    Got a deal on mine, holds 4 deeps for only 34 dollars, its a crank> but can put a electric drill on it . Take off the handle, put it on the drill chuck, and off ya go! If i ever get time, i got a washing machine going to make a extractor out of. Got my new mower in. Man This one is a cutting machine, Craftsman T140 there Excellent! I cut some Knee high wet grass yesterday with it> out does the pony 10 X better. It went right threw it. Got the front bumper and hitch on, waiting on the lights! All my mowers got front bumpers, hitches, cigarette lighters, and lights. Mandatory with me!

    One really big improvement I've found to improve my extracting process is to buy or build a tub that holds frames that have been uncapped. This way you can be continuously uncapping frames while your extractor is spinning. Once it's done, you can fill it right back up with frames. Speeds up the process a TON!!!!

    • @Matt-dc8lp
      @Matt-dc8lp 3 роки тому +3

      Btw, it took me a long time to find a plastic tub of the right dimensions for this. There are metal uncapping tanks that you can buy from the major bee equipment sellers but they cost $800! I built one using these tubs and some stainless steel rod for

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  3 роки тому +3

      That's a good idea. I've noticed my bottleneck is the uncapping. I was going to get a second uncapping tank for this year, but it wouldn't have mattered. With the social distance thing, it was only myself and my wife working on them. I could have used a second uncapping station anyway with the amount of cappings I had. I worked on them all week before I pulled the honey off them and got 50 lbs with the last 3 pulls. Thanks for watching.

      @@JeromeBeeFarm Last season using one of these uncapping tanks, a harmony farms uncapper and a maxant 20 frame radial extractor (does 10 deep or 20 medium) I extracted 25 gallons by myself in about 4 hours. I was very sore and tired afterwards, but glad it was done. The harmony farms uncapper is also another great time saver vs a heated knife. Less mess, less filtered cappings, and your wrist doesn't hurt.

    I have been harvesting honey as a hobbyist for 10-years now and I wish I would have seen your video when I started back then. Excellent video, there is a lot of useful and important information on lessons learned for a honey harvest. It appears you and I have taken a similar journey. As far as buckets go, the ones from the big-box-stores are cr@p. I'm involved in the construction industry and I've learned the hard way why they are inexpensive. I get my honey buckets for free from bakeries that are going to be tossed into the landfill. As in the painting industry, you can't have buckets that are going to break and I found the buckets for the bakery industry hold up to the weight of honey. That being said, I will never ever lift them by the handle. I was taught to uncap the cappings by scratching with the uncapping fork and I could not figure out why I had so much wax in my extractor and honey, what a mistake. Thanks for producing and sharing your video.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Billy. I’m always worried lifting them with the handle. I don’t fill them near as full either. About 50 lbs max is where they end up. Yeah, it’s a fork, not a scratcher. lol. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @@JeromeBeeFarm yes sir my season did not turn out the way I had predicted. We had an extremely hot 2 1/2 to 3 weeks with no rain right about the time the white clover was in bloom and everything dried up. I had a huge amount of nectar being stored and when that hot spell hit and all the natural sources dried up the bees ate every bit of nectar and honey that they had started to cap. So instead of the 5000 to 6000 pounds of honey I was expecting I ended up with 1025 pounds of honey. So now it will depend on our fall flow and if they put away any extra that I can harvest.

    Darren, thanks so much for this video!!! You taught me a few things in this one. You know how to use the uncapping fork correctly. So many scratch the cappings with it. In the last week I saw a video where a certified master beekeeper was scratch the cappings off. I remember your cracked leaking bucket last year. I bought buckets at Lowe’s since then and they were a different brand from the ones that you had crack open. If I buy another extractor I now know what I want to look for. Thanks again!

    I'm leaving a good bit of honey on the hives this year. There is only so much we can consume or sale out the front door. Family will get big jars this year for Christmas! Pennsylvania requires special regulations to retail which I do not want to deal with. Have seven 8-frame medium supers in the freezer full of capped honey. Some will go back on the 41 hives come fall if anyone is short and some will be held back for those hives that burn through their winter stores too quickly. Six or seven of the hives are mating nucs and I hope to sell off those queens before fall. Been a very good year!

    We just have a couple hives and cut the cappings into a 5 gallon bucket with a mesh bag for straining paint. We put the cappings in the bag into our extractor and put it on slow and it slings it out but probably not as well as it could. I wonder if you could rig something up like that with a couple mesh bags to balance the weight. Ours is a tangential extractor though and it has a fair amount of support along the edges of the baskets to hold the bag. It may be more effort than it's worth though but may be worth trying.

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Brian. I would just let it hang in the bags over a bucket or something and let gravity do the work. Keep it plenty warm and move it around every day or so until it quits producing. The extractor thing sounds like an out of balance washing machine effect. That also puts strain on the motor and bottom bushing/bearings when it's out of balance like that. It would be more pain than it's worth to me to try to balance it out. But I suppose it's a doable thing. lol Thanks for watching.

    I hope you got some rest after your 4 days of manual labor. We don't have our 20 year old bodies anymore. LOL Boy, you sure have a nice extractor. Love the smoothness and controls. Good tip on the pails, I checked mine in the middle of the video and was happy to see 90 ml on the bottom. Great tips here - didn't realize the hot knife could work that well. Now you have to figure out how to sell almost twice as much honey as last year. Take care Jerome.

    Thanks for sharing the whole process. Quick question for you, what do you do with your frames, how to you store them during winter? Also, a different question! What do you do with all those bees in those supers when winter comes? Do they just go down there and squeeze all together?

    • @JeromeBeeFarm
      @JeromeBeeFarm  3 роки тому

      I store the frames indoors over winter and the bees downsize their population to overwinter and all live in the bottom two boxes. I leave plenty of honey down below for them to use over winter. Thanks for watching.

Hoping the fall flow kicks in and get us enough for the bees for winter. I’d rather they had enough than me trying to pull any. But if we get some to bring to the table I won’t be upset. 😃

Nice increase over the prior year! I'm interested to see how you handle the wax cappings, you probably have more honey trapped in them after the gravity drain. Hey Noah. Thickness is basically a function of temperature. Also, crush and strain has all kinds of resistance to flow with the crushed comb, and straining, and comb getting in the strainer, so all that is working against you.
