Let’s stop and give this man some appreciation. Ain’t no other UA-cam channel with such a dynamic and easy visualization of the fretboard, good explanations and great lessons.
Man.... Ive seen dozens of guitar teachers on UA-cam and I swear your approach and method are among THE BEST. Im super serious . This stuff is magnificent. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Man,this is exactly what my Teacher want's me to do two Months ago. And you can see me 🤪 I almost lost my fun playing Guitar. Now i got it!!! Finally! thx for this leason. Greetings from Germany Lars
Wow! This and the 2.5 shape thing ... First thing in the morning, I am quitting my day job. Gonna make my living playing blues. And I don't even play yet. Ok ... actually I'm retired, but this is amazing stuff. Soooooo clearly organized and presented! Thank you !!!
I"m 65 and honestly, I don't play much anymore and forget what I once knew when I do pick up a guitar. Even though it doesn't take much time for the fingers to start working again from muscle memory, it does take time for the brain to remember. You're little house method of finding the major 3rd was very insightful and put me in a feeling way of playing just by hearing the 3rd for each chord change. That was a great tip to make the brain and fingers work together. Hopefully I'll play more than I do, but if I only pick up the guitar once in a while, I bookmarked your channel to get my brain working quickly. Great lesson.
I always strummed the guitar and never got too far past the CAGED system and scales. Now because of current events, I wanted to use this time to really learn and understand how it all comes together. I now know the CAGED system and how to use the pentatonic scales. Finding your channel has greatly given me motivation to keep practicing and get better!
Excellent lesson! You’re method of teaching has really helped me to visualize the fretboard better and understand the interval relationships in a blues solo. And you did it in 10 min!
This helped a few thing click for me. I am just starting to learn this stuff to know how to play over chord changes, after spending like 15yrs just learning solos etc. I have just started so I knew the trick to "find all the chords in the major". E.g. from the root, up a string (E to A string) for the IV chord, and then up two frets for the V chord. I knew that the 3rd was in the bar chord shape. for example the middle finger of the bar chord on 6th string is the 3rd. I realised from looking at your diagram, the 3rd follow the same pattern as the above method of finding the chords. If you know the 3rd is up one string and down 1 fret from the root, it's the same for the 3rd for the other chords as in up a string for IV chord 3rd, and up two frets for the V chord 3rd. So you can visualise where they are pretty easily.
Never too earlier to learn the blues. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and putting in the time to visually explain as well. Despite what my mind says, I believe my heart is calling for the blues.
I'm a visual learner in most cases your teaching method is spot on and has accelerated my ability to navigate across the fretboard and solo. I also noticed you taught on Guitar Tricks. Now I understand WHY you developed your own method of teaching. Thanks.
Just came across this and I think you have just changed my life forever! I'll have to check it out more but this may just be the key thing I have been missing in my musical life! If all goes well I will see you on your patreon! Nick
dear lord this channel. You, sir, deserve waaaaay more views and followers. this is the best channel, no joke. I do hope you make the same kind of videos for some jazz standards, though. It would be extremely helpful!
This video just snapped me out of the analysis paralysis I’ve been in. AWESOME!! Thank you for using the color chart as well. I’m the type that learns better with colors which I also learned from you many videos ago.
excellent. can you please make a rich and wholesome video on targetting all the notes of the diatonic scale including semitones. that would really humble any painful soul looking for playing the blues. And awesome video. so unique and informative.
Big Thanks Gary! This lesson has really opened up the Blues for me. This and the lesson on 2.5 Pentatonics makes the 1st and 4th positions almost seem like extensions (or wings) of the House of Blues👍
This is just so crisp and fun! Great illustrative/teaching technique and energy. Keep up the great work - I am definitely signing up for all your lessons!
That was really fantastic! Great visualization with the “house”. I guess another way to think of the other major 3rd locations would be just parallel to the blue note (6th fret in A)
I pretty much taught myself how to play guitar using UA-cam videos, books, etc. but this video here did more to pull me out of the frustrating rut that I was in than anything else. Thank you sir very much for your help! 🙂 Oh and just for the record, I to call those fingers the pointer and pinky. I don’t know anyone that calls it the “index finger.“. 🤔
Man, Im From Brazil and I have to say. You have the best way to teach guitar in UA-cam. I would like to know if in your course all the pentatonic scales (major and minor) are taught. If yes, for shure I will be your new student. Congratulations!!!!
Hello Leandro - the thing is, there is only one pentatonic scale. It is both major and minor - it just depends which note you call the root. In the course we use the key of A minor and C major and we play on tracks in both those keys. However we use the same scale because they are the relative major and minor of each other. We also only stick with shape 1 and the house of blues, but then at then end I tell you where to go next and link to some of my sequential youtube videos as the follow up homework, but the course focuses mainly on phrasing, ear training, creativity, and being musical using just a few notes which to me should be explored before mastering all of the shapes, etc. All the best! Gary
Ditto to all the compliments below. This is GREAT for targeting those 3rds while soling over "changing' chords rather than making random passes within the pentatonic scales. THANKS so much!
This is perfect for trained musicians coming from keyboards or other instruments where you’re not talking about fret numbers or tabs so much as 3rds 5ths roots 9ths..
You really do have an amazing way of teaching, synthesizing information, animating...it’s all so good and makes being a patron a privilege.
Thank you so much Patrick! I appreciate your support and encouragement. I'm glad you're finding value in the lessons!!!
Let’s stop and give this man some appreciation. Ain’t no other UA-cam channel with such a dynamic and easy visualization of the fretboard, good explanations and great lessons.

hahaha thanks for the comment, and for the laugh! :D
I understood it literally from the beginning of the lesson. That’s something I’ve never experienced from UA-cam teachers before. Thank you for that 😃

A brilliant lesson. You have a new devotee.
This is great. A video on where to find the chord tones for each chord in all 5 boxes would be so helpful.

Great lesson!!
These videos are so good for the way I learn ❤️
Great explanation. I guess that the way forward is to experiment simply and then bring back in learned licks, accentuating these 3rd chord tones.
Thank you very much. I was looking for a funny way to start practice jamming. Not easy to find and you got it !
