    Making an 8” Chef knife from 80CrV2 steel (FULL KNIFE BUILD) Forging, Heat Treat, Finishing, Sharpening
    Transcript
    Hey, what’s going on? In this video I’m going to be making an 8 inch chef knife.
    First I’ll forge out the blade from 80CrV2 steel. Then I’ll normalize and quench it in Parks AAA quench oil.
    I’ll attach some beautiful desert ironwood handle scales, and then sharpen it on some diamond stones.

    Description
    In this video I forge out an 8” chef knife from 80CrV2 steel. I normalize the blade with three cycles at 1650F, 1500F, and 1400F. I quench the blade at 1525F in Parks AAA quench oil that was heated to 120F. I tempered the blade for two 2-hour cycles at 400F. I attached desert ironwood handle scales, and took the handle finish up to 400-grit. I finished the handle with 3 coats of Odie’s Oil and allowed at least 12 hours of cure time between coats. I sharpened the knife on a set of diamond stones at 300, 1200, and 3000 grit. I polished the edge with a double sided leather strop loaded with 5 micron and 3.5 micron diamond paste.
    Thanks for watching!

      You're telling me man! I've got to put the scales on that the customer wants. 🙃 I definitely prefer working with ironwood over micarta or G10. Thanks for watching! 🤙

    Total issue is that you have to go through a whole roll of paper towels for each knife just so you can test the edge.
    Nice job.

      Lol, I've actually got a whole cupboard full of used paper towel rolls. If it makes you feel better, I only do that for knife videos. 😛

    David. Beautiful knife. Question, for your handles do you buff with a compound like pink mavericks AND Odies oil, or just the oil?

    • @DavidMoonForge
      @DavidMoonForge  25 днів тому +1

      Usually with micarta or other non-natural materials I buff them with pink polishing compound on a buffing wheel. I think buffing wood can make it look a little plasticy. It depends on the type and if it's been stabilized, but I don't buff ironwood. I sanded this one to 400-grit and then applied the Odie's Oil.
