- Aarvam team has kept its promise! This week, we bring to you a special episode. On September 8, the people of Kerala celebrated the most important festival - Onam. Saurabh, Akshita, and Noopur visited Kerala House, which is the official state mission of Government of Kerala in New Delhi. There was a Pookalam (rangoli made with flowers) competition that was organized at Kerala House. Many teams participated in it, and Akshita and Noopur spoke to team members and found out more about Onam and how Malayalis celebrate the festival.
The festival of Onam celebrates the harvest season in Kerala, marking the homecoming of King Mahabali. The festival also commemorates the appearance of the Vamana avatar of Vishnu. At the celebration at Kerala House, people welcomed Lord Mahabali with Chenda (percussion).
Post that, Saurabh, Akshita, and Noopur enjoyed a Kerala thaali which is called a Sadhya. Akshita explained what each of the items in the Sadhya is.
At the end, members of Aarvam team wished a happy Onam to everyone in their mother tongues. Noopur also sang a Gujarati song.

I celebrated ONAM here from last two years
Its extremely refreshing to see Saurabh Sir's childlike curiosity about the food, the related myths, cultural and religious connotations attached to that. This vivacity is so contagious that one actually feels like it is all happening in real time in front of them. It is such a breath of fresh air to see a journalist having such a twinkle in his eyes. Many congratulations to the team and all the best wishes.

I have been living in Chennai for the past 7 years. Being a Fauji kid and the wife of a railway officer, festivities of different states has been an intrinsic part of my life.
Love the way each aspect of Onam has been covered. I have not missed a single episode of Aaravam. Akshita’s enthusiasm for every small detail is commendable.
Sourabh and Akshita as hosts compliment each other so well.
A humble request, please keep this show only about the 5 states of South India.

I love the Kannadigas,,. They are proud of their own language and will never forget Kannada or other languages of Karnataka even if they go outside... Unlike outside Kerala Malayaless who forget their language and don't even take the effort to read or write it. These Mallus cannot even speak proper Malayalam but can speak the language of the land where they settled... It's so shameful ! Moreover communist-CITU mafia in Kerala has destroyed the economy, industry & jobs so people started to migrate to other places several decades ago.

I'm from uttrakhand proper hill station ..But lived alone with a Kerala family in Kerala for one month when I was 12 years old.. and that too In Kalenzoor and Allepi (with a muslim family)During the SARGOTSAVA festival ..By the CPI kerala..it was great ...I miss that...
Amazing Onam celebration. The idea of Onam itself is Unity where all community celebrate without any bar. It's basically celebrated as the rains subsedes and the flowers start blooming, the earth becomes green and glowing and the first crop ready for harvest.
I am so glad to see different people belonging to different cultures, enjoying together.
Really my country is so beautiful and great. I love my India and all indians.

it was quite wonderful, though I live here for a few years, still, we celebrate Onam in a colourful way. this festival is only one festival celebrates across keralites irrespective of religion. thanks for sharing once again
Muslims and Christians did not celebrate this until 1961, when the state festival was declared. Only after that, a more secular colour to Onam was given. And it started celebrating as a Pan-Malayalee festival. Schools and offices then started celebrating it as a cultural festival. This was done with dubious intent to whitewash its Hindu nature. I was in Pondicherry for a reasonable time and spent my years with mostly Malayalee friends. And, there I saw most Onam was celebrated by all. All of them wore Munda and set sarees for photo sessions. Pookalam, payasam and games would also be there. But, when I personally asked them what they do in their homes, many Muslim friends said they don't celebrate in their homes. They don't make pookalam, and neither they have the grand sadhya at home. On the contrary, all my Hindu friends told us something about the festival they used to do at home. South Mallus said their sadhyas are only veg, but some from Mallapuram said they have non-veg too at their sadhya.

It was indeed a wonderful episode. And, Sourav rightly pointed out the distinct feature about North and South Indian. I like both. Sometimes you need to do what he tried to do (the new thali ) if it does not create chaos. I think Akshita mam became too serious at that time.

हमाये जहां एक कहावत है कि और जगह के सौ और पचौरीपुरा के नौ, सौरभ भईया बिन नौ लोगों में से ही हैं। जब पातर बैठ जाती है तो जे पहले ही पुड़ी पुआ धरवाए लेते हैं और फिर पुड़ी और पुआ पहले ते ही टोर के धर लेत हैं, सब्जी आत ही खाएवे में लग जातें, और बाल्टी भर भर के सब्जी लगती है इन्हें।
