I have to say, although the Game Gear is a underrated handheld game, it still put up a great fight during the Console Wars. But I have no problem playing games on the Game Boy without Color!
good fight? It only sold 10 million compared to the Gameboys 110 million. The battery life was just too short and the game selection wasn't that great.

@@dannysummers4591 Game Gear still did better than the Atari Lynx, which sold 3 million, and only had somewhere between 60 to 80 games released. Game Gear's Game Selection's still not the best, of course. I'd still rather have Game Boy, to play Wario Land or something like that.

There was a Sega Nomad in 1995. A 16 bit handheld that played all the Genesis tittles!. Nindedorks had to wait another five years for that steamy crappiola that was GB color.

Nah in all actuality, game gear was far superior to game boy, problem is they just didn't have the games. Although it had great games they didn't have the licensing Nintendo did.

Theres one simple reason why they wont return to making hardware: the real Sega is long gone.
Sega shot themselves in the *feet* way too much. Mostly between the Sega/Mega CD, 32x, and Saturn. They burned their customer base too badly, all by pulling support for SCD and 32x in short order, *then* pulling support for the Saturn not 3 years after its introduction in North America.
The 32x should never have existed, at least not in the way it did, so far as reasons for supporting its company goes.
I still have my Game Gear and played X-Men on it. Such a great machine. Bad thing Is, it ate up the batteries too fast and though colored.... outside it was hard to see the screen clear.
I recommend you pickup an Analogue Pocket along with a Game Gear adaptor. You can play your older Game Gear games on that with full bright color and it has a rechargeable USB-C. Thank me later. Haha.

Right? Not only is it unauthorized footage, it’s also free advertising. Seeing this commercial 20-some years later I didn’t remember it was showing Mario Land 2 in full sound!
Wrong, this was superior advertising; only the new-era guilty-by-association communist mentality of the young and stupid believes what you've said here. The truth is, it's always good to show why your competitor sucks, no matter what. No, not "all press is good press". Especially when the Game Boy was a crappy, inferior product.
BUUUT it worked! Sega showed its competitors products in its 90s ads regularly.

If Sega had put this much effort into making their system actually worth owning, they might have actually stood a chance.
I think they'd actually tried _too_ hard to compete. The Game Gear is essentially a miniaturized Master System with some subtle improvements, but still so similar that it actually has an SMS compatibility mode (the official add-on to let you use this was the Master Gear, which is simply a pinout adapter). However, it was created far too soon for that level of tech _not_ to guzzle power - the Master System itself was still alive, after all. In the end, Nintendo's avoidance of the cutting edge allowed them to win largely on the sheer difference in battery life.
Sega's commercials and other advertisements were a bit *too* edgy. "What's blue, and fast, and pisses on everything?" ... I showed that to someone in his mid 30s some months back, and he said "the idea of Sonic pissing on everything at Mach 1 isn't very appealing." Imagine that sort of response from a parent in 1991 - 1994.
They literally did. They had solid games, a backlight, colour, etc. People always complain about battery life but it's got the same battery life as the Switch & nobody complains about it's battery life. All you need to do is get rechargeable batteries & boom, problem solved.

Man, I had forgotten all about this commercial! That one took me back, way back, and brought back a lot of great memories, too!! I miss the '90s, and feel so fortunate enough to have spent my teen years during that decade, and my childhood during the '80s. I know most people will say that every one says that about whatever the decade was that they came up in as well, but it's the truth. Everything was better back during those two decades, everything...music, TV shows, movies. It really seems that the last great, or at least, good, but most definitely, better, decade was the 2010's. After that, and since then, the 2020's have been nothing but a pure, and constant, s**tshow. Lol. Once 2019 hit, it's all just been downhill since then...the s**t hit the fan, and the World, and this Country especially, have all continued to go down the toilet, which is extremely sad. Oh well, at least there's still videos, here on UA-cam, to remind us of the better times, and years, too. Here's to the past...🍻.
The FITS this ad used to give me as a child. That fact that they're in color doesn't change the fact that every single game on this system was garbage not worth the chips they were printed on.
Nintendo did it smart. They easily could’ve the gameboy color with a backlit screen in the 90s but they always went with something within reach and made the most of it.

Both are great consoles the game gear has a lighted screen and color but drains the batteries in only a couple of hours while the gameboy better games is more compact and has a longer battery life
Later found out that fluorescent screen was the culprit. Someone replaced it with an LCD screen and it works much longer (7-8 hrs).
They should have called it the battery eater!

Does anyone else find it funny how in the 90s, handheld games evolved from going black and white to being in color, then in the 2000s console games reverted from being in color to being in black, white and sometimes brown?
Indeed, or green, in the case of Bethesda’s first attempt at a Fallout game, as I didn’t realize until after seeing folks mod the PC version to remove or replace it that Todd Howard decided to pull a Matrix and have this weird shader effect tint everything with varying gradients of green while the game world itself is largely dull browns and greys.

The game gear was cool and had pretty fun and enjoyable games, but the only problem was the batteries, which they took 3 - 4 hours depending of the battery, but I'm not saying that the original GB didn't had color and a light screen, the battery on the gameboy lasted longer, both consoles are awesome btw
The game gear had a literal fluorescent light bulb in it to backlight the screen, that sucked the battery life down easily.
However today there are tons of mods that you can perform on the motherboard to make it look better and last nearly three times as long with LEDs instead
