Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey- Paul & Linda McCartney (Guitar Cover)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 сер 2024
- Thanks @wmvansise8797 for lending me the cherry red Greco 335 clone!
Paul wrote Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey in late 1970, and recorded it on November 6 1970 in New York. It was released on the 1971 album Ram, credited to Paul and Linda McCartney
Like A Day In the Life and the Abbey Road medley, the song is comprised of several short compositions- We're So Sorry, Hands Across the Water, and Live a Little/Be a Gypsy. This is how they were titled early on, but by the time of recording it was split into two parts-
Uncle Albert 0:00-2:17
Admiral Halsey 2:17-4:53
Both Uncle and Admiral were recorded on the same day, but split into two sessions:
Uncle Albert's backing track was comprised of Paul on his Martin D-28 (strummed with no pick), Denny Seiwell on drums, and Hugh McCracken on his Gibson ES-335 electric guitar. After a satisfactory take, Hugh re-recorded his lead electric guitar
ALL of the guitars in this section are in Drop-D tuning, including Paul's acoustic: DADGBE
Then, either Hugh or Paul overdubbed the doubled electric guitars that are heard during the thunderstorm section- 0:28
The master tapes list Paul recording a guitar part through a leslie speaker somewhere in Uncle Albert, but my guess is that this was erased when they mixed the song and that we are hearing Hugh's doubled 335. The thunderstorm guitars do not sound like they are being fed through a leslie
Admiral Halsey's backing track is even more confusing. We know that Paul played upright piano, Denny on drums, and the master tapes list Hugh on electric guitar. But to me, the electric on Admiral sounds just like Paul's style of playing. Hugh most likely played his Guild acoustic guitar, and Paul his Epiphone Casino
My theory, and the lineup I went with for this cover is thus:
Uncle Albert-
Paul on Martin D-28
Hugh on Gibson ES-335
Admiral Halsey-
Hugh on Guild acoustic
Paul on Epiphone Casino
I'm using my 1969 Martin 00-18 for all the acoustic guitars in this cover. Paul didn't use a pick on Uncle Albert, but on Admiral we do hear a pick being used
For Uncle Albert, I'm using a 1970's Greco 335 clone into my 1965 Fender Bassman. The Greco is similar to a 335, but is fully hollow instead of semi hollow. Hugh's 335 was a late 1960's Gibson
For Admiral Halsey, I'm using my 2021 Epiphone Casino USA into the 65 Bassman.
We hear a phaser effect on the Admiral electric guitar. This is especially interesting, because barely any phaser pedals existed in 1970. It's possible that this was achieved with tape flanging, a technique used as early as revolver/pepper in 66-67. The only phaser-type effects they could've used are a leslie speaker, a uni-vibe or a maestro PS-1 phaser pedal. It doesn't sound like a leslie, or a univibe pedal to me. And the PS-1 was released to the market around 1971. Maybe it was just tape flanging?
Either way, I'm using my 1975 MXR Phase 100 pedal to achieve this phaser effect heard on Admiral. It has two knobs, speed and a 4-way switch to go between different settings. I set mine on the most subtle setting, the switch set all the way to the left. The speed is knob is set just below noon
My Gear:
1969 Martin 00-18
1974 Greco 335 copy
2021 Epiphone Casino USA (Royal Tan Finish)
1975 MXR Phase 100 pedal (Admiral Halsey)
1965 Fender Bassman
Neumann TLM-103

Ram On
@@brixenlang3207when I'm sixty four (GB)
Ram is such an under-appreciated album!
Probably my favourite McCartney solo song. Whimsical and silly, yet sentimental and extremely melodic. Seemingly unfocused, yet driven and wildly adventurous. And the way he paints landscapes with music is just to die for. After the thunderstorm effect, he paints the most glorious sunrise with simple yet somehow intricate means of arrangement. And you nailed it all. Thank you! :)
I couldn’t agree more! Thanks
Ahhh, Lord Ithkos (?) with a superb comment!
