It is for security reasons, that (i believe the word is carjacking?) when you get in the car, that from the other side no one can steal bags or something else. Yes you should be able to configure it how to behave on first unlock

And this is on the medium battery... with the 77 kWh we can probably expect about 510-520 km of mixed range and about 360-380 km at 130 (probably 400+ at 110), at a price below 40k with incentives, which is fantastic!
I was looking for this video! Right on time. I drove an ID.3 Plus today and what I noticed is that it is full of software bugs. great to see all these incremental improvements across and between manufacturers. As expected the ramp up is rapid in the early phase and will presumably plateau sometime in the future, though a long way to go yet....ICE had a 100 years of improvement and still going..
Would love to see a topographical overlay of your test routes - showing elevation gain & descent. In BC, we have a lot of mountain passes and consumption can be pretty surprising - even alarming - at times. You're tests are great research for those of us deciding on our next EV (thank you), but knowing the elevations would be a nice addition for comparison.
Test Test he kinda implies that VW left these things out to get more range, but it simply to reduce cost. The small electronic gimmicks in modern cars have basically no impact on range at all
@@reinerw.1158 The main reason why I'm so excited is the cost but if you say that all of those fancy electronics won't impact battery life then that something to think about.. I looked at the price and still price.. Not far from model 3 price wise
Hi Björn. We also made a 1000 km Challenge in Germany. We had the ID 3 Max with 20 inch wheels. We needed 11 h 15 minutes. 40 % of the Autobahn where under Road construction, also we had a very cold night with 5 degrees. We had to drive 1015 km for 1000 km on Odometer. 23,1 kwh/100 km average consumption were displayed. Also we are fighting against closed backdoors ;-) But one thing we're not happy about the drumbrakes: at one point we had to made a heavy brake from 160 to 70 km/h und the drumbrakes are vibrated very hard! And we thought, the car will never stops. The whole car was vibrating a lot! This is s...this situation we have on our Livestream.
@don storm you are not living in Germany? Very normal on German Autobahn. My Ioniq and my Kona don't have this behavior. Sorry man. But don't fell in love with a car, where the brakes a like in a 40 years old VW Käfer. So we are very disappointed from the drumbrakes in the ID3
VW seats are deceptive I find. We had a base eGolf for a while and the fabric (I like fabric over leather mind) seats looked flat, hard and uninviting. But it had lumbar support and they were surprisingly comfortable! I assume the higher trims will come with the just as comfortable, although nicer looking, bolstered seats like you have in the higher versions of the golf.
All the infotainment system is very tricky. Not so user friendly...and it should show the battery %. Hope VW will fix it soon, because i like it very much
Regarding consumption: please be reminded that on a plain vanilla highway drive there is not much recuperation so yo should see values similar to an e-Golf for example. The picture is different on a up-and-down the hills drive or stop-and-go: there you have lot of recuperation. Because the ID. 3 has the motor in the back and is back powered the recuperation is less efficient than with a front wheel driven car like the e-Golf or Kona. So you should see a higher consumption for the ID. 3 versus e-Golf or Kona by principle. Wind resistance and tire dimensions may add to the difference. Regarding SW bugs and usability improovements: I wouldn't expect much! VW has missed the chance to involve experienced e-Golf drivers to develop the ID. 3 UI (both SW and HW) up to now and the current state of the SW and touch usability is miserable, as well as the speech interface is awkwardly slow with an obviously underpowered processing unit.
timemachine_194 There is nothing “American” about the Model 3’s dimensions, unless you think the BMW 3-Series is also “American” in its dimensions. The Model 3 is simply, like the 3-series, a bigger car than the ID.3, which is the size of the VW Golf. If that suits your needs better, it’s good that VW is providing an EV alternative for that segment of the market.
