Great video - can't believe MB thought it would be great to have to turn the recorder on every time before using the car. You should turn it on once and if you want it off you should go back in and turn it off. My plug-and-play camera works so much easier.
We own both a current model gls and 2 tesla model S. In terms of surveillance cameras, there's no comparison. Tesla's sentry mode plus multiple "dashcams" is the gold std. I cant see why Mercedes doesnt include similar.
Thanks for the video. I have the dash cam on my 2021 E350. It's useful, but not nearly as feature-rich or practical as it should be (in my opinion). The fact that you have to turn it on each and every time you start the car, rather than having the option of starting automatically, makes it a pain in the neck. In addition, there are no options to select resolution levels or duration of recording. Obviously it only records the front of the vehicle as well, which is better than nothing, but not as useful a being able to record both front and rear angles. I like the fact that you can review your recordings on the screen in the vehicle and have the option to go full-screen, however, and it is nicely integrated into the car. I am hopeful that Mercedes will modify the software at some point to enable the user to select to automatically record whenever the car is started, or at least in motion.
+1.. An informative How-To. .. Subscribed. .. Update 5/23. . We had ordered & spec'ed a MY2023 E-Klass E450 wagon with the DashCam option. The wagon's production date was 11/2022. . The DashCam auto-starts with each and every start of the engine. . When the wagon is stationary and the Stop/Start engine feature does its thing ... the MB factory-production DashCam continues to operate/record. .. My.02 cents is the MB factory-optioned DashCam is worth considering. .. Cheap insurance and with so much BS out on the road today.. Cheers, Vail, Colorado
I have the 2021 E350 with feature pkg 1 . do not see the u21 that you mention . how do I see about getting the dash cam and what other components are required . Cameras work great for the other features but would like to see dash cam too.

Does it have collision detection so that if you're in an accident it starts recording? Already ordered mine with the dash cam and it not having automatic start up makes it pretty useless
At the moment it does not have accident detection or automatic recording. Just because its not available now doesn't mean it won't be later. These vehicles have over the air updates and I believe many of these features will be implemented in future updates. Mercedes-Benz has no plans to install the Dashcam after the manufacturing process (meaning you get it from the factory or you don't get it at all). As far as I know, this is the only manufacturer with a Dashcam integrated from the factory. In my opinion, with anything new there is always more to be desired. Thanks for commenting!

It’s very interesting. Perhaps it should turn on and off automatically and simultaneously when the engine is started or turned off. The loop mode, with significant memory capacity should be set as the default mode.
It's a useless expense, it doesn't allow you to set the recording automatically when you turn on the car. It also doesn't have the function of allowing parking control.There are Dash CAMs that with an equal or even lower cost have much broader features! I can't understand why Mercedes technicians do not develop software with extra features, it's really indecent
As a Mercedes benz technician we don't design or program or do any of that. We strictly diagnose the issue and fix it. If its a more serious issue then the tech starts a case with Mercedes engineers. You should be asking the engineers to do what you're asking. The technician has no power over that.

GLE 2021 450.It was a wasted $200. You have to remember to turn it on everytime you start the car and surf through the menue to find it. I never remember to turn it on. I have a aftermarket camera in my 2011 ML350 . You start the car and forget it.

I believe you do. You can see the camera is it’s there from the front of the car where the backview mirror is. You see on in the middle and I believe 1 on left and right side ( I believe they are for traffic sign recognition ) the center cam is normally used for navigation but in Holland if we order from the Mercedes online shop ,the dashcam it will “ unlock “ the possibility to use it as dashcam.
I think the dash cam is a terrible option, it's not automatic it only works for the memory capacity of The particular memory stick that you have, if Mercedes is going to put a dash cam in a car then they need to put one in that works and needs to turn on automatically record automatically in the event of a crash that needs to automatically save the video. This isn't 1995, video cameras and technology have come a long way, I think you would be a waste of money to buy the one Mercedes has you can get an aftermarket dash cam that would really do the job.

I have a 2020 GLE 450. Once I noticed an app for the dashcam but it said it was not avaiable. But, I certainly have the camera bc I have the augmented reality GPS feature. Do you think it is possible that my GLE would have that dashcam feature now? I think the hardware is there.
2020 GLEs will not have the dashcam feature available. This could change in the future but it is unlikely. Even 2021 GLEs can be equipped with the Augmented Video for Navigation and still not have the dashcam unless it is optioned from the manufacturer. Thanks for being subscribed for 11 months!
You have the necessary hardware which means you only need the software updated to turn on the dashcam feature. Ask your dealer service dept if they can turn the feature on in the software and how much they would charge. BMW has this capability for some features such as satellite radio for example.