@@sampopkinAre you Paul sure that Paul used his Casino? He had the Gibson Firebird at the time. He could’ve either used the Casino, Firebird, or Telecaster
@@beatlesfan2884 yes, master tapes list paul using his Casino
Beautiful synopsis
In addition to the excellent playing, the sweater vest is very McCartney
It's his vest from Magical Mystery Tour if I'm not mistaken
More Ram please
yessss
Greco is the best Japanese manufacturer that is cheap but gives the best sound
When you play it, it's a shining tone🧌
agreed, but ryohei kanayama has a similar one but it's tokai and looks 100% like a gibson es-335
The tone on that 335 is IDENTICAL! Felt like I was listening to the isolated guitar tracks! Well done yet again 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You are the best person to express not only the Beatles' sound but also McCartney's solo's sound! The Greco ES-335 sounds just as special as the Gibson.
Thanks!
YESSS! Even got the guitar scrapes! I always hear them in the song but never see someone actually playing it in covers!!! Amazing cover Sam!!!
Alright Sam this tears it. Your next cover is going to be the ENTIRE Ram album. Seriously though amazing job! Hoping for more Ram stuff in the future!
I will absolutely cover the whole album at some point!
That’s good mate
Thanks Paul McCartney
@@sampopkin no worries.
This song shifts gears several times. One of my favorites!
Потрясающе!!!!! Не понимаю, кто больший гений: Сэр Пол или Сэм, исполнитель кавера, сумевший разгадать тайну этого музыкального шедевра!!!!!!!!
SAM RAM LET'S GOOOOO I love ram sm this is gonna be a good era of Popkin
Great Job Thanks. Probably this song is in my Paul`s top five songs.
This is the solo song that captures the Beatles sound best. Lovely work :)
I came for a George tune (What is life), found Paul and Linda. Sub.
Thanks in advance for the tunes I'll learn.
excellent channel NY Sam!
You absolutely nailed it! It's still interesting to see Paul's strumming technique, your thumb must hurt haha. Also, I love the Paul waistcoat!
I don’t know how Paul had such endurance with his thumb haha. But I adjusted my technique so it doesn’t hurt as much, using the side of the fingertip
@@sampopkin yea i tried and it hurts as hell
Paul was definitely a genius, and thanks to your talent, we can see the details and evoque a whole era. Thanks Sam! Can you make smile away?
Great playing on this, my favorite piece by Paul in his solo years.
YES! YES! YES! I love this song dude. Also, have you done Free as a Bird or Real love [blank] yet? They are challenging to get everything right but they are beautiful songs. Anyways, great job as always man I love your videos ❤👍
I haven’t yet! Will do soon
That es335 tone is so good
These are done with so much love and respect. It really shows. Love your hard work.
OMG, MY FAVOURITE SONG!
the perfect song for me to cure any sad mood
Macca just knows stuff that no one else knows you know? Like small things like where he holds the F chord in the ‘hands across the water’ section but the electric ascends F, Ab, Bb, C with the D shape. Anyone else writing that part would have the acoustic doing the same thing but with barre chords.
Oh my god, oh my god
Paul's amazing yet simple guitar playing in this song really makes the song very enjoyable and memorable.
no way just listened to this album for the first time about a week ago and have listened to it on repeat since and now you post this!
Nice tone on the Greco. And nice vest! It's all about the little touches.
That Greco is bad ass!
Oh man this is OUTSTANDING work
YESSSSSS, FINALLLYYYY
OMG this is my favourite from Solo McCartney! This was so amazingly well played!
Well done! You got that hollow body right on. The tone is perfect.
