    1. Pain ceiling (You are capable of more than what you think, expand the cave)
    2. Rest is key
    3. Know when to quit
    4. The confident mind (A knowledge of what one is capable of doing - Confidence)
    a. Bring in constructive memories from the past
    b. Be careful about the stories you tell yourself about the present (A belief about yourself)
    c. How do you think about the future? (Become the director of those short films)
    5. Trials develop strength (You're not going to improve by doing things that are easy)
    6. Calmness brings triumph (Like catching a feather, ego is an enemy)
    7. The main thing (Keep the main thing the main thing, find a role that truly fulfils you)
    8. Perfection is the enemy of the good
    9. You aren't what you do (Decouple who you are from what you do)

    I have this mantra with me.
    Let logic be with me;
    Reasoning with my actions;
    Temperance with my emotions;
    And wisdom with my nature.
    I know that I'm still in the process of acquiring this, but I also do believe that being confident by knowing my capacity will be able for me to attain this.
    Memento Mori people. 💜

    The 20 hour plus races I’ve done are immensely cleansing. The struggle against your mind, against your demons becomes very real. Your body hurts, you are doubting yourself, your power to lie to yourself is removed. You are left in a raw, primal state… The world, for better or worse, is opened to you. Pain brings life to your struggle.

    Great clips! There were such great gems here. Stoicism really seems to lend itself to ultrarunning. Hours spent in your head, talking yourself through excuses and worries, dismissing what you can't control, being in the moment, taking each mile as it comes and managing your mind, body, and equipment in the best way each mile for the best possible outcome. I need to add some sayings from the great stoics to my list of mantras to help get me through.

    This just did a lot for me - thank you very much! I strained a muscle in my leg and I can't run at the moment, which is really frustrating.
    But Stoicism is a great way to deal with that situation. Hard to put into actual practice, but videos like this help A LOT. Especially Mr. Zinsser's points really speak to me.

    1:24 -- I’m hearing this idea of pain cave and felt inspired to say that PAIN is a signal of the body that I’ve heard defined as ‘pay attention, integrate now’…is pushing the body that far a kind thing? I might be on the opposite side--but that’s alarming!

    Ryan, top level sprinters like Bolt are putting in hours each day to to find at extra .01 of a second on the track doing reps, drills, technique, starts, activation and in the gym doing weights, plyo's and at home with nutrition, reviewing race videos, and rest.

    Just a suggestion, I'd rather have seen the athletes train and run instead of you training and running. You get enough facetime when we see you writing and signing the books and interviewing the athletes, so I feel the shots of you exercising are overkill

    The idea of controlling your inner monologue is where this falls apart for me. It can't be controlled. We evolved to lean negative. You have to learn to persevere DESPITE that negative inner monologue that we all experience sometimes. Just like you can't stop a trash talker. Your brain is the ultimate trash talker.

    Bro I very much appreciate all of your stuff. But please don't use a stamp when you autograph a book. That's the same as not signing it. A lot of us out here care about that kinda thing. I know it probably is a pain, but I also know a lot of people would really appreciate it. Keep up the good work 👍 just get rid of the stamp that ruins every book you put it in.
