01 im waiting for the man
An Underground Experience is a seedy documentation of one of the most important icons of subculture. She is caught on suitably grainy video footage doing what she did best, performing in an underground club. Shot in the early 80's with punk rock as an audience the film is hardly stunning, yet this somehow enhances its authenticity. Nico's presence is both powerful and at times moving especially during the interview section.

Fearless and brilliant artist. No pretension.
Finally, Nico is getting recognition, about what a great artist she was. I think this might be the band that she went on tour with round Europe before the wall came down. Great band. James Young, who was her keyboard player, wrote an amazing book about being on that tour with Nico. It's called 'Songs they never play on the radio.' You will not be able to put it down.
As a woman she was my favorite woman in music no one else can compare and it's not even how good or bad her voice is she just was naturally cool without having to try to be badass
Pretty sure it's Una Baines playing keys on this gig. Martin Bramah on guitar as well. Bloody brilliant.
This is such a raw performance I love her hauntingly beautiful chords what an intriguing goddess ❤🎉🎉
Brilliant. She doesn't give a feck, what a woman.
Nico is Incredible she is a true artist and there will never be another artist as real as she was.
She looks sad and tired, but she has a great voice ✨✨✨
A little like Ian Curtis, she was often away in another world
Oh yes, but she is amazing and high as hell😍
A little something called heroin
@@danielaschwarz1971 sad but true
@@john111257 Yes,she struggled with heroin addiction and Nico said, that she was unhappy when she was very pretty in the 60s.Sad that she destroyed herself but the deamon HEROIN is sadly stronger😢
Technically Ian Curtis was like Nico. He actually loved The Velvet Underground so I wonder what he thought of her as a performer
Love that organ!
She is amazing 👍
The eyes dont lie
I feel her pain ...
She's my #1
no pain at all...
@@irenan6585 uhmmm no you don’t understand…
This is effing brilliant!
love Nico so much
I saw her at Mabuhay Gardens in SF, hunched over her little harmonium. I forget what year, probably late '70s.
Nico needed help. so sad, but i loved her music.
That is so condescending! When I was a heroin addict people used to say the same thing about me. Addiction is a medical issue. The only thing for heroin is methadone which is more unhealthy on the body than heroin. It took me years to make progress and get into recovery.
Nico always great!!!
Thanks Cherry Red Records!
Good drummer
I love this song and I don't care if she was pretty high there. She was a fallen angel❤
@@danielaschwarz1971 I ALWAYS LOVE NICO♥️
@@charlesrast4235 Yeah, and I have a crush on her Song in this video, since I hear it the first time😍
Fabulous❤
@@danielaschwarz1971 check out her work with Velvet Underground
I know that feeling after you have taken heroin
The man obviously turned up for Nico before this performance. Great artist and brave woman.
how do you know "he" turned up before this performance?
@@r.g9044 She is definitely high, that's why.
Great version of majesty and power.
A frightening beauty.
Her eyes are pinned. she already scored.
I am so surprised that she was still around then, and that Lou Reed never gave her a hand to make a splash in New York as he could in 1982
victor morgado In 1982, Lou Reed had to work at staying clean and sober. Associating with an ex who still used would have endangered his sobriety. If Nico had lived, and cleaned up, I imagine they would have worked together in some way.
She didn't need Lou for that but I know what you mean
She did play with them again
She had been with Dylan ,Reed didnt forget , Dylan was the ass in that one.
Lou was a bastard. He actually taunted her with the idea of a comeback and helping him with his album and instead used it to just tease her with drugs which he never gave her and then left her out on the stoop
Uma das fases mais fascinantes da Nico, a beleza, a expressividade do olhar, o poder de hipnotizar e fazer a gente passar horas apenas admirando a sua figura, fascinante por si só, chega ao auge nessa fase final da vida dela. Eterna femme fatale!
Rainha da heroína, estrela gótica suburbana.
And here's Nico with the heroin...I mean the weather
😂😂😂
😆 She was so much on it here. Too obvious
She was not in fit here and i think she did most beautiful performances than those in preston in '82
We hope so!!!!!
Unique
WOW
N I C O : I C O N
Siempre❤
My man...not THE man...😷. Love the band. There's a pretty good movie about this part of her life called Nico 1988...
There's a German documentary, "Nico Icon" (it's here on the yt) and, yes, a magnificent Italian-danish film, "Nico, 1988", with very good acting (Trine Dyrholm is a real Artist, with a capital A) and ambience, poetic and beautiful. Obviously, sad
Nico's The Doors
to another world
If I'm not mistaken, it's supposed to be "the" man, not "my" man. It's a song about trying to find the subject's main drug dealer.
Still a better vibe imo haha
Lou Reed sings and the lyric is “my man” because it makes it more personal and ambiguous but the title is ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’
Ahhhh, it's so funny you're trying to educate/correct Nico about a song from the album she was literally a part of. She was also a heroin addict along with Lou Reed, so I think she is very well aware of the lyrics and what they mean.
