch are terrible rally drivers lol.
Imagine if they had camera phones back in the 80’s. Health and safety hardly existed, so many near deaths would occur

Yes you’re right about the driving but the 1970s and 80s or the absolute Gorden period Of rallying there was legislation but not too much it’s a frightening video to watch but if you ever get a chance watch the killing years very sad a lot people lost their lives with the group B Championships But some of the most amazing rallying you’ll ever see and it’s really selfish to say but I do really miss this period of racing see you Michael

Cant watch circle driwing unless its big crashes or trucks driwing hard on pavement. So u there americans have not produced last fifty years single WRC driwers but still u bash our motorsports. For rallying, have a look at Group B rallying from the 1980's. Meanest rally cars ever to grace the stages. The Group B cars were outlawed at the end of 1986 for being to fast and dangerous.

Too me it sounds like they goin full tit on the highest gear right there ... the ratio may not be set to highspeed but they sure do 170Kmh or so...
