This video helped on my Kohler Command Pro 25 too. The linkage is a little different, but the concept was the same and got me back out and mowing! After replacing a leaky governor shaft seal, the engine would start, then rev up too high. It ran fine before taking it apart. Thank You for the help!
Very good video for adjusting governor on Kohler CV engine! Well spoken, good clear steady picture, pointing the direction with finger was right on. After total rebuild, I installed it and it started right up at OVER 4K RPM WIDE-OPEN, (3,600 RPM is normal) it would idle fine with throttle pulled back, but slightly increase throttle and engine would snap to wide open RPM's instantly, after watching this video, I went out and did what this video showed and now engine starts normal again; throttle response is normal, no problem now. Thanks for posting this video.
I watch a lot of videos and will say this was one of the best. You know what you are doing and are able to relate it. I do small engine repair and at times need information like this a no bull video. Thanks
Excellent video. I saved for future reference. I'm lookin to set the hi idle on a KT475. WANT TO INCREASE IT FROM 3400 TO 37OO LOADED FOR MORE BLADE SPEED. CAN YOU HELP ME?
excellent video. You are a gifted presenter: very clear, concise and to the point. This is the best description I've seen on how a governor works. I have viewed well over 500 hundred how to videos related to small engine repair and this is the best I've seen on this subject. My enthusiasm has caused me to use too many words which is ironic because the thing I admired most about your video is how each word means so much and there are no fill in wasted words.
Me again, I used this video to fix my KOHLER 23 v twin John Deere L-130. After John Deere worked on my tractor, they left the governor disconnected with the wrong spring on the gov. Wow! Paid $3.00 for a new spring at the Mom and Pop hardware store and watched the video. Done!
Hi this is MJ Riverside California I just really want to thank you for taking the time in posting that on UA-cam. It did help a lot I still have some work to do but I understand the system better I did it just the governor and it runs better but I still think there's a spring that isn't necessary. I just want to thank you for posting your work it's very helpful. Blessings to you and your family thanks a lot buddy. MJ
This was not the information I need, but I still watched because it was concise, and loaded with good information. Fantastic video, but my throttle is stuck, so, into the rabbit hole of the interweb for information.
I had to replace the breather gasket which is behind the carburetor. When I put everything back together the engine idle took off screaming and I had no idea why. Your video was exactly what I needed. Thanks.
Great video. I recently rebuilt my kohler engine and was thinking that the governor needed to be at a specific spot so I checked your video out. Works perfect and am subscribing to your feed. Thanks again you saved me time because I don't have to figure it you with trial and error. Thanks again!
Appreciate your videos! Changed oil pan gasket on kohler cv740 the other day. Went to start it and it starts and dies starts and dies. Cleaned carb checked everything still nothing. So I’m thinking it has something to do with governor. I’m gonna check it today
Did you ever make the video on the sensitivity for the spring wholes , I purchased a mower with a kohler cv730s and someone has gotten into it that obviously didn't have a clue what they was doing and I'm trying to make sure it's right
I am having to fabricate sprints for a 22" deck walk behind mower. The springs are connected I don't know how it ran for a quarter of the front lawn... Your video gave me the exact understanding as to how my set up needed to be built. Thank You. Are you married? If so, lucky woman be grateful every day...
GREAT VIDEO! I've got the ZT720 and replaced my throttle control cable and I'm worried about adjusting it such that it won't cause an over rev situation. Any advice? I'm thinking I need to buy a tachometer to get it right but am hoping for a simpler solution. Thanks again for sharing your expertise!
My governor rod is moving back and forth. In and out. Does this supposed to happen? It’s also leaking oil from the rod. I went to replace the seal but honestly it looks good. Any help would be great. Thanks
I realize this video is quite old but I sure wish you would have addressed the different holes in the governor arm. Did you ever do another video? I can't find anything, anywhere that addresses the holes or the location where the other side of the spring connects.
Hope you can help.....recently had to do some electrical work....burned wiring on the ignition moule (where the key goes) replaced that..washed the mower water and detergent. Also cleaned the carb with carb cleaner. Now...busts right off, but if I engage mower at low rprm as usual, it dies....bur if i REV it up it will mow....I know it is a carb problem...any suggestion.....I hate to takeit to a shop if it is something really simple to fix my self. PS this is a Kohler Courage 25 hp on a Gravely 50" curt
having gov linkage problems, 23 hp kohler command, with a new gov return sprint ( due broken old one) one end goes in adj holes OK where does the other end attach?
Ok, I did that on my Kawasaki 17hp twin cylinder motor and it worked! Thank you! But now it doesn’t have a lot of power, is there another adjustment for that too?
I have the 22hp kohler motor, but i don't have that linkage coming from the left side in the video. Is that your chock cable? I'm also wondering what is supposed to pull the throttle closed, because mine doesn't seem to close all the way when you pull the lever all the way down.
Ive got a 98 Cub Cadet with a Kohler Command OHV 12.5HP motor, and I'd like to get it to go faster. would adjusting the governor let you get more RPMs out of it? That's what I've heard but I wanna make sure, and how to do it.
I noticed you didn't get answered, and in case someone else comes by, they can read my answer. Be warned, it may not be the best answer. Symptom: Your tractor runs at a lower rpm. When climbing hills, the tractor struggles, or doesn't have the power to climb the hill. You can adjust the throttle all you want, but you can't increase the high end until you reset the governor per the instructions given on this video. BTW, I think he did an excellent job. As to the spring, be careful re-positioning the spring as the motor my start surging when you apply power.
My symptoms were that the mower would crank and sound fine but when you press the forward or backwards pedal it would stutter like it was going to die...then rev back up and go fine (hydrostatic drive). Also when I engaged the blades, the rpms would dip real low and sound like it was going to kill the engine...but then the rpms would ramp back up and it would be fine. Also while mowing, when the grass got thick, it was pretty iffy on whether the engine e was going to die. I made the adjustment (very easy), and it runs like a hoss again. The engine doesn't even flinch whenever you engage the blades. My mower is 20 years old...I thought it was just getting worn out and it was time to buy another one. It is literally running like new again.
Yeah the symptoms of a governor out of adjustment is that it doesn’t respond as quickly as it used to. If adjusting it doesn’t help your governor weights may need to be checked, which required pulling the engine apart.
Thanks for the video. I have a Kohler cv20s and when you go to higher RPM the the governor arm rapidly opens and closes the throttle. Is this a governor adjustment ?
@@smallengineshop My Kohler Command 22 recently started running way too fast. I tried this adjustment but the governor shaft was already as far as it would go in the counterclockwise position. So I moved the spring from the 3rd hole to the 1st hole and it slowed it down some. But it runs about the right RPM with the throttle cable pushed all the way down. When I move it to the fast position it runs away again. I can't find anywhere on UA-cam how to properly set the throttle cable on the Kohler Command V-twin like in this video. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated
My friends seems to be running to high so his probably needs turned clockwise to drop its speed some unless its just the governor arm out of place cause i can hold that in place by finger then it runs smooth how it should then i let off and it runs to high
I have the kohler pro 20hp engine i got a strange problem. As i had a broken ignition coil (waiting for it as we speak) yours seems different a bit. That being said, i can open the throttle and it opens, however when i pull the lever down ....it seems to be stuck somehow will not go down. Until i push that arm down myself...might be dirt but not sure...what you think?!
Hi I have the same engine and mower as shown here. I am having to run my mower at full choke or it will shut off. I take it the main jet is clogged? Can you take the bowl off of this carb?
Nice video. I know this is not a question/answer forum, but I thought you might be able to answer this. On my mower (18HP kohler), it boggs down really easily when mowing. I have adjusted the governor like you say. If I watch the governor and engage the blade, the governor never moves the throttle. I can reach in and manually move the governor and the engine will speed up. It is like the governor is not even working. Is it common for the internals of the governor to break? Thanks
Helppp! I tried this, but when I started the Kohler, it went wayyyy too fast, it sounded like a jet, so I tried to make it go the original speed, but I couldn't fix it.
i have a problem with my kawasaki engine 25 hp, i hope you can check my chanel, i up load a video of the engine, its online one video that i have so you will have no problem to find it, i already have a comment about what could be the problem but i would like to have your opinion too. thank you!!

