Festool workplace organisation and storage solutions #2

  • I have decided to get rid of all of the scruffy toolboxes and cheap containers for screws and other bits and replace them with Festool kit bought from Axminster here in the UK. As these new containers are part of a "System" I can easily mix and match what I might want to take with me if I am working away from base.
    In the workshop they store neatly are easy to use and are very rugged. I am delighted with all of this new kit. Festool UK have kindly lent me some additional items to help me complete this series of videos.

    Storage solutions are a pretty dry subject but you make it very watchable with your humour and snazzy organ music. Great video :)

    I have purchased most of Festool organising products from the Sys roller to the power hub and most in between, I'm just not an organised person, I end up with tools in random boxes all the time. It's like van racking another good idea if it's used as intended.
    But great vid as usual it has inspired me a little😀

      Hi Ian, If it helps, I too am a bit like you and as a consequence I have 6 tape rules in the workshop and I can never find one when I need it. I think that they talk to each other and can run and hide when I am not looking. Cheers. Peter

      Hi Peter, thanks I will. Have found another local Festool dealer who does actually hold the storage system in stock and as I suspected its much clearer when you can actually handle the products themselves.

    The label areas are exactly the size of a standard business card which always looks good and is a free advert.

    Excellent stuff again Peter, good to get a bit more detail of what can be achieved with these.
    The down side is you're tempting me to spend more money.
    Good to see you've got your twin brother helping out now. :-)

      Hi Pete, Having a few systainers makes it look like a lot but when you take the tools out and place them side by side they do not seem like much at all. I really like these storage boxes though and have emptied all of the stuff from my old crappy storage units into the Festool ones that I have bought and I still have tons of space left over. Cheers. Peter

    I have had 2 sortainers for about 13 years now. The weak point is the latch mechanisms. After a while, they hang up and don't want to fall into their dog slots. Also, be careful about overfilling the drawers particularly with screws. They can get jostled around and lock the drawer into position making it extremely difficult to remove.

      Many thanks for the advice. I do intend to try and test it to the limit. So many things may escape an initial assessment (and video) but I can always return with long term advice at a later stage. Cheers. Peter

    Love your videos... Peter, here's a bit of intel for you. You can use plastic credit card blanks as label inserts on all the sys boxes. They fit exactly, are interchangeable and super cheap. I got 50 of them on Amazon for about $6.00 U.S.
    You can write on them with a Sharpie, or go full OCD like me and use a label maker.
    Cheers

    Hello Peter. There are tradesmen out there that think Festool is just over priced. I have to disagree, yes it's not cheap but having used many brands it think the research and development, systemisation, design and efficiency set them way in front of the competition. Thanks for an excellent review and explanation.

    The "odd sortainers" are the classic mechanism to lock systainers together, while the other ones are the "newer" T-Loc ones. Tanos/Festool made sure that you can still combine them, but the classic ones need to go on the bottom.
    What bothers me with the SYS-Sort IV / 3 Sortainer is the middle part wher you have to use dividers instead of the boxes you use on the sides. It feels like they wasted some space there when you need to organize lots of small parts.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  6 років тому

      I understand your point about the middle part of the drawer but one can use the space for larger items or things that do not need to be in a removable box. Cheers. Peter

    • @ulaB
      @ulaB 6 років тому +1

      Of course you can do that, but you could've done that also if they had designed it so it'd fit more boxes :-). I would've loved to organize a whole assortment of screws (smaller like M2, M3) into one drawer, but now I "have to" mix the screws with other bigger parts. That just tickles my organizing bone. ;-)
      I like your videos, Peter. Really well done.

    Hi Peter,
    Another difference between the 'old' sortainers and the 'new' ones you didn't mention is that in the older ones the drawers can be put in - and thus accessed - from the back. I could never figure out why Festool (or Tanos) did that…

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  7 років тому

      Yes, I am aware of it but it is hardly worth mentioning. Good point though. Many thanks. Peter

    Hi peter,
    I've got two sys 3 draws, and also a sys sort 4 and sort 9. It's worth noting that the large draw on the sort 4 is actually a bit deeper than the sys 3 draws.
    One problem that I have with the system is not being able to put the sort units with the smaller draws on top of the normal systainer. I wonder if there is a way of adapting them to make this possible? i have though about permanently attaching an empty sys 1 to the bottom of my sort 9, just to make it T lock compatible.
    The other problem with the system, as commented by some else below, is that you also need the mindset which isn't something you can buy, until perhaps Festool can make some kind of organisational co-processor which I can plug into my brain.
    Jake has made a very wise career choice
    Andrew

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  7 років тому +1

      Hi Andrew, It is funny that you mention the Sys compatibility as I was toying with the idea of designing an interfeace unit, probably less than 25 mm in depth that would do what is required. The trouble is not many people would want it. Yes, Jake will do well as long as he works hard and listens to his boss who is the most incredibly talented cabinet maker. Peter

    Just wanted to say thank you for the really informative and entertaining introduction into the festool sor-/systainer range. Hi Jo, I do not get paid by anyone but get a small income from the adverts that UA-cam place on my videos. Festool is a great company with some terrific products. Love your videos, and gradually watching through all of them and they are very informative. Word of warning though, if you have any kind of promotional agreement with axminster tools or festool, then you need to declare that your video "includes paid promotion" or "hashtag AD". The ASA are getting hot on this stuff now. This isn't a snipe, just a word of warning.

      Hi Rob, I do not get paid by anyone to make my videos. I design woodworking tools and some are produced by Axminster but they do not pay me to promote them. Festool have never given me a penny but I have spent a huge amount of my money on their tools and am proud of my buying choices. Peter

    I have trouble finding things right under my nose (old age) and even as a none professional I'm a big fan of this type of storage. I use a mix of Makita and Festool systainers and to be honest I'd be utterly lost without them. What took you so long? :-)

    Thank you Peter. Very helpful. Can you provide your thoughts on “drill and auger bit” storage ideas incorporated into the Festool Sortainer System. I prefer pieces to lay flat. David USA

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  3 роки тому

      Hi David, I am not sure if you mean a particular arrangement or the general principle of storing auger bits. If it is the latter then auger bits and brad point bits can be tricky stored upright as the fingers tend to get cut from time to time. I particularly like my Forstners stored flat. Peter

      @@NewBritWorkshop Hi Peter, thank you for the prompt feedback. I agree on the safety aspect. But, yes, I am trying to incorporate drill bit storage into my Festool Storage System. I called Festool and currently they do not have a “horizontal” rack to accommodate a horizontal individual space for each drill “and” have a spot to mark the size. So I thought of utilizing the Festool 500692, pull out drawer component and incorporate a home made insert. It is 57 mm deep. Or find a tray insert maybe at Axminster. Your thoughts. I love your uTube presentations.

      Hi David, After the filming Jake sat down in a corner by the fire. Mrs Miggins went to the kitchen and made him a lovely cup of tea but she was distracted by a knock on the door. After several minutes she went back to the kitchen to find Jake drinking his tea and helping himself to the biscuits which were kept next to the kettle. She was very cross and told Jake that he had been naughty. Jake went back to work and was sad for the rest of the day. Peter

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  7 років тому

      Because in the time it takes for an A class cabinet maker to produce something that people will see and judge him by he could earn enough to get the Festool ones. All those plastic trays that I showed cost about £45. If I were to make them it would take a day as it would be quite fiddly. If I were still going to job sites or whatever I would expect to be getting at least £300 a day. Peter
