Nice job sir!! Looks like NEW!! I bought a Heritage II in 1987, still runs great. Had to replace the motor once, just paid around $20 for labor...WOW! Can't get better than that! I got ALL the bells and whistles-shampooer, car wash attachment, etc! Recently, my wife and I bought an Avalon in 2019...financed it! It too has ALL the stuff-shampooer, pet brush for the hose, etc!! We just wanted to upgrade and we have a LOT of cats, so I'm constantly vacuuming the house. This is a great video because they were both looking a little rough, so I'm gonna try this and see how it works! Thanks!
I purchased a good used Kirby and the very first thing I noticed was a very loud high-pitched noise. Anyone with sensitive hearing would drive you out of the area quick. Since I'm hard of hearing in both ears I knew it was loud, but didn't know just how loud it really was, but others let me know super quick. It turned out to be the fan on the front of the machine had a chip in it and just the fan needed replacement. I was able to replace it myself and it was running like new again. The part was fairly cheap. I just checked and it's still about 14 to 20 bucks depending on where you buy it.
I soaked mine in a 5 gallon bucket with a gallon of CLR,worked great.I found a G4 on the curb, tore it apart and rebuilt it.but don't overdo it,it can eat up metal
Just bought a kirby Diamond today for 5 bucks. Needed a belt and a bag. Works great. This is our 4th kirby. I usually get them for free or really cheap. Clean them up and give them away.
I been finding Kirby's at thrift stores too. I got a Sentria I for $9 and I haven't seen them higher than $80 which was the cost of a Sentria II and Ultimate G that I found. And usually they run perfect and all of the ones I bought only needed belts and bags for them.
This vacuum was manufactured in 1998. If you pause the video at 25:05 you can see the date wheel. I recently bought a kirby sentria ii and have been cleaning it up. The date wheel on mine says 12 which means 2012. Just like this 1, mine was stored in a storage unit and the metal looks just like this 1 did. Got most of the tarnish off now just need to polish it.
I have this model kirby. I think the whistle you were hearing was simply due to the fact that you forgot to ratchet down the unit to the proper height for your carpet pile, creating a little extra air flow (whistle) under the unit. I think the motor is fine. Powered up and inflated the bag perfectly. Nice job. I subscribed.
It still sounds different from my other Kirby in both positions, but it seems to be fine. I took it to a shop to improve the polish and to check the motor. All fine. It went to a friend for a wedding gift and she filled the bag cleaning her new house! Remember, new carpets have factory dust and fibers and a house that has had work done will have a lot of dust inside. She is very happy with it! I did end up finding two Sentria 1s, so that is something!
Indeed! I will do a more in-depth video about them later. They have a ton of features. I am glad that I have been able to expose you to something you would not have ever looked up normally!
I'm glad you liked it! I hope to show some of the computer guys that vacuums can be pretty interesting. I imagine that I may be able to show you that old computer stuff is interesting too!
just got a g7d for free trans wasn't working. it was in pieces. got it back together with only a few leftover screws. got to look around to see where they go.
I have the orbital sander for my G4. It's nice to have. I've been meaning to polish one of my kirby's. I've never had a polished one. I would probably polish my G4 or one of my Heritages II's
I did a “hack” on mine because I don’t wanna spend $35 on a 3 pack of Kirby sentria g10 bags. A guy I work for used to have a g3 Kirby but gave it to the vacuum repair guy when it broke because it was too expensive for him to have it fixed. So he gave me a bunch of g3 bags and also some attachments. I made the g3 bag fit on my g10. Cause like you shown here it has a push and twist mount on the g3, but on the g10 it has a place on the bottom of the cardboard where it latches on and then you fold a part of the cardboard over the top of the dirt hose to keep it in place. I just took a little bit of packing tape and stuck it on the sides of the cardboard and wrapped it around the back of the dirt hose to make it stay on. It works well. Because I’m sick of reusing the same bag. It’s on its third use and it smells horrible. I do wanna save one of the g3 bags I have though just to keep as an original piece. Because they’re all original bags from when he bought his Kirby brand new.
Just take the rubber bumper on the Power nozzle and put it in some warm water and take a nylon wool to it... just a few seconds and it’s gone... also you always want to fit the belt and secure it using the belt lifter before placing the metal plate back on. the reasoning for this is so you can position the belt correctly in the brush...
Flitz is ok... but what some of us use is a 3 stage buffing rouge bars. Cut, Clean and mirror finish. That is also what KIRBY uses at both factories at Cleveland OH and Andrews TX. It works a lot better but it is a lot more time consuming, so some shops do use Flitz.
WRONG! remove the shell and light hood(easy). place in sink with hot soap water. use wet sandpaper 1000grit. sand in and out of water. after dark spots are gone , switch to 2000 grit, again wet sand in/out water. after dull silver shine..THEN use you blue magic or mother's. this will give factory finish on ANY year kirby. for a mirror shine finish with green compound on buffer wheel.
no mirror shine with mothers or blue magic.. Wenol Blue is a mirror shine, guaranteed.. I'm a vintage exotic car collector and also own a historic house museum which was my grandparents house I grew up in. We use Wenol on all our collections.. In our historic house museum we have a fully restored 517 Kirby that does have Hollywood history. We fully restored this vacuum from ground up. We tried the Mothers and Blue Magic on it, both did a fair job but we were not satisfied. Wenol gave it a night and day difference as its truly now is a mirror perfect shine.. We use Wenol Blue on a regular weekly basis with this vacuum as we still use this vacuum almost every day and I couldn't be more satisfied with the results. The trick is when polishing from first stage dull (after sanding), you need to get your RPM's up when polishing. Dremel is too small and does a very poor job. What is needed is a buffing wheel on an Angle Grinder with adjustable speeds. Very small parts can be done on a dremel. Hope this help you out as well as anyone reading this.. Ohio Love...
@@gamblefamily768 well i just reshined a barn find coleman 242 (1951) to mirror using mother's and green compound on drillpress buffer. Ill try youe Wenol based on you being a fellow Ohioan suffering from Dewine syndrome!
@@crabtrap I'm actually searching for a better product than Wenol to be honest. I want to take it to the max in mirror shine, the best of the best...I have to get the best of the best considering the historic house museum. Polishing is just like buffing car paint. You have "cuts" and must work your way through the cuts. Like sanding, you start low grid and work your way up.. Same thing, but you do need RPM's but not too much RPM's but more RPM's than a drill or standard buffer... ua-cam.com/video/iXcjdmcmkfI/v-deo.html BTW.. never thought that id ever watch a video on a vacuum
turns out im wrong
you really know how to make something that seems so mundane interesting
Kirby's are anything but mundane. Once you have one, it changes everything. You can't go back to cheap vacuums.
now that i finished the video these things are an engineering marvel
they truly are one of the few things that are still made to last
Amen.