I own a EQE 43 AMG with latest MBUX and augmented reality. I took the dashcam option for 240€. Installation went fine and it works! One problem: The recording is regularly interrupted because contact with the storage medium is lost for a few seconds. I have tested this with several USB-C sticks but the problem occurs with all of them. Can you help resolve this problem or give me some advice, Thanks very much! Kind regards Eric

A camera with only up to 720p quality in 2021 is embarrassing! If any cell phone camera had those specs, it would easily not even sell especially from a luxury brand. Better of using an old cell phone as a dash cam than video up to 4K quality at least
Hey Mercedes doesn't work but adding it to your "favorites" list at the first space, you can activate it with just 2 clicks. It would be so much better if it automatically started.

Outstanding. Answered a couple of questions I had regarding the dash cam...which I will be ordering on my 2021 GLE350 4MATIC. Quick question. I was under the impression that if your car was hit while parked (car turned off), the dash cam would be automatically activated and start recording. Hi Garett. Can you use Apple CarPlay and dash cam at the same time? Because phone has to be plugged into USB in order to use CarPlay, and you said dashcam requires a USB memory stick.
Garret - I checked and the 2021 GLE brochure and the online configurator don’t list or show a dash cam option. How do you order it and where is it shown?
MBUSA unfortunately doesn't show the dash cam on the build configurator. If you want to order it, your local dealer will be able to spec that option for you. It is interesting that Mercedes-Benz doesn't reference it anywhere for the customer.
Your video answered many questions I had about my new glb250 installed at factory dashcam. I was using a 2G usb storage. No wonder it couldn’t record anything. But I’m still not sure about the special adapter you mentioned that I attach the usb storage device into. Do you mean a USB- C adapter? Thank you for the great video.
Glad to hear many of your questions were answered. There are USB-C adapters to allow older styles of USB devices to work. With the (USB-C) mentioned in the video there is no need for an adapter because it is a direct connection to the vehicle. Does this answer your question? Thank you for the comment!
I noticed that the videos stored in the memory stick are about 1 minute (size of ~55K) a piece. Is this correct, they are in many small files but not in a continuous format?
Very crude compared to BMW’s dashcam on the X5 for example. The BMW system uses all 4 cameras and as such can record video on all sides (360 degrees) of the vehicle. It also stores the videos internally and so does not require an external memory stick to save the videos.
I have E450 2021 with an inbuilt dash cam. There are 3 c USB ports. I have observed that if I use dash cam then I cannot play songs through the other USB ports. Can you let me know what to do.

@@mtr5454 both lol dash cam records either in loop mode which breaks up the video in 100 different segments or the continue mode which won't allow you to record the whole drive if jts a longer drive. Stick doesn't have enough memory and doesn't allow you put a bigger USB. You're welcome to try. Worst part you can't even access the footage from the car with any organization. Doesnt tell you time or date. MB should've taken a note out of tesla for the dash cam compatibility and ease of use
It was launched in the UK today and works perfectly. What you can do is add the start recording button to your favourites so you don’t have to go to the app every time
You mis-spoke. The future of the dash cam IS NOT IN A MERCEDES. The fact you have to turn it on every time is antiquated compared to other car brands that feature factory dash cams. AND the fact you have to plug in a gaudy thumb drive that’s visible and/or in the way is pathetic. Car should have an internal hard drive and only use a thumb drive if you wish to pull a video from it.
Well, here we are two years later (a.k.a. “the future”) and Mo and behold, 2024 MBUX has the automatic on feature! How do your words taste? They’re best served with a side of crow.
Yes there’s been an update,BUT!!! Still doesn’t turn on for 2-4 minutes into the drive. A lot can happen in the first 2-4 minutes when leaving a parking lot for example. STILL DEFINITELY NOT THE FUTURE OF DASH CAMS. Crow still isn’t a tasty bird 🤣🤣🤣

Unable to setup automatic start make the feature less useful. And the system take few minutes to get ready after starting the engine make it very annoying. No sounds , Video quality is bad, and a lot of reflection from the windshield(GLE SUV). Overall, I am disappointed. Do better Mercedes! (This is still a good video, thanks! )

What is the purpose of this camera if it’s not possible to enable automatic recording and the parking mode is not available as well? I’ve got the camera and I’m really disappointed.
New technology always needs improvement. These vehicles have the ability to do over the air updates. It is very possible these future updates will make the system better. In regards to why it doesn't automatically record...that is to protect you from the footage being used against you (if you were in the wrong). Sorry to hear your are disappointed. Mercedes has to provide with an option to enable automatic recording. In this case it will be my decision to enable it or not. A dashcam with parking mode is a very important feature that provides security by watching over my car while it’s parked. My hope is that it will be implemented by Mercedes.
Great video, seen others but yours is clear and understandable. Also showed the bigger playback which a couple of others did not. Its defo a missed option not to have it start each time you start the car as others have said on here. Maybe MB will do a workaround if they are watching these UA-cams? Or maybe some techy out there can tell us how to override this issue?

I can't figure out how to view the videos on my computer. Even though they are MP4 files, my computers and phone indicates all the files are bad.

