  • Start with the fuel filter first, these should be changed atleast yearly. Don't buy the ones form lowes or home depot, they are overpriced and the exact same ones you can get off amazon in bulk at a lower price.

    I'm on my daughter's UA-cam account. I've found out that every time I have a surging problem is because the idle circuit/jet is plugged. Never the main jet. A plugged main jet will keep it from running. A plugged idle circuit/jet doesn't let gas through resulting the governor opening the throttle more until the main jet feeds the engine, which is too much and the governor slows it back down. The idle circuit/jet is plugged so it slows the engine too much so the governor opens the throttle more. It keeps going back and forth. (Surging) I've had main jets partially plugged but it never caused surging. Just under powered or loss of speed.

    Before taking the Carburetor off and apart try this little trick. Change the Fuel Filter as in this Video. Fill the gas tank to half way. Put Two Teaspoons of Gas Treatment “STP or SeaFoam,” per Tank Capacity, “Gallons.” Fill the tank up. Go ahead a mow the grass, with intermittent Idling. Most likely the problem will clear up before you get to half a tank. On smaller Engines with unknown capacity, add the Fuel Treatment to the Gas Can. The Gas Treatment Measure doesn’t have to be super accurate, just don’t dump a bunch in the gas tank. This has worked on 6.5 and 11 Briggs Engines, 18 HP Kohler and Kawasaki. Unknown Engine on Chipper, Power Washer and Snow Blower. Even fixed a Chainsaw after Cleaning the Fuel Strainer in the Fuel tank, and with a new Spark Plug.

      If you are held back by wet grass with the Morning Dew on it. Do this, take a piece of 3/4” to 1-1/2” pipe, length sized to your yard. Drill a hole in each end. Thread heavy twine or light cord through the holes, making a large loop with the cord. Drag the pipe across the lawn. This will knock the dew off of the grass, and the grass will quickly dry.

    Working on a GT5000 with a similar Nikki and my local parts house wants $68+Tax for a rebuild kit. Likely go with a cheap Amazon carb replacement for $32 or so since it’s 20 years old.

    I like using the same fuel filters with with a metal screen instead of the paper filter. You can blow them out with compressed air with good results.

    Changed my gas filter and spark plug after 10 years on my John Deere , which has been two years ago . I got too looking I could see a little debris in the gas tank , don't care how careful you are your going to get a little debris in one .

    Looks similar to the KT7500 engine in my Husqvarna and the worst engine I've ever owned. I noticed the engine stick when you turned it over - mine sometimes takes a number of tries before the starter turns the engine. It's had intermittent problems that I noticed before 30 hours but it was a late season purchase and may have always been a lemon. Sometimes it runs fine when cold and then hunts when it warms up and other times it hunts when cold and improves when it warms up. It's been tuned and tested but I haven't pulled the carb. Thanks for the video, I expect mine will be similar and probably need to pull it to troubleshoot.

    Sounds good,in my experience most starting and running issues are related to just what you did to this carburetor.

      You may have an air leak. Check the condition of the gaskets for the carburetor. Did you change the filter?

    Nice video. I have the same mower and same carburetor (Keihin). Do you have any idea what the top of the carburetor under the plate does? ( the part with the little maze). I was going to open it but one of the screws is stripped. Can't get it open.

    • @hanksgarage_
      @hanksgarage_  10 місяців тому +1

      You don’t need to worry about that. I believe it has something to do with the mixture ratio or air metering. Small engine carbs will always clog in the bowl and pick up jets. Those passages up top never touch fuel.

    I’ve replaced the:
    Carb (with an OEM kohler)
    Fuel pump
    Fuel filter
    Spark plugs ( I have a kohler v-twin pro series 7000 engine)
    Air filter
    Battery
    Blades
    Oil and oil filter
    And the damn thing STILL SURGES! I have run out of ideas.
    Any tips would be great, thanks!

      You may have an air leak at the carburetor gaskets or somewhere else messing with the mixture. How old is the gas?

    • @bigbutcher55alive
      @bigbutcher55alive Місяць тому

      May also be the gas cap. They're supposed to allow some air movement and they can fail.
