USA provides stability for our region, China is disrupting this. We need to support stability and be part of the solution. Trade and defense are linked, our lack of action is why we do not have a trade agreement with the USA or India. Our Asian friends are looking for our support. This is more complicated than just USA vs China.

I think we could stay neutral on it, but I feel like what Australia gets involved with NZ is usually dragged along at some point.

Great interview! A paradox keep echoing is NZ should appease our biggest trading partner. Indeed, we should increase our bargaining power over the biggest trading partner to secure our interest, not the opposite and limit ourselves.

When it comes to regional global security matters NZ can't afford to be a fence sitter on this... I think that should always be a given.
NZ defence forces have participated regionally and globally. When it comes to defence matters.

Say we do go ahead and invest with the US. Will when in NZ's view the time has come to use the arms America will not give us permission? Or not in a timely manner? Like the Ukrainians have to wait and wait and take casualties until the American internal politics allow action.

Access to cutting edge technilogies? 25% of Australia's F35s sit on the ground waiting for eyewateringly expensive spare parts. Virginia Class subs have a huge reliability issue - 25%-30% are tied up in port at any one time awaiting repairs.

The western world has only 45 countries that are termed the west, that's it. BRICS. Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa now 35 countries are looking at joining BRICS.
China is not looking to build arms to threaten countries like America who have assassinated leaders of foreign countries. What other country has done that. America said do what I say. to its western allies and they all jump. BRICS is building an alternative to the western SWIFT. Using their own currencies to trade.
That's a good thing . Offering an alternative.
45% of the worlds GDP is with BRICS. 45 western countries will go into deep depression because America will drive them there.
America only interest has been to build weapons has 800 bases in different countries. That's over two bases per country in the world.
Those bases are are threat to the people of those nations. China has built economic successes. From a nation 40 years ago in deep poverty and the world laughed at them, to today where it has lifted 500billion of its own out of poverty and has become and will become the largest clean green economy in the world because it focused on its people and its economics.
Many countries in the western world have China as their main trading partner. Because BRICS and its allied nations are dumping the US dollar and its % mark up on every dollar knowing it cant do anything to BRICS which is being added too.
America has come up with how to try to get around that by imposing tariffs on the west to keep its dollar % it loses as more and more countries join the alternative to trading in US dollars, which is good news.
. Wake up China is not the enemy. While America was was building arms and fighting wars in so many countries because it had the biggest gun, China was quietly building its economy to where it is today. It will overtake the US within 3-5 years if not less.
NZ is dead without China. America doesn't care about us or any one else. It cant stop the BRICS nations. America has not a single EV on its roads and Trump wants to put a 100% tariff on EVs . that's a Fact.
America will throw NZ into depression because this govt hasn't the balls to say. Hey we are allowed to trade with those who give us good deals and in our own currency. Watch America tell more lies about China and watch the west like lap dogs lick it up.

hah, we cant even seem to be able to organize or afford a proper ferry for our only north to south island link, cost of building a new navy will starve and de-house even more desperate people.

    • @TyreseSummers
      @TyreseSummers Місяць тому +2

I dont think its an issue of affording a proper ferry its that they don't want to.
And then there's the 200 billion needed to get this countries infrastructure up to scratch. I'd like for our millitary to be at 2 percent but we have other problems to deal with first.
And to be honest I think this country is only going down hill I've lost hope for it.
So it's off to Australia for me they can add another young fella to the other tens of thousands.

Hi, I completely agree with what you are saying. And, just to add for the last 20 years in New Zealand there has been a mindset of de-institutionalisation to the point where there is either limited forms of no form of redundancy and national resilience. I bring this to your attention as this was mentioned in this discussion.

@benmunckhof-swain4493 100% that's how Trump got elected. The massive lack of critical thinking is astounding. I'm progressive but there have been several things this currently govt have done I agree with and several that I don't. Same with Labour. The problem is people on both sides get so entrenched in "sides" they fail to see let alone acknowledge the flaws in their own political party.