timemachine_194 Sorry, but these tired old stereotypes don’t serve any purpose. The fact is that the dimensions of the Model 3 are very similar to a BMW 3-Series. Are you contending that the BMW 3-series is an “American” car? The ID-3 is a smaller car that fills the same segment of the market as the VW Golf. There is plenty of space in the market for EVs of different sizes. Different people have different priorities, and I really don’t see the point of this kind of condescension about other brands based on national stereotypes.
timemachine_194 You’re still dancing around the point that you are trying to cast the Model 3 as some sort of stereotypically “American” car when the fact is that it is not that dissimilar to a car like the BMW 3-Series. Which is very much a mass market car, by the way. And there is nothing “American” about sportier and more powerful cars either - performance is basically what BMW, Mercedes and Audi have long emphasised and strongly utilised in their branding for DECADES for crying out loud! So please, enough with the BS peddling stereotypes about “American” cars. And the truck market has nothing to do with the sedan market either.
timemachine_194 It’s a mass market car in many countries, not just the US. But apparently you are determined to perpetuate tired old national stereotypes to satisfy your smug sense of superiority over those silly “Americans”. And let’s just pretend that Germans don’t care about performance and speed despite three of the major German brands emphasising performance in their marketing, including in Europe.
@@marcel151 The Passat GTE is pretty cool as well tbh, but I think in the near future (5y) the hybrid passenger vehicle will become a rarity because it's more expensive and unnecessary.
No back up camera? Back up cameras have been mandatory in the USA since May 2018 and will become mandatory in Europe in year 2021, or at least rear detection system. Does this version of ID3 have rear detection system of any kind?
I got a feeling that vag made the mistake of making the new skoda nicer than this vw - so I look forward to hear you compare the 2 when you get to test the skoda
This is such an important car for the VW group. I hope the long wait has been worth it. I think the interior looks a bit cheap, I don't like gloss back plastics in cars, but that's just my taste. Exterior looks good. I run a BMW i3, good car, but not perfect - main criticism is the excessively hard ride, the VW looks to be much better in this respect. However the i3 interior is a lovely place to be.
Interesting that it is using about twice the power output at 120km/h than 90km/h, you would expect the air drag to be about 1.8 times higher so with some other friction or inefficiency that makes sense. I stuck some numbers into a spreadsheet and the average speed allowing for a charging stop so you could cover the same distance at 120km/h as you could without charging at 90km/h is very sensitive to the charge rate. Using 90% charge at 90km/h to cover 375 km is the same as running at 120km/h if you spend an hour charging stop (I allowed 6 minutes extra for manoeuvres and hookup), that is an average of 27kW to put just enough in for the range needed. If you can get an average 50kW charge you average 100km/h saving 26 minutes all together, but of course still need to buy that extra 25kWh to do it. It turns out that providing you have the rapid chargers then running at 120km/h is quicker overall, but it is going to cost quite a bit more to save 25 to 40 minutes.
Great review. Can you review the newer i3 please? I believe they have tweeked the new 2020 model fir improved efficiency, jut like the new mini. I am obtaining 128Wh/km from my new std i3 after 2400km
Hi Björn, You said" Ioniq go home" but that is not true! Ioniq is still the most efficient EV in the market. With 90 kms its about 105 wh per km which I tested myself. Greetings and keep up the good work.
Thanx I saw this car in the showroom, the metalsheets behind c-block are thin and also too much light when you sit in the car, everythings starts, 2 screens and so on. Also you sit much up in the back. But its a nice car anyway.
The range seems to be twice as much compared to the e-Golf 2020 which im driving daily now! I drive 100km per hour and the e-Golf usually goes maximum of 130km of range. On a normal\cold weather with some wind. Typical weather for West\Nord Europe.
I don't like the look all black, especially from the front :D It's a bit weird, because the design doesn't change just because of the color haha :D but looks bit weird. Gotta agree on the polestar comment too, the center console is basically a red flag to everyone who needs some space for his legs like me xD
Thank for making all of these videos.. Now I even know thst lighter wheels are pointless.. Its the rubber or rolling resistance and aerodynamics of the car!