You watched a video on a vacuum? Wow, Kirbys have attachments for EVERYTHING!
Definitely doing this when I get my neighbors G7
Can’t wait to see the next video!! I love my Avalir!! I use my 1979 Kirby Tradition with its Handi Bulter to polish my 11 Kirbys!!
I'm glad you liked it! I hope to show some of the computer guys that vacuums can be pretty interesting. I imagine that I may be able to show you that old computer stuff is interesting too!

Thanks! I love Kirby's.

A year later... please do that video! Just scored me a $25 Kirby that I'm restoring :)
Clean microfiber cloths would have worked so much better for wiping off the polish. But very nice to use to use the handy butler!
Great video, but I can’t stop hearing Jeff Goldblum giving a tutorial 😂🙌🏻
So I see you hooking up that nice tool to the Avalir series, wonder if I can find one for my Avalir 2
When I saw Handi-Butler, I initially thought it would be one of the old ones driven by a belt (models 509 to Heritage).
I have the orbital sander for my G4. It's nice to have. I've been meaning to polish one of my kirby's. I've never had a polished one. I would probably polish my G4 or one of my Heritages II's
Cool! I still need to get the Sander for the Avalir because reasons...
I'm starting to question if vintage tech and vacuums go together. My friend got me into both. And now I've owned more vacuum's than vintage computers.
Well, old ones or old-style ones at least!
You have not picked up even a one bid of dirt of that floor, since you haven’t lowered the head to the floor, using the side lowering mechanism.
Nice job 👌👌

Awesome! Thank you!
If I'm not mistaken, Kirby technicians officially use Flitz to polish vacuums. I found some at Ace Hardware. Worked wonders on my 1989 Legend II.
That sounds about right!

I never got that dremel thing or the snout piece with my new vac!
neat gizmo, but can't beat a real buffing wheel
The dremel is a separate item, the snout should have been included for when you are using that machine in blower mode.
Where would you buy ethernet cable that long?too reach your garage.
Do cork in your st
Has anyone ever told you you sound a lot like Jeff Goldblum?
Many, actually. But never in real life!
100 dollars. I'm in cleveland and u find kirbies everywhere for like 20 bucks.
That's probably why I can't find old Kirbys where I live (late reply zazaza)