Also... Waiting for MY man is a personal touch, when you're a heroin addict you usually have one main dealer and even if you don't, in that moment, they are YOUR man because they've got something you really want and need.
So please don't actually try to correct the woman who worked with VU and lived that lifestyle.
Nicosplaining lol 😅
git it girl
Yep, she is definitely f'ed up here.
+nallly Just incredibly strung out
+nallly great job analyzing that for us
The incredible thing is most people with a heroin habit this hefty don't function very well. It never seemed to stop Nico from working.
She has had a shot, but she still sound great.
Picture of health
Feel the fekin pain 😖
How tragically this song applied to her...
No it doesn’t.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
walks the walk + talks the talk
Spooky
mr. spikey hair wants up on that stage, dammit.. wonder what he'd have done if he made it?
After Jim Morrison an real survivor!
Morrison wasn't exactly a survivor....
Hey white Boy what you doing uptown....Love Nico❣
Oh dear........
RECOGNITION?????
If she'd still been alive when the VU reformed I'm sure they'd have got her in, though they probably still wouldn't have let her sing this.
gummboote such a shame, for me this song ALWAYS sounds better in Nico's voice.
@@juliananunes126 yup but Lou is very greedy with his songs. I know that it was supposed to be that Nico would sing “Venus in furs” and “I’m waiting for the man”
Dad rock!
Yeah, you can have your Ed Sheeran for your self!
Gak! what the hell was that?
Christa Päffgen
Up there with Yoko.
I wouldn't go that far because she is attempting to sing. Yoko just does whatever it is that she does!
lost in space...pain in the ass
everybody knows she cant sing ..... but everybody knows she was ALWAYS The Velvet Underground's Ice Maiden
check out im not sayin', she could sing
I love her voice!
She's a great singer.
If any 'artist' of the present generation was a junkie AND smoked they'd get nowhere.
To this day I just don't see the fasination of heroin it had nico pretty messed up still love her though
It's a good painkiller, very relaxing but also addictive.
Shit that isn't the best way to go to the great gig in the sky 👍😎
She was clean when she passed away.
Lou Reed=$$$$$$
Nico=€
Puff puff pass it on 🙂
man, this is fucked up.
That is one backup band I would _not_ want to be in! She would have driven me crazy.
her back up band can put up.or shut up
Clothie Doubles I know the saying, but I'm not sure what you mean.
On a song like this, you have to vamp on the two-chord change indefinitely while Nico makes up her mind when to start singing. And then, when she does, she's really not all that great, on this song.
One of her key board players wrote a book his experience touring with her. I have to buy it. In the film interview he seemed to have mixed feelings of respect, anger and confusion about her. He quit an academic career in music to support her. I think you have to acquire a taste for her voice especially her later work. She is definitely uniquely talented and brave person. She made some bad decisions in her life, but who has not?
@@elchachasinda could you tell me the title of the book or the keyboard player?
@@versnellingspookie songs they never play on the radio? Something like that. I think

I thought she was a blonde?
Oui c'était une vraie blonde cependant elle a préféré se teindre en rousse et puis en brune car elle a dit qu'elle n'avait pas été heureuse quand elle était blonde et belle.
... SMACK ...
look what its done to her !
mostly because the stuff she was injecting was full of impurities .
Because it was illegal she had to use dirty needles ..... so she got infections
perhaps we should say : look what ILLEGAL smack has done to her !
The Glamazon Club Its called addiction not impurity or dirty needles. Smack isn’t cannabis; IT KILLS
She was on Smack at this time but she became Methadon in 1985 and at this time she never took Smack again.I don't know if it's true?!
Painful to watch.
still good though
Sure she was a junkie but she sure did unforgettable shows
@@john111257 nope. Nico had completely lost "it" by this stage. Might actually be the worst cover of this song I've ever heard vocally
@@eddietasker9110 She was only getting into her stride. Bloody amazing.
Nico killed it and I mean in a very bad way!
No,she was great there❤
Love you, Nico, but you butchered this one.
Susan Howell lol
I think she's brilliant.
What a goddamn mess!
a beautiful mess
@@john111257 Right, a beautiful mess.I like her heroin look 💜
Heroin sucks.
Christ, she looks terrible. I saw some of these clips in that Icon documentary made about her and it's hard to watch - ironically, I seem to remember hearing that she regarded her 'ugliness' as beauty, referring to her physical decay being on drugs.
She claimed to be unhappiest when she was a beautiful model. Like her soul brother, Jim Morrison, she grew weary of being reknowned for physical beauty.
What ugliness? She's 44 here, and she looks great for her age, drug use or not. She just rejected her previous blonde model image to focus on her music.
JM Cooper I’m 53 and look better. You are right, she looks like a junky and used up. Addiction kills your soul and physical being. She and Jim Morrison had demons.
Awful.
way to make a good song into garbage
no talent, was pretty..
The feeling of this is very basement punk. Grimy. Dirty. You can practically smell the heroin cooking in the backstage area. But still more so than 90% of the stuff being played today. Had Nico lived she still would have been uncompromising. If not in music then in some other venues
