      I felt like I received a transmission of loving kindness from Thich Nhat Hanh last night during meditation. I don’t know if it was my imagination or what, but it felt real. Like a reminder that i was loved by him and the Sangha. He is Such a beautiful being shining the light of love from within out to the world. So beautiful. I met him in MS at retreat.

    So unhappiness is expecting more of the moment than it has to offer. Happiness is expecting less than the moment has to offer. Peace is being in the moment.

    • @kathrynck
      @kathrynck 4 роки тому +8

      I agree with this.
      I'd point out that this also dovetails into what we know about these states of minds scientifically. Although I'd point out that "unhappiness" is an evolutionary trait, which ideally is meant to spur us into action to better our situation. Unhappiness only becomes pathogenic, when it is persistent, and married to a feeling of being unable to change the cause.
      In a study of depression (of all forms) many years ago, a very striking finding was made. If you plot a 4-square chart with internal vs. external "locus of control" across one axis, and internal vs. external "locus of blame" (or 'attribution', or 'belief in capability to effect change'). The VAST majority of those who suffer from all forms of depression test as having the blend of a low internalized sense of control, with a high internalized sense of blame. There are other fertilizers of depression in the mind, but those who experience depression have a nearly 100% chance of falling into this quadrant on that chart. I believe it is an "essential" nutrient of lasting forms of despair, without which suffering cannot long survive.
      Obviously Buddhism looks much deeper into the matter, at such root causes as the focus on 'finite' self as an unavoidably 'interested party with preference' (thus their take on ego). I am not a buddhist myself. I merely find that my own explorations have lead me to numerous parallel observations.

      For me the teaching is that you can not experience left without right or darkness without light. The teaching is not to be kind, caring, loving and peaceful. It is to be unkind & kind, to be loving & unloving, etc... to SEE the wrong view AND the right view without judging any of them. That is what brings real peace.

Till then we all will keep looking for our missing parts. The clue of whats missing lies within, in our disturbed emotions, overcoming resistance. Its all about acceptance, healing, becoming whole and arriving home.

    "The concept that suffering and happiness must 'interbe' emphasizes the coexistence of opposites. This perspective encourages a profound understanding of well-being as the other side of suffering rather than a separate state. It resonates with the idea that acknowledging our suffering leads us to true happiness, framing both as essential parts of a unified experience.

    I will always treasure Thay’s teachings and light. And while I understand some use the word depression, when perhaps they may mean a prolonged sadness as an example of something you are “feeding”, clinical depression is a mental illness, and there is a chemical imbalance in the brain. This is important to remember, especially when we are meant to look deeply into what is causing our suffering. Mental illness, in my personal experience can not be overcome with just meditation and religious practice; It requires medical intervention. So.. for those that listen to this teaching and have depression it isn’t your fault, and if meditation and mindfulness isn’t working, it is ok, some of us require more. ❤️and respect to Thich Nhat Hanh

    Reminds me of Taoism, things are known by their opposite, and each thing entails its opposite. The Eight-Fold path with its emphasis on rightness reminds me of the Four Confucian Virtues. Love seeing how these traditions intersect and agree.
