very educational video. Our Kirby is from the 1990's vintage. Except for bags, belts and an occasional rotor brush, nothing else. It still works great, but I will be getting into some serious service on it. At my age (82) I will be on a bench and marked muffin tins for parts and screws. The transmission is a bit noisy. Can this be worked on ??
Great video, I have a g4 from 94 that i tried to refurbish but i struggle to remove the plastic and metal part of the headlight because i want to polish all the metal
I have lost count how many Kirbys you have. Quite a lot? Maybe I should get more too because I see a lot of Kirbys in the Finnish auction site. Most are overpriced, but there is also many reasonable priced.
I don’t know if it’s just me or it’s a problem, but My G5 has a Transmission whine like that G4 does. I don’t know if the G5’s transmission is original or not, but the G6 and newer Kirbys in my experience have better sounding transmissions than the G3-G5.
@@jayambermsp8000 i did. super hot tap water and various cleaning products, whatever i had around the house. turned out great. gave it plenty of time to dry out.
I know your wheels had that bad clicking noise and stuff but you should’ve heard my g3 it had the worse sounding neutral ever the wheels sounded awful and when I brought it in To be fixed they said it was the worse sounding that they have ever had and they fix a lot of Kirby’s at the vacuum place I brought it to
@@KirbyEnthusiast Yeah, the bracket cam assembly will wear down over time and that one gear won't move like it should. The result is a low grinding noise.
It depends on what you mean by exact same motor. I have measured various differences in power draw, CFM, and rotor speed to say no. They have changed of the years.
@@VacLab No I refer that when the vacuum is off and transmission in neutral, it makes a noise like you stated in the beginning of your video. Also what causes to make the brushroll to make a buzzing noise. i posted a link to the video.
@@Javesike That clicking noise was fixed by re-greasing the "open" metal axle bearings. I've shown this in other videos (check the G3 playlist). I'll have to listen to your brushroll noise before I make a recommendation.

Yup. You can service the transmission somewhat.

I FINALLY GOT A G4!!! Im excited to get some work done with it
My stepfather's sister also has a G4 from 1996. A Kirby is worth the $1,500+ for something made in the USA, as well as their reliability!
I get them used. Grabbed a Sentria 1 back in 2018 with all attachments and shampooer for $25.
My mom surprised me with a Kirby g4 like this and i loved that gift
Enjoy!
Do you change the brushes on the motor... You were so deep into it.. why not?

Right now, I'm up to 12. Which maybe is about 8 too many. 😂
@@VacLab Nice!!
I have 6 Kirby's aswell
Fantastic video. Thank you.

You're correct, the older G's are whinier. The G7's and newer have different gearing so the transmissions are much quieter overall.
Just fiitted new Avalir transmission in my G4 on my channel , alot smother
Awesome video! I was wondering if you can wash the g4 outer cloth bag.
Yes, I have washed all the outer bags in all my Kirbys. 👍
@@VacLab Is it recommended to do it in the washing machine or by hand?
@@jayambermsp8000 I've done both. By hand if you leave the emptor attached and washing machine with the bag only.
@@VacLab Could I do the cloth only by hand? The tube bit looks fine.

My Kirby G4 handle is loose where it attaches to base, can you tell me how to tighten it?
Most Kirby handles appear loose at the base. It's normal.
Great Video i have the same Kirby G4 owed from new going to have to polish up with a buffer, giving me plenty of ideas for my up and coming channel
Can you put a Sentria or G7 transmission into a G4?
The transmissions are all the same but the gears and belt they use change around the G7 era.
Yes you can just put a avalir transmission in my g4 on my channel
My kirby g4 has 2 screw which look like torx heads screw what screwdriver do I use for it?
If they are Torx screws, then use a Torx screwdriver.

The cool thing is that it can be fixed without any parts. I'm still shocked that the transmission had two open bearings. ✌
Mine wasn’t a transmission thank goodness but they had to replace quite a few parts to fix the problem
Alot of the time the clicking is caused by excess movement in selector switch, just done a video on how to change one on my channel
@@KirbyEnthusiast Yeah, the bracket cam assembly will wear down over time and that one gear won't move like it should. The result is a low grinding noise.
Why would you replace a transmission because it's noisy?
Noisy or failed entirely.
My Kirby bag makes a whistling noise, I've checked the tube to see if there is a hole but there isn't one. What do you think it could be?
It could be a micro hole in the fill tube or emptor I suppose.
Id check the fill tube, ive just done a video on how to replace on my channel, hope this helps.

Does every kirby g series through an avalir have the exact same motor in it?
It depends on what you mean by exact same motor. I have measured various differences in power draw, CFM, and rotor speed to say no. They have changed of the years.
Can you use them on hard floors without using the hose
Yup, I do it all the time.
I personally do that all the time. However, use the hose if you have cats and don't like litter getting flung toward your leg.
How do you get rid of the squeak when you move the vacuum and what do you use to get rid of it
Not sure what you mean as there was no squeak when you move the vacuum. Are you referring to the transmission grinding?
@@VacLab No I refer that when the vacuum is off and transmission in neutral, it makes a noise like you stated in the beginning of your video. Also what causes to make the brushroll to make a buzzing noise. i posted a link to the video.