100kg more than the main competitor the Model 3 SR+, probably because of sound proofing. A good investment of the 100kg if you ask me. The mission was to beat the price of the Model 3 SR, mission success for VW. But missing a supercharger network for long distances. Shame... Next big thing for common people will be ID.1 v. "Model 2" from Giga Berlin 2023. Also: Don't we have 120km/h range test for the Model 3 SR+ available, comparison to the ID.3 would be nice?
Any idea when the 77kWh version will be released for you to test? Also, I’m completely SHOCKED that a backup camera isn’t A. Mandatory equipment in the EU, B. Not standard on a car that costs this much and is so “tech” centered... I’m really looking forward to VW’s ID.4 USA reveal today! I hope it’s got impressive specs, a low price and decent availability!

Never clicked so fast
great to see all these incremental improvements across and between manufacturers. As expected the ramp up is rapid in the early phase and will presumably plateau sometime in the future, though a long way to go yet....ICE had a 100 years of improvement and still going..
Looks better than the model 3
love the "yo whats upp"
Love the video because it’s so neat and clean
REAR DRUMS, VW has understand !!!
michelcote : At least no rust
Great news for the car we have all been waiting for, I hope they can ramp up production and it will make it down under soon-ish
never been so fast
Your wife wouldn‘t be proud.
Tack Björn, vi har också väntat på denna recensionen!
Then you need to look at Geilo test.
Bjørn Nyland Will do! Thank you.
Nice.. That what we want to see from manufactures.. Just electric drive train, bare car.. No power suckink electronics - perfect.. Even manual seats
Totally agree. I don't have an EV, but i don't need all the fancy stuff. Just something basic with some range.
Theye „power sucking“ electronics make no difference at all. You could change your seat electrically the whole year 24/7 before running out of power
Test Test k think he is missing the point of why they left out many of these things
This car is much better then I have expected.
This car will be everywhere soon. At work they have allready been popping up.
@@abraxastulammo9940 ok. Maybe only a problem for german Autobahn. But this was not funny for us!
My skoda is the same with the locking/ unlocking. Maddening!
Thanks for the video, Bjørn! 👌
I haven’t seen the car in person, but the interior and especially the seats, look too cheap for a €40K car.
@@0tispunkm3y3r thank you! After all that covid-19 outbreak settles down, i`m gonna definitely check it out!
Björn did it again now with ID3 a good comparison. TQ
All the infotainment system is very tricky. Not so user friendly...and it should show the battery %. Hope VW will fix it soon, because i like it very much
You see the range left. Why you need percentage?
Why should rear wheel drive matter to the regen efficiency?
Good shit. Hope you get the chance of testing the "new" e-Niro and see if there's any improvement over the e-soul. Cheers.
It’s good that they’ve managed to do a decent first attempt at a first “proper” EV.
@timemachine_194 Also 1 meter turn radius difference is significant if you live in tight city or countryside with tight turning
timemachine_194
There is nothing “American” about the Model 3’s dimensions, unless you think the BMW 3-Series is also “American” in its dimensions. The Model 3 is simply, like the 3-series, a bigger car than the ID.3, which is the size of the VW Golf.
If that suits your needs better, it’s good that VW is providing an EV alternative for that segment of the market.
timemachine_194
Sorry, but these tired old stereotypes don’t serve any purpose.
Different people have different priorities, and I really don’t see the point of this kind of condescension about other brands based on national stereotypes.
timemachine_194
You’re still dancing around the point that you are trying to cast the Model 3 as some sort of stereotypically “American” car when the fact is that it is not that dissimilar to a car like the BMW 3-Series.
And the truck market has nothing to do with the sedan market either.
timemachine_194
It’s a mass market car in many countries, not just the US.
But apparently you are determined to perpetuate tired old national stereotypes to satisfy your smug sense of superiority over those silly “Americans”.