That was a lot of fun Sam! Great work! All of the tasty electric guitar parts for this song were the work of the late Hugh McCracken who died in 2013 age 70....Paul has often said that Hugh made this track the hit that it was....Interesting note: Hugh's repeating lick, at the 00:27 mark, subsequently turns up in other songs (in case it sounds familiar to you!): "Her Town Too" by James Taylor-J.D. Souther (guitarist Waddy Wachtel steals it as the main lick to the song!), and "You're No Good"(Outro) (Rondstadt version)....there may be others~I think Hugh's is the 1st appearance of it in this McCartney song though...
Vest twins ❤
I was literally listening to this morning on my way to school and thinking I wish someone had a good cover of the guitar part!!! Thank youuuu
Thanks Evy! It’s gotta be my favorite vest 🐏
Hey, I've got that exact same vest. Great playing. For some reason I feel like butterpie now...
🤘idk what butter pie is but I want it too lol
A butter pie ? ❤😂
Great as always! Love the guitars on this song. McCartney jazz!
You think it would’ve been a Beatles song if they didn’t break up? Or maybe Winston would’ve shot down another granny song 😉
this is so accurate!!! amazingly played! props to you
YES SAM! I absolutely love the RAM album, this song is one of my favorites, you played it wonderfully! The song is so heartwarming yet thrilling in some spots, the way McCartney composed these song(s) is absolutely mesmerizing.
Your videos motivated me to get a Doctor Robert pedal, and now you're playing the same Greco SA-550 that I play! Tones on this video might make me trade the "bassman tone stack" on my deluxe reverb for the real thing...sounds phenomenal.
🤘nice collection you’ve got
Hard to express what it means to see and hear this. Fantastic is as close as words come, but they fail me. Thank you.
Oh man I played this song so many times growing up. Spectacular - the sound on this is so good (as usual)!
One of my favorite paul songs!
@@sampopkinThe sound on the Greco/335 is amazing
Macca the genius
YES! RAM!
GREAT CHORDS WELL PLAYED 👍
Finally a cover of a song from Ram! Definitely my favourite solo album from any of the beatles, you've done a wonderful job mate! I'm hoping for a cover of monkberry, the most underrated song on the album.
This song really makes Ram the first Indie album ever
Excellent. That Greco sounds and looks great
This is truly awesome. The only youtuber in the world doing this hard work. I feel like listening the original song.
I wish Paul play this soon coz he never played the song and it was a Hit N1 of Billboard Hot 100!! Thanks and greetings from Argentina!!
I love Ram!!!
Love that song..youre showing us a lot of sublities and nuances of this song..all the lost denny lane stuff..
This is a great choice.
These are so accurate & truly incredible
I really love your covers and your McCa's outfit is stunning
All the guitar work on this amazing song has perplexed me since it came out. AMAZING video as usual. It blows my mind that, in addition to all the leads, you figured out every chord (accurately)! Thank you for this!
so good
Maybe in future. Let Me Roll It. With that wicked tone?
Oh yeahhh
Love it.
Very demystifying.
I love this song so much!! I'd like to see what you can do with monkberry moon delight... 🙂
Excellent... and so precise as always 😊
All the best
knarf from France 🎸🇨🇵
Your cover has me Smiling Away 😊
Great job Sam !
Beautiful cover, wow! Everything nailed down again to a tee! As someone else pointed - I felt like I was listening to isolated tracks.
Nice how he's using muted strings as a percussive instrument in the 2nd section.
Wonderful! My first every record purchase, a 45. Very nicely done Sam!
Classic Paul. Beautiful guitar fills too. Great cover.
Love the sweater!!!
Best video you've done yet
Beautiful bro 👌👌👌🎺🎺🎺🎺📞
That's awesome instrumental!!
😮 Beatiful! ❤
He Ain’t Heavy, He’s my Uncle (those who know, know)

Perfection.
Love it keep it up
How you manage to get the exact tones on your videos is so incredible.
Great work!! It'd be great if you play Smile Away too!
Nice work, as always. That Greco semi-hollow(?) has a VERY nice tone(!)
Fully hollow actually
Sam🎉
uncle Albert nice guitar play!