Did you every make a video on the governer hole sensitivity? I am wondering what all the holes do?
Hey, I'm trying to find the follow-up video on what the springs do in each hole position. I've got a Kohler 7000 22HP...
This video was vital to me putting my tractor back together. Huge help! Thank you!
This was not the information I need, but I still watched because it was concise, and loaded with good information. Fantastic video, but my throttle is stuck, so, into the rabbit hole of the interweb for information.
Great explanation. The only thing I would suggest/ask, is why you would need to adjust it to begin with. 👍
Thank you so much for this video i have a Kohler riding mower with the same engine, it's been hard to figure out but this will help tremendously.
David Whytock Thanks for watching!
Can you link the video about the spring sensitivity did you make that video

Thanks for watching
thank you VERY much......exactly what i needed. well spoken.

I'm trying to figure this out as well, I can't find anything that answers these questions. Did you ever figure it out?
My throttle cable will not close all the way it’s mostly open like being wide open all the time. Also should my cross shaft be loose?
Ok, I did that on my Kawasaki 17hp twin cylinder motor and it worked! Thank you! But now it doesn’t have a lot of power, is there another adjustment for that too?
Ideal screw

How to get more RPM? I need 300 more according to spec. Tighten spring? Reset gov shaft to lock nut?
Nice how to video. Thanks for posting!
Very nice narration, well done!

Thanks for the video info! It was very helpful.

These videos are great! Can you tell me what symptoms would tell us that we need to adjust the governor?

Are all engine adjusted counter clockwise? I have a 29hp Kawasaki. Thanks
Why can't they just make a idle adjustment screw? Thanks, John
I have a toro recycler with the Kohler engine. I wish there was a way to run a cable and lever up by the handle to adjust the speed manually
Thanks for the video. I have a Kohler cv20s and when you go to higher RPM the the governor arm rapidly opens and closes the throttle. Is this a governor adjustment ?
What's the purpose of adjusting the governor? What issues would one have that would make them know the governor needed adjustment?
Excellent video and exactly what I need. My Command 20HP idles way too high. The governor works just set too high.

I have a Kohler two cylinder vertical engine does anybody know how to set the Governor and points
thanks helped me out
I have this same style engine but for a 27hp it turns over and starts but as soon as I let go to the run position it turns off
Same here, but mine is 26hp
im just about to do this on a honda gx390 lol fun. thanks for video
Thanks
the video might be very informative if you would have mentioned what would cause the need for a governor adjustment...
Over the years of vibration from the engine running i think then the stuff loosens up
Looks like you didn't get an answer. I have the same problem.
i have a problem with my kawasaki engine 25 hp, i hope you can check my chanel, i up load a video of the engine, its online one video that i have so you will have no problem to find it, i already have a comment about what could be the problem but i would like to have your opinion too.
thank you!!
