SPINE ALIGNING a golf shaft has a little bit of controversy around it. I'd like to do a series of tests and spine align shafts in different orientations to get a map of how much influence it has on the flight
I've done this test 4 times with the same results ...spine at front spins less an launches lower ...what I HAVN'T DONE yet is test top and bottom...

The PXG Gen 5 Driver is a great bit of kit, fast off the face and great noise. It doesn't quite take my Cleveland Launcher XL Driver out of the golf bag however.
The Grafalloy Blackbird is surprisingly stable for a lightweight, 50g, mid kick shaft. I'm pleasantly surprised

Great to see someone deeper dive into this. Always thought about it..I've always put mine behind the target line but if forward is more left bias then that could be a winner.
I'm not convinced it's left biased!! Just my natural shot comes out more consistently :)
Isn't the word 'spline'? That's the term for the same thing in graphite fly rods. I've never heard 'spine' used this way. Maybe golf is different.
In golf it is "spine" says it on the tool I use and every article on the matter :)
realigning the shafts in my driver, 3 wood, and 2 hybrid with the spine/natural bend point facing my target. Interested how it will change my ball striking and flight. FYI.. My Callaway XR16 shaft was originally set up 90 degrees from the spine/NBP spot, so that will be interesting.
Very good! I'm a big fan of that at the top end of the bag especially ....I don't think you'll notice anything on an individual shot ...it's more the grouping over a whole round of golf that would be tidier, in my opinion, and in my data testing over the last 4 years :)
In the linked video here, I feel like I got the shots my swing put on the ball more often and had far fewer anomalies where the shaft just doesn't bend and release back to the same point on the odd shot with the spine not being at the front
@@FredzGolf based off your video, I might need to put my driver back up in loft.. currently play a 9 deg down 1 deg but the change might put the loft and spin down too low. Luckily Callaway leaves the shaft in the same orientation and you just rotate the collars. We will see how it works

I recently got a new Tensei shaft and put in in a bearing spine finder. With the butt end in the finder and rotating on the bearing, the shaft definitely flips and wants to rotate to one point on the shaft. Was watching other videos and people talking that this really "might" only find the natural bow in the shaft, and I think they were right... When I spin with the bearings on the butt and single bearing the tip it definitely wants to go to the before mentioned point.. but if I say put the two bearings on the middle the shaft wants to spin to two spots about 90 degrees from the other point. I'm thinking the first is the natural bow and the two points are the actual spine... Which one has more influence on placement and shaft performance, I don't know
Interesting, I'll have to have a go at different points... I'd say the natural bend point would be more relevant to how the shaft behaves in a golf swing but that's not based on any facts, just opinion - Do you mean to put pressure on a smaller mid section of the shaft?
@@FredzGolf are you asking if I mean to put pressure during the swing or testing? While testing.. move the two bearing spine finder about 1/3 to 1/2 from the butt and ex the tip line you normally would with the single bearing.. on the shat I had, it eliminated the strong spot from the bow and seemed to show the spine with two spots 180 degrees from each other.
Really interesting. Have you ever done FLO of your driver shaft? I tend to favour that (just with a laser attached to an old drill chuck on the end of the shaft) over spine aligning.
No, I've not tried that! I'll have to give it a go :)
@@FredzGolf i think flowing is basically the spine at 12 slightly adjusted. from my experience.

If the whole set is spine or FLO'd in the same place, you'd get consistency through the bag 🎒...any of the processes, I'd rather have more conformity 😁

When you are searching for the spine at the end of the video, is the shaft spinning to the spine or the natural bend point.? I think spinning on the bearings is finding the natural bend point and the spine is 90 degrees from that
I think the natural bend point and the spine are the same place ....could be a difference of opinion
Imagine doing it with a really curved shaft under pressure, it would want to curve in its easiest natural shape
Imagine doing it with the spine side not bending and the opposite side bending lots ....it wouldn't spring to the side 🤔
Occasionally, you do get 2 spines on a shaft, not often, and about 180⁰ to one another (tends to be on cheaper shafts tbf)
In 14 years, I've had veeeeery few shafts with no spine
@@FredzGolfthanks for the reply ..i understand what you are saying. I guess the natural bend point could have the the hardest point to bend 180 from it. I have been watching many videos and people are calling the spine the firmest spot to bend, so maybe it could be the same thing. But I have also seen videos where the shaft spins to two spots that are 180 degrees from each other. On this case I would think the hardest spot to bend would be 90 degrees from these marks.
I just recently spine aligned and reshafted all my woods. Hit them for the first time today. I either had the best swing ever, it's placebo, or it really matters because I hit the ball at the range better than I ever have. I never ever draw or hook the ball.. it's always a fade or slice... Today I was launching balls straight in front of me with a nice draw on them . 2 Hybrid, 3 wood, and driver. Launch seemed to be a little low compared to before.. but I guess that's expected on a draw vs a fade where the face is usually more open. The flex of the spine aligned shaft may deloft the clubs a bit like in the video as well. I've watched dozens of videos that say spine aligning or flowing doesn't matter, well maybe it doesn't matter for people that are already really good but it seemed to matter for me.
Ooh I love that! ...I 100% swear by it ...for the reasons you say and its consistent in many places to see the changes you have displayed!!
@@FredzGolf feel off the face felt a little softer for each club than I'm used to... but again I'm assuming that might be expected as well. I guess now I just need to work on the ball placement to get the correct kick from the shaft.
@JAW_73 yeah that makes sense ...little less deflection coming up the shafts - what's happening with flight relative to target?
@@FredzGolf ball was ending up left of my target just because I wasn't used to the right to left movement. I would say most balls started where I was aiming. I'll have to pay more attention to it next time.
Would be nice to see the same test with the spine at the top vs bottom and compare that to the front vs back results.
I just need 4 matching shafts and a lot of time :) I want to do that and also add a test subject and do it all blind again and see if there's consistencies to the theory ...working on it, but will take some time to get all the right bits in the right place
And I want to do it on an iron as well, which will be easier to be fair
@@FredzGolf I recently discovered my Callaway driver shaft has the spine (natural bend point) set up at 12 o'clock, facing up. So when I'm swinging I'm essentially bending the stiffer plane. I was thinking of rotating it to see how it felt.. Of course it will not give me the correct loft and face angle settings unless I completely remove the adapter and reinstall it.