And let’s just pretend that Germans don’t care about performance and speed despite three of the major German brands emphasising performance in their marketing, including in Europe.
I wanna buy the ID.SpaceVizzion!
Waiting for it, too. First electric station wagon. Driving my Passat GTE until then.
@@johnsdiychannel8436 But does it come with rear back up sensors of any kind? Some distance warning as standard?
It prevents children to get in to the car! Nice feature! 😄
So far so good 👍
I was waiting for this video for a very long time, please make more videos from ID.3 and compare it with Tesla model 3
Great Video. Thank you Björn.
I got a feeling that vag made the mistake of making the new skoda nicer than this vw - so I look forward to hear you compare the 2 when you get to test the skoda
10 comments so far and 5 says “first”
They're delusional.
Have some compassion. They have achieved nothing in life and yet feel the need for a slight sense of achievement and validation
Please test the new etron S and etron sportback S ♥️
"yo what's up" = instant like lol
Best part about VAG cars are that you can use tools to unlock hidden features etc :)
And you won't get an "Incompatible modification of the vehicle detected” message when you do.
I’m looking forward to know the real range of the 45kw id3 and a review of it!!!
Don't you have consumption figures of model 3 SR at 120 km, or why don't you show them ... higher than ID.3?
Speed is measured in km/h.
Bjørn Nyland 😀😀😀
He didn't tested it, is was long time before ID3. Some people say it will be around 185wh/km. It is lower more aerodynamic car.
@@bjornnyland thank you, I did not know that! But where is your reply?
@@philipclaeys6920 you already know the answer based on his reply.
I wonder if the drivetrain is Korean...(the battery cells is from LG Chem AFAIR) That would explain the low consumption on par with Kona, e-Soul, etc.
@@abraxastulammo9940 those raw Newtone-meters don't make sense to compare unless gearing ratios, outer wheel dia and max motor rpm are known.
Good points... They might share some components, but as you guys say, putting it together at least seem to be purely VW then.
I hope this car sells well. I’d love one but probably still slightly too expensive.
I hope VW brings the ID3 TO The US. Excellent review.
No, it won't. But it will bring its brother to the US, the ID.4.
Id.4 are getting 3 years free charge with electrify america: media.electrifyamerica.com/en-us/releases/112
Please add a day/night column to the range worksheet.
If this is the base model, its impressive
I love your German!!!
I know. That's why I said it. To trigger you and other Ioniq fanboys.
Thank you Bjorn !
I like the Bjorn new ABBA song: Super Trooper, I'm a-gonna ban you, if you can't be true; like I always do, or I'll always screw you too"
What is the expected range (km) and consumption for a Model 3 SR+ at 120 km/h?
185-190 wh/km.
For this is a VW you have to check the consumption reported by the car against the values from the cargingpoint.
I did and it was correct.
Excellent stuff - thank you!
Great to see the EV revolution happening in real time! Good on VW for creating a great little car.
Thank for making all of these videos.. Now I even know thst lighter wheels are pointless.. Its the rubber or rolling resistance and aerodynamics of the car!
Cantwait for the next models to come out, so these can get cheaper second hand
100kg more than the main competitor the Model 3 SR+, probably because of sound proofing. A good investment of the 100kg if you ask me.
The mission was to beat the price of the Model 3 SR, mission success for VW. But missing a supercharger network for long distances. Shame...
Next big thing for common people will be ID.1 v. "Model 2" from Giga Berlin 2023.
Also: Don't we have 120km/h range test for the Model 3 SR+ available, comparison to the ID.3 would be nice?
Hi Bjorn, I really miss the noise test.
Coming once I have measured all 3.
Any idea when the 77kWh version will be released for you to test? Also, I’m completely
SHOCKED that a backup camera isn’t A. Mandatory equipment in the EU, B. Not standard on a car that costs this much and is so “tech” centered... I’m really looking forward to VW’s ID.4 USA reveal today! I hope it’s got impressive specs, a low price and decent availability!