I own a EQE 43 AMG with latest MBUX and augmented reality. I took the dashcam option for 240€. Installation went fine and it works! One problem: The recording is regularly interrupted because contact with the storage medium is lost for a few seconds. I have tested this with several USB-C sticks but the problem occurs with all of them. Can you help resolve this problem or give me some advice, Thanks very much! Kind regards Eric

A camera with only up to 720p quality in 2021 is embarrassing! If any cell phone camera had those specs, it would easily not even sell especially from a luxury brand. Better of using an old cell phone as a dash cam than video up to 4K quality at least

In my testing I have been unsuccessful in activating the dash cam using "Hey Mercedes". It would be much easier if that were possible.
Hey Mercedes doesn't work but adding it to your "favorites" list at the first space, you can activate it with just 2 clicks. It would be so much better if it automatically started.

Outstanding. Answered a couple of questions I had regarding the dash cam...which I will be ordering on my 2021 GLE350 4MATIC. Quick question. I was under the impression that if your car was hit while parked (car turned off), the dash cam would be automatically activated and start recording. Hi Garett. Can you use Apple CarPlay and dash cam at the same time? Because phone has to be plugged into USB in order to use CarPlay, and you said dashcam requires a USB memory stick.

Garret - I checked and the 2021 GLE brochure and the online configurator don’t list or show a dash cam option. How do you order it and where is it shown?
MBUSA unfortunately doesn't show the dash cam on the build configurator. If you want to order it, your local dealer will be able to spec that option for you. It is interesting that Mercedes-Benz doesn't reference it anywhere for the customer.

Glad to hear many of your questions were answered. There are USB-C adapters to allow older styles of USB devices to work. With the (USB-C) mentioned in the video there is no need for an adapter because it is a direct connection to the vehicle. Does this answer your question? Thank you for the comment!
Can you purchase this app for a 2022 GLS just like you can with BMWs?
I noticed that the videos stored in the memory stick are about 1 minute (size of ~55K) a piece. Is this correct, they are in many small files but not in a continuous format?

Very crude compared to BMW’s dashcam on the X5 for example. The BMW system uses all 4 cameras and as such can record video on all sides (360 degrees) of the vehicle. It also stores the videos internally and so does not require an external memory stick to save the videos.
Thats very cool that the BMW can record 360 degrees. Hopefully Mercedes will do that as well.

@@mtr5454 both lol dash cam records either in loop mode which breaks up the video in 100 different segments or the continue mode which won't allow you to record the whole drive if jts a longer drive. Stick doesn't have enough memory and doesn't allow you put a bigger USB. You're welcome to try. Worst part you can't even access the footage from the car with any organization. Doesnt tell you time or date. MB should've taken a note out of tesla for the dash cam compatibility and ease of use

It was launched in the UK today and works perfectly. What you can do is add the start recording button to your favourites so you don’t have to go to the app every time

You mis-spoke. The future of the dash cam IS NOT IN A MERCEDES. The fact you have to turn it on every time is antiquated compared to other car brands that feature factory dash cams. AND the fact you have to plug in a gaudy thumb drive that’s visible and/or in the way is pathetic. Car should have an internal hard drive and only use a thumb drive if you wish to pull a video from it.

Yes there’s been an update,BUT!!! Still doesn’t turn on for 2-4 minutes into the drive. A lot can happen in the first 2-4 minutes when leaving a parking lot for example. STILL DEFINITELY NOT THE FUTURE OF DASH CAMS. Crow still isn’t a tasty bird 🤣🤣🤣

Unable to setup automatic start make the feature less useful. And the system take few minutes to get ready after starting the engine make it very annoying. No sounds , Video quality is bad, and a lot of reflection from the windshield(GLE SUV). Overall, I am disappointed. Do better Mercedes! (This is still a good video, thanks! )

Are you trying to view the footage on your computer or inside the car?
There is a setting to have it start recording automatically ones car starts. You dont have to press start recording everytime

Does the video have your speed and other quantitative data on there (0 - 60 times, etc.)?

What is the purpose of this camera if it’s not possible to enable automatic recording and the parking mode is not available as well? I’ve got the camera and I’m really disappointed.
New technology always needs improvement. These vehicles have the ability to do over the air updates. It is very possible these future updates will make the system better. In regards to why it doesn't automatically record...that is to protect you from the footage being used against you (if you were in the wrong). Sorry to hear your are disappointed. Mercedes has to provide with an option to enable automatic recording. In this case it will be my decision to enable it or not. A dashcam with parking mode is a very important feature that provides security by watching over my car while it’s parked. My hope is that it will be implemented by Mercedes.

Great video, seen others but yours is clear and understandable. Also showed the bigger playback which a couple of others did not. Its defo a missed option not to have it start each time you start the car as others have said on here. Maybe MB will do a workaround if they are watching these UA-cams? Or maybe some techy out there can tell us how to override this issue?

Nice feature but totally useless if I have to start it every time manually. The one time I may forget to start it may be the time I needed it most.
