MMO's Just Hit Different in 2010

- From WoW to Lotro and beyond, I've done a lot of thinking lately and MMO's just don't hit the same as they did back in the early 2010's. It may partially be my fault, but maybe there's more to it.

I think oldschool mmo's were a lot harder and grouping up with other players and socializing was absolutely required to play the game. Nowadays mmo's are more of a single player journey until the endgame raiding content.
I also had a blast playing the open beta for private lotro vanilla server called Echoes of Angmar. Grouping up and interacting with other players was absolutely required for some quests and world content.
Agreed, oldschool MMO's were definitely harder. As a time limited player I don't necessarily want to see the entire genre swing too far back -- One issue I find is when I NEED to do open world content that's hard enough to need a group, it can be very hit or miss. The feeling of not being able to progress somewhere just because the free time you happen to have doesn't line up with when you can find people is an extremely frustrating and un-fun experience.
I definitely think it has a place in the genre still and we are seeing a revival of OPTIONS for that. I recently rolled a mage on a classic WoW server, and grouped up with a random hunter to make an early quest easier since we were both on the same one, and I didn't had forgotten how fast mages went OOM back then. I had maybe 4 casts before I had to smack things with my staff, LOL. Echoes of Angmar seems interesting. One thing about the Legendary server I'm playing on I immediately noticed is that along with the changes to deeds etc still being in place, the power creep was absolutely still there. I may be mis-remembering, but I don't recall being able to just hack my way through 5 mobs at a time on the default landscape difficulty. I've been playing on +3 since I started just to make it feel a bit more interesting. Seeing Lotro in a true as-was state would be interesting. I wonder how SSG feels about the project.
@@syzxgamingx I also went back to try classic WoW and went with warlock and was positively surprised how hard even the early leveling was, grouping with other players was definitely heavily encouraged.
Lotro legendary servers still have the power creep from the years of updates. They even use the red blue yellow trait trees, which did not exist in original Shadows of Angmar, the traits and virtues system was completely different.
It was surprising that it was not possible to even kill the first signature called Frostmantle that you face in Thorin's gate without at least grouping with one other player. And even getting in combat with 2 regular mobs can easily go wrong and you find yourself at respawn point.
Thankfully emulators are completely legal in EU. And since the old Shadows of Angmar client is freely publicly available to download from the internet, I cant see SSG being able to do anything about the project, even if they do not like it.
I'll say this as someone who has never played WoW before a week ago, thank God for Classic. Retail is fine, I use the character boost to be able to raid with my friends and all that. But at the same time as I'm going through The War Within, I'm also going through WoW Classic: 20th Anniversary at the same time. For me personally, the vanilla experience so far has been FAR preferable to retail. I'm actually enjoying being forced to slow down and grind away and find myself caring about helping clear out areas around Stormwind of Kobolds and Gnolls. Again, retail is fun and all, but you're right, there's just something about that more vanilla experience that sets it apart and in my opinion, makes it better.
I agree with you! I hopped on to record some footage just for this video and found myself wanting to play a bit. While I'm curious about the new stuff, it's very satisfying going back to the old ways. I think for a new player it's especially awesome. Sometimes when I try to hop into an older MMO that's had tons of updates, I'm absolutely overwhelmed trying to figure everything out. I'm probably going to actually follow the progression on the anniversary servers this time around, like I have been with the Lotro VIP Servers.
i love classic wow and im gonna try lotro, great video bro, great storytelling
Thank you! And I hope you have a good time with Lotro!
